N O S T U D E N T S h a v e a s yet b e e n e x p e l l e d f r o m the C o l l e g e , a l t h o u g h the p o s s i b i l i t y ex ists t h a t s o m e s t u d e n t s will n o t b e p e r m i t t e d to r e g i s t e r next fall a n d o t h e r s m a y still be a s k e d to l e a v e this year. Dr. R i c h a r d B r o c k m e i e r felt thai " m o r e c o u n s e l i n g w a s not necess i t a t e d , but t h a t the need f o r c o u n seling w a s m a d e m o r e a p p a r e n t b y the c u r r i c u l u m r e q u i r e m e n t s . " T h e a d v a n t a g e s a n d feasibilities of i n t e r d i s c i p l i n a r y t e a c h i n g were then d e b a t e d . Dr. N o r t o n noted t h a t scientists at s u c h p r o g r a m s a s N A S A were specialists, but a d d ed that a p p l i c a n t s f o r such posit i o n s with b r e a d t h of e d u c a t i o n were f a v o r e d .

DR, T H A R I N S T A T E D t h a t the g r a d u a t e s t u d e n t w h o h a d been e d u c a t e d with a v a r i e t y of s u b j e c t s " w o u l d be less a f r a i d to e x p a n d in g r a d u a t e s c h o o l . T H E AD HOC c o m m i t t e e o n S e n i o r S e m i n a r in Religion presented its r e p o r t next. The c o m mittee p r o p o s e d t h r e e c o u r s e s a s p o s s i b l e f u l f i l l m e n t s of the s e n i o r s e m i n a r r e q u i r e m e n t s in the religion d e p a r t m e n t T h e three c o u r s e s are Christianity and C o n t e m p o r a r y Culture, Christianity a n d C o n t e m p o r a r y L i t e r a t u r e , a n d C h r i s t i a n Ethics.

D i s c u s s i o n in t h e E P C c e n t e r e d o n w h e t h e r these c o u r s e s c o u l d be t a u g h t a s s e m i n a r s r a t h e r t h a n a s lectures.

c h a p e l m u s t be m a d e . While the u l t i m a t e d e c i s i o n m u s t c o m e f r o m the B o a r d of T r u s t e e s , all e y e s a r e now t u r n e d to the B l u e R i b b o n C o m m i t t e e a p p o i n t e d to s t u d y the r e l i g i o u s life a t t h e C o l l e g e .

We a d m i t t h a t the t a s k b e f o r e it is s t a g g e r i n g . B u t if die c o m m i t t e e is to a r r i v e a t a n intelligent s o l u t i o n to t h e c h a p e l p r o b lem which the C o l l e g e c o m m u n i t y c a n accept, it m u s t c o n s i d e r all the i s s u e s a n d Implications involved. T h e committee must ask whether the loss of a p o t e n t i a l l y v a l u a b l e m e m b e r of the C o l l e g e c o m m u n i t y is w o r t h r e q u i r e d c h a p e l , a n d w h e t h e r the a i m s of the p r o g r a m c a n be a c h i e v e d in o t h e r w a y s a m e n a b l e to h i m .

O N S I D E R I N G ALL these f a c t o r s a n d m o r e is t r u l y a H e r c u l e a n t a s k o n e t h a t c a n be e x p e c t e d to t a k e a g r e a t d e a l of t i m e . But h o w t h e Blue R i b b o n Committee can honestly r e c o m m e n d action w i t h o u t l o o k i n g at t h e m is a mystery.

T o a s k t h a t these new p r o b l e m s b e exa m i n e d a n d r e s o l v e d o v e r n i g h t is a b s u r d .

Yet we m u s t a d d a w o r d f o r s p e e d , b e c a u s e t h e p r o l o n g e d d e b a t e o v e r the c h a p e l i s s u e h a s s o u r e d e v e r y o n e o n the q u e s t i o n a n d o n e a c h o t h e r . If a s o l u t i o n is not f o u n d b e f o r e the M a y m e e t i n g of the B o a r d of T r u s t e e s , t h e r e is e v i d e n c e t h a t w h a t is n o w d i s t u r b i n g will b e c o m e c a t a s t r o p h i c f o r the C o l l e g e . T h e s e d i s t u r b a n c e s t a k e t w o f o r m s.

F i r s t , d i s a g r e e m e n t o v e r w h a t is die p r o p e r c o u r s e h a s injured the sense o f c o m m u n i t y at H o p e . T h e C o l l e g e h a s in a s e n s e b e e n d i v i d e d i n t o three h o s t i l e c a m p s w h i c h n o l o n g e r listen to the o t h e r bides. If the t e n s i o n is to b e e a s e d a n d the s c h i s m h e a l e d , a d e f i n i t i v e s t a t e m e n t m u s t b e m a d e , a n d the B l u e R i b b o n C o m m i t t e e is the g r o u p to m a k e it.

E C O N D , T H E chapel controversy, while in n o sense t r i v i a l , h a s rep l a c e d die l a r g e r i s s u e s t h a t c o n f r o n t all m e n in g e n e r a l a n d c o l l e g e s t u d e n t s of t o d a y in p a r t i c u l a r . Last w e e k e n d w a s i c a s e in p o i n t T h e s y m p o s i u m , " T h e C r i s i s in O u r C i t i e s , " w a s p e r h a p s the b e s t , m o s t informative and mostchallenging program e v e r p r e s e n t e d at H o p e C o l l e g e . A n d yet F r i d a y , with a f i n e a d d r e s s b y R e p r e s e n t a tive J o h n C o n y e r s a n d p r o v o c a t i v e p a n e l d i s c u s s i o n s still to f o l l o w D i c k G r e g o r y s s p e e c h , the m a i n c o n c e r n of m a n y o n o u r c a m p u s w a s t h e p o s s i b l e s u s p e n s i o n of 9 9 s t u d e n t s — a n o u t g r o w t h of a n i s s u e t h a t h a s been debated ad infinitum, a d n a u s e u m f o r a l m o s t two years.

W h e n the i s s u e s p r e s e n t e d in t h a t s y m p o s i u m c a n be p u s h e d into t h e b a c k g r o u n d , s o m e t h i n g is w r o n g . I t ' s a b o u t t i m e t h a t w e i n v o l v e d o u r s e l v e s in s o m e t h i n g m o r e m e a n i n g f u l a n d significant t h a n c o m p u l s o r y c h a p e l . I n M a y , it will be p a s s e d time.

B u t the M a y d e a d l i n e is f a r a w a y . T h e p r e s e n t s i t u a t i o n calls f o r a n e x a n i i n a t i o n of t h e c h a p e l p r o b l e m f r o m all v i e w p o i n t s , i n c l u d i n g all its r a m i f i c a t i o n s . T h e d i l e n i n i a n e e d s r e s o l u t i o n , but r e s o l u t i o n t h a t h a s t a k e n into a c c o u n t all the f a c t s . T h i s is t h e t a s k of the B l u e R i b b o n C o m m i t t e e .

I F I R S T W A N T to s p e a k t o the a n c h o r article of last week. If I were a t y p i c a l s t u d e n t o n c a m p u s , r e a d i n g the article a b o u t t h e C h a p e l B o a r d , I w o u l d be conv i n c e d t h a t o n e T i m D y k s t r a w a s s o m e sort of bigot w h o got a s a d i s t i c thrill out of b o t h s u p e r s e d i n g the p o w e r s of the f a c u l t y m e m b e r s of the C h a p e l B o a r d p l u s the D e a n of S t u d e n t s , a n d of s u s p e n d i n g his fellow s t u d e n t s to p r o v e a petty point.

I a s s e r t h e r e t h a t t h i s is a g r o s s l y incorrect p r e s e n t a t i o n of b o t h myself pers o n a l l y a n d of the C h a p e l B o a r d . Let m e e x p l a i n m y feelings in this case. As a result of the C h a p e l B o a r d d e c i s i o n of l a s t w e e k , I felt a p o i n t h a d b e e n r e a c h e d w h e r e the C o l l e g e m u s t either s u s p e n d 9 9 s t u d e n t s , o r it m u s t a d m i t t h a t c o m p u l s o r y c h a p e l is a c t u a l l y n o t e n f o r c e a b l e t o a n y significant degree.

BEING EXTREMELY realistic, I felt a n y d i s c i p l i n a r y a c t i o n at this p o i n t , o t h e r than suspension, was merely an admission of d e f e a t o n the p a r t of the C h a p e l B o a r d a n d the A d m i n i s t r a t i o n . A n a b s u r d a r g u m e n t , i.e. c o m p u l s o r y c h a p e l , h a d , in m y o p i n i o n , b e e n f o r c e d t o its o w n l o g i c a l conclusion.

The Elevator Affair President L y n d o n J o h n s o n h a d o n e of his better d a y s last T h u r s d a y . He w a s stuck in a n e l e v a t o r in the P e n t a g o n f o r 12 m i n u t e s a n d f i n a l l y h a d to c r a w l u p a n d o u t with r e t i r i n g S e c r e t a r y of Defense R o b e r t M c N a m a r a . O r d i n a r i l y , this c o u l d h a v e b e e n a v e r y e m b a r a s s i n g s i t u a t i o n f o r the C o m m a n d e r - i n - c h i e f , but, fortunately, a c o n t i n g e n c y p l a n h a d been w o r k e d o u t f o r just s u c h a n o c c a s i o n .

A S S O O N AS it w a s a n n o u n c e d t h a t the President h a d b e e n stuck in the elevator, a While H o u s e b a c k g r o u n d p r e s s briefing w a s called. Walt R o s t o w , the P r e s i d e n t ' s aide, told r e p o r t e r s t h a t the President h a d been p l a n n i n g f o r s o m e time to get stuck in a P e n t a g o n e l e v a t o r , a n d it c a m e a s n o s u r p r i s e to a n y o n e in the g o v e r n m e n t that it h a d h a p p e n e d at this time. " T h e fact t h a t the President w a s o n l y stuck for 12 m i n u t e s is proof t h a t the f a u l t y e l e v a t o r failed to a c c o m p l i s h its m i s s i o n . We c o n s i d e r this the d e a t h rattle f o r all the e l e v a t o r s in the P e n t a g o n . " At the v e r y m o m e n t that R o s t o w w a s h o l d i n g his b a c k g r o u n d e r . D e a n R u s k w a s b e i n g q u e s t i o n e d a b o u t the e l e v a t o r at a p r e s s c o n f e r e n c e at the State D e p a r t m e n t .

He s a i d : " I N S T E A D OF Y O U r e p o r t e r s writing a b o u t o n e b a d e l e v a t o r t h a t went w r o n g , w h y d o n ' t y o u write a b o u t all the o t h e r e l e v a t o r s t h a t w e r e w o r k i n g at t h a t t i m e ? Why d o n ' t y o u p r i n t s o m e t h i n g g o o d about American elevators for a change, r a t h e r t h a n a l w a y s p o i n t i n g out w h a t ' s w r o n g with t h e m ? " A r e p o r t e r s a i d the fact t h a t the Presid(3fit's e l e v a t o r w a s n ' t w o r k i n g w a s news; the f a c t t h a t the o t h e r e l e v a t o r s were w o r k ing w a s n ' t news.

F l u s h e d , R u s k t u r n e d to the r e p o r t e r a n d s a i d , " W h o s e side a r e y o u o n ? " G e n . E a r l e Wheeler, c h a i r m a n of the J o i n t Chiefs of Staff, s a i d t h a t m o r e t r o o p s w o u l d h a v e to be p r o v i d e d f o r the elev a t o r s and he s a i d the m i l i t a r y l e a d e r s a d v o c a t e d the c a l l i n g u p of all e l e v a t o r reserves.

T o m y m i n d , there w a s n o q u e s t i o n at all if o n e w a s forced to c h o o s e b e t w e e n a n u n w a n t e d i n s t i t u t i o n a n d m e m b e r s of the s t u d e n t b o d y . Last w e e k ' s a n c h o r edit o r i a l v o i c e d perfectly m y p e r s o n a l senti m e n t s w h e n it s a i d , " T h e c h a p e l r e q u i r e m e n t is s i m p l y not w o r t h t h r o w i n g e v e n o n e s t u d e n t o u t of c o l l e g e . " A S T H E P E R S O N w h o a l o n e b o r e the b u r d e n of a n u n f a i r a n d out-of-context a n c h o r article, I e x p r e s s m y deep d i s a p p o i n t m e n t in the w a y the s t o r y w a s h a n d led. F o r the s a k e of a n e x c i t i n g s t o r y , the c o n t r o v e r s i a l u n n e c e s s a r i l y b e c a m e the sensational, and at m y p e r s o n a l e x p e n s e .

H o w e v e r , the p u r p o s e of this letter is not to e v a l u a t e a n c h o r j o u r n a l i s t i c p o l i c y .

E v e n after m y p e r s o n a l m o t i v e s h a v e been recognized, the q u e s t i o n a r i s e s , " W e r e n ' t y o u g a m b l i n g at pretty h i g h s t a k e s , a n d with other p e o p l e ' s m o n e y , t o b r i n g all this a b o u t ? " I d o n ' t t h i n k s o .

B e i n g i n close c o n t a c t with t h e D e a n a n d the o t h e r C h a p e l B o a r d m e m b e r s , I d i d n o t a n d d o not believe t h a t 9 9 s t u d e n t s w o u l d o r will b e s u s p e n d e d . If I h a d h a d e v e n the slightest s u s p i c i o n t h a t this w a s a possibility, m y actions would h a v e been c o n s i d e r a b l y different, I a s s u r e y o u .

D u r i n g the w a i t , the P r e s i d e n t t u r n e d to S e c r e t a r y M c N a m a r a a n d s a i d : "Well, B o b , w h a t the h— h a p p e n e d n o w ? T h u s , t h e r e is n o o p p o r t u n i t y t o develop sustained characterization or extended dialogue.

T h e e m p h a s i s in this d r a m a t i c d o c u m e n t a r y is o n the u t i l i z a t i o n of e a c h scene t o w a r d a d u a l p u r p o s e : the d o c u m e n t a t i o n of the m i s t r e a t m e n t of the N e g r o , a n d the e n l i s t m e n t of m o r a l a n d political s u p p o r t f o r his f u r t h e r d r i v e toward complete equality. The u s u a l criteria for j u d g i n g a p l a y h a v e b e e n s u s p e n d e d ; the u l t i m a t e c r i t e r i o n is h o w well e a c h a c t o r a n d e a c h scene c o n t r i b u t e to the m o r a l l e s s o n the p l a y teaches.

T H I S R E V I E V \ f c K a t t e n d e d the d r e s s r e h e a r s a l o f " In White A m e r i c a , " which w a s s o m e w h a t m o r e relaxed than regular performa n c e s d o u b t l e s s will be. T h e l a c k of a n a u d i e n c e to p r o v i d e r e s p o n s e f o r the a c t o r s w a s a distinct disa d v a n t a g e , a n d m a d e the perf o r m a n c e I a t t e n d e d a t y p i c a l in this respect.

Nonetheless, that p e r f o r m a n c e w a s sufficiently s i m i l a r to the o n e s y o u will b e a t t e n d i n g to m a k e these c o m m e n t s at least p a r t i a l l y valid.

I N A F E W c a s e s this w a s succ e s s f u l l y a c c o m p l i s h e d : B o b Eckr i c h ' s S o u t h e r n a c c e n t , u s e d in Ben T i l l m a n ' s speech b e f o r e the U.S. Senate, w a s m o s t effective. B o b K i e f t ' s v e r y N o r t h e r n s p e e c h pattern w a s less s u i t a b l e f o r S o u t h e r n accents. D o l o r e s F l o y d h a n d l e d the broad p a t t e r n ot p o o r l y educated Negro Sojourner Truth to g r e a t effect, b u t D i a n e P a r k e r ' s S o u t h e r n l a d y s o u n d e d precisely like a N o r t h e r n e r a t t e m p t i n g imitation.

E x c e p t for Miss F l o y d , the m o s t n o t i c e a b l e w e a k n e s s of the cast l a y in t o o r a p i d d e l i v e r y of lines.

F o r example, Milton Trotter's s p e e c h in the role of W . E . B . Dub o i s w o u l d h a v e been n e a r l y incomprehensible h a d 1 not had a script with me: w h o l e s y l l a b l e s were d r o p p e d , a n d " c i v i c r i g h t s " c a m e o u t "civil r i g h t s . Orchestra Concert 'Satisfying;' New Sound 'Vibrates' Chapel Editor's Note: The f o l l o w i n g is a critique of the orchestra recital T u e s d a y night, written b y j u n i o r Scot Cutting.

By Scot Cutting Last T u e s d a y evening, Dimnent M e m o r i a l C h a p e l v i b r a t e d with the new s o u n d of the H o p e C o l l e g e O r c h e s t r a . U n d e r the b a t o n of R o b e r t R i t s e m a , the e n s e m b l e ' s new c o n d u c t o r , t h e o r c h e s t r a g a v e a v e r y s a t i s f y i n g c o n c e r t consisti n g of w o r k s b y H a y d e n , R i e g g e r Delius a n d Berlioz.

T H O U G H T H E audience was n o t l a r g e , it g r e a t l y a p p r e c i a t e d Haydn's "Military" Symphony.

T h e r e were a few p r o b l e m s with a t t a c k s a n d e n t r a n c e s in t h e o p e n i n g A d a g i o a n d a v a g u e sense of i m p r e c i s i o n in v a r i o u s s p o t s t h r o u g h o u t the w h o l e w o r k which often d e t r a c t e d f r o m the w o r k ' s inert c h a r m a n d a p p e a l . H o w e v e r , the p e r f o r m a n c e a s a w h o l e w a s q u i t e p o s s i b l y the o r c h e s t r a ' s best r e n d i t i o n of a n y l a r g e classical w o r k w i t h i n t h e l a s t f o u r y e a r s .

Wellingford Riegger's " D a n c e Rhythms for Orchestra" provided a n excellent e n t r a n c e i n t o the sec o n d half of the p r o g r a m . T h e piece w a s a m a r k e d c o n t r a s t to the H a y d n s y m p h o n y , a n d e v e n t h o u g h the c o m p l e x r h y t h m s were at times m u d d y , the p e r f o r m a n c e

e m p h a s i z e the p a r t i c u l a r i s m of the w o r k : it is i n e s c a p a b l y a reflect i o n of o u r c e n t r a l n a t i o n a l p r o blem.

P e r h a p s the s i n g l e m o s t striki n g difficulty in p r e s e n t i n g a p l a y of this n a t u r e is the conflict between dialect a n d a r t i c u l a t i o n . T h e a c t o r s a s s u m e d v a r y i n g roles, a n d in s o m e c a s e s were o b l i g e d to a d o p t a dialect p r o b a b l y quite different f r o m their n a t u r a l speech pattern.

One of the n consistent comp l a i n t s h e a r d -.'bout a t t e n d i n g H o p e College h a s been its r e l a t i v e i s o l a t i o n f r o m w h a t is h a p p e n i n g in the w o r l d . C l a i m i n g t h a t they are surrounded b y a s m o t h e r i n g c o c o o n of petty p r o v i n c i a l i s m , s o m e s t u d e n t s feel that t h e y h a v e lost all contact with the political, intellectual, a n d s o c i a l c u r r e n t s of o u r society.

P E R H A P S I T IS this s i t u a t i o n which p r o m p t e d p e o p l e to listen to Dick G r e g o r y e v e n t h o u g h m a n y knew t h a t they w o u l d b e insulted b y his l a n g u a g e a n d his p h i l o s o p h y . With a d e m o n i c cleverness disguised a s topical h u m o r , he b a c k e d his a u d i e n c e into a c o r n e r a n d t h e n p r o c e e d e d to deliver a series of swift a n d wellp l a c e d kicks i n t o the l i s t e n e r ' s g r o i n . Like m o t h s , we w e r e a t t r a c t ed b y the fire in his voice, a n d we received the a p p r o p r i a t e v e r bal scorching.
