Dr. Weller Will Give Last Chance Talk Tonight Dr. K e n n e t h Weller h a s b e e n c h o s e n b y M o r t a r B o a r d to p r e sent the a n n u a l L a s t C h a n c e T a l k tonight i n D i m n e n t M e m o r i a l Chapel. His t o p i c will be " T h e A n a t o m y of C h o i c e . " O r . Weller will s p e a k u n d e r t h e traditional a s s u m p t i o n that this is his " l a s t c h a n c e " to s a y w h a t he d e e m s m o s t i m p o r t a n t to t h e s t u d e n t s of H o p e C o l l e g e . In a d d i t i o n to Dr. W e l l e r ' s s p e e c h , the c h a p e l will be the site f o r the Blue K e y h o n o r f r a t e r n i t y ' s a n n o u n c e m e n t of new m e m b e r s f r o m the c l a s s of 1 9 6 9 . Dr. Weller r e c e i v e d his B . A . deg r e e f r o m H o p e a n d h i s Ph.D. f r o m the U n i v e r s i t y of M i c h i g a a He has taughtat Hopesince 1949, d u r i n g w h i c h time he h a s s e r v e d a s A s s i s t a n t to the P r e s i d e n t , a s sistant football coach and coordin a t o r of the l o c a l M a n a g e m e n t Institute. D r . Weller s p e n t the s u m m e r of 1 9 6 5 t e a c h i n g in the g r a d u a t e p r o g r a m of t h e I n t e r a m e r i c a n U n i v e r s i t y of P u e r t o Rico. In a d d i t i o n , he h a s w r i t t e n a b o o k entitled " S e l e c t e d R e a d i n g s in t h e E c o n o m i c s of E n t e r p r i s e . " T h e m e m b e r s of Mortar B o a r d w h o c h o s e Dr. Weller as the s p e a k er, feel that his m o s t o u t s t a n d i n g q u a l i f i c a t i o n is that "he is a stimulating professor and a concerned human being."

The Western M i c h i g a n chapter of the A m e r i c a n Civil L i b e r t i e s U n i o n h a s received no response to its letter to the A d m i n i s t r a t i o n of H o p e College r e q u e s t i n g a meeti n g a n d p l a n s to s e n d a n o t h e r in the next few d a y s , a c c o r d i n g to S t a n l e y J u n a s , c h a i r m a n of the chapter Church-State committee. Mr. J u n a s r e i t e r a t e d last Wedn e s d a y t h a t if n o r e p l y w a s obt a i n e d to the s e c o n d letter, the A C L U w o u l d p u r s u e its a i m s t h r o u g h legal m e a n s . " A c c o r d i n g to b o t h the f e d e r a l a n d state constitutions, the g o v e r n m e n t c a n n o t e n g a g e in the p r o m o t i o n of r e l i g i o n . T h i s , h o w e v e r , is w h a t t a k e s p l a c e w h e n s t u d e n t s a r e f o r c e d to w o r s h i p at a n institution partially supported by public f u n d s . Mr. J u n a s , h o w e v e r , a s s e r t s t h a t c h a p e l is o n l y a s m a l l p a r t of the A C L U o b j e c t i o n " H o p e College is a r e l i g i o u s l y - o r i e n t e d c o l l e g e a n d t h e r e f o r e is not entitled to p u b l i c f u n d s , " he s a i d . H e cited religious courses as addit i o n a l e v i d e n c e of H o p e ' s r e l i g i o n orientation. "IT SEEMS," said Mr. Heimer, " t h a t the A d m i n i s t r a t i o n f e e l s t h a t t h e Blue R i b b o n C o m m i t t e e ' s p l a n r e m o v e s the necessity f o r a meeting. T h a t p l a n m i g h t t a k e the c u r s e off the r e q u i r e m e n t . But it still d o e s not t a k e the p r e s s u r e off freshmen and s o p h o m o r e s . " Mr. J u n a s a g r e e d . "I d o not think that the 2 1 0 0 P l a n conf o r m s t o the l a w of the l a n d . T h e e l e m e n t of c o m p u l s i o n is still present."
