ACCORDING TO Dean for A c a d e m i c A f f a i r s M o r r e t t e Rider, the A d A B will p r o b a b l y c o n d u c t o p e n hearings on t h e p r o p o s a l . S t u d e n t s and f a c u l t y will t h e n be given the o p p o r t u n i t y t o e x p r e s s their o p i n i o n s c o n c e r n i n g the 4-1-4. S t u d e n t Congress, in a straw vote, rejected the 4-1-4 plan last week in favor of a t w o - s e m e s t e r plan with a s t r e n g t h e n e d s u m m e r session. "If the p r o p o s a l is k i l l e d , " Rider s t a t e d , "it will be b e c a u s e the s t u d e n t s reject it in t h e o p e n hearings." "WE HAVE received largely s u p p o r t i v e c o m m e n t s f r o m the f a c u l t y , " Rider said. " H o w e v e r , the response of S t u d e n t C o n g r e s s frankly c a m e as a s h o c k . " The proposed 4-1-4 would divide the a c a d e m i c year i n t o three s e m e s t e r s of 14 w e e k s , f o u r weeks and 14 weeks. T h e fall semester will run f r o m S e p t e m b e r t o just b e f o r e C h r i s t m a s , f o l l o w e d by t h e J a n u a r y term with the spring s e m e s t e r e x t e n d i n g f r o m the c o n c l u s i o n of the J a n u a r y term t o May, e n d i n g a p p r o x i mately a week earlier t h a n t h e present spring s e m e s t e r . U N D E R THE p r o p o s e d plan, the daily class s c h e d u l e w o u l d be changed from 50-minute periods t o 6 0 - m i n u t e periods. Rider, in explaining the change, stated, " H a v i n g o n e - h o u r classes will allow an e q u a l a m o u n t of class time in a 14-week period as is n o w totaled in a 16-week p e r i o d . " The daily load o n the f a c u l t y will also be p r o p o r t i o n a t e l y increased, he added.
" T h e J a n u a r y term of t h e 4-1-4 will be e x t r e m e l y flexible, although s o m e r e s t r i c t i o n s will be necessary at the s t a r t , " Rider commented. THE ONE-MONTH J anuary term will be given over largely to intensive, i n d e p e n d e n t research, with the e m p h a s i s on c o n c e n t r a ted individual e x p l o r a t i o n , t h e dean s t a t e d . He added that conventional c o u r s e o f f e r i n g s will be available as well. Rider f u r t h e r stated that since course o f f e r i n g s are n o w spread over three s e m e s t e r s , a r e d u c t i o n in the n u m b e r of course o f f e r i n g s within a d e p a r t m e n t of 10 t o 15 per cent w o u l d be e x p e c t e d for the fall and s p r i n g semesters. S T U D E N T S will be allowed t o enroll for a t o t a l of 14 s e m e s t e r credit h o u r s in each of t h e fall and spring s e m e s t e r s . E n r o l l m e n t in the J a n u a r y t e r m will be restricted to four s e m e s t e r credit h o u r s per s t u d e n t . With the s t u d e n t ' s advisor's p e r m i s s i o n , 15 h o u r s m a y be taken in t h e spring and fall terms. F u r t h e r increases in c o u r s e loads in any of the three s e m e s t e r s must be a p p r o v e d by t h e Dean for A c a d e m i c Affairs. At the Jan. 25 f a c u l t y m e e t i n g , the c o m m i t t e e received a clear indication t h a t the f a c u l t y preferred a c a l e n d a r c h a n g e , and that this change e l i m i n a t e t h e so-called " l a m e d u c k " weeks in J a n u a r y , Rider e x p l a i n e d .

S t u d i e s have s h o w n that t h e plan d o e s not c o n f l i c t with a t h l e t i c or o t h e r o f f - c a m p u s p r o g r a m s , the dean s t a t e d . T h e cost of the change-over will be m i n i m a l , c o n s i s t i n g basically of the salary for a d i r e c t o r of the J a n u a r y t e r m , grade r e p o r t i n g and registration. Rider acknowledged. This cost increase could be alleviated by revenue collected f r o m n o n - H o p e s t u d e n t s who enroll in the college for the J a n u a r y t e r m , he a d d e d .

DEBATE C E N T E R E D a r o u n d an inferred c o n n e c t i o n between the c o m m i t t e e s p r o p o s a l and the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n ' s recent move to cut the cultural a f f a i r s budget by o n e - t h i r d . T h e p e t i t i o n states t h a t , while its signers " r e c o g n i z e the need for and s u p p o r t this kind of program (general e n t e r t a i n m e n t and social events), grave q u e s t i o n s of priority arise if it is to be f u n d e d at the e x p e n s e of a co-academic program such as cultural affairs." THE PETITION f u r t h e r cont e n d s that " c u t t i n g t h e cultural affairs budget and s t r i p p i n g the c o m m i t t e e of certain of its functions should not be t h e m e a n s of i m p l e m e n t i n g " a proposal designed to provide a balanced diet of c u l t u r a l and social activities. Cast in the p r o d u c t i o n are Doug N e u m a n n as the f a t h e r , a public school teacher w h o at the d r o p of a hat will act out semi-invented c h a r a c t e r s having s o m e c o n n e c t i o n with his daughter, and Patti Ross as the m o t h e r , kept busy with a c o n s t a n t r o u n d of child care, a p a r t m e n t care, pet animal t e n d i n g and the local a m a t e u r theatrical g r o u p .

The s e t t i n g for Joe Egg is designed by Michael G r i n d s t a f f . Kay H u b b a r d is assistant director. U n d e r the original title A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, the play was first p e r f o r m e d at the Citiz e n ' s T h e a t r e in Glasgow in 1967. It then had a long r u n on the L o n d o n stage, and played on B r o a d w a y in 1968.

difficult to f i n a n c e their education. According to Himebaugh, N i x o n ' s plan w o u l d increase the total a m o u n t of m o n e y available to s t u d e n t s . However, m o r e of it would be in t h e f o r m of loans and less in grants. H i m e b a u g h explained that u n d e r the legislation n o w in e f f e c t , a s t u d e n t w h o s e f a m i l y a d j u s t e d i n c o m e is less t h a n $ 6 0 0 0 a year may receive a federal grant of $ 1 0 0 0 , subsidized student loans amounting to $ 1 5 0 0 , and w o r k - s t u d y f u n d s of $ 5 0 0 f o r 15 h o u r s of work per week, yielding a t o t a l of $ 3 0 0 0 .
