Hope College Television has announced that it will debut a n e w t e l e v i s i o n s h o w on Wednesday, April 8, 1987 on Continental Cablevision channel 6 at9p.m.

The show called Wednesday Weekend will contain various short segments such as movie reviews, fashion tips, video countdowns, and interviews with interesting Hope College and Holland c o m m u n i t y personalities. It is a totally new format and unlike anything ever

produced at Hope.

According to Mark Verduin, e x e c u t i v e p r o d u c e r of Wednesday Weekend, "The show will h a v e s o m e t h i n g f o r everyone. It contains everything from fashion ideas to current movie reviews. IT wil be a great way to get ideas for things to do on the weekends."

The show will be produced and aired solely by students at Hope.

They will handle everything from creating the story ideas to running the c a m e r a s and

equipment.

The first show will air, as mentioned, on Wednesday, April 8, 1 9 8 7 , on C o n t i n e n t a l Cablevision channel 6 at 9 p.m.

Two additional shows will follow on Wednesday, April 15 and Wednesday, April 22.

Life is what you make of it

by Carol D. Johnson I don't know who said the above but the longer I live the more I believe it. Abraham Lincoln said, " P e o p l e a r e as happy as they m a k e up their minds to b e . " It isn't the situations we find ourselves in that are so devastating, its how we handle them.

This is my response to some of the issues raised in the article by the Sentinel, " H o p e ' s Black Students Face Added Challenges", f e a t u r e d in the March 11, 1987 Anchor. First of all to tell a young black person he or she is an " A m b a s s a d o r " for the whole black r a c e is so unfair.

It is much too heavy a burden to give to youth in a world full of racists. As the m o t h e r of five children, I've never done it and I don't condone it being done by other black p a r e n t s and black leaders. My children range in ages from, 27, twins 26, 13, and 12. They have always been the only one in their class, their school or the towns we've lived in. I've always told them, "You a r e you and I expect you to p e r f o r m a c c o r d i n g to t h e abilities I know you possess".

When one of my children showed signs of being a slow learner he was helped by myself and those

around him qualified enough to recognize it for what it was. Not because he was black. The children around him with the same problems came from various different backgrounds.

Oh, you young adults could learn so much f r o m little children.

Have you ever visited a preschool and watched the children of all nationalities play together?

They hug, they kiss, they s h a r e food, and they fight and make-up five minutes later. Is it really true you c a n ' t teach an old dog new t r i c k s ? Y o u ' r e awfully young to have fallen into that old saying a l r e a d y . Recists a r e made, not born.

Last year during "Black History Month", F e b r u a r y 1986, a reporter f r o m The Holland Sentinel interviewed m e . I could tell by his line of questioning he wasn't getting the juicy racist responses he was looking for. I have to a g r e e with Robert Davies, for 20 y e a r s a newspaper publisher in Canada, and m o r e recently a novelist and playwright. I understand he put it t h i s w a y , " J o u r n a l i s t s ' opinions a r e instant, therefore often shallow." This is also true of the ordinary news reporter.

In music news, both U2 and P r i n c e h a v e r e l e a s e d new albums. U2 is doing something a little different with their single releases: on the back of each one there a r e TWO NEW SONGS which did not m a k e the album.

The article, Hope's Black Students Face Added Challenges, is one of those t h a t was not given quiet thought nor was it carefully r e s e a r c h e d . I've learned enough in Professor Van Eyl's class to know a crosssection of black students was not represented. Anytime a "Hot Shot" reporter is sensitive to nothing other than the story he or she is out to get it's journalism a t its worst. I could hardly call whinning and complaining a way to face the challenge of r a c i s m .

A response to "a question"

by Dr.JimHerrick I was writing not to expound something I could call 'my religion,' but to expound 'mere' Christianity, which is what it is and was what it was long before I was born and whether I like it or not."

" Jesus of Nazareth, John 14:6 Christianity involves a number of hard teachings — teachings which are exclusive, demanding, uncompromising. At the very heart of Christianity is a brutal exection. and the Faith's founde**

teaches that in order to follow him we must identify ouselves with that terrible fact. Moreover, we read in the New Testament that following J e s u s m e a n s renouncing our own interests, even our lives. These are not altogether attractive ideas, but they are essential to Christianity.

In "A Question of F a i t h " (Anchor, March 4, 1987), John Gardner has attempted to soften two of Jesus' hardest teachings.

Whereas I • appreciate Mr. Gardner's serious efforts to wrestle with difficult issues, I cannot agree with the resolutions at which he arrives. Is it possible that Jesus meant that he is not the way, but a way as Mr.

by John Robert Gardner As I was pondering how to r e s p o n d to D r . H e r r i c k ' s pertinent criticisms of my first column, I noticed a cat meandering down the street.

Suddenly another cat stepped from behind a t r e e and challlenged the first with an angry snarl. The first cat had to stop, wait, then greatly alter its course before simply proceeding on its way. The second cat never moved — it just stayed where it was with a challenging glower.

Dr. Herrick claims I have "attempted to soften two of Jesus' hardest teachings."

Having read what I said in the first column about there being many possible ways to go Christ's " W a y " (as he speaks of it in John 14:6), Dr. Herrick has over looked the fact that I was merely seeking to clarify the diversity of the Christian faith.

He is correct, however, in anticipating that I would extend this advocation of diversity b e y o n d t h e b o u n d s of Christianity to the other faiths of

the world.

To reiterate the point in question, I had asserted that, c o n s i s t e n t with the widely accepted idea of the endless diversity of human nature from person to person, when Christ calls a man to take up his cross and deny himself, there will obviously be many different crosses taken up and, thus, many " w a y s " to follow Christ's way.

So what about the cats? How often does it h a p p e n t h a t someone of a different set of religious beliefs than our own (Christian or otherwise) gets challenged as they a r e going on T H E I R OWN WAY s i m p l y because we want to lay claim to the s upr emacy of our own territory? When we plunge into quibbling about how our faith is the only way, we are much the same as the snarling cat asserting its territory. As I mentioned in my second column, religion has no business being d r a g g e d into s u c h s e l f i s h bickering. To say that such exclusivism was what Christ

Gardner suggests? Is it possible that Jesus meant we need to take up a cross rather than his own cross? I don't think that Mr. G a r d n e r ' s answers to these questions fit well with New Testament teaching.

As for the first question, in John 14:6 Jesus says more than simply " I am the w a y . " What comes after this statement is crucial to our understanding of his intent. Jesus adds that "no one can come to the Father, but by me." The point, whether we like it or not, seems inescapable.

Jesus ws not allowing for the possibility of "other ways," but was insisting as forcefully as one can insist that he was the one and

only way into the Kingdom of God. This teaching is offensive to our democratic sensibilities, and runs against modern notions of tolerance, plurality and equality.

Nevertheless, we are not free to alter the teaching to fit our preferences, regardless of the e l e g a n c e of our a r g u m e n t s toward that end.

R e g a r d i n g our second question, the cross of Jesus is unique. It is not the cross of difficulty or common human suffering. It is the cross of atonement, and to take up that cross is to identify ourselves with God's redemptive act carried out by his son, Jesus Christ. The cross of Jesus cannot be read out of the Bible; the whole biblical record points to this event.

It is not something to avoided, but confronted. It is Christianity, a point Paul is making in I Corinthians 1:23 when he writes that "we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who a r e called, the power and wisdom of God." Mr. Gardner addresses important issues in "A Question of F a i t h . " But, I think we must each be as sure as it is possible to be t h a t we do not m a k e Christianity "our religion" by s o f t e n i n g , d i l u t i n g or domesticating it. Lewis is right to insist that Christianity "is what it is and was what it was long before I was born and whether I like it or not."

meant in John 14:6 when he spoke of being "the w a y " is to say that Christ was concerned with who gets the credit for salvation. Are we willing to continue portraying Christ as some ambitious quota seeker determined to impress God with all the people he saved?

Don't take my word for it. The disciples fell into much the same trap as Dr. Herrick. In Luke 9:49 "John answered, 'Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us.' (do two cats come to mind here?) But Jesus said to him, 'Do not forbid him: for he that is not against you is for you." And Matt. 20:23, where Jesus says "...to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those whom it has been prepared by my Father."

Contrary to the accusation that I am softening Christ's teachings — I am headed on quite a different course. I am the absolute denial of self which we all accept as Christ taught it.

However, this teaching needs to

be hardened to a degree of selfdenial which includes denying ourselves the self-righteous sense of self-justification that we have sole claim to the Way which Christ presumably made available to ALL m a n k i n d .

P e r h a p s one reason that the totally exclusive truth claims of Christianity continue to be m a d e with no effect is because they a r e outside the teachings of Christ.

Condemning the faith which another person lives has no part in building our own relationship to God. Again, Christ is not an end in himself — he is the Way to the end: God. Many faiths have ways which occupy the same place in the religion as Christ does in ours, the various ways embody much the same truths and morals. They are all seen as means to a greater end. Yes, there are many different ways, but, perhaps, there is One End for all thosfe ways.

As Dr. Herrick knows, there are many arguments against the truth of Christianity. The only one which can really disprove Christianity would be proof that there was no Resurrection. Such

an unlikely e v e n t would, seemingly, be easy to disprove.

But no one has. The jury is still out on Christianity. It is made true by faith. Is it too much to ask that we allow that the jury still be out with other faiths as well? We needn't necessarily affirm them.

But, in living our own and going our way, allow them the same leeway. If ours is more true, it will show in the lives we live, not in the attacks we make. Anyone can criticize a faith — it doesn't make them anymore religious to do so.

I offer, in closing, another C.S. Lewis quote, also from Mere Christianity. "God has not told us what His arrangements about the other people are. We do know that no man can be saved except through Christ; we do not know that only those who know him can be saved through him...if you are worried about the people on the outside, the most unreasonable thing you can do is to remain outside yourself...If you want to help those outside you must add your own little cell (self) to the body of Christ who alone can help t h e m . "

Petrovich Scholarship Announced Dr. G.L. Penrose, c h a i r m a n of the Department of History, has announced that the first, full Michael B. Petrovich Memorial Scholarship will be awarded this year. The award will go to. a student who plans to study abroad with significant time spent in Yugoslavia and who, without the aid of the scholarhip, might otherwise be unable to afford a foreign experience.

Penrose explained that the scholarship is the result of a tremendous response from Dr. Petrovicirs students, friends and colleagues to the d e p a r t m e n t ' s decision to establish an endowed fund in m e m o r y of the late Russian and E a s t European specialist. While the a c t u a l amount of the a w a r d will v a r y according to the r a t e of return each year, Penrose says that the fund is large enough to insure a scholarship of at least $1000.00. " W e u n d e r s t a n d the scholarship a s a continuing i n s t u t i o n a l c o m m i t m e n t to international understanding, to the meeting of E a s t and West, of Europe and America, that Mike did so much to foster," says Penrose, he also noted that a small award h a s already been made to Mr. John P. Engel, a Hope Psychology m a j o r , who will use the funds to help d e f r a y expenses for the annual Mediterranean May T e r m which Dr. P e t r o v i c h founded and directed until his death this past summer. The tradition is carried on this y e a r under co-directors Professor Nancy Taylor and visiting Fulbright scholar. Dr. Nikola Koljevic, a close friend of Dr. Petrovich.

"We wanted to do something immediately to support the May Term. However, in the future we will select students who m a k e a

s e m e s t e r or a c a d e m i c y e a r commitment. We have in mind students who might enroll in such p r o g r a m s as the Comperative European T e r m sponsored by the Great Lakes College Association, though we a r e open to various proposals, including one that the students designs."

The 1987 GLCA E u r o p e a n Term will be directed this coming fall semester by Dr. J a m e s Heisler, chair of the Hope E c o n o m i c s and B u s i n e s s Administration department.

Another likely p r o g r a m for would-be Petrovich scholars is the GLCA Fall Semester in Y u g o s l a v i a . The p r e f e r e n c e given to applicants who will study in Yugoslavia is not intended to exclude applications that have another geographical or cultural focus.

Negotiations a r e currently under w a y to establish an additional fund in Yugoslavia for the use of the s c h o l a r s h i p w i n n e r s . D r . K o l j e v i c will negotiate the local currency fund when he returns to Yugoslavia this spring with the Mediterranean May T e r m . This should allow Petrovich scholars to c o v e r s o m e i n - c o u n t r y expenses from the fund created

by Yugoslav supporters of the scholarship.

I n t e r e s t e d s t u d e n t s should obtain application forms from the History departmental office in Lubbers Hall. The deadline for a p r o g r a m starting next fall semester is April 15. Candidates will be asked to write an essay explaining the purpose of their planned course of study and will sit for an interview with the selection committee composed of the d e p a r t m e n t m e m b e r s and Ms. Vesna Crnjanski-Petrovich.

Ford to be Honored A special convocation will be held honoring America s 38th president, Gerald R. Ford, at Hope College on Friday, April 24 in Dimnent Memorial Chapel, according to Hope President Gordon Van Wylen.

An honorary Doctor of Law degree will be conferred upon the former president at the 9:45 a.m. e v e n t . Although t h e collge convocation is being held at a special time, it will still retain the traditional setting with the Hope Chapel Choir singing an anthem, and professors will m a r c h in academic regalia.

The public is invited and admission is free.

Ford has visited the Hope campus on several occasions. In 1971, w h e n he w a s a congressman from Michigan's fifth district. Ford was the keynote s p e a k e r at the dedication of the DeWitt Center.

In 1977, as a f o r m e r U.S. president, he returned to c a m p u s to give lectures as part of a threeday tour of Western Michigan c o l l e g e s s p o n s o r e d by t h e American E n t e r p r i s e Institute. " I t is a great priviledge to have President Ford visit our c a m p u s and award him this honorary degree," said Van Wylen. "While we are seeking to honor him and r e c o g n i z e his d i s t i n g u i s h e d r e c o r d of s e r v i c e a s a congressman, vice president, and president of the United

It is particularly significant that he began his c a r e e r in Congress as the r e p r e s e n t a t i v e f r o m Ottawa and Kent counties, and thus was our representative.

President F o r d ' s visit will be a m e m o r a b l e day for Hope College."

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of the University of Michigan and Yale Law School, Ford was the only U.S. president to never be elected to office. In 1973, then-Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned a f t e r pleading "no contest" to income tax evasion c h a r g e s . For the first time under the provisions of the 25th a m e n d m e n t . P r e s i d e n t Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixon nominated Ford as the new vice p r e s i d e n t , which w a s l a t e r a p p r o v e d by C o n g r e s s in December 1973. In subsequent months, Watergate crime and cover-up charges mounted against Nixon. Facing a Senate i m p e a c h m e n t trial, Nixon resigned in August 1974, and Ford b e c a m e president.

America started to enjoy a m o r e personal president, one who skiied, swam, and prepared his own b r e a k f a s t on national television — a stark contrast to the imperialistic style of the previous administration.

Ford cut inflation in half by 1976, announced an amnesty plan for Vietnam e r a d r a f t e v a d e r s and military deserters, kept a h a r d l i n e on g o v e r n m e n t s p e n d i n g , and o r d e r e d t h e helicopter evacuation of cii remaining Americans from Saigon in 1975. After winning the R e p u b l i c a n n o m i n a t i o n over Ronald Reagan for the 1976 national elections. Ford was defeated by D e m o c r a t J i m m y Carter for the presidency in one of the closest elections in history.

Today, Ford resides in P a l m Springs, California and r e m a i n s a c t i v e o n b e h a l f of t h e Republican P a r t y and other charitable causes, serves on corporate boards, and speaks frequently before college and other audiences.

Marshall Addresses MUN

by Sarah E b e r h a r d Alex Marshall, who serves as chief of publications and media services for the United Nations Fund F o r Population Activities, UNFPA, was on Hope's c a m p u s on March 12 and 13 as an active participant of the Model United Nations. Mr. Marshall spoke at the opening banquet on March 12, gave the keynote address on March 13, served as a panelist for the General Assemblies and visited all the c o u n c i l s throughout the day of Friday. In each of the functions that he performed, he w a s well-received and w e l l - i n f o r m e d . As a representative of the United Nations in New York City, Mr. Marshall brought with him firsthand knowledge of many a r e a s that were applicable to the happenings a t Hope's Model United Nations.

Mr. Marshall's m a j o r concern, at the present, is the July 11th birth of baby 5 billion. The date is a p p r o x i m a t e , , but the implications of baby 5 billion a r e varied. The focus of the UNFPA will be on t r y i n g to g e t g o v e r n m e n t and p e o p l e to contemplate the question of population. "What do 5 billion people m e a n for the w o r l d ? " asks Alex Marshall. As a p a r t of his position, Mr. Marshall also strives to know the p r e s s u r e s and problems in the population of our world and seeks to find the best way to approach the problem.

The organizers of the Model United Naitons were excited to have had Alex Marshall as a part of t h e i r p r o g r a m . H a v i n g someone f r o m the actual United Nations added even more authencity to a well-prepared event.

I c a m e to Hope for two r e a s o n s : F i r s t for an education that I think r a n k s in t h e h i g h e s t of a c a d e m i c excellence and for the challenge of p u r s u i n g that education.

Secondly I c a m e to give to Hope College the little talent that I h a v e , my e x p e r i e n c e , and whatever else I have to offer. I enjoy being around the other studetns and although I m a y not have much going socially at Hope, I had a blast at t4 Winter Fantasia".

The article as it w a s written, did a great dis-service to A1 Gonzales; intergrity and the efforts of this administration in trying to serve the needs of minority students. To have an office you can go to wtih your problems as a black student if F i r s t Class. T h e r e w a s no Multicultural Affairs Office on any c a m p u s in the 60's. That opportunity in itself is F i r s t Calss treatment. I have spent many sessions in Al's office -trying to get feedback as to what can be done to m a k e o t h e r black students feel as welcomed as I have always felt here at Hope. I was asked if I was going to send my response to David L a m b e r t ' s " P r e j u d i c e Anonymous" article back in F a b r u a r y 1987 to the Sentinel? I said then as I say now, NO! Being a part of Hope is like being a p a r t of a second family. Maybe black family loyalty has changed since I c a m e along. When I w a s growing up, if you had a beef with family you didn't take it out in the street. A better term at this point would be, "Don't hang out your dirty laundry for all the world to see."

As a Non-traditional student at Hope I don't fit into every nook.

Europe Term Offers Change

by Bonnie i>chalhamer The 1987 fall European Term, according to Dr. J a m e s Heisler, chairman of the Business and E c o n o m i c s D e p a r t m e n t and A c a d e m i c D i r e c t o r of t h e program, offers students a refreshing change from traditional overseas study programs. The program, says Heisler, " c o m b i n e s the traditional independent study project with many nonacademic experiences such as sightseeing and touring."

The t h r e e m o n t h multidisciplinary p r o g r a m will provide a unique opportunity for students to discover new cultures and new customs. Students begin their trip with a three day orientation in Philadelphia to become acquainted with others participating in the program and the particular skills they will n e e d to d e v e l o p t h e i r independent research project.

From Philadelphia, it's on to Yugoslavia and the Netherlands for a six week field study of the social and economic similarities and differences of these two countries. The remaining seven weeks of the p r o g r a m will be spent in London where students will work on their research projects that will be presented at the end of the t e r m . Although seminars and meetings involving group activities and discussion make up a large proportion of the program, students will have plenty of time to explore on their own and to work on their projects.

In addition to the project, students a r e asked to keep a field notebook or journal recording and reflecting upon observations and experiences. At the end of the term, students will submit a written self-evaluation to the staff assessing the particular aspects of the p r o g r a m they had f o u n d to be b e n e f i c i a l in conducting their research.

The people who w e r e r e t a i n i n g their attendance slips decided to hand in their slips, and approximately 30 men elected to walk out of chapel at the beginning of Wednesday's worship service...

One of the most rewarding benefits of the program, Heisler feels, is the diversity among students participating in the program. Heisler has received applications from students with interests ranging from those wanting to study the medical c a r e s y s t e m s of these countries to those interested in,the arts, women's issues, and education.

These very different interests and backgrounds, Heisler believes, will add a definite r i c h n e s s to t h e g r o u p ' s experience.

Heisler's own experience with Europe has been a positive one.

He has led two May t e r m s in England that have focused on M a n a g e m e n t in the British Economy, and although he has never been to Yugoslavia or the Netherlands, he expects the S i m i l a r i t i e s and d i f f e r e n c e s among these countries to be fascinating.

Heisler has received only one formal application from the Hope College student body, and he is willing to accept late applications from those still i n t e r e s t e d . N o t i f i c a t i o n of acceptance into the program will be within one week of application submission. continued from 3 In addition to a desire for quality and ability to commit the time, it is necessary to select an editor with proper skills. An editor and assistant editor should display, through written submissions, the ability to write well. While it is not upsetting to see an occasional mistake or poorly written article, it is critical that the editor have a firm g r a s p of writing, to be able to guide his staff. I think in this regard the Anchor has m a d e good progress, however it should become s t a n d a r d procedure.

Reading those old Anchors from 15 and 20 y e a r s ago — even those first issues 100 y e a r s ago — the Anchor has stood for the views, complaints, events and s u c c e s s e s of Hope College.

Although a student paper, it is read by all p a r t s of the college community and stands as a voice piece for all of them. It a p p e a r s time for that community — the four y e a r collective m e m o r y that resides in the students, as well as others who have been here much longer — to continue the Anchor on its journey to regaining its partially lost status. The issue is not student apathy. It is simply that students will not participate, write for or read a p a p e r that does not exist on the cutting edge of Hope College life with a commitment to quality. -

Jarzembowski Performs at Kalamazoo Each year, Kalamazoo College hosts the K a l a m a z o o B a c h Festival where winning competitors perform the music of Bach and other Baroque composers. The p r o g r a m includes piano, h a r p s i c h o r d , cello, and other soloists, ensemble groups, and choirs. All entrants must be of high school or college age and most enter through a college or university.

The competition began last fall when the j u d g e s r e v i e w e d a u d i t i o n s by t a p e . T i m Jarzembowski, a junior who is a piano performance m a j o r here at Hope, sent a tape and was invited back for live a u d i t i o n s in January., Out of twenty semifinalists, the judges selected the highest scores while trying to create an interesting variety of Baroque music for the Festival.

Tim, playing the Bach Toccata in E Minor, was one of the eight finalists who won the honor to play in the F e s t i v a l . T i m performed the Toccate in the Stetson C h a p e l , K a l a m a z o o College, last Saturday.

Hope is proud to have one of its students chosen to perform in the Bach Festival, for students from all over the state of Michigan enter the competition. J o a n Conway, Tim's piano teacher and a professor in the Music Department, says "piano is the hardest category," for this is w h e r e competition is m o s t intense. Saturday's piano performances included Tim, two other soloists, and a piano duo.

Tim is Joan Conway's third winner in the Bach Festival, and several others from Hope have also won in recent years.

Tim Jarzembowski says that competitions "do not necessarily mean the best person always wins." Judges may disagree with i n t e r p r e t a t i o n s , and good pianists can have bad days and vice versa. Nor is winning competition a "prize." "The competition should inspire you to make the best music," Tim says.

In a n e r a of p i a n i s t i c specialists, John Browning is one artist who does not wish to confine his basic repertoire within any particular stylistic boundaries and it ranges from Scarlatti and Bach through to S t r a v i n s k y . His a r t i s t r y , h o w e v e r , is p a r t i c u l a r l y associated with the Classical School, French Impressionism, the Russian School, and recently with the music of Franz Liszt.

Last Visitation Day Friday The Hope College admissions office will sponsor its final visitation day of the school year for prospective college students, Friday, April 10.

The visitation day allows high school seniors and their parents an opportunity to see Hope College first-hand by touring the campus, visiting classes and meeting with students.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. in the Maas Center at 11th S t r e e t and Columbia Ave., Holland. The formal program will end at 3:30 p.m.

Participation is free. Students and parents wishing to eat lunch on c a m p u s may purchase tickets at the time fo registration.

There will also be a special day for high school juniors on Friday, April 24.

he played in New York and at the Spoleto Festival in Italy in the space of 36 hours. Another time h e g a v e r e c i t a l s on f i v e consecutive days in five different cities, and in another marathon he once played seven different concertos within five weeks with four m a j o r orchestras.

This has been another full season for Browning with the Mostly Mozart Festival choosing him as a featured artist for their New York tour in nine conerts throughout the State. In New York City at Carnegie Hall he appeared on tour with the St. Louis Symphony, performing the Barber Concerto. Recital performances in addition to Hope College have included Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Occidental C o l l e g e in C a l i f o r n i a , t h e University of Kentucky, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Long Beach, New York. He has performed the w o r k s of M o z a r t , F a u r e , Beethoven, and Prokofiew with orchestras across the country from Vancourver, Utah, and Oregon to Nashville, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. He will also be at the Hollywood Bowl to open the season for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and last month appeared at Alice Tully Hall with the Guarnieri Quartet.

Most of the awarded films are still in the area, and if you want to see any of them cheap, the Quad 6 (on 29th Street in GR) has $1 movies...not a bad deal if you load a car up with friends....

Meyer Cottage located on 10th St. is a charming beige house. It seems to be fairly representative of most Hope cottages, except M e y e r h a s one d i s t i n c t i v e difference, it houses multi-racial students from all walks of life. In addition to Rosalyn Moten, Leah Stoks and Lisa McMillian, three of H o p e ' s B l a c k - A m e r i c a n students, there are two white students, Shelley Reigle and Brenda Conant, a J a p a n e s e student, Chikako Arakaki, and H e l e n T e c l e m a r i a m , an Enitrean.

Meyer Cottae is a fine example of the larger diversity picture Hope is currently trying to a c h i e v e . At M e y e r l o v e , friendship, understanding and Christian nurturing are manifested by all. After talking with three of the eight residents, one can conclude that diversity and ethnic cultural mix has only helped to enhance their college experience. When questioned regarding why they have chosen to live there, whether or not the cottage promoted segregation, and as to why it is important to have a multicultural house there were some suprising answers.

All three girls denied charges that such a living establishment promoted segregation.

Reigher stated "No, living in M e y e r does not p r o m o t e segregation. Even though, at first glance, the term 'Black' house sounds as if it is only for Black students. I think the multicultural environment is significant for the campus. We nave Black, White, Hispanic and international s t u d e n t s living here. It promotes diversity and friendship. We're all one big family."

Ms. R e i g l e r ' s s t a t e m e n t seemed best to express the essence of Meyer: "I have housemates that are true friends.

We allow each other to be ourselves. We respect and c a r e about what happens in each others' lives. We have grown into a family. Life in Meyer is all about friendship."

Anchor Photo Contest The Anchor is sponsoring a photo contest

The idea s t e m s from the recent best-seller A Day in the Life of America.

Our idea is to have students take v a r i o u s photos around campus during a particular day, Monday, April 13. Students must take black and white photos of anything reflective of life at Hope. Shooting must take place betweeen 12 a.m. and midnight

on the 13th.

Prints must be turned in at the Anchor Office in DeWitt by Friday, April 24. There will be a box for all entries. The Anchor staff would a p p r e c i a t e photographers to record time and name of people in photo.

(There will be a copy of Northwestern's paper in . the Anchor Office for ideas.)

Prizes a r e $75 for 1st, $50 for 2nd, and. $25 for 3rd. The final product will be published in the April 29 Anchor edition.

"I registered for those classes at the same time only b e c a u s e my s c h e d u l e wouldn't work out differently and I can recall being advised against it because of the heavy reading and writing those classes generally e n t a i l . " But, she reported, "the work became easier because the nature of the classes was such that each class helped me understand the others better." This student was writing of an experience in the second semester of her freshman year.

Her positive response is typical of student responses to a survey conducted after the first round of paired courses: All said the work in paired courses was no greater than in non-paired courses.

All said they would take another pair if the opportunity arose.

The aim of paired courses is to help students understand their core courses better, and the program seems to be achieving this aim. Students who have taken paired courses respond favorably.

the IDS courses, those in paired courses are taught separately, graded separately, and given credit by separate departments, not by IDS. In fact, paired courses are just like any other course in the core curriculum, e x c e p t t h a t the p r o f e s s o r s involved have worked together to intergrate the material in their courses. They have done this to benefit students, and students who have taken paired courses seem to have benefitted.

What is the future of paired courses at Hope? Only Hope students can answer that question. Three pairs are planned for next fall. This is three times the number of pairs offered last fall. Art 160 (Hostory of Art) will be paired with Philosophy 218 (History of Science and Technology).

English 231 (World Literature I) will be paired with Philosophy 219 ( A n c i e n t P h i l o s o p h y ) .

Economics 201 (Principles of Ecomonics) will be paired with S o c i o l o g y 151 ( S o c i a l Anthropology).

When f a c u l t y m e m b e r s complained about paired courses, their complaints invariably had to do with the small number of students who w e r e a c t u a l l y t a k i n g both courses of a given pair. "The paired course students comprised less than a third of the total class," one faculty member wrote. "With such percentages, paired course preparation had precious little impact on the actual teaching of the course."

This professor did not know that one third is actually a high ratio of paired to non-paired students in paired courses. The figure cited above (six out of sixtyt h r e e ) is a m o r e t y p i c a l percentage.

All the indications are that students who take both sections of these pairs will have a better chance of doing well in both courses than students who take the same courses separately.

Whether students actually decide to take advantage of this benefit remains to be seen.

Nonetheless, very few students actually take them. For example, only six of sixty-three students in one pair were taking both courses at the same time.

This is a typical percentage.

Some students confuse paired c o u r s e s with the two IDS courses, "The Golden Age of Greece" and "The Two Souls of G e r m a n y . " Unlike students in

What about the faculty workshops? Here again, faculty m e m b e r s responded - very positively. Evaluations indicated that the workshop conducted last spring had made faculty m e m b e r s much more aware of what their colleagues were doing in cultural history. Participants also said the workshop would h a v e a n i m p a c t on t h e i r teaching—from the texts they select, to the methods they use in interpreting texts, to the way they approach their students in class and out.

A f a c u l t y m e m b e r or student who b e l i e v e s that he or she h a s o b s e r v e d or in other w a y s detected a violation of the A c a d e m i c Honor Code has a n u m b e r of options for d e a l i n g with this situation. A. w h i l e t n e n a t u r a l h e s i t a t i o n of s t u d e n t s to confront other students on a p e r c e i v e d v i o l a t i o n is recognized, it is e x p e c t e d that each student will take seriously h i s or h e r responsibility to m a i n t a i n the integrity of the c o m m u n i t y .

The options open to a student in doing so are a s follows: 1. P e r s o n a l l y confront the offending student.

If this student a c k n o w l e d g e s that a violation occurred, the options a v a i l a b l e are: a. Drop the m a t t e r after appropriate counsel. b. U r g e the offending student to self-report the incident to the faculty m e m b e r or the A c a d e m i c Honor Code Council. If the o f f e n d i n g student a g r e e s to do this, a p p r o p r i a t e f o l l o w - u p is urged to e n s u r e that this has happened.

If the offending student does not a c k n o w l e d g e t h a t a violation h a s occurred, or r e f u s e s to self-report the violation, the procedure outlined in 2. below c a n be followed or the m a t t e r m a y be dropped.

2. D i s c u s s the incident with the f a c u l t y m e m b e r and m u t u a l l y a g r e e how any follow-up w i l l b e handled.

B. F a c u l t y m e m b e r s h a v e the responsibility to follow up on s u s p e c t e d or r e p o r t e d violations of the A c a d e m i c Honor Code. The normal procedure is to personally confront the s t u d e n t suspected of the violation and discuss the incident with the student.

If t h i s s t u d e n t a c k n o w l e d g e s that a violation has occurred, the options a v a i l a b l e to t h e f a c u l t y m e m b e r are: a. If the violation is d e e m e d minor, impose an appropriate constructive or a d m o n it o r y sanction. The incident and sanction m u s t be reported to the A c a d e m i c Honor Code Council. b. If the violation is d e e m e d m a j o r , i m p o s e an appropriate g r a d e sanction up to failure in the e v e n t (examination, paper, report).

The incident and sanction m u s t be reported to the Academic Honor Code C o u n c i l . If t h e f a c u l t y m e m b e r b e l i e v e s that a m o r e s e v e r e sanction than this should be i m p o s e d , he or s h e should s u b m i t the recommended sanction, along with the details of the incident, to the A c a d e m i c Honor Code Council. T h e Council will decide on the sanction.

2. If the student does not a c k n o w l e d g e that a violation of the A c a d e m i c Honor Code has occurred, but the faculty member believes the e v i d e n c e for a violation is substantial, the faculty m e m b e r m a y follow s t e p s 1 .a. or Lb. above.

3. If the faculty m e m b e r is uncertain as to how the incident should b e handled, he or she can report the incident to the A c a d e m i c Honor Code Council. T h e faculty m e m b e r and the Council will mutually a g r e e a s to how the incident will be handled.

4. If the A c a d e m i c Honor Code Council d e t e r m i n e s that the offending student has had o n e or m o r e p r e v i o u s violations, the Council m a y impose a more severe sanction than that i m p o s e d or r e c o m m e n d e d by the faculty m e m b e r . H o w e v e r , no course grade will be c h a n g e d by the Council without the concurrence of the faculty member.

R I G H T S OF S T U D E N T S S U S P E C T E D OF A VIOLATION A student who b e l i e v e s he or she has been unjustly a c c u s e d of a violation by a student or faculty m e m b e r , or sanctioned for a violation by a faculty m e m b e r , can a p p e a l to t h e A c a d e m i c Honor Code Council, The Council h a s authority in such c a s e s to render a decision on the m a t t e r that is binding on all parties.

Decisions of the A c a d e m i c Honor Code Council m a y be appealed to the President, who will seek to a c h i e v e a m u t u a l l y - a g r e e a b l e solution, tf this cannot be a c h ie v e d , the matter m a y b e appealed to the Board of T r u s t e e s for final disposition.

All r e c o r d s r e l a t i n g to violations of the A c a d e m i c Honor Code are confidential and w i l l r e m a i n in the custody of the R e g i s t r a r under the su p e r v isio n of the A c a d e m i c Honor Code Council. All s u c h records of students who g r a d u a t e are destroyed at the t i m e of graduation. A student who has violated the A c a d e m i c Honor Code m a y , after two y e a r s of full c o m p l i a n c e with the A c a d e m i c Honor Code, petition the A c a d e m i c Honor Code Council to h a v e these records destroyed. The records of a student who h a s been e x p e l l e d for a violation of the Code will r e m a i n in the file for three y e a r s , after which they will be destroyed.

Staley Series Begins

by Sarah Eberhard On Wednesday and Thrusday, April 8 and 9 Dr. Calvin Miller will be presenting a series of lectures on Hope's campus in connection with the Staley Distinguished Christian Scholar Lecture P r o g r a m . He will be s p e a k i n g at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday on "The Mind of a Servant" in Winants Auditorium and at 9:00 p.m. on the same day at I n t e r v a r s i t y C h r i s t i a n Fellowship on "The Character of a Servant" in Maas Auditorium.

On Thursday, he will be lecturing on "The Discipline of a Servant" at 11:00 a . m . in W i n a n t s Auditorium. Each lecture is open to all who wish to attend.

Dr. Miller is the author of sixteen books, both fiction and non-fiction which include The Singer, The Song, The Finale, The Taste of Joy, A Hunger For Meaning, and his newest book, Fred 'n' E r m a . A graduate of Oklahoma Baptist University, with a B.S. Degree and of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree and a Doctor of Ministry degree, he is currently pastor of Westside Church in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Staley Distinguished Scholar Series began in the fail of 1969 and is supported by the Thomas F. Staley Foundation.

The foundation firmly believes that ''the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ when proclaimed in its historic fullness is always contemporary and relevant to any g e n e r a t i o n . " F o r t h i s reason, the Foundation desires to place on college and university campuses in America, Christian Scholars who can communicate clearly the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Dr. Miller will seek to do just that on Hope's campus on April 8 and 9.
