Blacks ask judicial change by Garrett DeGraff anchor Assistant Editor A t t e m p t s by the College Judicial Board t o try t w o black stud e n t s have resulted in a p r e c e d e n t m a k i n g decision by the Board and d e m a n d s by black s t u d e n t s for r e p r e s e n t a t i o n in the College j u d i ciary. T H E DECISION BY t h e Board to s u s p e n d one of t h e t w o stud e n t s for failing to a p p e a r b e f o r e t h e c o u r t a f t e r being n o t i f i e d t o a p p e a r sets a p r e c e d e n t for cases of this n a t u r e . T h e first step t o w a r d m a k i n g the n e w p r e c e d e n t c a m e F e b . 19 when o n e of the t w o s t u d e n t s charged u n d e r S e c t i o n IV paragraph 2 with " b e h a v i o r w h i c h unnecessarily d i s t u r b s t h e a c a d e m ic p u r s u i t s , or infringes u p o n the privacy, rights, or privileges of o t h e r p e r s o n s , " and r e q u e s t e d t o a p p e a r at the m e e t i n g failed t o d o so. T h e o t h e r s t u d e n t c h a r g e d had been e x c u s e d f r o m a p p e a r i n g at this m e e t i n g t o avoid t h e possibility of i n c r i m i n a t i n g himself in civil c o u r t on the same i n c i d e n t . T H A T I N C I D E N T allegedly occured F e b . 11 w h e n f o u r s t u d e n t s were r e p o r t e d t o have w a l k e d i n t o J o h n D y k s t r a ' s r o o m in C o s m o p o l i t a n Hall, and one of the stud e n t s allegedly hit D y k s t r a . On F e b . 19 the Judicial Board d e c i d e d t h a t " f a i l u r e t o a p p e a r at an a p p o i n t e d session of the Judicial B o a r d f o r which s u f f i c i e n t n o t i c e has b e e n given is considered in violation of judicial policy. A s e c o n d n o t i c e will be given for w h i c h a t t e n d a n c e is c o m p u l s o r y . Failure t o a p p e a r a s e c o n d time will result in a reprim a n d as d e f i n e d by t h e S t u d e n t Handbook."

O N E WEEK L A T E R the College Judicial Board m e t again. Both s t u d e n t s charged were asked to a p p e a r at this meeting. Neither was t h e r e , o n e failing t o a p p e a r for the second t i m e . C o n c e r n i n g this s t u d e n t t h e Board d e c i d e d that " f a i l u r e t o a p p e a r b e f o r e t h e Board a t t a c k s the f o u n d a t i o n s of t h e governmental s y s t e m of the College; t h e r e f o r e , we d e f i n e t h e reprim a n d as suspension for the rem a i n d e r of t h e semester, p e n d i n g an a p p e a r a n c e by the s t u d e n t at a special m e e t i n g of t h e Judicial Board." T h e Board m e t in special session M o n d a y and the s t u d e n t did not a p p e a r . He was t h u s s u s p e n d ed p e n d i n g a c t i o n by t h e S t u d e n t S t a n d i n g and A p p e a l s C o m m i t t e e . T H E J U D I C I A L B O A R D also r e c o m m e n d e d t o the President t h e i m m e d i a t e f o r m a t i o n " o f a Human R e l a t i o n s Council t o deal with all a s p e c t s of the involvement of black s t u d e n t s in t h e Ho p e College c o m m u n i t y . " T h e rationale s t a t e d f o r the c o u n c i l "is the real need for b e t t e r u n d e r s t a n d i n g a m o n g all s e g m e n t s of the H o p e College c o m m u n i t y . " A C C O R D I N G TO m e m b e r s of the Judicial Board on W e d n e s d a y , if t h e o t h e r s t u d e n t c h a r g e d did not a p p e a r y e s t e r d a y he w o u l d also be suspended pending a n o t h e r special session of t h e Board. This a c t i o n by the Board has occurred simultaneously with d e m a n d s f r o m t h e Black C o a l i t i o n and o t h e r black s t u d e n t s on campus t h a t the judicial s y s t e m at H o p e be r e v a m p e d t o i n c l u d e m e a n s w h e r e b y cases against black s t u d e n t s c o u l d be heard by judicial b o d i e s c o m p o s e d at least partially of Black s t u d e n t s .

Tavern a second home for many Hope students by Dave T h o m a s anchor Reporter S o m e s t u d e n t s have c o m e t o feel t h a t Skiles Tavern is an imp o r t a n t part of a H o p e College education. THIS IS A SMALL m i n o r i t y , of c o u r s e , but it is q u i e t l y growing. Dave Skiles, o w n e r and bart e n d e r of the e s t a b l i s h m e n t , recognizes this and plans t o d o u b l e the size of the tavern by the time school o p e n s next fall. T h e r e is s o m e t h i n g slightly unusual in this. Many s t u d e n t s are a t t r a c t e d t o Skiles by f o r c e s t h a t they d o not fully u n d e r s t a n d . T h e y go t o Skiles t o e x p e r i e n c e the p e o p l e and the beer and t h e color TV a n d . . . s o m e t h i n g else, b e y o n d the o r d i n a r y realm of A m e r i c a n tavern life. H Y N A , SKJLE'S e x p e r i e n c e d b a r m a i d , veteran of 17 y e a r s at the t a v e r n , t a l k e d a b o u t the stud e n t s t h a t she has m e t over t h e years. "I d o n ' t get t o k n o w as m a n y s t u d e n t s as 1 used to. T h e r e have been so m a n y of t h e m lately." S i p p i n g a c u p of c o f f e e bet w e e n c u s t o m e r s , the gray-haired, m a t r o n l y barmaid recalled old student acquaintances. "I STILL REMEMBER the stud e n t s t h a t used t o c o m e in here several years a g o . " Her eyes b r i g h t e n e d as she recalled s o m e of their n a m e s . " A n y o n e f r o m H o p e

THE FIRST MANIFEST d e m o n s t r a t i o n of the a n t i p a t h y felt by many black s t u d e n t s toward t h e judicial system c a m e the m o r n i n g of F e b . 20, the day f o l l o w i n g the first m e e t i n g of the College Judicial Board c o n c e r n i n g the t w o black s t u d e n t s . At that time a p p r o x i m a t e l y 40 s t u d e n t s o c c u p i e d b o t h t h e inner and o u t e r o f f i c e of the O f f i c e of the Dean of Students Robert DeVoung. According to DeVoung, when he arrived at Van Raalte at a b o u t 8 : 3 0 he was asked to s t e p into the l o b b y . At t h a t time t h e black s t u d e n t s read t o him a list of d e m a n d s regarding the judicial system of Hope College. DURING THE NEXT two weeks Dean D e Y o u n g ' s o f f i c e received a letter f r o m a g r o u p of black s t u d e n t s at Albion College, and a telegraph f r o m black students at the Afro-American S t u d i e s I n s t i t u t e b o t h stating their s u p p o r t for t h e e f f o r t s of t h e black s t u d e n t s at Hope t o change the judicial s y s t e m . M O N D A Y ' S M E E T I N G of the Judicial Board was i n t e r r u p t e d by Reginald C o h e n , Bob B l a n t o n and Ron J o n a k i n , w h o m ade a statement t o the B o a r d c o n c e r n i n g t h e c o u r t ' s a c t i o n o n the t w o black s t u d e n t s and t h e judicial s e t u p . That evening Dr. David Myers, a m e m b e r of t h e c o u r t , a t t e n d e d a m e e t i n g of the Black C o a l i t i o n . At the m e e t i n g , a c c o r d i n g t o Myers, he e x p l a i n e d t h e a c t i o n s of t h e Judicial Board regarding t h e black s t u d e n t s and t h e role of t h e Board m the Campus government. The C o a l i t i o n at this t i m e e x p l a i n e d t o Myers their d e m a n d s f o r black r e p r e s e n t a t i o n in the j u d i c i a r y system. T h o u g h the C o a l i t i o n s p o k e t o Myers and t o o t h e r s , no clear-cut s t a t e m e n t of t h e i r specific dem a n d s is available; those t o w h o m the C o a l i t i o n addressed their dem a n d s r e f u s e t o give a r e p o r t o n what they h e a r d fearing inacc u r a c y , and t h e Coalition w o u l d not release a s t a t e m e n t to t h e anchor. T H E A P P A R E N T r a t i o n a l e for the d e m a n d s of t h e C o a l i t i o n is that m o s t m e m b e r s of t h e College Judicial Board are rascists a n d thus n o t q u a l i f i e d to hear a case against a black s t u d e n t .

" T h e p l a y , a u t h o r F r a n k W e d e k i n d ' s e x p l o r a t i o n of t h e age-old g e n e r a t i o n gap and his revelation of the pains of a d o l e s c e n c e , will o p e n March 12 at 8 p.m. in the Little T h e a t r e .

T h e a t r e will present 'Spring's A w a k e n i n g ' That a " g e n e r a t i o n g a p " is not the peculiar p r o p e r t y of t h e 1960's will be illustrated in t h e theatre department production of F r a n k W e d e k i n d ' s Spring's Awakening March 12, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21 in the Little Theatre. W R I T T E N IN 1891 and first p e r f o r m e d in G e r m a n y in 1 9 0 6 , the play d e p i c t s b o t h t h e natural j o y s of y o u t h and t h e torm e n t s of t h e teen-ager t r y i n g t o preserve a vision of t r u t h and b e a u t y in a basically hostile and unfeeling society. W e d e k i n d m a k e s no p r e t e n s e of " o b j e c t i v i t y " in his s t u d y of a d o l e s c e n c e , but r a t h e r t a k e s t h e side of t h e y o u n g s t e r s , w h o m he p o r t r a y s as sensitive and h o n e s t , as o p p o s e d to t h e a d u l t s , viewed as moralistic and repressive. Spring's Awakening tends to d e f y classification as a d r a m a , moving f r o m realism t o f a n t a s y and i n c l u d i n g e l e m e n t s of such theatrical styles as impressionism, expressionism, symbolism a n d n a t u r a l i s m . C H A R A C T E R I Z E D BY o n e critic as t h e " f i r s t volley of t h e theatre's revolt which today s h o w s little sign of a b a t i n g , " it was o n e of t h e earliest plays of the m o v e m e n t w h i c h was t o bec o m e k n o w n as e x p r e s s i o n i s m , as well as p r e f i g u r i n g such m o d ern m o v e m e n t s as t h e t h e a t e r of the a b s u r d and t h e t h e a t e r of protest. The p l a y ' s f r e q u e n t s h i f t in style reflects Wedekind's rejection of the realistic and naturalistic d r a m a t i c style w h i c h were c u r r e n t l y in vogue. DESIGNER RICHARD A n g s t a d t ' s stylized set is ini n t e n d e d t o e n h a n c e the s t a r k n e s s of the play's t h e m e and t o facilitiate the rapid m o v e m e n t s of the s e q u e n c e of scenes. His lighting design will employ c o l o r and special e f f e c t s in keeping with the surrealistic m o o d of t h e p l a y , while its realistic a s p e c t s will be e m p h a s i z e d

visually in Mary S c h a k e l ' s costumes. W E D E K I N D ' S insistence t h a t the stage s h o u l d serve t h e personal vision of t h e p l a y w r i g h t rather t h a n s i m p l y r e f l e c t life as it is lived f r o m day t o day make h i m , in t h e w o r d s of Carl Mueller, " o n e of t h e m a j o r forces in m o d e r n d r a m a f o r t h e i n f l u e n c e he e x e r t e d in b r e a k i n g up the bathos of neor o m a n t i c i s m as well as t h e stolidity of n a t u r a l i s m . " A c c o r d i n g to d i r e c t o r J o h n T a m m i , the p r o d u c t i o n will seek t o e m p h a s i z e t h e p o e t i c a l , lyrical t r u t h of t h e y o u t h w h i c h Wedekind contrasts with the shallowness of their elders. " T h e play," Tammi states, "is a r e m i n d e r that c h i l d h o o d is not all f u n and g a m e s , and t h a t parents o f t e n m a k e it less enj o y a b l e t h a n it m i g h t b e . " SINCE IT'S premier perf o r m a n c e , Spring's Awakening has b e e n t h e s u b j e c t of h e a t e d c o n t r o v e r s y , and its original prod u c t i o n in t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s resulted in a r i o t . Critics n e v e r t h e l e s s t e n d t o regard t h e play as W e d e k i n d ' s " m o s t p o e t i c a n d m o s t artistically satisfying w o r k , " and which, 'according to Carl Mueller, speaks " l o u d l y and y e t with t e n d e r love and c o m p a s s i o n regarding t h e trials and t o r m e n t s a c c o m p a n y i n g t h e sexual a w a k e n i n g of p u b e r t y . " "Even though removed in t i m e f r o m us b y 80 y e a r s , " says T a m m i , " t h e play is still valid for a m o d e r n a u d i e n c e . Even its f o r m r e m a i n s i n t e r e s t i n g , having m o r e weight and q u a l i t y t h a n m u c h e x p e r i m e n t a t i o n in t o d a y ' s theater." T h e A c a d e m i c A f f a i r s Board a p p r o v e d a p r o p o s a l to c h a n g e the six s e m e s t e r h o u r r e q u i r e d seq u e n c e of Old and New Testament t o an elective p r o g r a m at its meeting Wednesday. T H E E L E C T I V E p r o g r a m allows a s t u d e n t t o c h o o s e his first three h o u r s of required religion courses from f o u r courses under the h e a d i n g of Basic S t u d i e s in Religion and his next t h r e e h o u r s of r e q u i r e d c o u r s e s f r o m either the Basic S t u d i e s in Religion section or any c o u r s e o f f e r e d by the religion d e p a r t m e n t . The four new courses offered by t h e religion d e p a r t m e n t u n d e r the h e a d i n g of the Basic S t u d i e s in Religion are t h e L i t e r a t u r e of J u d a i s m and C h r i s t i a n i t y , Basic Christian Thought, Phenom e n o l o g y of Religion, and Religion in S o c i e t y .

DR. H E N R Y V O O G D , chairman of t h e religion d e p a r t m e n t , stated t h a t the new p r o g r a m " p r o vices w i d e r elective possibilities and p r e s e n t s t h e s t u d e n t with a great v a r i e t y of c o u r s e s w h i c h he can c h o o s e to fit his o w n personality." AAB chairman Dr. A r t h u r J e n t z s t a t e d t h a t t h e revised religion c u r r i c u l u m p r e s e n t e d an " e x c e l l e n t p r o g r a m for t h e s t u d y of r e l i g i o n . " IN FURTHER action the Board d e c i d e d t h a t a p r o p o s a l by Dr. J a m e s van P u t t e n , associate p r o f e s s o r of physics, to revise the s e m e s t e r - h o u r s y s t e m be a c c e p t e d as i n f o r m a t i o n and i n c l u d e d with t h e r e p o r t s of t h e C a l e n d a r C o m mittee and Curriculum Comm i t t e e , t w o ad h o c c o m m i t t e e s of the AAB. Van P u t t e n originially presented t h e p r o p o s a l and its rationale at a m e e t i n g of t h e A A B o n Feb. 25. Van P u t t e n suggested

that the average s e m e s t e r load be 48 h o u r s per week and t h a t each c o u r s e be given t h r e e n u m b e r s instead of o n e . EACH C O U R S E would be d e t e r m i n e d by t h e sum of t h e t o t a l h o u r s spent in the classroom per w e e k , the t o t a l h o u r s spent in o t h e r f a c u l t y supervised activities such as l a b o r a t o r y , s t u d i o , and rehearsal, and t h e t o t a l h o u r s of i n d e p e n d e n t s t u d y per week. V a n P u t t e n s t a t e d t h a t the sum of t h e t h r e e n u m b e r s w o u l d tell the s t u d e n t t h e average n u m b e r of h o u r s a n t i c i p a t e d for this class. F o r e x a m p l e , u n d e r the p r e s e n t m e t h o d World L i t e r a t u r e is assigned three s e m e s t e r h o u r s . In t h e p r o p o s e d s y s t e m World L i t e r a t u r e w o u l d be assigned nine s e m e s t e r h o u r s , t h r e e f o r classroom s t u d y and six for i n d e p e n d e n t s t u d y .
