" His m u s i c b e c a m e a blend of the best e l e m e n t s of he C l a s s i c a n d H o m a t i c e r a s , a c c o r d i n g to c r i t i c s .

HOPE COLLEGE HAS H A D a fine reputation for c x c e l l c n c c in the y e a r s p a s t . It h a s produced men a n d w o m e n of high caliber who h a v e , in t u r n , c o n t r i b u t e d to the s c h o o l ' s reputation a n d d e v e l o p m e n t . How m a n y colleges of H o p e ' s size can boast of h a v i n g had seven Woodrow Wilson g r a n t s given to its s t u d e n t s in one y e a r ? And this has been a tradition at Hope.

T h r o u g h the d e d i c a t e d effort of m a n y of t h e s e f o r m e r s t u d e n t s a n d o t h e r s , t h e college has been able to exist and p r o g r e s s s t e a d i l y to its p r e s e n t height. Such other c o n s i d e r a t i o n s as t i m e and facilities for r e s e a r c h , s a b b a t ical l e a v e p r o g r a m s , a d e q u a t e libraries and d e p a r t m e n t s in e a c h field of such a size as to allow a d e q u a t e faculty s t i m u l a t i o n and challenging communication.

It is obvious t h a t this i n c r e a s e in s a l a r i e s will entail an e x t r e m e i n c r e a s e in a n n u a l operating expenditure.

F u r t h e r m o r e , an e n l a r g e m e n t of t h e student body to a possible high of 2800 s t u d e n t s is being c o n t e m p l a t e d .

While this would be o v e r a period of y e a r s , a i m e d at m e e t i n g the rising d e m a n d for h i g h e r e d u c a t i o n , it would m e a n t h a t the f a c u l t y would have to be e n l a r g e d by the addition of m o r e t h a n 75 full t i m e p r o f e s s o r s alone a s well a s sup-

IT W I L L ALSO BECOME NECESSARY to i n c r e a s e s t u d e n t r e c r u i t m e n t p r o g r a m s to initiate any i n c r e a s e in the size of the student body and to a t t r a c t the c a l i b r e of student n e c e s s a r y to i n s u r e Hope's f u t u r e reputation. T h e p r e s e n c e of s u p e r i o r s t u d e n t s on the c a m p u s has also b e c o m e one of the most e f f e c t i v e m a g n e t s in a t t r a c t i n g t e a c h e r s , despite low p a y .

G r e a t t e a c h e r s in t u r n , a t t r a c t good s t u d e n t s so this has bec o m e a c o m p l e t e c y c l e . This h a s been o n e of H o p e ' s biggest a s s e t s in the p a s t ; excellent i n s t r u c t o r s and excellent s t u d e n t s .

All in all. Hope would like to invest m o r e t h a n $6 million in plant facilities over a r e a sonable p e r i o d , but a s rapidly a s possible, and would t h e r e b y , a n d through other expansion and d e v e l o p m e n t , incur a d d e d y e a r l y o p e r a t i n g e x p e n s e s of $2-$3 million p l u s .

This would c r e a t e a need for $5-$6 million annually to simply o p e r a t e t h e e n l a r g e d college.

W h a t is being done and c a n be done y e t to r a i s e t h e s e capital a n d o p e r a t i n g f u n d s ?

T h e first source t h a t c o m e s to mind is, of course, s t u d e n t tuition a n d f e e s . S i n c e these a l r e a d y p r o v i d e the m a j o r source of o p e r a t i n g r e v e n u e , s o m e people contend t h a t they should be r a i s e d to m e e t rising costs.

T h e a d m i n i s t r a t i o n a n d the B o a r d do not want to do t h i s for s e v e r a l r e a s o n s .

IF T U I T I O N FEES a r e i n c r e a s e d , m a n y good s t u d e n t s will be f i n a n c i a l l y unable to attend Hope.

This will destroy the d i v e r s e C h a r a c t e r of t h e institution a s well a s its quality.

It is also felt that such an i n c r e a s e will put too much of the burden of e d u c a t i o n a l cost on s t u d e n t s and their p a r e n t s . O t h e r s will benefit trom t h e be e r v d i ' c a t o n of these s t u d e n t s and t h e s e people should cont r i b u t e their s h a r e of the c o s t s . This includes the industry which n e e d s e d u c a t e d people to o p e r a t e it a n d t h e m e m b e r s of society wiiich benefit f r o m the professional people who s e r v e t h e m .

Yet Hope College s t u d e n t s do pay l e s s totally for their e d u c a t i o n t h a n s t u d e n t s at o t h e r (ILCA colleges and t h i s might be a disparity indicating the s t u d e n t s a r c not paying enough.

What then a r e the a l t e r n a t i v e s o u r c e s ?

First, the college looks to the R e f o r m e d C h u r c h which presently supplies six p e r c e n t of the o p e r a t i n g costs. T h e c h u r c h h a s a l a r g e part in the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n of the school through the B o a r d of T r u s t e e s a n d r e c e i v e s m a n y b e n e f i t s from the college, l! is natural that the school should look to the c h u r c h for support, but it should not expect a g r e a t deal.

While the R e f o r m e d Church has an i m p o r tant voice in the school's a f f a i r s , it has m a n y responsibilities. Its monies a r e widely dis. tributed a n d not at all i n e x h a u s t i b l e . Certainly il r e c e i v e s m a n y leading lay people as well a s c l e r g y through t h e college, yet il does not d e p e n d on t h e school for t h e s e m e m b e r s . None the less, the c h u r c h a p p a r ently neglects Hope College to a d e g r e e .

AT PRESENT, a s detailed in part I, the c h u r c h follows a policy of distributing the allotted money to its three colleges on a basis of a b s o l u t e e q u a l i t y . This m e a n s t h a t Hope r e c e i v e s much less to spend on e a c h student than do the o t h e r two schools. T h i s certainly does not a p p e a r to be the most enlightened method of d i s t r i b u t i n g t h e s e funds.

T h e c h u r c h also s e e m s to be paying v e r y little for the right to a lot of a u t h o r i t y , d i r e c t and i n d i r e c t .

And t h e present d o m i n a t i o n of the Board by R e f o r m e d C h u r c h m e m b e r s does c r e a t e s o m e difficult p r o b l e m s , no m a t t e r what the a d v a n t a g e s .

T h i s r e s t r i c t i o n m a k e s it m o r e difficult to elect m e m b e r s to t h e Boarcj^ who h a v e a d e q u a t e knowledge in school a d m i n i s t r a t i o n and other essential skills. It also m a k e s it m o r e difficult to p l a c e m e m b e r s on t h e Board who would be in a position to r a i s e f u n d s for the college. Many college b o a r d s

of d i r e c t o r s a r e p r i m a r i l y o r g a n i z e d a n d populated with a f u n d - r a i s . n g m o i . v e . Not H o p e College's.

Yet any c h a n g e s in this a r e a should entail only an o r g a n i z a t i o n a l rethinking a n d not dissolution of the p r e s e n t c h u r c h college b o n d s . As shown in p a r t I, Hope College n e e d s the c h u r c h .

Alumni support should be a n o t h e r m a j o r s o u r c e of funds. In t h e f u t u r e it should a n d m u s t play a much e x p a n d e d role. " N o one should know b e t t e r t h a n our a l u m n i the i m p o r t a n c e of having society invest its money and faith in the e d u c a t i o n of its young p e o p l e , " Allan W. O s t a r , director of the Office of Institutional R e s e a r c h said r e c e n t l y , " Y e t all too often w e find a l u m n i who a r e not willing to orovide t h e s a m e opportunity to f u t u r e g e n e r a t i o n s t h a t t h e y e n j o y e d . If they d o n ' t , w h o w i l l ? " T h e college must work to gain the financial support of its a l u m n i . T h e a l u m n i in t u r n must realize their unfilled obligation to the school and w o r k to fulfill it.

H O P E MUST ALSO WORK to get inc r e a s e d financial s u p p o r t of b u s i n e s s a n d i n d u s t r y . This is especially t r u e in t h e local a r e a w h e r e the m o n e y spent by t h e college, its personnel, and its siudents—a total of o v e r $325 million a n n u a l l y — h e l p s g r e a t l y to stimulate the economy.

Hope also m a k e s Holland a culturally d e s i r a b l e p l a c e to live w h i c h aids local growth and d e v e l o p m e n t .

T h e college p r o v i d e s m a n y cultural and recr e a t i o n a l o p p o r t u n i t i e s for the a r e a t h r o u g h c o n c e r t s and athletic e v e n t s .

T h i s m e a n s that local support m u s t a n d should i n c r e a s e .

F e d e r a l g o v e r n m e n t s u p p o r t should also be solicited. T h e national g o v e r n m e n t m a k e s a v a i l a b l e l a r g e a m o u n t s of money for educ a t i o n . D o r m i t o r y loans and r e s e a r c h g r a n t s a r e p r e s e n t l y being utilized by t h e college.

If it is to move f o r w a r d on its a m b i t i o u s p r o g r a m s , it must also look to the governm e n t for t h e money to build new c l a s s r o o m s and l a b o r a t o r i e s and to a d d to p r e s e n t lib r a r y facilities.

The federal government c a n be a very i m p o r t a n t s o u r c e of both capital and o p e r a t i n g f u n d s in the f u t u r e .

F o u n d a t i o n s , such a s the F o r d Foundation, a r e a n o t h e r i m p o r t a n t source of f u n d s f o r all p u r p o s e s . T h e college m u s t m a k e u s e of x these in t h e f u t u r e . H o w e v e r , the school is not p r e s e n t l y being considered by t h e F o r d F o u n d a t i o n , o n e of the largest p h i l a n t h r o p i c o r g a n i z a t i o n s . T h e m a i n question raised by the F o r d F o u n d a t i o n staff in connection with heir rejection of Hope's vecent application w e r e these: a ) Feeling it may be a s e c t a r i a n institution. b) F a c u l t y i n b r e e d i n g (too m a n y faculty m e m b e r s being Hope College graduates ) c ) A c a d e m i c , f i n a n c i a l , or legal knowhow of t h e m e m b e r s of the B o a r d of Trustees d ) Financial c a p a b i l i t y of "the college to continue on its own r e s o u r c e s to c a r r y out its p r o g n - m at the level to which a F F g r a n t would r a i s e it. ( I n other words, t h e ability to obtain sufficient operating funds) v) F a i l u r e thus f a r to m a i n t a i n t h e schedule p r o j e c t e d in our profile a few y e a r s ago. Director Gaveldon's treatment o f the f i l m ' s m a t e r i a l w a s app r o p r i a t e l y u n e m b r o i d e r e d and fort u n a t e l y lacked an e x c e s s i v e pictoral e m p h a s i s of the b a s i c t e n e t s of the movie.

Although " M a c a r i o " m a y lack p r o f u n d i t y of a film such a s "Wild S r a w b e r r i e s " or the s a u c y j a u n t of " L a Dolce V i t a . " il is n e i t h e r l a c k i n g in its own restrained h u m o r nor does it deny one a significant a m o u n t of intellectual s t i m u l a t i o n . Its q u i e ' s t r e n g t h and ingenuous form make il a thoroughly w o r t h w h i l e and e n j o y able e v e n i n g ' s e n t e r t a i n m e n t .

by Dr. Robert Cavanaugh G a b r i e l F a u r e ' s composition of his " R e q u e m " w a s the turning paint in his c a r e e r as a c o m p o s e r .

T h e t r a g i c death of his f a t h e r in 18811 induced h m to c o m p o s e he " R e q u i e m , " which w a s c o m p l e t e d in 1887. a n d led t o w a r d a m o r e m a t u r e , cohesive style. T h e rapid s c a l e s and bubbl.ng a r p e g g i o s ot his e a r l i e r piano m u s i c , f o r e x a m ple. now g ve way to an almost classic purity.

Eminently qualified to write w o r k s of a rel'gious n a t u r e t h r o u g h his b a c k u r o u n d and posi ion as organist in the leading c h u r c h e s in P a n s . F a u r e developed a style that could be described a s a mixt u r e of the Classic and R o m a n t i c periods in music, e m p l o y i n g the best f e a t u r e s of e a c h and yet pres a g i n g the o n c o m i n g i m m p r e s s onism of Debussy wi h u n u s u a l harmonic progressions insinuating t h e m s e l v e s b e n e a t h vocal melodic lines of s i m p l e purity.

Various forceful steps h a v e a l r e a d y been t a k e n to i n i t i a t e this new p r o g r a m a n d give voice to the c h n a m i c f e e l i n g s of the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n and t h e college as a whole.

One of t h e s e s t e p s is the r e c e n t i n c r e a s e in t h e A d m i s s i o n s Office staff w h i c h now e m p l o v s lour p e o p l e full time 4 a n d t h r e e p a r t t i m e w o r k e r s . An e n l a r g e d b u d g e t h a s also been m a d e a v a i l a b l e to t h e m .

Most i m p o r t a n t l y , t h e position of a Director of D e v e l o p m e n t h a s b e e n c r e a t e d to c o - o r d i n a t e t h e college's d r i v e for i n c r e a s e d s o u r c e s and a m o u n t s of f u n d s . .

FOR THE FIRST T I M E t h e college will be c o m p e t i n g for the m o n e y it h a s previously w a t c h e d go to m o r e a g g r e s s i v e schools.

The Flying Dutch opened the season at h o m e against V a l p o r a i s o and w e r e solidly t r o u n c e d , although it a p p e a r e d t h a i it w a s a well-oiled Valpo m a c h i n e and not Hope i n a d e q u a c i e s that brought about the victory.

Against E l m h u r s t . in Illinois, the Du ch were rendered ineffective by a zone press and consequently d r o p p e d their second s t r a i g h t contest of the s e a s o n .

League play opened against Adrian at Adrian and the g a m e could be called the turning point.

Rallying f r o m a seven-point deficit Hope t u r n e d in the first of its season-long, second half o u t b u r s t s to d e f e a t the Bulldogs by 10 p o m s.

A w a k e n e d by t h e i r new p o w e r , the Dutch rattled off t h r e e consecutive home court victories. . which w e r e l a t e r lo r e a c h 11 s t r a i g h t , trouncing Olivet, A l m a and a strong Aquinas team.

A f t e r losing their worst g a m e of the season to a precision Wheaton t e a m at Wheaton. the D u t c h m e n took on Albion in their first " b i g " g a m e of the c a m p a i g n . U n a b l e to rebound f r o m s o m e e a r l y g a m e sloppiness the Dutch w e r e n e v e r able to c a t c h the hot-shooting Britons and Hope d r o p p e d i.s f o u r t h g a m e of the s e a s o n . It w a s t h e last t i m e that Hope would lose two g a m e s in a row.

A Tribute To Greatness Back in November when 13 young b a s k e t b a l l p l a y e r s b e g a n p r a c t i c i n g for their 1984-65 s e .son u n d e r coach Russ DeVe te. the upcoming season looked a n y t h i n g but rosy. Hope had lost its two top s c o r e r s f r o m the previous s e a s o n , and while e r r a t i c shooting had been a problem last y e a r , it s e e m e d to be an almost insurm o u n able obstacle before this

Not quite recovered f r o m the Albion loss. Hope nearly d r o p p e d below the .300 m a r k a g J n s . a visiting Lake Forest s q u a d , but the Dutch had enough to hold out a n d r e c o r d e d a one-point win.

Back on the winning t r a c k once a g a i n . Hope m a d e its a n n u a l pilg r i m a g e to the Grand R a p i d s Civic Audi o r i u m and was m a n h a n d l e d by the Calvin Kn ghts.
