Presidential search continues by Gerald Swieringa T h e s e a r c h f o r a p r e s i d e n t of Hope College c o n t i n u e s with the Presidential Search Committee h o p i n g t o p r e s e n t a list of five or six names to the Board of T r u s t e e s at its May 6 m e e t i n g . ACCORDING T O Dr. Paul F r i e d , c h a i r m a n of t h e h i s t o r y department and f a c u l t y repres e n t a t i v e o n t h e PSC. t h e r e has not b e e n a full m e e t i n g of t h e PSC since J a n u a r y , b u t t h e c o m m i t t e e has m e t in t w o partial s e s s i o n s since t h a t t i m e . L E S L I E B e a c h , c o m m i t lee c h a i r m a n and c h a i r m a n ol t h e psychology department, explained early in t h e m e e t i n g t h a t t h e committee's purpose was " t o develop general policy guidelines" for Hope's minority students program. " T h e college s i m p l y had no p o l i c y g u i d e l i n e s , " he said. He a d d e d that t h e c o m m i t t e e was also to p r o v i d e s p e c i f i c suggest i o n s o n the issue ol m i n o r i t y students. Dennis Farmer, a seminary s t u d e n t d o i n g i n t e r n s h i p w o r k in t h e a c a d e m i c a f f a i r s o f f i c e , reported enrollment statistics for Hope minority students during t h e m e e t i n g . ACP all-ameriean honor awarded to Hope 'anchor' The Hope College anchor, u n d e r t h e e d i t o r s h i p of T h o m a s Donia, has b e e n awarded an A l l - A m e r i c a n r a t i n g f o r t h e first s e m e s t e r p u b l i c a t i o n s b y t h e Ass o c i a t e d Collegiate Press. T h e anchor received " M a r k s of D i s t i n c t i o n " f o r its c o n t e n t a n d c o v e r a g e , w r i t i n g and editing, physical appearance and photography. The Ail-American rating r e p r e s e n t s the h i g h e s t level of a c h i e v e m e n t r e c o g n i z e d by t h e ACP. The Hope publication was j u d g e d in c o m p a r i s o n w i t h c o l l e g e n e w s p a p e r s p r o d u c e d in s c h o o l s of a p p r o x i m a t e l y the s a m e e n r o l l m e n t , e m p l o y i n g similar o f f - s e t printing m e t h o d s and publishing o n a w e e k l y basis. receives Milliken's age recommendations
M i c h i g a n (i o v e r n o r William ( i . Milliken recommended t o the Michigan S t a t e Legislature Wednesday that " t h e age of t h e m a j o r i t y be r e d u c e d to 18 f o r all purposes." The recommendation is an e n d o r s e m e n t of t h e r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s m a d e by t h e " C o m m i s s i o n o n t h e Age of t h e M a j o r i t y " in a s p e c i a l s t u d y of laws, a d m i n i s t r a tive regulations, inconsistencies and i n a d e q u a c i e s in t h e s t a t e ' s present m a j o r i t y policy. In his r e c o m m e n d a t i o n , Milliken endorsed the c o m m i t t e e ' s s u g g e s t i o n s t h a t 18-year-olds " b e permitted and r e q u i r e d t o be parties t o litigation w i t h o u t a g u a r d i a n , be a l l o w e d t o e n t e r i n t o c o n t r a c t u a l a g r e e m e n t s , be emp o w e r e d t o m a k e their o w n wills, be f r e e f r o m all g u a r d i a n s h i p r e q u i r e m e n t s , be e m p o w e r e d t o
voluntarily submit themselves to m e n t a l i n s t i t u t i o n s for t r e a t m e n t , and be a l l o w e d t o v o t e . " The commission's most controversial s t a t e m e n t , r e c o m m e n d i n g a l o w e r i n g of the d r i n k i n g age t o 18, also received t h e g o v e r n o r ' s e n d o r s e m e n t . Milliken s t a t e d , "I have given this r e c o m mendation careful study and t h o u g h t a n d 1 ha ve c o n c l u d e d if all y o u n g a d u l t s are t o be c h a r g e d w i t h t h e full r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s of a d u l t h o o d , t h e y s h o u l d be accorded the full privileges of adults."
