News Chisholm: American Dream not realized by everyone

by Mpine Qakisa anchor staff writer Speaking to studente, faculty and guests in a packed Dimnent Memorial Chapel at Hope Coll e g e on M a r c h 1, S h i r l e y Chisholm, the first black woman to be elected to Congress, said, "We cannot endure another century without acknowledging the fact that an American d r e a m is not r e a l i t y f o r m i l l i o n s of Americans."

Chisholm, the keynote speaker for Hope's tenth annual Critical Issues Symposium, l4The American D r e a m : Rags, Riches, Reality," w a s referring to the 25 million Americans whose annual income is below the poverty line.

Chisolm's topic for the symposium, held March 1-2, was "The American D r e a m : Is It Really for Everyone?"

In 1968 Chisholm was elected to Congress, and in 1972 she sought the democratic party nomination for President but was not successful! in the nomination process. She has received honorary degrees in thirty-one institutions and is the author of Unbought and Unbosses and The Good Fight.

"In 1989 we still have problems in defining the diversity of this c u l t u r e / ' Chisholm said, "America is still divided by class, r a c e and ethnic groups."

Stating the steps that should be taken in recognizing the problem, she said that America needs to recognize that 44we have not yet fulfilled the d r e a m .

"Blacks, Hispanics and native Americans a r e still clustered at the bottom of the economical line," she explained, " a n d w o m e n in g e n e r a l a r e discriminated against. " H o w do w e e x p l a i n the American d r e a m to these people?" she asked. "How do we exp l a i n a d r e a m to n a t i v e Americans who a r e totally ignored in this c o u n t r y ? "

Chisholm, who remained a m e m b e r of the U.S. Congress until 1982, said that 30 percent of children in the Native American reservation c a m p s suffer from disease and malnutrition, "while we pride ourselves with America being a melting pot."

She challenged the audience to look a t this country politically, socially, economically and morally, "then ask ourselves about the principles of real democracy.

"We pride ourselves with a democracy that is the richest in the world," she added.

Chisholm also said that the principles and promises of real democracy remain an unfulfilled r e a l i t y f o r t h o u s a n d s of Americans.

The f o r m e r congress woman told the audience that no nation in history has been able to survive if it squanders its fortunes in defense r a t h e r than helping those in need.

"I believe those who a r e in government," she said, " a r e not sensitive or attuned to the needs of the people."

She stressed that people need to relate to one another as persons, not according to how properous a person is.

"Poor people a r e not worried about success; they a r e concerned about survival," she added.

"Many of you in this hall," she challenged, " h a v e not taken time to learn and understand why deprived people behave the way they do; you tend to suggest things in your own motions of success."

Chisholm told the audience that an a v e r a g e middle class American doesn't understand the struggles for existence in this country for a person who is not Caucasian.

She said that people still do not look at the resolutions of the problems.

Chisholm stated that we have to learn that we a r e related and "we a r e all travelers of the earth."

She told the audience that experience in this country has taught people to construct barriers of one's r a c e and sex.

"How can a d r e a m become reality if we h a v e to deal with b a r r i e r s that we h a v e cons t r u c t e d ? " she asked.

"We continuously refuse to acknowledge that indeed we a r e brothers and sisters in this Christian judicial society."

Chisholm said that pilgrims who c a m e to America, running away from political and religious persecution, had a d r e a m of "the world of the f r e e which America prides itself on.

"This country w a s founded by

Jews, Italians, English, the list goes on," she added.

She said that blacks c a m e to the shores of America with a totally different meaning than Europeans had. They c a m e as slaves to work in this country and make it economically rich, as it is today; thus, they seek a realization of this d r e a m too.

The f o r m e r congresswoman said that four million people who a r e unemployed in this country a r e minorities.

"This shows the continual racial h a t r e d , " she said Looking back on our history, " w e cannot afford to discriminate " " A t l e a s t t r y to r e m o v e obstacles that don't allow you to fulfill this American d r e a m for all," she challenged.

Chisholm told the audience to instill conviction and courage to do what is supposed to be done.

She challenged the audience to think about the welfare, patterns that will help t h o u s a n d s of

homeless people in this country and m a k e the American d r e a m a reality to all.

"Legislators a r e engaging constantly in words, words, words, p h r a s e s , p h r a s e s , p h r a s e s . . . n o t h i n g has been done," she said.

Chisholm said that we should always r e m e m b e r that it was one woman who saved F r a n c e ; it was one man, M a h a t m a Ghandi. who freed his nation; it was one woman, Rosa P a r k s , who refused to sit at the back of the bus; it was an one individual who started the Protestant Reformation.

In conclusion she challenged the audience, telling them that it is only through our ideals of love for our society that we can climb the ladder of success side by side and "help to m a k e the d r e a m to b e c o m e a r e a l i t y to a l l Americans "

American dream different for graying population

On hearing these statistics, many people conclude that t h e elderly could be relieved of those

stresses if placed in some sort of group housing or nursing home a r r a n g e m e n t . However, these situations, like a nursing home, often impose so many restrictions on the residents that basic freedoms a r e denied. What correlates m o r e with the American d r e a m that f r e e d o m ? DeVelder explained how residents may not be allowed to decide when family m e m b e r s m a y visit due to specific visitation hours.

Model U.N. focuses on international issues HOLLAND - Hope College will sponsor its 17th annual Model United Nations Conference Thursday and F r i d a y , March 9-10, with nearly 1,000 high school students f r o m 37 high schools participating.

Acting as delegates f r o m 159 m e m b e r nations of the United N a t i o n s in t h r e e G e n e r a l Assemblies, five Security Councils, one International Court of Justice (ICJ), and two Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Commissions, these students will be taking part in a simulated exercise focusing on international issues. The Guest Speaker for the Conference will be Philip Tanis, mayor of Holland and a 1987 Hope College graduate. Tanis will be giving a speech a t the ECOSOC-Security Council-ICJAdvisor Banquet on Thursday evening, and he will also be addressing the General Assembly m e m b e r s with his keynote speech Friday morning a t 10:15 a.m.

The public is welcome to attend t h e F r i d a y , M a r c h 10 keynote address.

The participating high school students will be judged on how well they portray their country and their clarity and effectiveness in discussing the issues at hand. The a w a r d s will be presented at 4:30 p.m. in Dimnent Chapel on Friday.

The Hope College Model U.N. is organized by students in a political science course aimed at the understanding of international politics and the United Nat i o n s ' r o l e in i n t e r n a t i o n a l disputes. More News College administrators confiscate student newspaper ( C P S ) - A New Jersey Institute of Technology official, anxious to impress a group of high school students thinking of enrolling at the school, confiscated copies of the school paper and kept them out of sight until the prospective freshmen left campus.

The Feb. 17 edition of The Vector, the student paper, reported that a student m e m b e r had been assaulted and robbed near the Newark c a m p u s a few days earlier.

Admisions Dean William Anderson, apparently worried the story would tarnish the visitor's view of NJIT, ordered a student to take the p a p e r s f r o m their display bins and store them in the admissions office.

44 It is hard to believe administrators could be so unthinking and so ignorant of f r e e pr e ss rights," said Mark Goodman of the Student P r e s s Law Center in Washington, D.C. " W e ' r e looking for an apology and a g u a r a n t e e it won't happen again," said Michael Hanna, The Vector's managing editor. " I t w a s u n f o r t u n a t e . It shouldn't have happened. I'm going to do everything in my power to m a k e s u r e this won't happen

again," Dean of Student Services Constance Murray said.

Anderson's action, Hanna maintained, was another example of NJIT officials downplaying campus crime, adding that if new students don't know c r i m e is a problem on the Newark campus, they could get hurt.

"Being in Newark, we a r e a w a r e of c r i m e , " replied NJI T spokeswoman Arlene Gilbert, but she said NJIT has a lower c r i m e than okther New J e r s e y campuses and that it has improved its security recently.

Vector Editor-in-chief Mark Budzyn discovered the newspapers were missing f r o m their bins, and when he asked about the p a p e r s at the school information desk, he w a s told the admissions office had t a k e n them just before a Feb. 19 open house for visiting high school seniors.

When he asked about the papers at the admissions office, Budzyn says he was stonewalled.

Angered, Budzyn placed signs on the bins that said the p a p e r s were confiscated by the admissions office.

The signs prompted the admissions office to turn the bins

around so the visiting high school seniors didn't see them. Budzyn then put signs on the back of the bins as well.

The newspapers were returned a few hours later, a f t e r the open house c a m p u s tours ended.

Anderson, who didn't return College P r e s s Service's calls, met with several Vactor staffers Feb. 21 to discuss the issue, and although he told them he 4 'realized it was a bad judgement call, he didn't sound all that upset," Hanna said. " H e wants people to see the best of the institute," Hanna said of A n d e r s o n . " H e doesn't understand this is censorship.

NJIT President Saul F e n s t e r "doesn't consider this lightly," said school spokeswoman Phyllis Miller. " H e wants to m a k e sure it doesn't happen a g a i n . " Although the Student P r e s s Law E n t e r ' s Goodman thinks the paper's staff could sue, Hanna says The Vector staff is satisfied with Anderson's apology and the administration's g u a r a n t e e s that p a p e r s won't be confiscated again.

U.S. Iranian students not affected by Rushdie uproar ( C P S ) - For Mohammed, an Iranian student at the University of Idaho, the fears and riots and controversy about novelist Salman Rushdie's book "Satanic Verses" seem far removed.

While in 1979 the 50,000-some Iranian students then studying in the U.S. reported incidents of harassment from their American-born classmates a n g e r e d by t h e h o l d i n g of American hostges in Teheran, Mohammed (who asked that his real n a m e not be used) said the possibility that he could become a local t a r g e t for anti-Iranian p r e j u d i c e s p r o v o k e d by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's o f f e r to p a y f o r R u s h d i e ' s murder never occured to him. " I haven't heard of any problems," Mohammed said. " T h e people here in Idaho a r e very nice."

Mohammed's experience app e a r s to be typical. The 9,00 Iranians still on U.S. campuses say the upheaval about Rushdie and the rise in tensions between the U.S. and I r a n hasn't affected them much a t all.

" I ' d be surprised if anything c a m e up," said Colin Davies of the National Association for F o r e i g n S t u d e n t A f f a i r s in Washington D C. " T h e r e may by heightened anti-Khohmeini feelings, but I don't think there will be problems for students."

Some others a r e less certain.

"Unless there is an attempt by the (American) media to understand why the Muslim world is offended, there will be a rise of opposition to Islam in this count r y , " predicted Seyyed Hossein Nasr, an Islamic Studies professor at George Washington University.

Many Muslims maintain Rushdie's book blasphemes the prophet Mohammed in a fictional d r e a m s e q u e n c e in w h i c h Mohammed momentarily recognizes women as saints.

Muslim clerics in P a k i s t a n and Iran heatedly denounced the book a s it was being released in Europe and the United States in mid-February, touching off wild anti-Rushdie and anti-West demonstrations.

Iranian leader Khomeini then called for the murder of Rushdie and anyone else associated

withthe publication of the book, promising 2.4 million dollars - a bounty later increased to 4.9 million - to Rushdie's assassin.

"One has to look at what's going on in Iran, to understand the controversy surrounding book," s u g g e s t e d S a l e m Ajluni, an associate professor of economics at North Carolina's Guilford College.

"You don't h e a r of Muslims protesting in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia of Nigeria," said Ajluni.

"The image the media have painted is that the Muslim world is reacting to this book, but most of the controversy has been in Iran."

Ajluni maintained isolationists in Iran a r e using the book to help them steer the nation c l e a r of W e a t e m influences in the policy vacuum a f t e r the w a r with Iraq, which ended in 1968.

He pointed out the European community's withdrawal of its diplomats f r o m I r a n is protest of the m u r d e r contract is exactly what the Iranian isolationists want to fulfill " t h e i r vision of what the Islamic Republic should be. M

'Profs are lazy bums' says book

by J a n e t Singleton (CPS) ~ P r o f e s s o r s who curl up by the fireplace with this winter's new book about what's wrong with colleges - Charles Sykes' " P r o f s c a m " ~ might end up throwing it in. This hotly debated expose depicts academicians a s overpaid, underworked p r i m a d o n n a s who " a l m o s t singlehandedly...destroyed the university a s a center for learning."

College teachers, Sykes said, a r e no good.

They have been m a d e fat and complacent by tenure, he charged, which frees them to abandon their students in favor of chasing money and prestige through office politicking, useless r e s e a r c h and big grants.

"They have distorted university curriculums to a c c o m o d a t e their own narrow and selfish int e r e s t s , " Sykes writes.

These interests a r e so trendy that they produce " c u r r i c u l u m s that look like they were designed by a g a m e show host," Sykes added in an interview.

To Sykes, profs a r e responsible for a variety of ills like "pseudosc i e n c e , " 4 i j u n k t h i n k " and ,4 t w i s t ( i n g ) t h e i d e a l s of academic freedom into a system in which they a r e accountable to no one."

"A lot of u n d e r g r a d s go to some of the most prestigious universities in the country, like the U n i v e r s i t y of Michigan, Berkeley, even H a r v a r d , based on the reputations of their professors," Sykes says.

"What they find is something very different f r o m what they and their parents have been led to expect. They think they'll be learning a t the feet of those professors and what they find is, if they see those professors at all, it's as a blur in the parking lot " Sykes maintained it c a n all be changed by eliminating tenure.

Such a proposal, naturally, is not without detractors. Sykes' idea, noted Dr. J o n a t h a n Knight of the American Association of University P r o f e s s o r s (AAUP), would destroy a c a d e m i c freedom.

"Sykes says eliminating tenure will keep everybody on

their toes " Knight said. "More likely it'li keep everybody on their k n e e s . " Many of the greatest thinkers - from Socrates to J e s u s to Galileo to Freud to even certain scholars during the McCarthy era in the United States - lost jobs, money, reputations and even their lives for pursuing the i d e a s t h a t t h e p o l i t i c a l or religious leaders of their day found offensive.

Tenure arose a s a way to protect them and the masses of more anonymous college teachers f r o m the political whim of administrators, who might otherwise succumb to community pressue to punish professors engaged in misunderstood or unpopular r e se a r c h.

The author who wants to dump tenure is, ironically, himself the son of a professor, the late J a y G. Sykes, who w a s a journalism professor a t the U n i v e r s i t y of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. " P r o f s c a m " grew out of a 1985 article written by the senior Sykes for Milwaukee Magazine, then edited by his son. In the piece, entitled " T h e Sorcerers and the Seven-And-A-Half-Hour Week," the senior Sykes accused his colleagues of poor work habits.

44 It g e n e r a t e d a g i g a n t i c response," the younger Sykes. who is a journalist, recalled. " T h e letters and calls indicated that this thing had touched a nerve. The administration and lots of faculty (at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) were outraged. But s o m e faculty, students and parents said, 'Yeah, this is absolutely c o r r e c t . ' " After his f a t h e r ' s death, Sykes set out to develop the article into a book, and, in the process, c a m e to focus on the quality of college teaching.

He found that most profs teach only 7Vfc to 9 hours a week. They leave instructing and guiding students to g r a d assistants, who, Sykes said, now comprise a "bitter a c a d e m i c u n d e r c l a s s " often of foreigners who c a n ' t speak understandable English. " I have to a d m i t I w a s appalle d , " Sykes said, " a t how deeply i n g r a i n e d t h e c o n t e m p t for teaching is "

People who like and a r e good at teaching don't get tenure because they m a y not be good at publishing, Sykes contended.

"To be a teacher in higher education is virtually to c o m m i t professional suicide," he said.

It would be different without tenure. " T e n u r e corrupts, enervates and dulls higher educat i o n , " S y k e s w r o t e in "Profscam."

Knight, one of Sykes' most vocal critics, disagreed emphatically. " S y k e s b e l i e v e s t h a t by eliminating tenure, you'll weed out the deadwood and the incompetents, people won't get free rides," Knight argued. Yet bosses who hire incompetents often a r e loathe to admit later they m a d e a hiring mistake, and un tenured teachers would be unlikely to risk angering their bosses by asking to weed out their bad colleagues.

Consequently, it's likely Sykes' system would lead to more deadwood, not less. Knight maintained.

Without the job security tenure gives them. Knight added, the best professors would move on to where the real money is: private industry.

"If you're a computer scientist earning $50,000 a year a t a university without t e n u r e , " Knight hypothesised, " w h y should you stay when you can go to the Silicon Valley and get $100,000 and also don't have tenure?"

Dr. Robert Kreiser, also of the AAUP, added Sykes' correct estimate that professors spend less than nine hours a week teaching " m i s r e p r e s e n t s the workload."

Professors, Kreiser said, spend a lot m o r e time " p r e p a r ing for classes, meeting with students, r e s e a r c h i n g . " While a p r o f e s s o r a t t h e University of Rochester, Kreiser said he worked between "40 and 60 hours a week."

But even Knight conceded talented professors a r e dismissed when they fail to devote a s much time to r e s e a r c h a n d publishing as their tenured colleagues. " S o m e t i m e s the very finest teachers a r e let go."

National News Baker to visit Moscow in May (AP) - Secretary of State J a m e s Baker says he'll visit Moscow in May - a trip, he says, that could lead to renewed nuclear-arms talks. Baker and Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze met yesterday in Vienna, Austria, and a g r e e d on the Baker trip. The secretary says the Bush administration expects to finish its review of strategic-arms policy by the end of April.

Soviet Union standard of living far below ours

by Rianna Vande Vusse Special to the a n c h o r I suppose that I should h a v e been shocked when I first a r r i v e d in Moscow. The students in m y group were given just a few hours to walk a r o u n d the city before flying on to K r a s n o d a r , and we e n d e a v o r e d to m a k e good use of the time. As we w a n d e r e d through GUM, t h e s t a t e departm e n t s t o r e l o c a t e d on R e d Square, I was actually s u r p r i s e d that the building w a s n ' t e m p t y .

Everything I h a d e v e r r e a d about the Soviet Union told m e that there w a s "nothing to b u y " in the shops. So, as I walked through this s t o r e in Moscow, I didn't notice the missing things a s much a s the things that w e r e there: scarves, sewing materials, handbags and groceries.

What did s t r i k e me, however, was the different aesthetics of the place. Everything s t r u c k m e a s being., ugly. The buildings, t h e c l o t h e s p e o p l e w o r e -everything s e e m e d to be grey and old-looking. T h e r e w e r e no tall, rectangular, shiny s k y s c r a p e r s or brand-new motorcars. Everything I associated with a big city s e e m e d to be missing It was later, when we moved on to Krasnodar, t h a t I began to notice the mysterious lack of sugar, soap, chocolate, quality shoes a n d clothes, novels written by g r e a t Russian authors like Dostoevski! and Tolstoi, nylons, and a list of other things which

goes on indefinitely.

How, then, do Soviet citizens live? Very differently ~ both f r o m us a n d f r o m e a c h other.

This difference begins with the g r e a t d i s p a r i t y b e t w e e n individual s a l a r i e s . Workers c a n m a k e a s little a s 90 rubles a month or a s m a n y as 600 a month. This difference, then, is e x a c e r b a t e d by f a m i l y situations. F o r instance, people who e a r n high s a l a r i e s often h a v e spouses who e a r n well, and the opposite is also true. While one family lives in a l a r g e , 4-room a p a r t m e n t ( k i t c h e n a n d entryway a r e never counted in Soviet figures), owns a car, laundry m a c h i n e and stereo, a n d w e a r s nice clothes bought off of the black m a r k e t , a n o t h e r f a m i l y squeaks its way through life a n d lives in a 1 or 2-room domik (tiny little house).

The difference continues with the types of food they can a f f o r d to buy. Food is an item which varies g r e a t l y f r o m region to region in the Soviet Union according to local production and distribution channels. Meat prices e v e r y w h e r e a r e shockingly high, and even higher still for privately produced (but f r e s h e r m e a t s sold in f a r m e r s ' m a r k e t s .

A chicken c a n cost a s m u c h a s 16 dollars if you use the official exchange r a t e . Vegetables a r e also a shock. While in s o m e southern cities they a r e p r e s e n t y e a r round in the m a r k e t , in cities farther north they a r e virtually seasonal. Tomatoes c a n almost never be found in Moscow f r o m

September 10 May, and most other vegetables a r e m u c h the same.

Machinery in the h o m e is a r a r e and beautiful thing. I can count on one hand the n u m b e r of laundry m a c h i n e s I saw in three months, a n d I n e v e r saw a d r y e r although I ' m led to believe that they do exist. F o r g e t about vacuum m a c h i n e s , blow d r y e r s , dish washing m a c h i n e s , m i c r o w a v e ovens, dust busters and any n u m b e r of other handy items A m e r i c a n s use to cut the time they spend on housework.

Most Soviet citizens h a v e h e a r d of them, but almost n e v e r seen them. The d i f f e r e n c e it m a k e s in their lifestyle is incredible. Try washing a w e e k ' s w o r t h of clothes in your tub once, wringing it out, a n d hanging it on a line to dry. J u s t one of the chores that Soviet w o m e n do on a daily basis takes m o r e t i m e than most of us spend on chores in a week.

This situation is m a d e even worse by the total lack of most forms of sanitation and cleaning d e t e r g e n t s . Floors and bathrooms a r e commonly washed with w a r m w a t e r which is swished over the floor by a woman who wrings the m o p with her bare hands. Without the aid of disinfectant a n d deodorizers or just plain a m m o n i a , public toilets really smell like what they're used for, and toilet paper, outside of Intourist hotels, is never provided. It's truly a bring-your-own-or-suffer-theconsequences kind of thing.

the shoes they put on their feet a r e also surprising. They a r e also, p a r t i c u l a r l y for w o m e n ' s boots, unspeakably expensive.

S t a t e - m a d e boots, when they can be found, run a r o u n d 200 rubles (about $400)! Keep in mind that the a v e r a g e s a l a r y is 127 rubles.

Most other clothes a r e also very expensive, and blue j e a n s , by the time they r e a c h the c o n s u m e r on the black m a r k e t , run a n y w h e r e from 190 rubles to 300 rubles.

Women a r e expected to go to work in s k i r t s a n d n y l o n s .

Nylons, when available, s t a r t at 10 rubles and go up f r o m there.

Imagine spending one-tenth of your s a l a r y on a pair of nylons.

My mother told me there would be days like this Has this ever happened to you?

You w a k e up one weekend morn ing feeling healthy and refreshed. The day a h e a d really isn't very full, according to your personal calender. Moving at a leisurely pace, you work on your daily tasks a n d finish them whenever. You h a v e plenty of time to r e a d and socialize a n d enjoy a b r e a k f r o m the hectic pace of the typical week. Eleven p.m. rolls around a n d sees you (for once) p r e p a r i n g to go to bed.

Sounds like a perfect day, right? Wrong. No day could h a v e been this easy. T h e w a r n i n g bell doesn't sound loudly enough for you to realize t h a t you h a v e just forgotten to w r i t e the five-page paper which is d u e tomorrow a t 8 a . m . which is worth 15 p e r c e n t of your g r a d e .

I bring this u p b e c a u s e 1 h a v e just been the victim of such a day. You see, this article is now 19 hours late.

I didn't m e a n to forget to write

it. It just slipped m y mind. 1 suppose that happens to a lot of people when they have p r o j e c t s due in the f u t u r e . The tendency is to put the project off " f o r just a little while. I'll have t i m e later.

Maybe this weekend, e v e n . " Yeah, right. T h a t ' s w h a t I said.

However, while sifting through m y panic in deciding what to do about my d i l e m m a , I h a v e c o m e u p with a few ideas on how to combat f a t a l forgetfulness: 1. Write (on p a p e r o r walls or w h a t e v e r ) things like " D o n ' t forget to write your m i d t e r m thesis," " Y o u h a v e to write your m i d t e r m t h e s i s , " " H a v e you written y o u r m i d t e r m thesis yet?" and hang these blatant r e m i n d e r s all over the place.

Good places a r e b a t h r o o m m i r rors, d r e s s e r s , a b o v e your desk, in your closet, or e v e n on y o u r coat. H i e i m p o r t a n t thing is to keep in m i n d the f a c t t h a t if you forget this project, life could become m i s e r a b l e .

2. Do you have a personal events c a l e n d e r ? If you h a v e one, do you use it? If the a n s w e r s to these questions a r e yes, then fill in with bright colors the due date for the project. Look at this book e v e r y d a y . Look at it a lot.

3. Set t i m e aside in your calend a r (or m e n t a l schedule) to work on the project little by little.

Chances a r e , once you s t a r t doing the work, you won't be inclined to forget about its existence.

The h a r d p a r t is actually beginning. Here I c a n ' t offer a n y help.

T h a t ' s your job.

4. Actually use the t i m e set aside in your c a l e n d a r (or mental schedule) to work on the project.

Small list, right? Trivial stuff, right? Actually, no. It is small, but it is e x t r e m e l y powerful. It does work. Once you m a k e t h a t first sign, you h a v e m a d e your b r a i n realize t h a t t h e r e is w o r k to do in the f u t u r e .

When you set a s i d e t h a t t i m e

for work, again, you trigger a response up above that says, 'Hey, I'd better not forget this!

Just look at all these signs all over the place. Maybe we'd best get b u s y . " Once your brain s a y s this, half the battle is won in your favor.

The next p a r t is the a c t u a l grinding out of the p a p e r or article.

But, at least you r e m e m b e r e d to do the a s s i g n m e n t . Now, I gotta get this to the a n c h o r office. I hope I ' m not too late.

CIS good, but still has room for improvement The 1989 Critical Issues Symposium, " T h e American D r e a m : Rags, Riches, R e a l i t y " had the most potential for success of any of the r e c e n t Critical Issues Symposiums. T h e n u m b e r and quality of the s p e a k e r s indicated that o r g a n i z e r s of the event h a d worked hard, and t h a t students, faculty and c o m m u n i t y m e m b e r s would be both entertained a n d enlightened by the lectures on Wednesday evening and T h u r s d a y morning.

And, in fact, this w a s the case. Speakers such as Shirley Chisholm and J a m e s B r a tts m a d e their points on the American d r e a m eloquently, informing their audiences and causing us all to r e e x a m i n e what the American d r e a m m e a n s to each of us.

However, despite all this, the 1989 Critical Issues Symposium was not a s well-structured or a s focused a s it might have been. Despite the f a c t that lectures were tailored to individual topics such as economics, conservation a n d the homeless, it felt a s though the entire s y m p o s i u m was a bit r e d u n d a n t .

P e r h a p s it s e e m e d this w a y b e c a u s e t h e r e were seven s e p a r a t e focus sessions on Wednesday night, of which only one could be attended, while in previous y e a r s t h e r e w e r e a s few a s four s e p a r a t e focus sessions. In this, the evening schedule seemed to be both a bit long a n d also less accessible to people. P e r h a p s the overall response to the s y m p o s i u m would h a v e been even b e t t e r had there been focus sessions offered at different t i m e s throughout the evening instead of all at once.

Also, the d a y t i m e sessions w e r e possibly a bit long to retain e v e r y o n e ' s attention. Although the sessions were certainly inform a t i v e and enjoyable, a t t e n d a n c e a n d participation w e r e below expectations. A solution might be to m a k e the T h u r s d a y sessions less lecture-oriented and e n c o u r a g e m o r e a u d i e n c e participation a n d involvement.

All in all, 44 The A m e r i c a n D r e a m : R a g s , Riches, R e a l i t y " w a s very well done. It w a s well worth the e f f o r t a n d support it received f r o m the faculty and students, a n d brought to Hope College a wealth of excellent s p e a k e r s to lecture on a very relevant, vital topic. E v e n so, the a n n u a l Critical Issues Symposium h a s room for improvement in the future, a n d room to grow a s well.

It's n e v e r a good sign when a friend s t a g g e r s into your room on a Sunday night. And it w a s n ' t that distinct loud-talking s t a g g e r that your illegal mind m a y be ima g i n i n g . No, t h i s w a s t h a t distinct s t a g g e r t h a t r e m i n d s you of someone c a r r y i n g a load of bricks on their shoulders.

E r n i e collapsed into m y roomm a t e s green, non-Hope-issued desk chair. I turned f r o m the keyboard and mentally put a w a y the pen. I would like to say I w a s happy to see a friend, but I don't enjoy lying. As I looked a t E r n i e , m y mind skipped f r o m the obvious need of a friend to the List: Social P s y c h test, s t a t s test, lit paper, lit reading, a column, thank you notes...ad infintum. As 1 thought about E r n i e ' s situation, I s t a r t e d to smile...on the inside a n y w a y . B e f o r e he h a d a r r i v e d I was seriously considering diving into t h e g r i n d e r myself with ail the stuff t h a t I h a v e to do in the next few weeks. I w a s feeling the g r e a t weight of m y responsibUiUes. But you know I don't h a v e any d e s i r e to be s p a m Sure, I've got a lot to do, but is

any of it w o r t h becoming Ernie?

You bet your a s p a r a g u s it ain't.

Once I h a d a grip on that special i n w a r d smile that comes with self-realization, I did the only thing I c a n ever do at those moments.

I got weird.

I like weird. Weird is fun. It's being alive a n d sucking on a tootsie roll pop. Weird is being able to look at t h e List and say "Yeah, c a n I do t h a t ? I can do that " Maybe not today and maybe not tomorrow, but one day at a time, thank you Schneider.

O n c e I h a d r e g a i n e d my p e r s p e c t i v e on life and mentally bit the lollipop, I started talking to E r n i e . I encouraged, I joked, I chided, I quoted Monty Python, but most of all, I just let my weirdness flow out of me into him. Soon E r n i e was strong enough to back-flip up to the edge of the g r i n d e r . Sure he's still s t r e s s e d , b u t a t least now he isn't spammed.

E r n i e soon left and I returned to m y c o m p u t e r , humming a few b a r s of " S h e Got the Gold Mine, a n d I Got t h e S h a f t . " I was weird a g a i n and it felt good I wish I h a d a tootsie roll pop.

March 8, 1989 The weekend is the time to unwind, relax, kick up your heels a bit, catch u p on letter writing, take in a movie, go out with friends, sleep in, and p r e p a r e for the next week's classes, right?

Wrong. Some things never turn out how you plan them to, and weekends a r e a t the top of m y list. Regardless of what is going on and the work I have to do, they all turn out the s a m e .

They begin F r i d a y a t 3:30 with somewhat of a headache, a s if I can't handle the thought of not having classes for another 66 hours. Anyway, the h e a d a c h e and the fact that it is F r i d a y mean that the two hours until supper can be wasted. And they are.

Friday supper, in my opinion, is by far the worst m e a l of the week. But because it's F r i d a y , you stay in P h e l p s for at least an hour. After all, classes don't start again for another 64. Often I have good intentions of studying a f t e r supper for a few hours, but this never works because I've worked too h a r d all week and my brain is a l r e a d y starting to slip into the weekend mode.

Friday night passes quickly, and the p r o m i s e of having a full weekend a h e a d is still bright. I decide to sleep until I wake up in the morning and do a couple hours worth of homework before going to lunch.

But I n e v e r m a n a g e to get those couple of hours in. As soon as I get up, it's lunchtime. So, off to lunch. Once again, you c a n stay in P h e l p s longer than usual because it's the weekend, and isn't it nice to not h a v e any m o r e classes for 46 hours?

It isn't really n e c e s s a r y to start studying immediately a f t e r lunch because, a f t e r all, it is Saturday. It is also traditional to do something like go downtown on Saturday afternoon. And by the time you do get going on the homework, it's just about dinnertime, so it's not really worth s t a r -

page 9 ting anything anyway.

The distraction factor when combined with Phelps'-steakand-fries-in-the-tummy feeling makes it nearly impossible to do worthwhile studying a f t e r supper. You can kid yourself and try, but thoughts keep turning to going out in a little while and nothing gets done. It is best to realize this f r o m the beginning and not even a t t e m p t . Besides, classes don't s t a r t for another 40 hours.

Saturday nights a r e always fun except for the feeling I get when I return home and realize that the day a f t e r tomorrow is Monday.

But since it is still Saturday (though in reality it m a y well be Sunday morning), I go to bed trying not to think about it.

Sometimes I set the a l a r m for early so I'll have time to do something before church, but needless to say, this doesn't work either. If I ever do happen to rise when the bell sounds, I find plenty of other things to do with the time. The hour-long church service comes and goes and once a g a i n you find yourself a t Phelps You a r e finished with dinner a t 11:35 but since it is a well-known fact t h a t homework on Sunday a f t e m n o n s can only be started on the half-hour and you just missed 11:30, it is necessary to wait until noon.

It is a t this time that the Sunday panic sets in. It suddenly occurs to m e that I have a heck of a lot of work to do in the next 12 hours. Not only do I have a lot of work, but I have a lot of long and difficult work to do. Nevertheless, I always do the fun a n d easy stuff first.

Anatomy of a weekend

Which usually takes m e until 4:00, at which t i m e I go into the computer room, sit down at the terminal and decide what to write my column on which is due at 7:00. As soon a s it is finished (or I ' m tired of working on it) I turn it in and go straight to supper.

SPOTS OF TIME

After supper, the Sunday panic intensifies greatly.

Suddenly I have four huge pieces of work to do, and it's 7:00 and classes start in just 15 hours.

Usually at this time I start to feel sick.

Maybe it's a hereditary thing.

Arts Israeli choir blends Hebrew folk tunes with Western music

by Christine Modey Special to the anchor The I s r a e l National Choir Rinat (or " s o n g " ) , under the direction of Stanley Sperber, presented a concert of sacred and secular music in Dimnent Memorial Chapel at 8 p.m. on Monday, March 6. The choir's appearance was sponsored by the Jewish Centennial Committee of Muskegon in cooperation with the Hope College Music Department.

Because half of the choir had been delayed in La Guardia International Airport in New York and was not expected to a r r i v e in Holland from Muskegon until the choir's intermission, the first half of the program was devoted to music that could be sung effectively by a c h a m b e r choir of about eighteen m e m b e r s . The first three pieces of the program were madrigal-like hymns, nicely arranged and pleasant to listen to. Italian Renaissance and

B a r o q u e m u s i c i a n Solomone Rossi, the composer of the chorale-like "Keter Yitnu L a c h , " was noted by Sperber to have written and published the first sacred pieces in Hebrew in the late sixteenth and early seventeeth centuries Arrangements of Hebrew folk tunes dominated the first half of the concert, but the choir also pulled from their repertoire two N e g r o s p i r i t u a l s , 4 , L i v e AHumble" and ''Ain't that Good News," a s well as a beautiful, innovative a r r a n g e m e n t by Alice P a r k e r of the Irish folk melody "Johnny I Hardly Know Y e . " Although a slight Middle-eastern accent s e e m e d to color the English lyrics of these pieces, they were presented by the choir with obvious enthusiasm and appreciation for these other folk traditions.

With almost the full choir present for the second half of the concert, Sperber chose to perform some of the heavier works

on the program. An a r r a n g m e n t of P s a l m 67 ( " M a y God Be Gracious to Us and Bless U s " ) , by twentieth-century American composer Charles Ives, was the most interesting piece beginning in two different keys for the men and the women, moving into a canon that was passed among the voices, and concluding in a chorale resolution. The piece was not p r e t t y , but it provided fascinating dissonances and an unusual, stirring presentation of the famous text.

Canadian Aharon Charlap was the composer of the other m a j o r work on the second half of the p r o g r a m , " T h e S a c r i f i c e of I s a a c . " This contemporary setting of the story from Genesis 22 was the most d r a m a t i c of all the pieces presented that night. Using a rhythmic bass recitative to r e p r e s e n t the voice of God demanding Isaac's sacrifice and reaching its climax in a sopranotenor duet describing the moment that Isaac was on the a l t a r ,

Sperber was remarkably relaxed conductor, wearing a suit while the rest of the m e n were in tuxedos, and talking freely with the audience to give them information about the music that was not available from the prog r a m . His rapport with the choir seemed easy, p e r h a p s a little too e a s y , b e c a u s e s e v e r a l choir m e m b e r s spent m o r e time looking at the audience than at him and many of them swayed a s they sang, movement I found distracting. However, this apparent lack of control did not reflect itself in the m u s i c ' s presentation, which was generally accurate and dynamically expressive.

Although most of the music p e r f o r m e d c a m e out of the Hebrew tradition, it was of such a variety of periods and subjects, and interspersed with a selection of other nations' music, that the

program never got tedious. The only pieces that I did not enjoy were the three Love Songs from " S p a n i s h e s L i e d e r s p i e l " by Robert Schumann. P e r h a p s I have gotten too accustomed to hearing S c h u m a n n ' s a r t songs scored for solo voice and piano, but I found these songs unsuited to this large ensemble.

Overall, the choir gave an ex cellent p e r f o r m a n c e of music that is rarely, if ever, heard by most concert-goers. With very few flaws and m a n y lovely moments, the concert was a pleas a n t a m a l g a m a t i o n of t h e familiar and the unusual. Hearing both classical and contemporary Hebrew music reminds us of a whole other musical tradition of which we a r e pitifully ignorant; the presence of both Hebrew and Western music on the p r o g r a m exemplifies the ideal that music is a m e a n s by which all people, regardless of nationality or religion, a r e d r a w n together.

"They put a lot of emphasis on heads and eyes." Brooks described how, in J a v a n e s e c o u r t dances, the dancer would focus at the foot of the audience. This shows reverence to the viewer who, in the case of court dances, was royalty. One always had to lower oneself before royalty, elders, even older siblings in the J a v a n e s e culture.

In p r e p a r a t i o n l o r t h e s e m e s t e r , Brooks s p e n t t n e preceding s u m m e r months in Hawaii, studying the language. " G r a m m a t i c a l l y , the language was not difficult," Brooks explained, "only memorizing the pronunciations."

Brooks traveled throughout J a v a and Bali, observing the landscape and customs. " I t ' s so green; it's so beautiful!" she said.

Now she is continuing to work with J a v a n e s e dance. "I a m going to the University of Michigan for one week on a Picas scholarship. I'll be working with anthropologists who have studied in Indonesia. Together we'll m a k e an educational video for g r a d e s K-12."

Brooks hopes to get a doctorate degree from New York University in international folk dance.

Afterwards, she plans on post graduate work in Egypt.

Black Coalition holds fashion show

by Mpine Qakisa anchor staff w r i t e r "Stepping Out: F r o m Africa to A m e r i c a " was the title of the first annual fashion show sponsored by the Black Coalition as part of Black History Month activities.

The fashion show, which was held in the M a a s Center on March 4, was one opportunity for students and m e m b e r s of the c o m m u n i t y to b e c o m e r e a quainted with the beautiful colors and traditions of African dress, according to Alfredo Gonzales, Dean for Multicultural Life at Hope College. The fashion show, which s t a r t e d with the traditional African wedding scene was a way for black Americans to recognize their African roots.

HOLLAND - Pianist Yuval F i c h m a n will be featured in concert by the Hope College Great P e r f o r m a n c e Series on Thursday, March 9 at 8 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel on the Hope campus.

Winner of the 1986 Young Concert Artists International auditions. F i c h m a n will present a p r o g r a m dominated by the works of Frederic Chopin. Included in the repertoire will be Chopin's Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 35, Preludes. Op. 28, and Ballade in F Minor. Op. 52. He will also perform Mozart's Sonata in A Major, K. 331 and Sonata in D minor, Op. 31, No. 2 by Ludwig Van Beethoven.

A recent Detroit F r e e P r e s s review noted that ' F i c h m a n gave off sparks of genuine fire Equipped with an impressive technique, he displayed great range, combining r e a s o n a n c e a n d p o w e r with s u r p r i s i n g delicacy."

of their 1982 Young Artists Competition, reengaged in 1983, and as soloist on the Symphony 's 50th Anniversary tour in Europe in 1984. He has also a p p e a r e d as soloist with the Toronto, Quebec, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Tallahassee Symphonies, and the M i n n e a p o l i s C h a m b e r Orchestra. In 1985 the Vancouver Symphony chose F i c h m a n as soloist for its tour of J a p a n under conductor Kazuyoshi Akiyama.

A highly regarded c h a m b e r m u s i c i a n , F i c h m a n won the c h a m b e r music prize of the Gina Bachauer competition in 1984. He also won second prize in the 1988 P a l m Beach invitational piano competition.

F i c h m a n was born in Tel-Aviv, Israel. At the age of two he moved to Toronto, Canada with his family. He studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and has also worked with Fanny W a t e r m a n in Leeds, England.

All music groups to perform Joined in concert for the first time, nearly every Hope College student musical group will participate in Musical Showcase, and event scheduled for 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5 in DeVos Hall in G r a n d Rapids.

"This is the first t i m e we've ever tried to do anything involving this m a n y s t u d e n t s , " said Professor Robert Ritsema, c h a i r m a n of the college's music d e p a r t m e n t . " B y a n d l a r g e , all of our m a j o r p e r f o r m i n g groups will be a p p e a r i n g on t h e s a m e program.

Scheduled to be slightly less than two hours in duration, the event will f e a t u r e a n u m b e r of d i f f e r e n t types of musical pieces.

The visual e l e m e n t s w e r e aesthetically pleasing and used in the film to illustrate just how well these people lived (and how much they took it for g r a n t e d ) .

T h e musical s c o r e w a s a mixture of fast-paced concertos and slower, emotional operatic pieces. The m u s i c w a s a sheer delight to listen to a n d helped move along the film, which consisted mainly of conversation.

My only criticism of the film was n a m e s of c h a r a c t e r s w e r e h a r d to keep s t r a i g h t with their faces. I found myself getting confused because t h e r e w e r e so m a n y c h a r a c t e r s involved in the sub-plots.

Overall, the film was a p l e a s u r e to watch. If y o u ' r e up for a " n a s t y , " " d e c a d e n t " evening of fun, 1 r e c o m m e n d this film.

Sports Russell to swim in seven differnt events at Nationals

by Scott A. Kaukonen anchor staff writer Shelly Russell is disappointed that a f t e r four y e a r s of collegiate swimming, it is nearly time to quit. But the senior nursing major from Battle Creek (Lakeview High School) should not expect too many s y m p a t h y c a r d s from opposing coaches and swimmers. After all, everyone gets tired of losing, and with Russell around, the competition hasn't done much else.

The n u m b e r s s p e a k for t h e m s e l v e s . T h i s y e a r , she became the first f e m a l e in the MIAA Championships meet to win an event four consecutive years, and she did it in three events. She holds school records in eight events, league records in seven. She h a s been an NCAA Division III All-American sixteen times, a national champion five times. This coming weekend, she will be competing in seven events at Nationals, defending her titles in her three individual events a s well a s her role as last y e a r ' s F e m a l e Swimm e r of the Y e a r .

Russell leads a Dutch t e a m that is excited and anxious to improve on last y e a r ' s fifth-place finish. She is hopeful that the Dutch c a n a t least equal last y e a r ' s p e r f o r m a n c e and points to the relays a s the key. That is where the points a r e found and Hope has qualified in four relays.

Personally, Russell, with a " n o t h i n g - t o - l o s e " a t t i t u d e , is psyched to hit the w a t e r and see just how fast she can go. Despite a heavier worklord in training as compared to last y e a r , she is feeling better and s w i m m i n g just as well - not exactly encouraging

At Nationals. Russell will swim one individual event and one relay per day (preliminaries and finals). Concentration - what Russell considers the toughest aspect of swimming -- will be a key, as will be ensuring that she switches from her lycra suit to her paper suit between prelims and finals. Of course, deciding when to shave her legs could be another key factor -- oh, the idiosyncrasies of s w i m m e r s .

A self-motivated individual, Russell must love the sport as she spends four to four-and-ahalf hours per day during the week in the pool, in addition to another hour or two on Saturday.

Sunday is her day off. After all, this is Holland.

Russell's swim success has not been limited to the pool. She has also won in open w a t e r competitions where she has defeated everyone including the men.

It hasn't always been so much fun for Russell. Numerous times she has questioned why she was doing this. In fact, she nearly quit altogether her f r e s h m a n y e a r . R u s s e l l w a s a t Ohio University, a Division I school, on scholarship. But 4 'they took the fun out of s w i m m i n g " for Russell. She t r a n f e r r e d to Hope w h e r e s h e f o u n d , not l e s s pressure, but a p r o g r a m where swimming was "not a do or die kind of thing." There have been times, too, a t Hope where she has considered walking a w a y from the pool. But she " k e e p s coming back to (her) love for swimming."

Russell first b e c a m e serious about swimming in eighth-grade - about the time she swam two legs of a four-person relay. She s w a m one leg with a cap on and one with it off. "We didn't get c a u g h t , " Russell said, recalling the incident. Of course, not many competitors have ever " c a u g h t " her, either.

B-ball caps off decade of winning seasons The decade of the 80s will go into the annals of Hope College m e n ' s basketball as the most seccessful era ever.

The 1988-89 Flying Dutchmen capped a 10-year period that will be hard to m a t c h by any small college basketball team in the nation. Over the decade (1979-80 thru 1988-89), Hope teams won 77 percent of their games (186-57) while claiming seven Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championships and never finishing below second place.

The Flying Dutchmen also competed in the NCAA Division III playoffs seven times during the decade.

The 1988-89 Flying Dutchmen finished with a 19-5 record and ended 9-3 against MIAA opponents. Hope was eliminated in the first round of the NCAA playoffs, bowing on a last-second basket to Allegheny, PA., 71-69, in Meadville, PA. It m a r k e d the second straight year that Hope has been eliminated f r o m the playoffs on the last play of the game. In 1988 Ohio Wesleyan, which went on to win the national championship, beat the Dutchmen 110-107 on a threr-point basket at the buzzer at thr end of the second overtime.

This has also been a milestone season for coach Glenn Van Wieren. In his 12th season. Van Wieren recorded his 200th c a r e e r victory (202-84), his 100th against MIAA opponents (108-36) and his 100th at home (103-21). Hope's first victory on the road next season will be Van Wieren's 100th (99-63) away f r o m Holland.

Hope will open its 1989-90 season the weekend of Nov. 17-18 in a t o u r n a m e n t a t Capital Universtity in Columbus, Ohio.

Elliott named to all-district Division III second team HOLLAND - Hope College sophomore E r i c Elliott of Hudsonville has been voted to the Great Lakes all-district Division III second t e a m by the National A s s o c i a t i o n of B a s k e t b a l l Coaches.

The all-district team is determined by a vote of NCAA Division III coaches in Indiana, M i c h i g a n , Ohio and P e n n sylvania.

The 5*10" Elliott is a starting guard on Hope's tournamentbound t e a m . This season he averaged 15.9 points p e r g a m e , shooting 56 percent f r o m the floor and 87 f r o m the f r e e throw line. He also led the Dutchmen in assists (80) and steals (68). He

records for three-point baskets (116) and three-point shooting accuracy (.464).

His 56 threepointers this season w a s also a school record. Mitchell also tied the Hope record for most varsity g a m e a p p e a r a n c e s (101) with Bill Vanderbilt, J r . (1984-88).

The 88-89 Dutchmen will go into the books a s the second highest scoring t e a m in school history a t 87.9 points per game. The record] of 89.3 ppg was set just a y e a r ago.

The t e a m ' s f r e e throw shooting accuracy (.751) was the seconq best in school history.

The record of .760 was also set in 1987-88.

Sophomore guard E r i c Elliott of Hudsonville led the t e a m in scoring (15.8 ppg) and field goalj shooting (.573) while Holman was the leader in f r e e throw accuracy (.871). Elliott w a s voted to the All-MIAA first t e a m a n d the Great Lakes Division III AllDistrict second team.

Senior center Tom Livingston of Dowagiac w a s voted to the AllMIAA second team. He led the team in rebounding (105) while averaging 9.6 points per g a m e behind a 57 percent shooting average.

Senior guard Tim Van Liere of Portage had an excellant final season, averaging 11.2 points per game. Van Liere committed only 33 turnovers while playing an a v e r a g e of 24 minutes p e r g a m e , and a v e r a g e of just 1.5 miscues a contest.

IN THE CREASE Much has happened in the last week in sports, both nationally and among Hope's own t e a m s .

Because of this, I decided not to focus on just one topic for this week's column.

Recent news is that the Tiger's Alan Trammell has signed a new $6.5 million three-year contract.

T r a m m e l l becomes the first Tiger to ever e a r n m o r e than $2 million a year. Pitcher J a c k Morris was previously the highest paid Tiger at $1.85 million a year.

The new signing will likely allow Trammell to finish his c a r e e r a s a Tiger, which is good for both parties. The signing benefits the Tigers by keeping arguably the best all-around shortstop in the g a m e a m e m b e r of the t e a m . It benefits T r a m m e l l by seemingly allowing him to end his c a r e e r a s a Tiger, which he had m a d e publicly known was his wish.

Most of all, however, the signing benefits the fans who will get to see three more y e a r s of stellar baseball f r o m T r a m m e l l .

Speaking about the Tigers, I disagree with all the predictions

that have the Tigers finishing no better than fourth. They have improved last y e a r ' s t e a m which finished only a single g a m e out of first. Besides this, the Tigers a r e probably the deepest t e a m in the American league. Considering that injuries a r e going to happen, especially with a schedule a s long as m a j o r league baseball's, their depth is very important.

It's probably the greatest, and m a y b e only, a d v a n t a g e t h e Tigers have over the rest of the league, but it's important enough that a pennant could likely be won with it. If nothing else, Sparky will have them playing as a team which has m a d e the Tigers perennial contenders.

On a subject closer to home, most of Hope's winter sports teams have finished their season, and it was an excellent season overall. None of the Hope winter sports t e a m s finished lower than second in the MIAA. The women's swim t e a m won the conference and had several members qualify for the national meet. The m e n ' s swim t e a m

finished second to Kalamazoo.

While the m e n ' s basketball t e a m finished second to Calvin, they still had a good enough overall m a r k to e a r n a bid to the NCAA tournament. Though they lost in t h e f i r s t r o u n d to Allegheny, the season was a g r e a t and successful one. The women's basketball t e a m also finished a strong second in the conference to Alma. Hope junior guard Dina Disney w a s named player of the week for the final week of t h e MIAA season.

Though they didn't receive a bid to the tournament, the women's season was likewise a very successful one. Congratulations to all m e m b e r s of winter sport t e a m s on their success this season.

Finally, Bob P r o b e r t was arrested last week attempting to smuggle about a Vi ounce of cocaine into the U.S. This is a new low for the Red Wing's troubled tough guy and will likely end his c a r e e r . Saturday, P r o b e r t was expelled f r o m the NHL, and his situation will be reviewed a f t e r legal proceedings against him a r e over. Probert f a c e s up to 20 y e a r s in prison and up to $1 million in fines. It's sad to see a player with P r o b e r t ' s potential just throw it away, but perhaps this is what Bob needs before he'll realize he has a problem.

You can say what you want about violence in hockey, but one thing you cannot fault the NHL for (unlike the NBA and NFL) is their drug policy. In the NHL, you don't get a second chance; if you're caught with drugs, you're gone. Maybe this policy has something to do with the fact that until Probert, the NHL hasn't been hurt by drug use. P e r h a p s the other pro leagues should adopt a similar policy. I'll see you next week. In the Crease.

St. Cloud State students protest against sex magazines (CPS) - A four-day sit-in convinced St. Cloud State University officials to stop selling Penthouse, Playboy and Playgirl m a g a z i n e s at the c a m p u s bookstore.

Students and faculty m e m b e r s voted to ban the sale the last week of J a n u a r y as m e m b e r s of two groups - the Women's Equality Group and Women for Social Justice - protested for four days at the c a m p u s student center s newsstand, calling the magazines degrading to women.

Similarly, the newsstand at Michigan Tech s Memorial Union s t o p p e d selling the magazines after renovations on the building were finished last fall.

The University Co-op at the University of Texas, however, r e s u m e d selling the sex

magazines in September a f t e r the co-op, fearing children and teenagers who attended various c a m p s on campus during the s u m m e r might see the publications, voted to ban them in June.

Moreover, only 14 people showed up at an October hearing to d e c i d e to s t o p s e l l i n g t h e magazines at the Umversih of Minnesota s West Bank Union In general, however, it has been a rocky year for Playboy on American campuses. Arizona State University women's groups denounced an a p p e a r a n c e by magazine model Jessica Hahn at a business school fundraiser, calling it ''especially offensive" to s t u d e n t s " w h o c o n s i d e r themselves serious scholars."

Any student is eligible to submit his or her verse.

All entries must bo original and unpublished.

Poems previously printed in student publications are acceptable.

All entries must be typed, double-spaced, on o n e side of the page only. Each p o e m must be on a separate sheet and must bear. In the upper left-hand corner, the NAME and ADDRESS of the student as w e l l as the COLLEGE attended. Put name and address on envelope also!

There are no restrictions on form or theme. Length of poems up to fourteen lines. Each poem must have a separate title.

(Avoid "Untitled"!) Small black and white illustrations welcome.

The judges' d e c i s i o n will be final. No info by phone!

Entrants s h o u l d k e e p a copy of all entries as they cannot be returned. Prize winners and all authors awarded publication will receive a gold-seal certificate ten days after the deadline.

I. P. will retain one-time publication rights for accepted poems.

Foreign language poems welcome.

There Is an Initial $3 registration fee for the first entry and a fee of one dollar for each additional poem.
