A positive self-concept provides t h e p e r s o n w i t h f r e e d o m to involve h i m s e l f with o t h e r s a n d t h e d e s i r e to love o t h e r p e o p l e , D ^ G r a n b e r g said.

Of g r e a t i m p o r t a n c e in the C h r i s t i a n s e l f - c o n c e p t is the n e e d to p o s s e s s the " f r e e d o m f r o m s e l f - p r e o c c u p a t i o n in o r d e r to a c q u i r e t h e f r u i t s of t h e s p i r i t " to be a C h r i s t - l i k e p e r s o n d i r e c t e d a n d r e l a t e d to t h e w o r l d a n d its people, h e a d d e d .

But p e o p l e a r e p l a g u e d by a t e n d e n c y to f i n d t h e s o u r c e of t h e i r m e r i t , t h e s o u r c e w h i c h ultimately forms their self-concept, within t h e m s e l v e s .

"This traps p e o p l e in m o r a l i s m — a s y s t e m of self-righteousness," he said.

T h i s w e e k e n d the half - million d o l l a r W i n d m i l l I s l a n d will be dedi c a t e d by P r i n c e B e r n h a r d of the Netherlands.

T h e island is a r e c o n s t r u c t i o n of 18th c e n t u r y Dutch l a n d s c a p e with t h e 125-foot w i n d m i l l being t h e p r i m a r y building. The windmill will be t h e t a l l e s t s t r u c t u r e in Western Michigan.

This 200 - y e a r old windmill, named "De Zwaan" or "The S w a n , " will be a c o m p l e t e l y f u n c tional w i n d m i l l . A m i l l e r f r o m t h e N e t h e r l a n d s will s u p e r v i s e t o u r s

of t h e windmill a n d a l s o t h e g r i n d ing of flour w h i c h wil be sold to t h e t o u r i s t s . A wind of 11 to 15 m p h is n e c e s s a r y to o p e r a t e t h e mill, a n d at this s p e e d t h e t w o t o n s t o n e s will g r i n d a p p r o x i m a t e l y 1500 p o u n d s of f l o u r p e r h o u r .

W a l l a c e ' s a t t i t u d e is c e r t a i n l y evid e n c e of t h e i n j u s t i c e t h a t still e x i s t s in t h e South today.

And a l t h o u g h r e c e n t d e m o n s t r a tions h a v e i l l u s t r a t e d t h e discontent of the N e g r o and indignation to his s u b o r d i n a t e role, t h e tone in the Smith is still opposed to c h a n g e and c o n c e r n e d with c o n s e r v i n g t h e past. ft c a n he s a i d , h o w e v e r , t h a t t h e Southern white a t i i t u d e is nut p u r e ly s e g r e g a t i o n i s t — - m a n y a r e not opposed to s e r v i n g N e g r o s a t lunch c o u n t e r s or at s e r v i c e s t a t i o n s — but the p r e s s u r e s of c o n f o r m i t y and t h e f e a r of being o s t r a c i z e d f r o m society l e a v e s m a n y w h i t e s no choice but to c o m p l y with t h e "group."

Talladega, a small rural comm u n i t y e a s t of B i r m i n g h a m , exe m p l i f i e s s u c h a t t i t u d e s and p r e s s u r e s of s t r i c t s e g r e g a t i o n . Although the N e g r o c o m p r i s e s o v e r one-third of T a l l a d e g a ' s population. he KS totally s e p a r a t e d f r o m all town a c t i v i t y . Likewise, Tall a d e g a College, an a l l - N e g r o school m a k e s little c o n t a c t with t h e w h i t e community excepting economic transactions.

In t h e s p h e r e of e c o n o m i c s , t h e N e g r o h a s potentially the m o s t f r e e d o m and m a y buy in w h i t e b u s i n e s s e s a s long a s he a v o i d s l i n g e r i n g or s i t t i n g down. " S i t t i n g with N e g r o s in public p l a c e s is prohibited in T a l l a d e g a as " m i n g l ing of the r a c e s . " The e l e m e n t a r y and s e c o n d a r y schools a r e s e g r e g a t e d a s well a s public institutions for t h e blind a n d d e a f . M i x i n g of souls in city c e m e t a r i e s is a l s o c i r c u m s c r i b - x l by law.

T h e r e is a S o u t h e r n ideology which c o n t e n d s t h a t s e g r e g a t i o n is a " b e n e v o l e n t " institution protecting the i n t e r e s t s of the N e g r o .

And, of c o u r s e , the N e g r o is " h a p p y " living u n d e r this institution. a n d is only s t i r r e d up by outsiders. Communists, the NAACP or o t h e r "subversives" that question segregation and the right n e s s of conditions. T h e f a s t t h a t initiation p r a c t i c e s h a v e to be c o n f i n e d to the b a s e m e n t is t h e best thing t h a t e v e r h a p p e n e d to initiation. Now t h e a c t i v i t i e s of initiation will be k e p t inside the f r a t e r n i t i e s and controlled by the I P C . I get the i e e l i n g t h a t t h e a u t h o r is d i s a p p o i n t e d b e c a u s e t h e last i n f o r m a l initiation s u c c e e d e d without v i o l a t i o n s w h i c h h e is c o n v i n c e d did o c c u r .

Until t h e a u t h o r c a n s t a t e t h e s e v i o l a t i o n s , I r e s e n t the i m p l i c a t i o n — t h a t t h e f r a t e r n i t i e s got a w a y with b r e a k i n g rules — for I was d i r e c t l y involved in t h e o r g a n i z a tion a n d e x e c u t i o n of m y f r a t e r n ity's informal initiation which s u c c e e d e d w i t h o u t a b u s e s or r u l e violations!

The author's view—that the stringent punishments highlight t h e f a c t t h a t v i o l a t o r s will not be p u n i s h e d — i s i r r a t i o n a l . It is m o r e probable that these punishments h a v e b e e n e f f e c t i v e in r e d u c i n g violations because they are so severe.

I w o u l d like to s e c o n d the I P C ' s i n v i t a t i o n t o the a u t h o r to visit I P C m e e t i n g s a n d in t h a t w a y l e a r n m o r e of w h a t h e ' s t a l k i n g about.

H o w e v e r , it w o u l d g . v e e q u a l t i m e to all c a n u i d a t e s a n d would give the class additiona t i m e to c o n s i d e r t h e i r c h o i c e .
