News Candlelight vigil calls for racial harmony

by Carol Ormsby feature editor A p p r o x i m a t e l y 70 s t u d e n t s answered "The Call" and turned out for the Candlelight Vigil in the Pine Grove sponsored by WTHS, Multicultural Life and the Black Coalition "The Call," a speech provided by a group called The Call for Racial Harmony and Justice, was read by Samatha Gano, president of tiie Black Coalition, as a summons to the vigil Tuesday evening, Feb. 27 Gano also t a l k e d of h e r p e r s o n a l experiences regarding prejudice a g a i n s t herself and fellow minority students on a mainlywhite campus. Gano pointed out that prejudice isn't always blatant, but may be expressed through more subtle comments.

speech, Jacob stressed the point that prejudice "is so incredibly stupid " " A f t e r c o m p l e t i n g the speech," Jacob said in a later interview, " t h e realization (of the situation) hit me hard. I walked away with the candle and felt myself really talking to God "

Jacob was delighted with the turnout, and commented that he was thrilled to see Hope President John Jacobson there.

"I thought it was very nice on his part He was willing to take a stand and get involved with what the students a r e doing on campus " Jacob said. Continuing he said that although students a r e often viewed as being apathetic, a lot of the time faculty and staff a r e the s a m e way. Apathy comes not just f r o m the d o r m s but also from the classrooms and offices as well, according to Jacob.

Jacob was pleased with how smoothly the actual ceremony ran. Participants were "in tune with how i m p o r t a n t the ceremony actually w a s , " he said.

Standing together in the group was "a powerful jolt as far as im pact was concerned." added J a c o b "It definitely raised people's awareness " J a c o b com mented that there were people at the vigil who went with prejudice and left, hopefully, rethinking their position.

Jacob hopes the vigil will become an annual event. " E v e n if it does become annual, it won't stop p r e j u d i c e , " said Jacob. But he hopes that if the event is once a year, it will function as a r e m i n d e r , like any other ceremony " H u m a n s tend to forget what we've learned." said Jacob.

Tuition increases again for 90-91 school year

by Tim Grotenhuis staff writer Hope College's annual tuition has been increased 9.2 percent from 198^-90 figures.

Vice-president of Finance Bill Anderson said, " w e needed about 8.9 percent in tuition to maintain our r e g u l a r program and an additional one percent to do some special things we need to do over a period of y e a r s . " Accounting for the one percent increase, the special things that he mentioned include increased computer access throughout campus with terminal centers added to Dykstra and Phelps, a $500,000 c a m p u s wide security system, and a $100,000 renovation of the Kletz.

The other 8.9 percent falls into two categories. The first is the

projected leveling off of admissions at Hope and the second is the projected decrease in the supply of professors nationwide In previous years the college has been largely f i n a n c e d through the tuition dollars of increasing numbers of students attending Hope That is, allowing for increases in salaries and such based on the amount of new available income With a zero projected growth r a t e for the college in the next year, the college will not be able to count on that extra capitol from new students.

The Board of Trustees will, instead, raise tuition. Mr. Anderson said the alternative is larger classes.

As of now, Hope College faculty a r e payed the lowest salaries on the a v e r a g e in the Great Lakes College Association.

"Nobody ever likes (tuition inc r e a s e s ) " sophomore Jennifer Fettig said. " I don't like it because it is hard enough to make the payments already let alone adding m o r e to it."

Those already on financial aid will not have to worry very much about the increase because financial aid has also increased 20 percent. The effects, however, may be felt by those who do not receive any financial aid.

Junior Kob Starr said, "As of next year, I'm going to have to have a job if I don't get some financial aid. I don't have it now."

Regardless of whether or not one is on financial aid, the tuition has increased and sophomore Erick Wampler commented, "If its justifiable, well then I guess it's got to h a p p e n . "

Critical Issues Boesak addresses capacity crowd in chapel

Dickie said the degree was in honor of Boesak's "achievements a s a theologian and g i f t e d p r e a c h e r in the Reformed tradition" and for his "leadership in the quest for j u s t i c in South A f r i c a and throughout the world."

ference arranged by Public Relations The conference was well attended by the local media and Boesak was questioned on the f u t u r e of South A f r i c a . He r e m a r k e d , "We don't know what the future holds. We have not yet begun the dismantling of the government s y s t e m , " and concluded. "apartheid as a system can't last."

Boesak discussed the future of democracy in South Africa calling f or a one m a n / o n e vote policy for all. "I cannot see how we can have a democracy without this. I just want rights 1 can identify with as an individual." He explained that the current government and the African Naitonal Congress (ANC) need to "Let the people have a f r e e and equal election to determine who will sit down at the table," and decide what to do.

Boesak also stressed the connection between the South African government and the Israeli government. He expressed the irony of a link between a government whose roots lie in Nazism and a government that arose as a direct result of Nazi

"stand alongside the people of South Africa."

"Nobody knew in the beginning of 1989 that we would end the y e a r the way we did " But with the d r a m a t i c c h a n g e in E a s t e r n E u r o p e , Boesak urged that it not be forgotten that such change has not yet come to South Africa.

"South Africa belongs to all its children, white and black," said Boesak. He expressed hope that the two sides will be able to agree and " l e a r n to s h a r e things together," to participate equally in "the creation of a new and totally free non-racial d e m o c r a c y , " where the rights of both blacks and whites would be equally respected. This is the only way, Boesak believes, the future of South Africa can be achieved, not through revenge.

'I am absolutely convinced the new day is coming. There is no way in which Mr. deKlerk, even if he wanted to, can turn back now.'

After receiving the degree from President John Jacobson, Boesak addressed the crowd on the theme, "South Africa Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: Facing the C h a l l e n g e s of o u r Times " He opened by saying, " I hope that what happens here tonight will lead the way for Hope to help in ways not possible before," and the Hope students, faculty and a d m i n i s t r a t i o n will c o m e to

persecution. Boesak likened the situation of the West Bank Palestinians to that of the blacks in South Africa.

F o l l o w i n g t h e p r e s s conference, an invitation-only dinner was held in the M a a s Auditorium for Boesak and the other Critical Issues speakers.

In her introductory address, Dickie expressed the sentiment.

"We had to work for the honor of h o n o r i n g y o u r w o r k , Allan Boesak," and told the crowd, "In honoring him, we confirm our own Christian identity." Dickie

Boesak m a d e it clear how the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s differs trom the South African a n t i - a p a r t h e i d movement. The Americans had a constitutionally-based u n d e r s t a n d i n g of justice the South Africans lack. Boesak explained that even non-violent protests and m a r c h e s a r e illegal and treasonous " b e c a u s e the

Critical Issues The root of world hunger identified as political corruption

Justice and violence debated

by P a m Lundberg assistant news editor Going along with the theme of Critical Issues Symposium 1190, the focus session entitled "Can Violence Advance the Cause of J u s t i c e ? " debated the issue of violence as a m e a n s to justice.

Speakers for this session were Donald Cronkite, chairperson of the biology d e p a r t m e n t at Hope.

Jack Holmes, chairperson of the political science d e p a r t m e n t , and Rev. J a m e s Van Hoeven, m e m b e r of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches.

The three speakers basically agreed that sometimes violence is necessary and the only possible way to bring about justice.

They also agreed that it depends on whose definition of justice is used, the oppressor s or the victim's.

A question often asked by the speakers was if the ends justify the means. They felt that this had a lot to do with the violence and justice debate.

Donald Cronkite spoke first. " V i o l e n c e will not a d v a n c e justice because violence is injustice," Cronkite concluded. He also stated that one can achieve a just society using violence depending on what one thinks justice is. If people's rights a r e violated, no justice is obtained.

Cronkite suggested using active r e s i s t e n c e to o v e r c o m e

violent m e a n s to justice. This is not to say, change places with the oppressor, as that would not bri n g j u s t i c e , a c c o r d i n g to Cronkite.

Jack Holmes spoke on the issue of violence and justice using world power as a base for his discussion. He said that the United States violence has been used to advance justice.

"Our national powers have been exercised for a good reason.

We would be a lot worse off if power had not been exercised," said Holmes. Rough going m a y be part of the struggle toward justice. The Korean War was an

last resort, never as a basis.

However, when violence s e e m s to be the only solution, the legitimacy of a r m e d revolution is discussed as f a r as the extent to which war h a r m s the c h a r a c t e r of the person and of society. The ultimate task of the church is to stand in solidarity with the oppressed and diminish power of the oppressors.

In response to the challenges of violence, the church must maintain three positions. Although war m a y be the responsibility of Christians, the use of weapons is never to be regarded as just is

-Dr. Donald Cronkite example used to express "good violence," with the end being democracy. Holmes concluded by stating that the United States power can and has prompted justice. Therefore, changes should be avoided to avoid disaster. Holmes added that change is not always terrible, however.

Pomroy began her lecture by asking the audience to imagine the horror of a " j u m b o jet-liner filled with children" crashing and burning every ten minutes at Metro Airport in Detroit. That is the rate at which children die of hunger throughout the world. She compared the coverage given to minor plance c r a s h e s with the c o v e r a g e of h u n g e r - r e l a t e d deaths throughout the world, the hunger problem is no longer getting the attention it did during the early 80s.

Pomroy views the hunger problem as a "solvable, reachable, reducible problem," while it no longer occurs nightly on the evening news, it is still a very real problem.

In h e r discussion, P o m r o y focused on problems in the " H o r n of A f r i c a " ( S u d a n .

Somalia and Ethiopia). She said that the hunger problem is still serious in this a r e a and is caused by political conflict. In Ethiopia this "political conflict," she said, is fueled by U.S. allies that pro^ vide w e a p o n s to E t h i o p i a n forces. Israel is a m a j o r supplier to Ethiopia, which is, in turn supplied by the U.S. The political conflict in Ethiopia have caused over five million people to file to Sudan where food is also limited.

According to Pomroy, since 1945 there have been over 130 wars, many of which have been in the Third World. Corruption and chaos credited in w a r t o r n areas has " s p i r a l l e d " the hunger problem. Also, "ethnic, sexual and racial discrimination" add to the problems.

She identified the root c a u s e of hunger to be political, r a t h e r than as a result of increasing populations or a c ts of nature.

P o m r o y discussed two a p proaches to dealing with the

S h e d e m o n s t r a t e d the magnitude of effectiveness of political actions over charitable efforts by comparing the eight million dollars raised in a charity concert effort for Ethiopia and $80 million raised for hunger relief through a "single act of Congress."

Pomroy urged those in attendance to write letters to politicians about the issue. Politicians rarely h e a r from people on inter national issues, especially from those asking for help for others To protest the U S A and U.S.S.R.'s indirect and direct support of military supplies to Ethiopian forces. Pomroy sug gested writing to Herman Cohen.

It proposes reducing military spending and putting half of this money into humanitarian aid and using the rest to help other problems such as the deficit. The resolution is written on the p r e m i s e that "a world is m o r e s e c u r e where people a r e well-fed,'' and is expected to be voted on this year in Con gress.

by Kris Olenik staff writer The Shattering of Apartheid: South Africa in the coming decade was the topic of discussion at a lunch session on Critical Issues day between the Rev.Dr Allan Boesak and Dr. J a m e s Van Hoeven.

Van Hoeven asked Boesak questions about the situation now in South Africa, focusing on the most relevant topics. He first asked Boesak what different things had catalyzed the a p a r theid situation to bring it where it is now Boesak felt that one of the most important influences in bringing about a change in South Africa is that P r i m e Minister LeKlerk is beginning to see the need for a c h a n g e . He r e a l i z e s t h a t , economically and politically, apartheid cannot continue. It is no longer possible to finance it or be accepted internationally with it intact The sanctions imposed by other countries started to have an effect, according to Boesak.

He said. ' T h e Reagan administration accepted apartheid through thick and thin." But finally the U.S. acknowledged the sanctions, p u t t i n g m o r e e c o n o m i c p r e s s u r e on t h e government of South Africa.

The South African economy is in bad shape and it's running our of cash to keep the apartheid system going, Boesak said. It costs 50 billion dollars to maintain apartheid. P a r t of the reason it costs so much is just because of the structures they h a v e to build J'.'I

to k e e p w h i t e s and b l a c k s separated For example, a high school built for whites sits e m p t y because there a r e not enough whites to use it. In the m e a n t i m e blacks a r e denied education because there a r e not enough schools for them and they a r e not a l l o w e d to u s e the " w h i t e schools," so new schools have to be built.

The continuing efforts of the defiance movement in South Africa has also played a part in instituting change because the government knows that the people will not quit until there is internal peace through equality and democracy.

But now that change has started to take place, Boesak hopes that LeKlerk understands that he can never go back. And the longer he waits, the greater the danger they face and the more difficult it will be to do what needs to be done.

Boesak said that Nelson Mandela and he believe that the president is sincere, although they wonder if he really grasps the gravity of the situation.

Mandela even said that he now thought it was a mistake that he left the church when he went into politics and wishes he had blended the two.

Van Hoeven then opened the meeting up to questions from the floor. One question was how did Boesak feel about nationalizing industry and its communist implications. In response, Boesak m a d e it clear that South Africa wants to achieve democratic socialism, and not the capitalism characteristic of the U S He feels that nationalizing industry can be good because it will give the government an opportunity for the redistribution of wealth.

Up to this time only a small minority has had the benefits and that needs to change.

Someone asked about Presid e n t B u s h ' s r e a c t i o n to Mandela's release. Boesak said that Bush was very happy and wanted to invite Mandela and LeKlerk to the U.S., but he also wanted to lift the sanctions right away. Boesak didn't understand this reaction and said, as he did at his opening address, that he only wants the U.S. to be consistent in the way they deal with Eastern Europe, Latin America and South Africa. The sanctions need to remain as incentive until all of the laws a r e changed and the new, free government and laws a r e irreversible.

Boesak was pleased to hear Mandela, who Boesak thought was m o r e of a political figure than a religious one, say that he has appreciated the role that the church has played and would like to see it continue. If the ANC were to take control of the government, Mandela said that Boesak is asking Bush not to he wouldn't want a quietistic repeat the mistake the U S m a d e church, but one that will speak with Namibia. Sanctions there our if there is something wrong.

necessary bloodshed and now, after 18 years, Namibia is still trying to achieve independence Another person asked if the people of South Africa felt that the positive effects of sanctions outweighed the negative Boesak feels that the general concensus is positive.

The question of "what can students do" was posed. In response Boesak said that Hope College had already missed a historic o p p o r tu n ity to p a r ticipate with other institutions in divesting; but apartheid is f a r from over and more support is still needed Hope needs to begin a dialogue between the board of trustees and South Africa to find out how the Hope community can best serve them.

Van Hoeven then asked about the roles of the different groups and the leadership in South Africa. There is some fighting between the black groups about how they should fight the whites.

But Boesak feels that total unity can never be achieved, within any country, and the only way to deal with the diversion is to t r e a t the groups like political parties and h a v r free elections.

Right now, Boesak says, " T h e African National Congress (ANC) c o m m a n d s e n o r m o u s respect from the black community and a gaining respect from the white c o m m u n i t y . " As f a r as leadership. Boesak feels that there a r e quite a few capable leaders among the different groups both older and experienced and younger and upcoming in the ANC. But he doesn't see someone over 70 taking leadership once a p a r t h e i d is b r o k e n d o w n .

Mandela, for instance, is 72 and would probably not lead the governmental changes but would still play a large role. Boesak has great respect for Mandela because of his devotion to the

cause and his selflessness, even a f t e r 27 y e a r s in jail.

"Nelson Mandela will always have an incredible amount of authority that rests with him because he is who he is - there's nothing anybody can do about that."

Finally, Van Hoeven inquired about the church's role in South Africa The church has had a greater role because the political leaders haven't been present to lead as much But now the church doesn't have to lead marches in place of the political leaders anymore, though it will still participate in them The c h u r c h ' s r o l e will c h a n g e somewhat, but in many ways will also remain the s a m e because " t h e harsh realities of apartheid haven't changed y e t , " according to Boesak.

Christians still have a responsibility to challenge the situation and change it until it is moving toward the model of the Kingdom of God. Even when there is change for the better in government, the church will always h a v e a role in c h a l l e n g i n g whoever is in government.

Boesak believes that the church must have a place at the negotiating table in order to see that whatever is happening in the political arena is closest to obeying God. " T h e reformed tradition in South Africa is represented by those who struggle against apartheid and for the integrity of the gospel of Jesus Christ," said Boesak, and Hope must follow in the footsteps of the denomination.

The last question had to do with how Boesak thought the change would be handled by both the blacks and whites. There is fear on both sides about what will happen with the majority, the blacks, in control.

Students protest campus KKK (CPS) -- About 300 students at Bradley University in Peoria, 111., demonstrated on February 8th to call for the punishment of a student who distributed fliers advocating the formation of a white supremacist group on campus.

Freshperson Matt Hale, who says that epuality is 44 disadvant a g e o u s to w h i t e p e o p l e / ' distributed fliers for a group called KKKOC, or Ku Klux Klan On Campus, on a private campus of 5,000 students.

The crowd carried a banner reading "We Want Action Now," while s p e a k e r s u r g e d administrators to speed their investigation of Hale, who could not be reached for comment.

A student formed a similar White Student Union a t Temple University in Philadelphia in December, 1968, and it is still a registered group today.

Critical Issues awash with successes The success ol last week s Critical Issues Symposium started with the* estimated thirteen hundred people c r a m m e d , standing room only, into Dimnent Chapel for the Rev.Dr.Allen Boesak's keynote address on Wednesday evening. Most of the focus sessions filled up and the Thursday luncheon through the final panal discussion in Dewitt Theater were all packed.

The student body and faculty a r e applauded for their attendence at so many of the events.

Most applause must be given to Dr.Robert Elder chair of the CIS committee and to Dean of Multicultural Events, Alfredo Gonzales for the high quality speakers and the overall professionalism of the program.

Unfortunately, everyone at attendence at CIS doesn't deserve applause. Concerned community m e m b e r s should be welcome at CIS, but not at the expense of students. For example, some community m e m b e r s were overheard, half-jokingly complaining that there were too many students a t the events. Also while waiting in the throng of people in the M a a s lobby before the luncheon, some community m e m b e r s were complaining about all the students moving around them.

Hopefully, these few community m e m b e r s were the exception, but CIS should be for Hope students first.

But should CIS events be required for Hope students? Requiring certain lectures for classes does ensure a good size crowd, but it also keeps people from attending the focus session of their choice and it might keep s o m e people out of the ones they want to hear.

The use of the overflow room for the Boesak's Wednesday speech and for the luncheon were good ideas and should be utilized more next year.

The full attendence is a tribute to the organizers, the topic choice and Boesak's taking part, but also showed a need for either bigger lecture halls (space limitations accepted) or for m o r e focus sessions to be offered.

But then a f t e r the poor attendence last year for the American D r e a m : Rags, Riches and Reality, one must wonder if the timely •changes in Europe and Nelson Mandela's release didn't contribute to community and student body interest. It'll be interesting to see how this y e a r ' s attendence affects next y e a r ' s CIS. Another of the high points of this past CIS was Rita N a k a s h i m a Brock's Thursday morning keynote. Hope College needs to h e a r alternative viewpoints to the dominant ones on campus.

On the other hand, the anti-Brock backlash is disappointing. To disagree with some of her points is fine, but to reject everything she said on account of those disagreements, is unworthy of Hope students and faculty (For m o r e on the Brock controversy see the letters to the editor).

Overall, though, the resounding success of "A Quest for Justice: A Christian P e r s p e c t i v e " is a tribute to those who organized it, spoke at it and attended it.

Letters to the Editor Pro-Choice table tent doesn't tell the whole story of abortion â&#x20AC;˘ 'itor Recently Students for Choice has been m a k i n g valiant attempts to " e d u c a t e " the c a m p u s about the issue of abortion. Since there is no c o u n t e r p a r t "Students for Life" group to clearly present the opposing viewpoint, I want to encourage people to look carefully at both sides of the issue before making any decision one way or the other.

Please also understand that this is not an a t t a c k on Students for Choice a s an organization, but simply an opinion from the other side of the issue.

F r o m my understanding of the table tent in Phelps, Students for Choice holds that 4< this decision (about abortion) can only be m a d e by the person it a f f e c t s . " Note the singular " p e r s o n " .

However, t h e r e a r e at least two p e o p l e i n v o l v e d in e v e r y pregnancy and the person whose life is affected the most has no "choice" in the m a t t e r whatsoever. Yes, I believe that life begins a t conception, but whether that is true or not is beside the ooint. We, with all of our modern medical technology, still cannot pinpoint the exact

moment that life begins. We can h y p o t h e s i z e , we can guesstimate, but we cannot say for sure. We cannot PROVE that life does NOT begin at conception. Babies have been born within the legal time limits for abortion and have survived to live normal lives. Were those children not alive?

Students for Choice feels that no one can decide for another person what they can and cannot do with their own body I a g r e e completely. But at what point does that fetus become a person?

If we cannot say for sure, is it right to a s s u m e that that fetus is Not a person and abort it? If, by chance, life does begin at conception, we have just committed murder. I know that sounds drastic, but take a look at Webster's definition of m u r d e r I am not saying that everyone who is pro-choice is a m u r d e r e r , but I do want people to look at the reasoning behind my stand, and the stand of m a n y others.

In our court system, one is innocent until proven guilty. The prosecution must provide proof that the accused is guilty. Until that time, innocence is assumed, and the rights of the accused a r e

Students miss the point Dear Editor.

The following a r e personal observations concerning the response of s o m e to the Critical Issues Symposium: The Quest for J u s t i c e . The most r e m a r k a b l e aspect of the presentations w a s not what w a s said by the speakers, though that w a s stimulating. R a t h e r , I found the reaction of m a n y in the audience to be f a r m o r e noteworthy, and, ultimately, quite disheartening.

The very f a c t s of the participation by the s p e a k e r s and the attendance of the audience would suggest t h a t all a r e concerned with the quest for justice. One requirement for justice is that we consider m a n y perspectives. To consider m e a n s not only to h e a r , but to think about, to weigh, t. " t r y on". I w a s saddened to h e a r , a s I left Dr. N a k a s h i m a Brock s focus session, m a n y m e m b e r s ol the audience immediately and emotionally r e j e c t e d outright a n y views that differed f r o m their own. One group could find nothing in h e r views with which to agree. This in spite of the f a c t that she staunchly a f f i r m s the existence of a god, the resurrection of Christ, and the need for a community of love to heal the wounds wrought by injustice.

What Christian would not a g r e e with these views? Some in t h e audience proclaimed that she did not u n d e r s t a n d (Christianity, I

p r e s u m e ) , that she was militantly f e m i n i s t ( a n d p o s s i b l y dangerous, I guess), or simply crazy. These immediate, emot i o n a l j u d g e m e n t s of h e r credibility m a k e it much easier to dismiss her views, and it seems, even one's own views if they a r e shared by this confined fanatic.

It is disturbing to see that, in nation a s diverse as the United States, one can reach the age of voung adulthood and still be shocked when presented with religious convictions that a r e somewhat different f r o m one's

own. (I can not help but wonder how these individuals might have reacted to someone of the Judaic.

Islam, or Hindu faiths, or to an a g n o s t i c or a t h e i s t ) Philosophers, s c i e n t i s t s , a n u theologians can argue and discuss the merits of assorted interpretations of the Bible, but in the context of the quest for justice, the f u n c t i o n a l significance of the life of Christ is that if we all live in the m a n n e r that Jesus lived, we would havrheaven on earth That someore

The issue cannot be solved merely by making abortion illegal - something must be done for all of those children that will be bom. I don't know exactly what yet, but I don't think that we can just sit and continue to abort hundreds of thousands of children a y e a r while we wait for someone to devise the perfect system. We need to take steps now and try to work out the problems within the system.

As a Christian, my faith reinforces my opinion on this issue.

But I don't want to " a r g u e " right now f r o m t h a t s t a n d p o i n t , because everyone by now is familiar with that view. I am biased for another reason - 1 was adopted. Had abortion been legal when I was conceived, I probably would not be h e r e today. Obviously, I'm glad I'm alive.

Student criticizes anchor's limited coverage.

Dear Editor, I vouii like to on a trend I have seen prevail during the c u r r e n t basketball season. It has been particularly evident during the past two basketballfilled w e e k e n d s . This t r e n d comes in the f o r m of an attitude.

It is a n attitude expressed by the student body when they said, following the weekend that we lost only 2 of 4 Hope vs. Calvin g a m e s . "Yeah too Calvin oeat Hope." It is expressed by SAC when they put out tabletents inviting those of us who w e r e not

able to get tickets to " t h e ' HopeCalvin g a m e to watch it on the Kletz television. Why was t h e r e no mention of the w o m e n ' s games, which w e r e played right here on c a m p u s ? This attitude is expressed by " t h e a n c h o r " when they devote twice a s much s p a c e to m e n ' s varsity basketball a s they do to any of the other basketball t e a m s . T h e attitude to which I a m r e f e r r i n g is a singlemindedness, a concentration, a belief that the only basketball here at Hope College is m e n i varsity basketball. . i inspectiOii i dif-

ferent attitude can be found to exist. It is a n attitude e m b r a c e d by the local shopkeeper who closes 15 minutes e a r l y on the day of a women's h o m e g a m e so that he can be here to watch the tip-off. It is expressed by several young m e m b e r s of the LiT Dutch Club who m a k e hand-lettered signs and d r e s s up in blue and orange to cheer their role models onto another victory. Happily, this attitude IS held by s o m e m e m b e r s of the student body /ho do ./V 1 :u:ues other than those played by the m e n ' s varsity t e a m This different attitude is

a realization that t h e r e a r e FOUR basketball t e a m s at this college - each one of which deserves an equal a m o u n t of our attention and support.

I hope this different attitude spreads. I sincerely believe that it can. It will t a k e effort. It will m e a n changing minds. It will involve breaking stereotypes. It would be one of the most positive changes that Hope College could ever m a k e .

Space seems to be an item that everyone wants. Whether it's space to put all of your junk or it's the space your boy-girlfriend talks about in the " I need some s p a c e " speech. I suppose that space is an important aspect of everyone's life because they m a k e such a big deal about it.

I can r e m e m b e r when I was choosing a room to live in last year, the first thing I looked at w a s the size ol t h e closet. Then I compared it to a housemate's closet and realized she had more space in her closet than mine.

But I suppose that space really doesn't mean much unless you do something with the space that you have. If you're just going to let the space sit there unused, what's the purpose of having so much space? There is no purpose unless of course, you're planning to j u s t sit a n d ponder the vastness of your space. The rational behind this m a y be that if your space is unused, you have

that much m o r e space at v o y disposal.

But then, used space is not really space a n y m o r e : it's me r e ly a place filled with stuff that ed to be space. So, once space has been used, it's value goes down and we begin wanting more space even if t h e r e ' s nothing in particular we want to fill it with.

So, what is this obsession with space? I suppose that it f s all a matter of expression. We use the space we have to show the world what we've got or who we are.

Our space is personal ground and intrusion on our s p a c e without invitation leads to w a r f a r e on the homefront (refer to all the times Mom cleaned your room while you were a t school).

However, now that we're at s c h o o l , o u r s p a c e is not something that our mothers have much control over. It's usually our g i r l - b o y f r i e n d s or r o o m m a t e s - h o u s e m a t e s who seem to squeeze into our space (thus leading to us having less space and therefore, causing us to want m o r e ) .

The woman on the phone took down our n a m e s and told us that our tickets would be held and we could pick t h e m up a f t e r noon on Tuesday. Well, that was easy, and we went to classes that day not having to worry about going through the hassle of getting to the Dow before the tickets were gone. However we received a phone call later that afternoon informing us t h a t they decided not to hold tickets, but instead they would be sold on a first come, first serve basis starting a t noon on Tuesday. Because of our previous experiences of misinformation with the ticket office, on Tuesday morning vve phoned to double check t h e time that ticket sales were to start.

Not to break their track record the ticket office had once again misinformed us, and ticket sales had begun sometime before 9 a.m. To m a k e a long story short,

we got our u c n e is around 11:40 a . m . and because the tickets w e r e general admission it did not m a t t e r t h a t w e were not there when ticket sales began.

The point of this letter has nothing to do with the quantity or quality of the tickets that were available. The point we wish to m a k e is that the ticket office should stick to the time they said ticket sales would begin. If they a r e not s u r e what time the sales will begin, they should not quote a time but instead tell students to call back later. This complaint m a y s e e m trivial but stop to think what would happen if all in formation w a s so misgiven We believe w e speak for a great deal of students when we express uur aggravation a t the misinformation given to us about ticket sales.

Two articles published by senior (HOPE) - Brian Andrew, a Hope College senior from Shaver-1 town. Pa. earning a m a j o r in history and a minor in political science, has had two articles published in " M a r i n e s , " the official magazine of the U.S. Marine Corps.

The articles were written while Andrew was interning for Marine Corps Historian Bud Shaw, a 1949 g r a d u a t e of Hope College, during the college's Washington Honors Semester P r o g r a m . Several students have interned under Shaw, who was pleased that Andrew's interests and abilities met the needs of the magazine.

"The Seagull" takes place in ' Russia at the turn of the century. ..The play is set on the beautiful estate of the wealthy Serin, ' where a gathering of family and ^friends a r e passing the s u m m e r months.

Two H o p e s t u d e n t s w e r e honored in a prose and poetry contest sponsored by The Grand Haven Press and Bookmen Book Store in Grand Haven as part of the Grand Haven Winterfest Michael Theune, a sophomore from Spring Lake, and Kate Worbois, a special u n d e r g r a d u a t e from Holland, won second place in prose and first place in poetry, respectively.

The poem, "Orange Men." is the second a w a r d winning poem Worbois has produced in recent years. For Worbois the creation of a poem is m o r e than m e r e art.

"I consider poetry to be a c r a f t , " says Worbois, "although there's certainly an artistic side to it."

Worbois s e e m s to believe this because most of her poems a r e based on not only creativity, but also inspiration.

"My poems a r e usually based on some sort of experience, whether a death, or something that I see," she said.

Though not encouraged as a young adult to become involved in the arts, Worbois has past life experiences which a r e very conducive to her " c r a f t . " Besides being an English m a j o r at Hope College, she also has a degree in nursing and has plans to be married in the n e a r future.

When Worbois was contacted by phone about winning the con-

test. she r e m e m b e r s "jotting it down and then a f t e r the conversation thinking 'did she really say first p l a c e ? " ' Theune's prose entry "Run For Me" combines the elements of mysticism and fantasy which he believes represents his style of writing. Thuene believes that this sense of "individuality" is important in prose creation.

"One of the first things in fin ding your own voice is destroying your own gods," says Theune referring to people s literary mentors as 'gods'. "Forget saying 'Boy, I'd love to write like that ...find something you want to say and say it."

"What you wrote moved m e . ' " T h e u n e r e c a l l s one l i s t e n e r r e s p o n d i n g with a f t e r his reading. " T h a t ' s what I wanted for these words I a r r a n g e d on a s h e e t of p a p e r to e f f e c t something," says Theune.

Both Worbois and Theune have special interests in English and philosophy and attribute m u c h of their creativity to that interest.

"Philosophy is my left b r a i n , " says Theune, explaining his interest in logic, "but to say t h a t ' s all I a m would be to deny the whole."

This is the second consecutive year that Theune has won second place in this particular contest.

Both a u t h o r s a r e pursuing plans to do m o r e future writing and a r e interested in applying their abilities especially in the field of education.

Soorts Dutch receive honors

The 1990 women's varsity basketball team enjoys the spotlight by winning the reqional title for the first time in school history.

Dutch capture regional title

by Betsy Verhey staff writer Appearing in post-season piay for the first time, the Flying Dutch captured the regional title and advanced to the quarterfinals last weekend.

The Hope College women's basketball team hosted the Great Lakes Regional of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III tournament this past weekend.

The fourth-ranked Flying Dutch advanced to the regional finals by defeating St. Benedict of Minnesota 73-60 Friday night.

Dina Disney scored the first five points of the g a m e and Hope never really looked back.

Trailing by no more than two points at any time. Hope took the lead for good on a beautiful wraparound pass from Disney to Robyn Schout with 8:41 left inthe first half. Holly VandenBerg led the Flying Dutch with 24 points and 12 rebounds Schout c a m e off the bench to add 14 points and six rebounds. Starting guards Disney a n d L i s s a N i e n h u i s scored 13 and 11 points respectively and each added six assists.

St. Benedict was led by junior f o r w a r d J o y c e S p a n i e r ' s 24 points. Junior center Mickey Jurewicz and freshperson guard Kelly Mahlum added 16 and 11 points respectively.

The other opening round g a m e featured two schools from the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

After splitting regular season

Trailing by two points with 3:21 left in the game, senior center Anna-Marie Postmus grabbed her first of two key offensive re bounds and scored the putback One minute later she was fouled trying to go up for a shot after her second offensive board.

Postmus sank both free throws lo give the Dutch a 65-63 lead.

Becky Krug tied the score for the Titans with 2:05 remaining With 1:44 left. Michele Sterk put Hope back in the lead with a b a s e l i n e j u m p e r and VandenBerg's f r e e throw gave the Dutch a three point edge.

Krug cut the lead to one with just 36 seconds remaining.

Even with a six second u»i ferential between the shot clock and the g a m e clock Hope ran the clock down completely. A mad scramble for the ball followed resulting in a turnover with

Oshkosh gaining possession. The Titans took the ball out of bounds with only three seconds Inft on the game clock. After mishandling the in-bound pass, Oshkosh never got off a final shot.

VandenBerg led the Dutch with 21 points and six rebounds.

Disney added 16 points and seven assists and Sterk c a m e through with some big buckets and finished with 11.

Leading all scorers was Krug with 22 points. Also scoring in double figures for the Titans were Tricia Betthauser with 17, LuAnn T a l m a with 14 and Maura McClintock with 12. McClintock also finished with 10 rebounds.

The consolation g a m e was won

by Wisconsin-Eau Claire 67-59.

Eau Claire was paced by Diane Ring who scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds Chrisy Hedin and Sue Christiansen added 15 an 13 points respectively.

: Calvin does hurt-dance on Hope in NCAA tourney

by Rochelle Anderson sports editor The Flying Dutchmen were defeated by Calvin in the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III r e g i o n a l s last S a t u r d a y .

Calvin defeated the Dutchmen on their home court in G r a n d Rapids by the score of 95-68.

The Flying Dutchmen had a tough time getting started last Saturday and had to play catch up the e n t i r e g a m e . Calvin started out strong and m a d e the first six points of the g a m e while Hope suffered f r o m careless mistakes.

Wade Gugino was the first to score for Hope and scored the first six points. Gugino also ran into early foul trouble, picking up three personals in the first five minutes of play.

With 15:07 left to play in the first half, an official time-out was called and Hope went to the bench to r e g a t h c r their t e a m .

Hope scored the next five

points, closing the gap to five (16-11), but the fouls continued to haunt the D u t c h m e n . B r u c e VanderKolk received an offensive foul, and Colly Carlson received a technical for arguing with the referee about a call.

With 10:06 left to play in the half, Hope called another timeout down by 17 (28-11). Most of the s t a r t e r s entered the g a m e and play calmed down considerably on the floor, but the Calvin fans were just w a r m i n g up. Gugino ended their cheers with a slam dunk. After that, play remained even with neither team making a change in the spread.

At the half, the Knights were winning by the score of 54-29. The momentum and the lead were in their favor. The Knights show 63 percent in field goals to Hope's 34 percent. Hope went zero for five in three pointers and 50 pecent a t the line. The t e a m a v e r a g e s 51.6 percent in field goals, 40.4 percent in three pointers, and 73.4 percent from the line.

Todd Hennick put in a three pointer, and Hope's Eric Elliott tried to counter with his own a f t e r stealing the ball, but it fell short. Elliott was held to just 11 points in the g a m e which is well below his a v e r a g e of 21 points per game.

VerHulst and Gugino led the way for Hope in the second half, making two shots a piece in the first five minutes of play, including another slam by Gugino.

Gugino had the high score for Hope with 26, just one shy of his record high score of 27, which c a m e a g a i a v the Knights the first time they played this year VerHulst added 12 to be the second leading scorer for Hope.

VerHulst did not play the Knights two weeks ago because of a bruised knee.

Hope scored 39 points in the second half, while Calvin w a s held to 41. Despite their efforts, though, Hope was just too far behind to c o m e b a c k . Jeff DeMasse hit a three pointer and Calvin countered, and then it was Elliot for three. The officials called a time-out with 9:54 left to play and Hope down 73-45.

Elliott picked up his third and fourth fouls shortly a f t e r 8:30 left to play and Gugino picked up fourth. With 2:58 to play Gugino fouled out and Calvin pulled out its s t a r t e r s which brought the crowd to its feet for a standing ovation. Hope then pulled out its

s t a r t e r s and the time was played out. C.B. Long scored the last basket of the g a m e by throwing up a shot a t the buzzer.

The loss ended the D u t c h m e n ' s winning season with a record of 22-4 and widened the gap in the Hope-Calvin s e r i e s to 61-57.
