New personnel hired

Admissions office revamped C h a n g e s in t h e s t r u c t u r e and p e r s o n n e l of t h e o f f i c e of admiss i o n s were a n n o u n c e d F r i d a y by t h e college's e x e c u t i v e c o u n c i l . T H O M A S D. L A B A U G H was a p p o i n t e d d i r e c t o r of a d m i s s i o n s , succeding Charles Curry, who asked to be relieved of t h e post earlier this year. David Vanderwel was app o i n t e d assistant d i r e c t o r of admissions. He will c o o r d i n a t e rec r u i t i n g of y o u t h of the R e f o r m e d C h u r c h in A m e r i c a . P H I L I P T O P P E N will c o n t i n u e as assistant d i r e c t o r of a d m i s s i o n s with responsibilities for high school and j u n i o r college recruiting. T h e a p p o i n t m e n t s are part of a r e s t r u c t u r i n g of the a d m i s s i o n s o f f i c e . Recent H o p e g r a d u a t e s will be hired for one-year i n t e r n s h i p s w i t h special training p r o v i d e d by t h e d i r e c t o r s of admissions, in a d d i t i o n , stud e n t s and o t h e r v o l u n t e e r s will be given the o p p o r t u n i t y t o work

in the a d m i s s i o n s area. Full-time c o u n s e l o r s will c o m p l e t e the staff. T h e c h a n g e s c o m e at a time when a p p l i c a t i o n s f o r t h e 1 ( )7 1 -72 school year are lagging b e h i n d p r o j e c t i o n s . At o n e p o i n t this year a p p l i c a t i o n s were as far as IX per cent b e h i n d e s t i m a t e s . T h e restruct u r i n g has been t h e p r o j e c t of the executive council for several m o n t h s , with T r e a s u r e r and Business Manager C l a r e n c e H a n d l o g t e n and De Y o u n g giving il special attention. D E Y O U N G n o t e d that he has been i n t e r e s t e d for s o m e time in utilizing s t u d e n t v o l u n t e e r s and e m p l o y i n g recent H o p e g r a d u a t e s for a d m i s s i o n s w o r k . D e Y o u n g was o n the a d m i s s i o n s staff at G r a n d Valley S t a t e College and Michigan State University b e f o r e c o m i n g t o H o p e in 1 9 6 5 . H a n d l o g t e n called the admissions program " o n e of o u r most i m p o r t a n t a r e a s " and said the c h a n g e s were designed to bring 44a sense of u r g e n c y " t o the o f f i c e of a d m i s s i o n s . T H E O R G A N , B U I L T in t h e N e t h e r l a n d s by Pels and Van L e e u w e n organ b u i l d e r s of Alkm a a r , is now c o m p l e t e d and will arrive at H o p e a b o u t March 15. R e c o n s t r u c t i o n of t h e organ in t h e Chapel will take a b o u t six weeks. Plans for t h e new o r g a n began over a year a n d a half ago w h e n Roger Davis, p r o f e s s o r of organ at H o p e , drew u p t h e t o n a l specifications and p r e s e n t e d t h e m to the college a d m i n i s t r a t i o n and t o t h e d o n o r . The d o n o r had previously i n d i c a t e d a desire to d o n a t e a "really fine o r g a n " f o r Wichers A u d i t o r i u m . Davis t h e n d r e w u p a p r e s e n t a t i o n f o r him p o i n t i n g o u t t h e b e t t e r a c o u s t i c s in t h e C h a p e l gallery. "PIPE O R G A N music needs ~ large r o o m w i t h g o o d a c o u s t i c s .

This is why t h e organ s o u n d s so impressive in t h e H o p e College C h a p e l , " s t a t e d Davis. He a d d e d that t h e best place f o r organ music at the college, and even in Holland, is t h e c h a p e l . " I t would be a m i s t a k e , " Davis s t a t e d , " f o r t h e college t o put a b e a u t i f u l new organ a n y w h e r e but t h e r e . In a d d i t i o n t o the excellent acoustics, the c h a p e l is t r a d i t i o n a l l y t h e place for organ c o n c e r t s . " With t h e revival of B a r o q u e music, such as t h a t by J o h a n n Sebastian Bach, G e o r g e F r e d e r i c k Handel and A n t o n i o Vivaldi, a d e m a n d has been recognized f o r i n s t r u m e n t s w h i c h can r e c r e a t e this music. T h i s is particularly true of t h e o r g a n , stated Davis. ACCORDING TO DAVIS, b o t h he and t h e late J a m e s Tallis, f o r m e r p r o f e s s o r of organ at H o p e , had s t u d i e d in t h e N e t h e r lands where they heard and played s o m e of t h e fine and b e a u t i f u l classic organs of t h e eighteenth century. Both became aware of t h e n e e d at H o p e for a m o d e r n o r g a n . T h e m o d e r n classic (continued on page 6, column 3)

He is a 1964 g r a d u a t e of K e n y o n College and holds an M.B.A. f r o m Central Michigan University. HE WAS F O R M E R L Y an assistant c o o r d i n a t o r of s t u d e n t financial aid at CMU and has received special t r a i n i n g b e y o n d the Master's Degree in management analysis and financial aid programs. V a n d e r w e l is a 1 9 6 7 H o p e g r a d u a t e a n d will receive his B.D. degree f r o m Western T h e o l o g i c a l S e m i n a r y in J u n e . In 1 9 6 9 - 7 0 he served as an intern f r o m t h e seminary as assistant to the dean of s t u d e n t s . C u r r e n t l y he is h e a d resident in Kollen Hall.

The Board of T r u s t e e s ' qualif i c a t i o n s for p r e s i d e n t , c u r r e n t l y being used b> t h e Presidential Search C o m m i t t e e , were released at last M o n d a y ' s f a c u l t y m e e t i n g by search c o m m i t t e e m e m b e r Dr. David Marker. R E L E A S E D WITH t h e qualif i c a t i o n s was a list of the " D u t i e s ot the P r e s i d e n t " also being used by t h e search c o m m i t t e e . The first t w o q u a l i f i c a t i o n s o n t h e eight-point list state that t h e president " m u s t be a C h r i s t i a n " w h o is " p r a c t i c i n g his Christian beliefs as a m e m b e r of t h e Christian C h u r c h , " and that he "must endeavor to strengthen the c o n n e c t i o n of H o p e College with the R e f o r m e d C h u r c h in America." THE SECOND qualification f u r t h e r states t h a t the p r e s i d e n t should be " t h e key i n t e r p r e t e r of t h e College to t h e C h u r c h and of the C h u r c h t o t h e C o l l e g e . " T h i r d l y , the p r e s i d e n t " m u s t have s t r o n g a c a d e m i c c r e d e n t i a l s and possess t h e ability t o a f f o r d the College real a c a d e m i c leadership." T H E F O U R T H and f i f t h p o i n t s state that the p r e s i d e n t must be an "experienced administrator with a record of p e r f o r m a n c e , " a n d that he " m u s t have a good grasp of financial p r o b l e m s and of ways of i m p l e m e n t i n g their solutions." Point six s a y s that the president "must be a leader, an i n n o v a t o r , an idea m a n , recognizing at the s a m e time that ideas are w o r t h l e s s unless t h e m e a n s f o r i m p l e m e n t i n g t h e m is set u p . " Point seven says he " m u s t be able to s y m p a t h e t i c a l l y c o m m u n i c a t e with all c o n s t i t u e n c i e s of t h e college c o m m u n i t y . " FINALLY, THE president " m u s t be a p e r s o n of s u f f i c i e n t personal security so that he is not reliant u p o n s t e a d y a p p r o v a l and t h e varied o p i n i o n s of o t h e r s . He should be able and willing to delegate a u t h o r i t y to o t h e r s . " The d u t i e s of the president a c c o r d i n g to t h e list read by Marker are t o be t h e " C h i e f E x e c u t i v e O f f i c e r of the College,

r e s p o n s i b l e " for t h e o p e r a t i o n and d i r e c t i o n of its affairs, and to " d e t e r m i n e with the Board of T r u s t e e s the overall o b j e c t i v e s of the College and develop longrange plans regarding these objectives." T H E LIST A L S O includes as presidential duties developing " s t a n d a r d s of p e r f o r m a n c e for all activities of the College," and d e v e l o p i n g a n d d i r e c t i n g "a supp o r t i n g o r g a n i z a t i o n " and seeing " t h a t t h e p r o p e r lines of a u t h o r i t y and responsibility are d e l e g a t e d . " Prior t o reading the t w o lists Marker a n n o u n c e d that the PSC is n o w c o n s i d e r i n g a list of 14 names. He said that the c o m m i t tee is still seeking m o r e n a m e s and asked t h e f a c u l t y to s u b m i t any n a m e s t h e y t h o u g h t might deserve serious c o n s i d e r a t i o n . DR. D. I V A N D y k s t r a , chairman of the p h i l o s o p h y d e p a r t m e n t , asked if t h e PSC is l o o k i n g for o n e man for president or r a t h e r was c o n s i d e r i n g a n o t h e r f o r m of o r g a n i z a t i o n . Marker r e s p o n d e d that the PSC had been c o m m i s s i o n e d t o find only o n e man. Dr. J o h n Hollenbach, c h a i r m a n of the English d e p a r t m e n t , c o n f i r m e d that the Board of T r u s t e e s is intent on o n e man. " T h e Board of T r u s t e e s discussed for a long t i m e w h e t h e r to have o n e man or joint leadership. In the e n d , the Board felt that o n e man should be u l t i m a t e l y r e s p o n s i b l e , " H o l l e n b a c h said. AT T H E E N D of the m e e t i n g Marker a n n o u n c e d t h a t he and Dr. Paul Fried t h e o t h e r faculty m e m b e r s o n t h e PSC, b o t h felt that t h e search for the president was p r o c e e d i n g slowly. "We have tried to exercise p a t i e n c e , " he said. " O t h e r s n o w feel that there has been t o o m u c h i n e r t i a , " he a d d e d . Marker t h e n said that Hugh DePree, c h a i r m a n of the Board of T r u s t e e s , also felt that the search was p r o c e e d i n g slowly, and that DePree was trying " t o push the whole t hi ng t o get it moving." Marker read the t w o docum e n t s t o the f a c u l t y as an a n n o u n c e m e n t near t h e end of the meeting.

National Players to perform T h e N a t i o n a l Players, a f e a t u r e of t h e H o p e College Great Performance Series, will present S h a k e s p e a r e ' s Twelfth Night Satu r d a y at 8 : 1 5 p . m . in t h e Holland Civic C e n t e r . T H E N A T I O N A L Players are f r o m the C a t h o l i c University of America in W a s h i n g t o n , D. C. A t o u r i n g t r o u p e , t h e c o m p a n y has gone on t h e r o a d every y e a r since 1949, f r o m O c t o b e r u n t i l May. T h e i r 21 years of c o n t i n u o u s operation make the National Players t h e l o n g e s t - r u n n i n g national classical r e p e r t o r y c o m p a n y in A m e r i c a . The Players have given over 3 , 0 0 0 p e r f o r m a n c e s of classical and m o d e r n m a s t e r w o r k s of t h e stage.
