News Hope and & Other Colleges Lose Patience With Greek Hazing , Drinking

Hearing of " l i f e - t h r e a t e n i n g " hazing activities at the Arcadian f r a t e r n i t y , they kicked the c h a p t e r off c a m p u s one month ago.

It w a s the second time in a year they'd disciplined a fraternity.

The administration, said Brian Breen, editor of the school p a p e r , is " a n t i - g r e e k . " And, for the first t i m e at Hope and scores of other c a m p u s e s around the country, a d m i n i s t r a t o r s probably would agree.

4, If t h a t ' s their opinion, t h a t ' s f i n e , " said Tom R e n n e r , director of C o l l e g e R e l a t i o n s . " B u t there's a growing national a w a r e n e s s t h a t g r e e k s m u s t be responsible citizens."

The troubles on H o p e ' s c a m p u s a r e just the most r e c e n t in which colleges h a v e been quick to discipline greeks.

Since F e b r u a r y , for e x a m p l e , a d m i n i s t r a t o r s at Duke and R u t g e r s universities and the universities of Rochester, Texas, Pennsylvania and Colorado h a v e disciplined, suspended or banned outright certain greek c h a p t e r s .

Still others opened d e b a t e s to c h a n g e the w a y f r a t s a r e run, or to get rid of t h e m altogether.

Yale University President Benno Schmidt — a f o r m e r Delta Kappa Epsilon blasted f r a t e r n i t i e s for their " e x c l u s i o n a r y " policies and e m p h a s i s on drinking. "If I were doing it again I would not join a fraternity." " S o m e r e p o r t s would indicate that alcohol consumption is the main reason for the existence of some of t h e m , " said Schmidt.

Stanford University Dean of Student Affairs J a m e s Lyons issued a report that said f r a t e r n i t i e s and sororities should c h a n g e the way they choose m e m b e r s if they want to stay on campus.

The c u r r e n t s y s t e m , h e said, e n c o u r a g e s greek organizations to d i s c r i m i n a t e on the basis of r a c e , gender, sexual p r e f e r e n c e , class and religion.

Students Against Greek Establishments (SAGE), a University of California-Santa Cruz student group with 95 m e m b e r s , is lobbying to shut down the u n i v e r s i t y ' s greek system on the grounds it fosters sexism, r a c i s m , homophobia and uses subjective selection methods when choosing new members.

Disliking greeks, in short, is an increasingly hot topic on m a n y campuses.

The c u r r e n t anti-greek w a v e probably began in the e a r l y 80's

when, p r e s s e d by i n s u r a n c e companies worried that d r u n k e n students might h u r t t h e m s e l v e s and sue their c a m p u s e s , a d m i n i s t r a t o r s tentatively began to try to control all sorts of potentially d a n g e r o u s activities.

Nevertheless, it took five y e a r s of neighborhood c o m p l a i n t s and ultimately a shooting incident to convince University of Arizona officials to ban the UA Sigma Nu chapter.

That s a m e year, the University of Georgia abolished a f r a t e r n i t y for the first time e v e r , but only a f t e r police broke up d r u g sales at the house. Twice. Drug use at Hope is known to h a v e occured at four f r a t e r n i t i e s and one sorority during the last few y e a r s .

"No one w a s willing to s a y this was wrong and take action b e c a u s e so m a n y a l u m n i belonged to f r a t e r n i t i e s , and no one w a n t e d to offent those who g a v e g e n e r o u s l y to t h e i r schools," said Eileen Stevens, who founded an anti-hazing group - the C o m m i t t e e to Halt Useless Killings — a f t e r h e r son died in a hazing incident. " A d m i n i s t r a t o r s also h a d an attitude of 'boys will be boys.' " All t h a t , Stevens said, is changing " a s people u n d e r s t a n d just how b a d this h a s b e e n . " No one wrings h a n d s or waits for c o m m i t t e e r e p o r t s a n y m o r e .

Hope's R e n n e r noted t h e r e a r e other reasons a d m i n i s t r a t o r s a r e cracking down on g r e e k s h a r d e r and f a s t e r : Hope's i n s u r a n c e c o m p a n y has t h r e a t e n e d to cancel liability i n s u r a n c e in the wake of r e p o r t s of e x c e s s i v e d r i n k i n g a n d physical abuse. All 11 of Hope's greek organizations w e r e sent letters notifying them of this two weeks ago. " E i t h e r we t a k e steps for s a f e , college-sponsored a c t i v i t i e s , o r we l o s e o u r insurance."

Greek themselves argue t h e y ' r e being victimized and unfairly stereotvped.

B r a n d t , executive d i r e c t o r of t h e N a t i o n a l I n t e r f r a t e r n i t y Council, points out that the popularity greek organizations have enjoyed throughout the 1980's — a f t e r suffering f r o m declining interest in the late 60's a n d 70's — can not be attributed to drinking alone.

to be drinking clubs," said Brandt. "We're promoting m o d e r a t e and lawful use of alcohol." Dow To Provide Chem.Scholarship For Student T h e Dow Chemical C o m p a n y Foundation of Midland, Mich, has once again supported Hope College and its c h e m i s t r y students. F o r an extended period of time, the Dow Foundation and Hope college will d e s i g n a t e an incoming f r e s h m a n a s a Dow Scholar.

Music By Three to End Great Performance Series Three winners of the Young Concert Artisits International Auditions will join to present a concert as the final event of the Hope Great P e r f o r m a n c e Series this Thursday, April 7, at 8 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

The concert of classical music, entitled Music by Three, will feature clarinetist Daniel McKelway, cellist Christopher C o s t a n z a a n d p i a n i s t Rina Dokshinsky. The concert will

include music by the trio as well as solo selelctions by Costanza and McKelway accompanied by Miss Dokshinsky.

The guest artist was to present master classes for Hope students today, April 6.

Tickets will be sold at the door tomorrow night. Tickets a r e $3 for students and all seats are general admission.

Auditions, 22-year-old clarinetist Daniel McKelway m a d e his Washington, D.C. debut as the opening event of the Young Concert Artists Series at the Kenneday Center in 1985. The distinguished music critic Paul Hume described McKelway as "an absolutely stunning virtuoso of the clarinet... very different from, but quite likely to stand on the s a m e eminent platform as Richard Stoltzman."

McKelway has appeared at the D u b r o v n i k F e s t i v a l in Yugoslavia, the Tanglewood Festival, and at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont. He has also performed concertos with orchestras including the Charlotte Symphony, the Rapides Symphony, and the P l y m o u t h P h i l h a r m o n i c . He teaches at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Mass.

A winner of the 1986 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, 23-year-old cellist Christopher Costanza m a d e his Kennedy Center debut in the 1987 Young Concert Artists Series in Washington, D.C. to a rave review by the Washington Post.

Costanza has performed as soloist with the New England Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, of which he has also been principal cellist. He has been a p a r t i c i p a n t in t h e M a r l b o r o F e s t i v a l and the Yellow Barn Music Festival in Vermont, and the Taos Chamber Music Festival in New Mexico.

His current studies a r e with Laurence Lesser at the New England Conservatory of Music in the prestigious Artist Diploma program.

Israeli pianist Rina Dokshinsky was presented ip her New .York recital debut in the Young Artists Series as winner of •

the 1987 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the 21year-old Miss Dokshinsky was also awarded the Bruce Hungerford Memorial Prize, the Joseph Kalichstein Piano Prize, and the Mortimer Levitt Career Development Award for Women Artists of young Concert Artists.

At t h e a g e of 13, M is s Dokshinsky performed as soloist with the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. After the

performance, Mehta invited her to appear with him at a concert he was conducting for the benefit of UNICEF in Florence, Italy.

Two y e a r s l a t e r , Miss Dokshinsky won first prize in the international competition for Young Pianists in Senegalia, Italy, and in 1985 she won the J e r u s a l e m Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition and performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3.

T h e H o p e College M u s i c Department will present a guest recital featuring mezzo-soprano Marion P r a t n i c k i , artist-inresidence from Western M i c h i g a n U n i v e r s i t y , on Wednesday, April 6 at 8 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

Pratnicki will also present a master class in vocal technique and interpretation on Thursday, April 7 with voice students from Hope College at 4:30 p.m. in Wichers auditorium.

P r a t n i c k i h a s t a u g h t at Hochstein Memorial Music School, Indiana University, and Holbrook's Fine Arts Academy prior to her appointment at Western and she holds degrees from New York State University and Indiana. She has studied and coached extensively with Elly Ameling and John Wustman.

Combining a teaching c a r e e r with an active schedule of appearances on the operatic s t a g e , s h e is a f r e q u e n t performer with the Chautaqua Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Syracuse Opera, the Opera Theater of Rochester, Michigan Opera Theater, Dayton Opera, and the Philadelphia Opera Company.

The mezzo-soprano has appeared in p r i m a r y roles with Sarasota Opera and m a d e her international debut as Gertrude in Romeo and Juliet with the L'Opera de Montreal. She will sing the same role with the Tulsa Opera Company in 1989. Past credits include performances of Barber of Seville, Hansel & Gretel, F a u s t , M a r r i a g e of Figaro, The Mikado, and Street Scene. She will be heard next

year as M a r t a in Mefistofele with the P h i l a d e l p h i a Opera Company, and recently performed Mendelssohn's Elijah with M o z a r t ' s Requiem Reviewing her performance of Zita in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi the Detroit F r e e P r e s s described the p e r f o r m a n c e as 44 both humorous and well-sung."

'Easter' Opens Friday, April 15 Ken M e d e m a

Medema to Conduct Workshops Grand Rapids native Ken Medema, an a c c o m p l i s h e d composer and musician, will be on the Hope College campus Thursday, April 7 to conduct four workshops and give an evening concert for the college's sixth annual Disabilities Awareness Week.

Blind since birth, Medema has been writing and performing his own songs since 1970 when he began composing original material for his work as a music t h e r a p i s t in a p s y c h i a t r i c hospital. He is now involved in full-time performance that has taken him from North America and Australia to Africa and Europe.

His four workshops for the Hope College D i s a b i l i t i e s Awareness Week will all be held in Winants Auditorium of Graves Hall and will include: "Music and the Exceptional Child" at 9:30 a . m . ; 44Up Close and Personal with Ken M e d e m a , " which will be interpreted for the deaf, at 11 a.m.; "On the Outside" at 1:30 p.m.; and "Music and Story" at 3 p.m.

His evening concert will begin

at 8 p.m. in the DeWitt Center Theatre. It too will be interpreted for the deaf.

Medema, who now resides in San Francisco, Calif., studied music therapy at Michigan State University, concentrating heavily on performance skills in piano and voice. His music is earthy and direct, full of stories and h u m o r , with a w a r m Christian emphasis. He has recorded four albums for Brier P a t c h Music, Inc., of San Francisco.

Medema understands the importance of inclusivism and sensitively seeks to challege his listeners to dream and work for a world of justice and peace. He always searches for ways people can connect to each other, enabling them to sense the sacred within themselves and in surprising places.

All of Ken Medema's events during Disabilities Awareness Week at Hope College a r e open to the public and admission is free.

Jennings To Present Senior Recital Constance M. Jennings of Kalamazoo will present her senior recital at Hope College on Saturday, April 9 at 8 p.m. in the Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

A graduate of Vicksburg High School, Jennings is a vocal education m a j o r and celllo performance minor at Hope. She teaches private piano lessons in the community as well a s string i n s t r u m e n t s for Holland Community Education.

For her recital, Jennings will p e r f o r m w o r k s by H a y d n , Schumann, Poulenc, and Muczynski. She studies piano with Joan Conway professor of music at Hope. A t r a n s f e r student from Western Michigan University, she studied there under Phyllis Rappeport, Matti Rackallio, and David pocock.

Jazz Nite Gala Planned T h e Hope College m u s i c department will present a Jazz Nite Gala Monday, April 18 featuring guest pianist John Shea. Open to the public free of charge, the concert will be held at8p.m.

The concert will feature the Hope College Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Chamber Ensemble under t h e d i r e c t i o n of R o b e r t Thompson, as well as the College Chorus under the direction of

Karen Frederickson.

The Flying Dutchmen launched their outdoor season by hosting Southwestern Community college last week.

The D u t c h m e n dropped the contest, 46M> to 107^. It w a s the first of five home dual meets this season.

This is coach B r e w e r ' s final season as m e n ' s track coach as he will be retiring f r o m the Hope faculty at the conclusion of the c u r r e n t school y e a r . Coach Brewer has guided the Hope m e n ' s track fortunes 32 y e a r s .

The Flying Dutchmen finished third behind Calvin and Albion in the MIAA standings last spring.

"Calvin is an overwhelming

choice to r e p e a t with Albion and Hope a s c h a l l e n g e r s , " said Brewer. " O u r strength will be in our depth because we have p e r f o r m e r s who a r e adequate or better in all 18 events."

The t e a m h a s considerable depth in s o m e events such as the 800-meter run and pole vault.

Two-time league champion Kevin Cole, a senior f r o m Jenison r e t u r n s in the 800-meter run. Last spring Cole qualified for the NCAA Division III national championship in the 800meter run. His time at the MIAA Field Day w a s a new league record. John Garrity, in a recent issue of Sports Illustrated, wrote an article entitled "Too Much Silly Stuff" criticizing the "show-off" slam-dunking in basketball.

Garrity begins his criticism on the world's best sport by saying that the All-star g a m e was "unbearably sloppy" and that " t u r n o v e r s outnumbered dunks two to o n e . " Granted it w a s sloppy, but allstar g a m e s a r e like that because they m a t c h the best against the best which certainly does not g u a r a n t e e the most fundamentally sound games.

What it does guarantee, at least in the NBA, is lots of scoring, lots of fun and lots of excitement, which is what these g a m e s were designed for in the first place.

Think about it. Nobody wants to see Michael J o r d a n slow down and gradually work the ball inside.

We would much r a t h e r see Air J o r d a n t a k e off, flapping tongue and all, and fly by everyone for a gorilla j a m , o r K a r e e m arch his sky hook that only God can block.

F u n d a m e n t a l l y sound basketball in the NBA? Forget it!

If you want fundamentals, go back to high school or college, but the words " f u n d a m e n t a l " and " N B A " don't belong in the s a m e sentence.

I don't know m a n y six-footers that can do "windmill dunks" or 180-degree turns. If they can, let them do it.

Garrity states that show-off dunking t h r e a t e n s the integrity of the g a m e like Marcus Allen "moon-walking toward the goal line" or J a c k Nicklaus "driving o n e - h a n d e d " would t h r e a t e n their respective games.

Personally, if Marcus can moon-walk, or the Golden Bear can play one-handed, I'd love to see it. The comparison is a bit ridiculous because those a r e things that nobody would do, whereas dunking has become part of the g a m e . Why not do it well?

Garrity's penalty ideas for "hot-dogging" a r e designed so that the player will get m o r e than just a scowl from his coach.

Since when h a s a coach, or a n y o n e - a s i d e f r o m the opposite t e a m - s c o w l e d a t spectacular dunks?

I r e m e m b e r my first dunk in high school. My coach didn't scowl. In fact everyone in the gym went wild, but that's a different story.

As far a s the r e f e r e e s going along with G a r r i t y ' s ideas, I think they enjoy seeing great dunks. I know I would.

Since when is showing off doing what you a r e capable of doing and doing it well?

If that's the case, a r e n ' t we all showing off?

Kingma both placed at the 1987 league meet in the 800-meter and 1500-meter runs.

Tri-captain Randy Johnson of Grand Rapids r e t u r n s in the 5000meter and 10,000 m e t e r r a c e s and will h a v e considerable help from f r e s h m a n Bruce Fletter, also from Grand Rapids.

Returning pole vaulters Steve Moore, a sophomore from Midland' sophomore Tim Ritsema of Holland; and junior Wes Wooley of Coloma all placed in last y e a r ' s conference meet.

They a r e joined by f r e s h m a n Ken Kimes of Scotville who has already cleared 14 feet in indoor competition this year.

Senior decathlete Todd Rose of Otsego is strong in the javelin and both hurdle races. He will also participate in the high jump, pole vault, discus, shot and long

jump. Last y e a r Rose was an NCAA Division III Ail-American as he finished fourth in the nation in the decathlon and fifth in the javelin.

The return of Keith Stewart, a junior from Grand Rapids, will bolster the high h u r d l e contingent, as will the addition of freshman standout J . R . Schoon of F r e m o n t .

The relays often provide the key to a t e a m ' s success and coach Brewer believes that Hope will be m o r e than respectable in that d e p a r t m e n t . The 97th annual MIAA Field Day will be held at Calvin College on May 5-6. Special activities a r e being planned in c o n j u n c t i o n with t h e 100th anniversary of the MIAA which is the nation's oldest collegiate conference.

Feature 'Under the Eye of the Clock' A Landmark Book

When I w a s in high school, there was a girl who had cerebral palsy who w a s in my homeroom.

She was really a wonderful person, but I never got much farther than just saying hi to her.

Something about her scared me, but I wasn't sure what it was.

Recently, I've come to the conclusion that people who have cerbral palsy or other handicaps remind m e that h u m a n s a r e really rather imperfect creatures, and I would r a t h e r not be reminded of that.

I w a s confronted by my fear, and society's fear, while reading Christopher Nolan's new book, "Under the E y e of the Clock".

Nolan is an Irish lad, now twentyone, who is affected by cerebral palsy. Although he cannot talk.

all his other senses a r e intact.

More importantly, Nolan lives more intensely than anyone I have ever encountered.

"Under the E y e of the Clock" is an autobiography of sorts: while Nolan has chosen to change his n a m e to Joseph Meehan and n a r r a r a t e the book in third person, the events a r e true.

Although it would be easy for Nolan to take an Elephantmannish stance towards the world, repeating " I am a m a n , " over and over again, he doesn't want to convince us that he is human. Instead, he thrusts his spasm-racked body at us, forcing us to acknowledge that he is. At the s a m e time, he undertands the fear that others feel towards him. When he enters a new class in his school, Nolan s a y s of M e e h a n ' s new c l a s s m a t e s ' reaction to him that "if he was in their shoes, he'd likely act the same or even worse."

While much of the book is narrative, Nolan often ta ke s off into poetic worldplay when he can't find exactly the right words to describe what it is he thinks and feels. " A r e crepuscular d r e a m s really the stuff of normality," he writes, " o r cod's claims caught wanting in the cold g r e y light of d a w n . " Sometimes, his wordplay is m o r e subtle. In one passage, he tells of the day " h a n d s o m e E a m o n n Campbell donned the comic's robe. He let the air out of the two tyres of Joseph's wheelchair." In another passage, he describes the effects of an overzealous s i s t e r ' s d o s e of M i l k of Magnesia: " h e r e he was trying to outwit his bowels whilst fellas on motorbikes zoomed about his belly."

T h e only quibble which might be raised about this book is that it is an autobiography, and a u t o b i o g r a p h i e s tend to be written at the end of one's life, not at the beginning. However, it seems justified in this case not only because Nolan would like to give full account of himself to explain why he writes a s he does, but also because Nolan's story is a story of heroism on his part and on his family's and t e a c h e r s ' parts. Without dedicated support.

N o l a n w o u l d be a n o t h e r institutionalized unfortunate, bowing and nodding in some f o r g o t t e n c o r n e r . E v e n the process of writing r e q u i r e s intense effort on both his and his mother's p a r t ; she cradles his chin in her hands as he types using a stick attached to his forehead. " U n d e r the E y e of the Clock" strikes m e as a landmark for people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities — a disabled m a n ' s Native Son. Nolan does not want to apologize for being what he is, nor does he want us to cluck our tongues and say " a h , poor thing." R a t h e r , he wants us to treat him and those like him as our equal. If you read only one contemporary work this year, make it " U n d e r the E y e of the Clock" by Christopher Nolan.

This one's an eye-opener.

"No, I finished those e x t r a bedrooms two weeks ago. They c a m e out real well. Some have neat two-person bathtubs sunk into the floor."

"Yeah, I bet God called him up after church and gave him the good word, 4 Hey Noah, I've decided that you need something to do since y o u ' r e too high and mighty to p a r t y with the m a s s e s after the Sabbath so I want you to build a h o u s e b o a t f o r m y righteous a n i m a l s in case it rains.'"

"Actually it sounds a lot like that to h e a r Noah tell it. F o r the first few weeks he didn't w a n t to talk about it, but finally he told me that God is sending a g r e a t flood to cleanse the e a r t h . " " I s it d i r t y ?
