ACCORDING TO t h e proposal, t h e H u m a n R i g h t s C o u n cil, w n o s e f u n c t i o n will be " t o be sensitive and r e s p o n s i v e t o t h e s p o k e n a n d u n s p o k e n n e e d s of t h e c a m p u s c o m m u n i t y r e l a t i n g t o human r e l a t i o n s , " will be c o m p o s e d of f o u r blacks, f o u r w h i t e s and one foreign representative.
These members, appointed by t h e Dean of A c a d e m i c A f f a i r s b e f o r e May 1 of e a c h y e a r , will " s e r v e f r o m J u l y 1 t o J u n e 3 0 of the following calender year." Also i n c l u d e d in the s t a t e m e n t were t h e a p p o i n t m e n t of t w o black s t u d e n t s t o the S t u d e n t Judicial B o a r d , t h e a d d i t i o n of o n e black m e m b e r t o t h e S t u d e n t Standing and Appeals C o m m i t t e e , the review b y t h e S t u d e n t J u d i c i a l Board of t h e t w o b l a c k s ' suspensions, and an o p e n h e a r i n g o n t h e F e b . 1 1 i n c i d e n t involving the t w o black s t u d e n t s by the S t u d e n t Judical Board. O N M A R C H 16 t h e A d A B , a c t i n g on t h e s t a t e m e n t , r e f e r r e d the r e q u e s t f o r a " m i n i m u m of t w o black s t u d e n t m e m b e r s o n the Judicial B o a r d " t o t h e C a m pus Life Board w h i c h e s t a b l i s h e d the J u d i c i a l B o a r d . In this m e e t i n g the A d A B also e s t a b l i s h e d the Ad Hoc C o m m i t t e e t o work out the " p u r p o s e s and s t r u c t u r e s " of t h e H u m a n Rights Council.

R E S P O N D I N G TO the referral of the A d A B c o n c e r n i n g t h e res t r u c t u r i n g of t h e S t u d e n t J u d i c i a l Board, t h e C L B a p p r o v e d t h e addition of t w o black s t u d e n t s t o the B o a r d f o r t h e r e m a i n d e r of the s c h o o l year. S u b s e q u e n t app o i n t m e n t s o n the r e c o m m e n d a tion of t h e C L B by Liggett w e r e L o r r a i n e Price and La D o n n e Johnson. Since the revision of its s t r u c t u r e , t h e S t u d e n t Judicial Board has agreed t o w i t h d r a w its r e c o m m e n d a t i o n to t h e S t u d e n t S t a n d ing a n d A p p e a l s C o m m i t t e e f o r t h e s u s p e n s i o n of t h e t w o black students. ON A P R I L 16 t h e S t u d e n t Judicial Board met in an o p e n hearing t o hear t h e case and suspension charges against t h e t w o black s t u d e n t s . O n e of the black s t u d e n t s a p p e a r e d and pleaded inn o c e n t t o the c h a r g e s . T h e o t h e r s t u d e n t could n o t a p p e a r since h e had n o t r e t u r n e d f r o m spring vacation. The Student Judicial Board met again y e s t e r d a y t o hear f u r t h e r e v i d e n c e o n t h e charges.

" T h u s s p e a k s Dr. C l a r e n c e D e G r a a f o n o n e of his f a v o r i t e issues: not t h e " h i p p y m o v e m e n t , " b u t t h e p r o c e s s of education. A P R O F E S S O R O F English since 1928, D e G r a a f has w i t n e s s e d m a n y c h a n g e s in his 4 2 y e a r s at H o p e , and is p a r t i c u l a r l y interested in c h a n g e s in s t u d e n t attit u d e s a n d r e c e n t t r e n d s in e d u c a tion. " E d u c a t i o n in t h e large university is a s e l l - o u t , " D e G r a a f says. " B e c a u s e j o b s in t h e g o v e r n m e n t and o t h e r areas r e q u i r e specializat i o n , t h e ' m u l t i v e r s i t y , ' w i t h its vast degree of s p e c i a l i z a t i o n , t u r n s o u t s t u d e n t s that are c o m p e t e n t in a very l i m i t e d a r e a , p r e p a r i n g t h e m f o r s p e c i f i c t a s k s in s o c i e t y w i t h o u t p r o v i d i n g a basic f o u n d a tion. " T H E P R E S S U R E ON men to specialize has m a d e a liberal arts e d u c a t i o n a l u x u r y . M o r e and m o r e m e n are receiving t e c h n i c a l e d u c a t i o n s instead of liberal arts b e c a u s e of p r o f e s s i o n a l d e m a n d s , and this is w h y w e ' r e b e g i n n i n g t o have m o r e w o m e n in liberal a r t s t h a n m e n . Liberal a r t s has b e c o m e ' f e m i n i z e d , ' while t h e m e n have gone to the multiversity." T h e s p e c i a l i z a t i o n of t h e m u l t i v e r s i t y , as D e G r a a f sees it, has had a d e h u m a n i z i n g e f f e c t o n college s t u d e n t s a n d is t h e s o u r c e of m u c h of t o d a y ' s c a m p u s d i s s e n t . " T h e i n d i v i d u a l has b e e n lost in t h e s y s t e m . He has lost his h u m a n c o n t a c t s on the c a m p u s , and now he is rebelling against t h i s " m a c h i n e e d u c a t i o n , " D e G r a a f says. AFTER GRADUATING from Calvin College in 1 9 2 1 , D e G r a a f became principal of Holland C h r i s t i a n High S c h o o l . H e held this p o s i t i o n f o r seven y e a r s and t h e n b e c a m e a m e m b e r of t h e H o p e College f a c u l t y . I n i t i a l l y ,
DeGraaf supervised student teach ing in t h e n o w - d e f u n c t H o p e College P r e p a r a t o r y S c h o o l , b u t s o o n b e c a m e involved in t h e English program. T h i s was a t u r n - a b o u t f r o m his u n d e r g r a d u a t e work at Calvin, w h e r e he m a j o r e d in c h e m i s t r y . "I gave s o m e English classes while 1 was at H o l l a n d C h r i s t i a n , " De G r a a f recalls, " a n d 1 f o u n d t h a t this discipline was m u c h m o r e m e a n i n g f u l t o me t h a n s c i e n c e o r m a t h e m a t i c s . In English class we asked t h e right questions-the b r o a d q u e s t i o n s of h u m a n purpose and r e s p o n s i b i l i t y .
e d u c a t i o n in science a n d m a t h e m a t i c s b e c a u s e he feels t h a t it is a valid p a r t of t h e " b r o a d a c a d e m i c b a s e " that every w e l l - e d u c a t e d p e r s o n needs. HIS P O S T - G R A D U A T E w o r k in English was, h o w e v e r , far m o r e e n j o y a b l e . F o r a p e r i o d of t e n years, DeGraaf alternated his t e a c h i n g of c o m p o s i t i o n and E n g lish l i t e r a t u r e with s u m m e r g r a d u a t e w o r k at t h e U n i v e r s i t y of Michigan, receiving his d o c t o r a t e in 1 9 4 7 . Understandably, DeGraaf is concerned about the gradual c h a n g e in e m p h a s i s f r o m h u m a n i ties t o the sciences at H o p e College. " A f t e r World War II, t h e shift in e m p h a s i s b e c a m e very noticeable." DeGraaf explains. (Continued on page 6, column 4)
