by Gerald Swieringa T h e s e a r c h f o r a p r e s i d e n t of Hope College c o n t i n u e s with the Presidential Search Committee h o p i n g t o p r e s e n t a list of five or six names to the Board of T r u s t e e s at its May 6 m e e t i n g .

ACCORDING T O Dr. Paul F r i e d , c h a i r m a n of t h e h i s t o r y department and f a c u l t y repres e n t a t i v e o n t h e PSC. t h e r e has not b e e n a full m e e t i n g of t h e PSC since J a n u a r y , b u t t h e c o m m i t t e e has m e t in t w o partial s e s s i o n s since t h a t t i m e . " W e ' v e a p p r o a c h e d m o s t of t h e 14 p e o p l e o n t h e original list a n d received a d e f i n i t e ' n o ' f r o m six of t h e m , " Fried stated. He a d d e d h o w e v e r , t h a t n a m e s are still b e i n g a c c e p t e d at this t i m e .

"WE DEFINITELY want s o m e o n e with e x p e r i e n c e , " Fried a s s e r t e d . He a d d e d t h a t t h e best guide to a c a n d i d a t e ' s f u t u r e p r o g r a m is an e x a m i n a t i o n of his past p r o g r a m .

T o aid in t h e a s s e s s m e n t of t h a t past p r o g r a m , Fried s u g g e s t e d that t h e s t u d e n t representatives o n the P S C m a y i n q u i r e i n t o t h e c a n d i d a t e ' s p r e v i o u s h a n d l i n g of s t u d e n t issues as revealed by t h e s t u d e n t p u b l i c a t i o n s of his pre-

vious school. When the c a n d i d a t e arrives on c a m p u s t h e n , he will b e c o n f r o n t e d w i t h not o n l y his f u t u r e p l a n s , but his p r e v i o u s e x p e r i e n c e as well. F r i e d s t a t e d .

FRIED ACKNOWLEDGED that the c o m m i t t e e was having s o m e d i f f i c u l t i e s in a p p r o a c h i n g c a n d i d a t e s d u e t o the l a t e n e s s of t h e a c a d e m i c year. D R . L E S L I E B e a c h , c o m m i t lee c h a i r m a n and c h a i r m a n ol t h e psychology department, explained early in t h e m e e t i n g t h a t t h e committee's purpose was " t o develop general policy guidelines" for Hope's minority students program. " T h e college s i m p l y had no p o l i c y g u i d e l i n e s , " he said. He a d d e d that t h e c o m m i t t e e was also to p r o v i d e s p e c i f i c suggest i o n s o n the issue ol m i n o r i t y students.

Dr. C h a r l e s Hut tar, a s s o c i a t e p r o f e s s o r ot I nglish, e x p r e s s e d d i s a p p o i n t ment with the fact that the report summary contains no statement o n t h e p r o b l e m of e d u c a t i n g t h e w h i t e m a j o r i t y at H o p e . " T h e p r o b l e m deserves explicit m e n t i o n t h e r e a n d e x p l i c i t a t t e n t i o n in the m o n t h s a h e a d , " he c o m m e n t e d .

S t u d e n t Derryl Stewart answered t h a t the c o m m i t t e e h a d decided t h a t t h e p r o b l e m of c h a n g ing t h e a t t i t u d e s of t h e w h i t e m a j o r i t y " w a s n ' t what we were asked to direct our a t t e n t i o n toward."

He e x p l a i n e d that "it is clearly the e x p e c t a t i o n " f o r colleges now to g r a d u a t e minority s t u d e n t s who can succeed m dilTicult s p e c i a l i z e d fields. Dennis Farmer, a seminary s t u d e n t d o i n g i n t e r n s h i p w o r k in t h e a c a d e m i c a f f a i r s o f f i c e , reported enrollment statistics for Hope minority students during t h e m e e t i n g . ACP all-ameriean honor awarded to Hope 'anchor' The Hope College anchor, u n d e r t h e e d i t o r s h i p of T h o m a s Donia, has b e e n awarded an A l l - A m e r i c a n r a t i n g f o r t h e first s e m e s t e r p u b l i c a t i o n s b y t h e Ass o c i a t e d Collegiate Press.

T h e anchor received " M a r k s of D i s t i n c t i o n " f o r its c o n t e n t a n d c o v e r a g e , w r i t i n g and editing, physical appearance and photography. The Ail-American rating r e p r e s e n t s the h i g h e s t level of a c h i e v e m e n t r e c o g n i z e d by t h e ACP. The Hope publication was j u d g e d in c o m p a r i s o n w i t h c o l l e g e n e w s p a p e r s p r o d u c e d in s c h o o l s of a p p r o x i m a t e l y the s a m e e n r o l l m e n t , e m p l o y i n g similar o f f - s e t printing m e t h o d s and publishing o n a w e e k l y basis.

In o r d e r to b e eligible f o r an A i l - A m e r i c a n rating, a n e w s p a p e r m u s t have received a first class r a t i n g a n d b e e n a w a r d e d m a r k s of d i s t i n c t i o n in at least f o u r of t h e five c a t e g o r i e s j u d g e d . receives Milliken's age recommendations

Milliken recommended t o the Michigan S t a t e Legislature Wednesday that " t h e age of t h e m a j o r i t y be r e d u c e d to 18 f o r all purposes."

The recommendation is an e n d o r s e m e n t of t h e r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s m a d e by t h e " C o m m i s s i o n o n t h e Age of t h e M a j o r i t y " in a s p e c i a l s t u d y of laws, a d m i n i s t r a tive regulations, inconsistencies and i n a d e q u a c i e s in t h e s t a t e ' s present m a j o r i t y policy.

In his r e c o m m e n d a t i o n , Milliken endorsed the c o m m i t t e e ' s s u g g e s t i o n s t h a t 18-year-olds " b e permitted and r e q u i r e d t o be parties t o litigation w i t h o u t a g u a r d i a n , be a l l o w e d t o e n t e r i n t o c o n t r a c t u a l a g r e e m e n t s , be emp o w e r e d t o m a k e their o w n wills, be f r e e f r o m all g u a r d i a n s h i p r e q u i r e m e n t s , be e m p o w e r e d t o

voluntarily submit themselves to m e n t a l i n s t i t u t i o n s for t r e a t m e n t , and be a l l o w e d t o v o t e . " The commission's most controversial s t a t e m e n t , r e c o m m e n d i n g a l o w e r i n g of the d r i n k i n g age t o 18, also received t h e g o v e r n o r ' s e n d o r s e m e n t . Milliken s t a t e d , "I have given this r e c o m mendation careful study and t h o u g h t a n d 1 ha ve c o n c l u d e d if all y o u n g a d u l t s are t o be c h a r g e d w i t h t h e full r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s of a d u l t h o o d , t h e y s h o u l d be accorded the full privileges of adults."

SORORITY B I D S w e r e acc e p t e d M a r c h 14, y i e l d i n g 8 0 n e w members. Fraternity acceptances were d u e last T h u r s d a y . T h e y gained 121 m e n . Last y e a r at this t i m e , t h e s o r o r i t i e s a c c e p t e d 105 p l e d g e s and t h e f r a t e r n i t i e s t o o k in 1 14.

Although the s o r o r i t i e s acc e p t e d f e w e r m e m b e r s t h a n last year, C o r i n n e Havinga, president of P a n - H e l l , felt t h a t this did n o t i n d i c a t e a d e c l i n e of interest in s o r o r i t i e s since 139 girls r u s h e d last y e a r a n d 133 girls p a r t i c i p a t e d again this y e a r . S h e c i t e d a s m a l l e r n u m b e r of s o r o r i t y o p e n i n g s a n d the d e m i s e of o n e s o r o r i t y as r e a s o n s f o r t h e d e c r e a s e in s o r o r ity p l e d g e s this y e a r .

N A N C Y Sonneveldt, Delta Phi a l u m n a a n d p r e s e n t P a n - H e l l a d v i s o r c o m m e n t e d , "I feel t h a t c o l l e c t i v e l y , t h e p o s i t i o n of t h e s o r o r i t i e s o n H o p e ' s c a m p u s is a b o u t t h e s a m e as it's a l w a y s b e e n , h o w e v e r t h e o p p o s i t i o n has b e c o m e s t r o n g e r a n d m o r e vocal.

She a d d e d , ' T h i s y e a r w e did see several girls d r o p p i n g o u t of r u s h .

S o m e were d i s c o u r a g e d b y t h e large . n u m b e r rushing. T h e r e was also q u i t e a bit of c r o s s - b i d d i n g . " B o b S c o t t , p r e s i d e n t of t h e I n t e r - F r a t e r n i t y C o u n c i l , felt t h a t t h e r e w a s m o r e i n t e r e s t in f r a t e r nity r u s h t h a n t h e r e h a d b e e n in p r e v i o u s y e a r s . " W i t h 121 new pledges, the f r a t s c e r t a i n l y d o n ' t seem t o b e d y i n g o u t , p a r t i c u l a r l y the larger, s t r o n g e r f r a t e r n i t i e s . S h e pointed out that presently there was less p r e s s u r e b e i n g p u t o n girls t o j o i n s o r o r i t i e s . " I f a n y t h i n g , it's a p r e s s u r e n o t t o j o i n . I feel this is healthier because the people w h o are p l e d g i n g are d o i n g so b e c a u s e they want t o . " Dean of students Jeanette Sprik n o t e d t h a t a g r e a t e r e m p h a sis o n i n d i v i d u a l i s m s e e m e d t o be against t h e G r e e k m o v e m e n t . S h e said s o m e p e o p l e might c o n s i d e r a sorority or a fraternity limiting.

KNICKERBOCKER Mark R o b e r t s also saw this h a p p e n i n g but felt it was a m i s c o n c e p t i o n .

H e said, " T h e g e n e r a l w a y of t h i n k i n g h a s c h a n g e d . With m o r e stress on individualism many p e o p l e t h i n k a n y k i n d of g r o u p m e m b e r s h i p will h a m p e r t h e m . If a n y t h i n g , w i t h all t h e r e s t r i c t i o n s placed o n t h e s t u d e n t s h e r e , a f r a t is t h e o n e place a p e r s o n can feel s e c u r e e n o u g h t o really be an i n d i v i d u a l a n d n o t be a f r a i d t o express himself."

A c c o r d i n g t o Miss S p r i k , each s o r o r i t y m u s t e x a m i n e and c l a r i f y its goals, t h e p u r p o s e it serves f o r its m e m b e r s a n d its role o n t h e c a m p u s as a w h o l e . A s s o c i a t e d e a n of s t u d e n t s Michael G e r r i e c o n c u r red, stating, " T h e frats need to s t a n d b a c k a n d t a k e a very h o n e s t , c a n d i d l o o k at their a c c o m p l i s h m e n t s or lack of t h e m a n d t h e n decide on a definite c o u r s e . "

MISS SONNEVELDT felt t h e r e w a s very little d i f f e r e n c e in t h e f u n c t i o n of s o r o r i t i e s f r o m t h e t i m e of h e r i n v o l v e m e n t as a m e m b e r u n t i l n o w as an a d v i s o r .

S h e r e g a r d e d t h e s o r o r i t i e s as an answer to a s t u d e n t ' s need to b e l o n g . Miss S p r i k a c k n o w l e d g e d , " A s o r o r i t y can be a s p r i n g b o a r d for personal g r o w t h by providing a s e c u r e base f o r d e v e l o p m e n t . " She cautioned, however, "These s t r e n g t h s can b e c o m e w e a k n e s s e s

F R A T E R S FROLICKING—Chuck Cousineau plays a peculiar Greek i n s t r u m e n t while J o h n K l e i n p r o v i d e s lyrical a c c o m p a n i m e n t . T h i s y e a r ' s s t r o n g r u s h h a s i n s u r e d t h a t s u c h b r o t h e r l y c a p e r s will n o t b e c o m e e x t i n c t in t h e f o r e s e e a b l e f u t u r e . if t h e individual a l l o w s the s o r o r ity t o b e c o m e a l l - i m p o r t a n t in itself r a t h e r t h a n an o p p o r t u n i t y for further g r o w t h . " G E R R I E S A I D he feels t h a t in t h e past, f r a t e r n i t y m e m b e r s h i p w a s an essential k i n d of b e l o n g i n g .

He added t h a t t h e value of f r a t e r n i t i e s to t h o s e i n d i v i d u a l s w h o c h o o s e t o j o i n is still valid as t h e y p r o v i d e an a f f i l i a t i o n w h i c h many students need.

Most of t h e f r a t e r n i t y a n d sorority members interviewed a g r e e d t h a t t h e p u r p o s e of t h e i r o r g a n i z a t i o n s was p r i m a r i l y social f o r their m e m b e r s . K a p p a C h i m e m b e r Carrie Krahe c o m m e n t e d , " S o r o r i t y is f o r its m e m b e r s f i r s t .

A f t e r all, i t ' s n o t a p u b l i c t h i n g . It p r o v i d e s a bit of social c o n t a c t with other people and keeps y o u r s c h o o l life r o u n d e d . T h e s o r o r i t y also p r o v i d e s t h e m e a n s of o r g a n i zation for group activities." An A r k i e active a d d e d , " I t ' s c o m m o n k n o w l e d g e t h a t a f r a t is a social c l u b , but it also p r e s e n t s a c h a l l e n g e f o r g u y s t o get t o k n o w a n d w o r k w i t h a m u c h larger group than they would probably encounter otherwise."

SIGMA SIGMA member Dawn V o l l i n k s t a t e d t h a t she j o i n e d a s o r o r i t y f o r s e c u r i t y and social a c t i v i t y . " O t h e r t y p e s of c l u b s h e r e have a m o r e s e r i o u s p u r p o s e so they do not have m u c h o p p o r t u n i t y f o r s o c i a l i z i n g , " she added.

Gerrie criticized the G r e e k community for not extending m o r e of t h e i r activities t o t h e c a m p u s as a w h o l e , h e l p i n g t o p r o v i d e a larger social o p p o r t u n i t y o n t h e c a m p u s . He cited t h e f r a t e r Irolics and t h e MC-5 c o n c e r t sponsored by the K n i c k s as e x a m p l e s of activities the f r a t e r n i t i e s and s o r o r i t i e s c o u l d d o f o r the whole c a m p u s . F a r m e r said t h a t of t h e 2 2 black s t u d e n t s t h a t left H o p e d u r i n g t h e five-year p e r i o d , n i n e left b e c a u s e of a c a d e m i c p r o b lems, n i n e t r a n s f e r r e d and t h e r e m a i n d e r left f o r p e r s o n a l reasons.

He interpreted this as i n d i c a t i n g t h a t black s t u d e n t s at Hope do not show a disproport i o n a t e a m o u n t of d i f f i c u l t y in academic achievement.

Dr. David Myers, a s s o c i a t e p r o f e s s o r of p s y c h o l o g y , gave a r e p o r t o n t h e n u m b e r of b l a c k s t u d e n t s e n r o l l e d at v a r i o u s G L C A schools. T h e statistics, compiled in May 1 9 7 0 , s h o w e d t h a t H o p e is about average among GLCA s c h o o l s in this area. T h e f i g u r e s ranged f r o m nine b l a c k s t u d e n t s at W a b a s h College t h r o u g h Kalam a z o o ' s 4 6 , H o p e ' s 54 and O h i o W e s l e y a n ' s 7 0 t o O b e r l i n ' s 150.

Dr. G e r h a r d M e g o w , p r o f e s s o r of G e r m a n , e x p r e s s e d c o n c e r n that t h e d e v e l o p m e n t of special courses for minority students may lead t o " c o m p a r t m e n t a l i z e d e d u c a t i o n : black versus w h i t e versus C h i c a n o liberal a r t s . " He voiced his c o n v i c t i o n t h a t the " b e s t e d u c a t i o n f o r m i n o r i t y g r o u p s is

the best e d u c a t i o n f o r everybody."

A R E P O R T on present administration e f f o r t s to recruit minority s t u d e n t s w a s p r e s e n t e d by D e a n of S t u d e n t s R o b e r t De Y o u n g . T H E P R O G R A M has e m e r g e d f r o m m e e t i n g s t h a t i n c l u d e d adm i n i s t r a t o r s and all b l a c k s t u d e n t s o n c a m p u s , S t e w a r t i n d i c a t e d . It p r o p o s e s t h e e s t a b l i s h m e n t , over t h e n e x t t w o years, of six c o u r s e s t h a t will " p r i m a r i l y be g e n e r a t e d by the black students thems e l v e s . " H e w e n t on t o say t h a t the courses "have been outlined and d e f i n e d in a r u d i m e n t a r y w a y , l o r e x a m p l e g h e t t o e c o n o m i c s and black art a n d m u s i c . " In r e s p o n s e to a q u e s t i o n , S t e w a r t said t h a t the n e w c o u r s e s will be e s t a b l i s h e d by " t h e usual r o u t e of t h e c u r r i c u l u m c o m m i t tee a n d s o o n . " He i n d i c a t e d t h a t t h e first o n e w o u l d begin in the s p r i n g of t h e 1 9 7 1 - 7 2 a c a d e m i c year.

THE MEETING concluded a f t e r m e m b e r s of t h e H u m a n Rights Council led an open discussion on the p r o b l e m s faced b y H o p e ' s black s t u d e n t s . Most of t h e talk c e n t e r e d o n t h e d i l e m m a s t h a t b l a c k s e n c o u n t e r in classroom situations.

Roberts suggested there would be more inter-fraternity co-operation simply for survival.

Poli. sci. adds new program b y D r a k e V a n Beek An a r e a - s t u d i e s p r o g r a m has b e e n e s t a b l i s h e d by t h e p o l i t i c a l science d e p a r t m e n t .

T H E P R O J E C T a t t e m p t s to e x a m i n e a limited geographical area in d e t a i l while giving s t u d e n t s the o p p o r t u n i t y to study with s o m e o n e w h o has had p r a c t i c a l experience in t h e area b e i n g studied.

O n e of t h e m a j o r a t t r i b u t e s of the program is its f l e x i b i l i t y , a c c o r d i n g t o J a c k H o l m e s , assist a n t p r o f e s s o r of p o l i t i c a l s c i e n c e . " W e d o n ' t w a n t t o set u p a large, e l a b o r a t e p r o g r a m w i t h a lot of administrative detail. Dean for Academic Affairs M o r r e t t e Rider agreed that the p o w e r of f a c u l t y review is " i n c o n sistent w i t h r e p r e s e n t a t i v e g o v e r n m e n t . T h e t e n d e n c y on the part of t h e f a c u l t y is t o get involved in

t h e p r o c e s s d i r e c t l y , w h i c h is s o m e w h a t d e s t r u c t i v e of t h e syst e m , " he s t a t e d .

Under the Drug Abuse Educat i o n Act of 1 9 7 0 , f u n d s are available " t o s u p p o r t innovative c o l l e g e and u n i v e r s i t y - b a s e d d r u g education projects."

According to a letter from J a m e s M. S p i l l a n e , chief of t h e D r u g E d u c a t i o n B r a n c h of t h e D e p a r t m e n t of H e a l t h , E d u c a t i o n and Welfare, preliminary prop o s a l s are d u e b y April 16, 1 9 7 1 .

Presently there are n o definite p l a n s and A n d y A t w o o d , codirector of student activities, would like a n y s t u d e n t w i t h e x p e r i e n c e in o r i n n o v a t i v e i d e a s for a drug program to contact him.

H o w e v e r , A t w o o d a d d e d , "1 q u e s t i o n t h e need f o r a c o m p r e hensive drug program because the s t u d e n t s have not e x p r e s s e d c o n cern that such a large scale problem exists on Hope's campus."

T h e HEW l e t t e r e m p h a s i z e d two points: the primary emphasis should be o n p r e v e n t i o n . . . a n d they (the programs) must be initiated, designed and directed b y students." Although the l e t t e r s t r e s s e s p r e v e n t i o n , it r e c o g n i z e s t h a t " s e r v i c e s such as h o t lines, drop-in centers, counseling and m e d i c a l aid, m a y b e e s s e n t i a l p a r t s of t h e e n t i r e e f f o r t . " B e c a u s e the law r e q u i r e s t h a t programs b e primarily run by s t u d e n t s , s t u d e n t a s s i s t a n c e is a necessity.

Faculty reviewed The H o p e College f a c u l t y met in f u l l session last M o n d a y t o discuss the report of the C o m m i t t e e on the E d u c a t i o n of M i n o r i t y G r o u p Students at Hope. The report recommended policy guidelines and o f f e r e d suggestions for i m p l e m e n t a t i o n w h i c h the f a c u l t y was to consider.

What emerged f r o m the meeting was an almost total disregard by the f a c u l t y for the letter of the report, concerning themselves instead w i t h defenses of existing m i n o r i t y student programs while failing to c o n f r o n t the many questions w h i c h the report raised.

The first question raised by the c o m m i t t e e was " s h o u l d m i n o r i t y g r o u p students be at H o p e ? " The c o m m i t t e e answered, "We are u n a n i m o u s in our feeling that it is desirable that m i n o r i t y group students be present on the H o p e College campus. The possibility that we

consider refusing admittance to m i n o r i t y students or reducing the number of m i n o r i t y students presently on campus was not a viable consideration. We do sense, however, the d i f f i c u l t y the m i n o r i t y g r o u p student (particularly the Black and the Chicano) has in finding acceptance and a socially c o m f o r t a b l e life on our c a m p u s . " The c o m m i t t e e suggests a program of candid recruiting and c o n t i n u a l advising t o further integrate the m i n o r i t y student i n t o the life of the campus, programs w h i c h , if they are to be successful, w i l l demand wide-spread f a c u l t y support and assistance.

Yet w h a t sort of response did the f a c u l t y give to this suggestion? There were no questions raised as to w h a t role the f a c u l t y should play in the advising of m i n o r i t y studdnts, neither was there any discussion as t o h o w the f a c u l t y c o u l d assist in making the campus socially more presentable to m i n o r i t y students. Rather, the faculty asked if funds were available for such a project, i m p l y i n g that an availability of funds precluded any f a c u l t y input.

The c o m m i t t e e further asked, " W h a t should be done to bring and a d m i t m i n o r i t y group students to H o p e ? " This question was similarly evaded, w i t h the f a c u l t y seemingly c o n t e n t to leave this issue in the hands of the O f f i c e of Admissions. Dean of Students Robert D e Y o u n g o u t l i n e d the present e f f o r t s being made to recruit m i n o r i t y students while Associate Dean for A c a d e m i c A f f a i r s J o h n Stewart presented a report on present e f f o r t s to recruit Chicano students.

There was no concern voiced as t o whether these e f f o r t s should be broadened, whether specialized r e c r u i t m e n t practices aimed exclusively at m i n o r i t y students should be inaugurated, or whether existing programs such as the Summer Trial and Evaluation Program should be expanded.

Therefore 1 would propose that the Administration f r o m Van Raalte, Admiss i o n s and F i n a n c i a l Aid p e o p l e f r o m t h e i r h o u s e , plus all t h e p r o f s in V o o r h e e s a n d V a n R a a l t e m o v e i n t o K o l l e n Hall, it w o u l d t a k e little m o n e y f o r such a conversion.

E a c h r o o m c o u l d fit t w o P r o f s , a D e a n , o r a S e c r e t a r y easily. AH t h e A d m i n i s t r a t i o n w o u l d be u n d e r o n e r o o f living in t h e spirit of o n e , big, h a p p y f a m i l y . E a c h r o o m is a l r e a d y c o m p l e t e w i t h t w o d e s k s ( w i t h five d r a w e r s a n d an o v e r h e a d b o o k s h e l f / l i g h t ) , t w o chairs, t w o c l o s e t s a n d two beds (optional) for a quick a f t e r n o o n nap.

T h a t they did n o t consider these suggestions can only be interpreted as a lamentable lack of concern. .The t h i r d question posed b y the c o m m i t t e e should have been of vital concern to the f a c u l t y . The question was, " W h a t should be done for m i n o r i t y group students w h o are enrolled at H o p e ? " The c o m m i t t e e answered, " T h e Hope faculty must take full educational responsibility for all students."

T o i m p l e m e n t this r e c o m m e n d a t i o n , the c o m m i t t e e suggested that new teaching methods and new curricula may have to be devised, that greater f l e x i b i l i t y in programing must be extended t o m i n o r i t y students and that some course sequences may have to be i n t e r r u p t e d or re-arranged to enable m i n o r i t y group students to p r o f i t maximally f r o m Hope's programs.

The suggestions, while they may not have been concrete, certainly are indicative of the directions the c o m m i t t e e feels the college must take to academically accommodate m i n o r i t y students. The c o m m i t t e e suggests, ' T h e faculty as a w h o l e or as a special, concerned group should give these matters s t u d y . " In no sense whatsoever d i d the faculty give any i n d i c a t i o n that these matters even deserved their study.

Ouestions were asked pertaining to the committee's avoidance of the p r o b l e m of educating the white m a j o r i t y at Hope, statements were made to the e x t e n t that, " t h e best education for m i n o r i t y groups is the best education for e v e r y b o d y . " N o t once were the biases of white-oriented t e x t books and syllabuses discussed. N o t once were the c o n t r i b u t i o n s of blacks and other m i n o r i t y groups to the disciplines of academia explored. N o t once was the suggestion of having black and chicano professor-counselors to relate to m i n o r i t y group students even given consideration.

N o t once d i d the faculty show interest in the suggestion that special o r i e n t a t i o n and preparatory courses be inaugurated to help in " t o o l i n g u p " students w i t h inadequate backgrounds.

What all this shows is that the c o m m i t t e e , in presenting their report to the faculty fatally misjudged the concern of the Hope College f a c u l t y for the m i n o r i t y student. That concern was at the very basis of the c o m m i t t e e ' s investigation, that its findings could so easily be dismissed by w h a t was supposed to be a socially conscious member of the college c o m m u n i t y , offers little hope that any one of the c o m m i t t e e ' s suggestions stands a chance of i m p l e m e n t a t i o n .

If the c o m m i t t e e wishes t o see its programs endorsed, it w i l l have to carry t h e m b e y o n d the l i m i t e d vision of the Hope College f a c u l t y . If there is a student concern that these programs be implemented, it must be voiced. If there is an administrative concern that these programs be financed and directed, it must be expressed. The endorsement w i l l have to come f r o m concrete actions taken on the committee's suggestions. T o wait for the faculty's concern w i l l be t o wait t o o long.

In A l e x a n d e r S o l z h e n i t s y n ' s novel it b e c o m e s p a i n f u l l y o b v i o u s t h a t all of u s s h o u l d be d e a l i n g w i t h t h e p r o s pect of d e a t h , b u t t h a t w e , like t h e p a t i e n t s in Ward 13, w o u l d r a t h e r p r e t e n d t h a t we will live forever.

I F T H E R E is n o a c c e p t a n c e of the reality of d e a t h , t h e r e is n o a p p r e c i a t i o n of t h e reality of life.

T h e q u e s t i o n of w h a t m e n live f o r becomes increasingly i m p o r t a n t to the p a t i e n t s in t h e c a n c e r w a r d as t h e y see m o r e and m o r e d e a t h all around them.

T h e c h a r a c t e r s are an i n t e r e s t ing c r o s s - s e c t i o n of Soviet s o c i e t y .

T h e r e is Pavel N i k o l a y e v i c h w h o has a p o s i t i o n of r e s p o n s i b i l i t y w i t h t h e P a r t y . N o t a single p r o f o u n d t h o u g h t o c c u p i e s Pavel N i k o l a y e v i c h ' s m i n d . H e is c o n t i n ually d i s t u r b e d by his f o r c e d association with the common r a b b l e in t h i s h o s p i t a l . N o t w i t h s t a n d i n g his w o r d s a b o u t t h e noble People for w h o m the g o v e r n m e n t exists, this m a n is horrified by the thought of s h a r i n g a b a t h r o o m w i t h a n y of his f e l l o w p a t i e n t s . All of his comments during philosophical d i s c u s s i o n s s o u n d as t h o u g h h e has m e m o r i z e d the p r o p e r a n s w e r s from some party manual.

O n e d a y a f r i e n d , named Alan Doggett w h o ran a c h i l d r e n ' s c h o i r s c h o o l in E n g l a n d , asked t h e p a i r t o w r i t e a p i e c e f o r the s c h o o l ' s e n d - o f - t h e - t e r m c o n cert in t h e s p r i n g of 1 9 6 7 .

T H E R E S U L T was a cantata w h i c h dealt w i t h t h e Biblical s t o r y of J o s e p h a n d t h e c o a t of m a n y c o l o r s . It w a s called Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. A f t e r a very w a r m r e s p o n s e f r o m English c r i t i c s t o w a r d t h e work, the t w o went on to write a r o c k o p e r a e n t i t l e d Jesus Christ Superstar.

T h e l a t t e r w o r k was r e c o r d e d with full o r c h e s t r a , r o c k e n s e m ble, c h o i r a n d a g r o u p of very talented people performing the lead parts.

The reception of Superstar in E n g l a n d was m i l d , b u t in A m e r i c a it w a s f a n t a s t i c . As a r e s u l t of t h e A m e r i c a n r e a c t i o n .

T H I S IS W H A T D i r e c t o r of A d m i s s i o n s T o m La B a u g h feels H o p e ' s p h i l o s o p h y is all a b o u t , and he f i n d s a large n u m b e r of p r o s p e c t i v e college e n t r a n t s att r a c t e d b y t h e idea. H o p e has received ^ 3 5 a p p l i c a t i o n s f r o m incoming freshmen to date.

This number represents a four p e r c e n t d e f i c i t in p r o j e c t i o n s f o r next year's enrollment. However, w h e n c o m p a r e d w i t h a t w e l v e per c e n t f i g u r e f o r A q u i n a s a n d similar s i t u a t i o n s in o t h e r MI A A s c h o o l s , this puts Hope well ahead in r e c r u i t i n g . A n d t h e t r e n d f o r t h e last t h r e e m o n t h s p r e d i c t s an even b e t t e r f i g u r e b y t h e e n d of enrollment.
