T h e b o a r d a l s o decided to und e r t a k e a s t u d y of t h e f e a s i b i l i t y of e s t a b l i s h i n g a " s t u d e n t - l e a d e r s h i p " s c h o l a r s h i p p r o g r a m t o replace the p r e s e n t p o l i c y of p a y i n g student leaders by s a l a r y .

App r o v a l came after nearly one h o u r of discussion in which M i s s S t e v e n s a n d M i s s B a r k e r particip a t e d while a t t e n d i n g the m e e t i n g a s g u e s t s , a s did s e v e r a l o t h e r black students.

D i s c u s s i o n o p e n e d on the issue with D e a n of S t u d e n t s R o b e r t De Y o u n g e x p l a i n i n g t h a t he h a d rec o m m e n d e d the q u e s t i o n b e t a k e n to the C L B b e c a u s e of the p o s s i b l e legal p r o b l e m s t h a t m i g h t a r i s e if s u c h h o u s i n g were a p p r o v e d . He a l l u d e d to the c u r r e n t c o u r t a c t i o n b e i n g t a k e n in r e g a r d s to a n all b l a c k p r o g r a m at A n t i o c h College. G r a n t i n g special h o u s i n g to b l a c k s t u d e n t s m i g h t be illegal,

Nineteen Chapel Cutters Refused Full Adtnittunre Nineteen H o p e s t u d e n t s will apparently n o t b e p e r m i t t e d to r e g i s t e r next s e m e s t e r b e c a u s e of excessive u n e x c u s e d c h a p e l cuts.

These students h a v e 2 0 or more c h a p e l a b s e n c e s which m a k e s it i m p o s s i b l e f o r them to r e d u c e their n u m b e r to t h e limit of six. According to D e a n of S t u d e n t s R o b e r t De Y o u n g , these 19 h a v e not m a d e a " s e r i o u s a t t e m p t to r e d u c e their n u m b e r of c u t s . " Of the 19, six a r e f r e s h m e n a n d 13 a r e s o p h o m o r e s .

T h r o u g h a letter r e c e n t l y sent b y D e a n De Y o u n g ' s office d a t e d M a y 5, 2 2 s t u d e n t s were notified t h a t t h e y w o u l d n o t be p e r m i t t e d to register u n l e s s they r e d u c e d their n u m b e r of cuts. T h r e e of these students appealed to the D e a n a n d w e r e e x o n e r a t e d f o r various reasons.

N o t i f i c a t i o n of i n d i v i d u a l stud e n t s of the final d e c i s i o n a s to w h e t h e r o r n o t t h e y will b e permitted to r e g i s t e r in the fall will b e m a d e n e x t week after the conc l u s i o n of c h a p e l services.

In a d d i t i o n , s o m e s o r t of a c t i o n will be t a k e n a g a i n s t the a p p r o x i m a t e l y 24 s t u d e n t s w h o will end the s e m e s t e r with t w o o r t h r e e une x c u s e d a b s e n c e s , D e a n De Y o u n g s a i d . What s o r t of a c t i o n will be t a k e n will b e decided b y t h e D e a n a f t e r he h a s " d i s c u s s e d t h e m a t t e r with o t h e r s . " He indicated t h a t t h e s e s t u d e n t s m a y " j u s t b e reprimanded."

Miss B a r k e r t h e n said t h a t the legal p r o b l e m s c o u l d b e e r a d i cated b e c a u s e " w e w a n t a w i n g or c l u s t e r " not s e p a r a t e h o u s i n g .

" It w a s p o i n t e d out b y R o g e r Rietb e r g , the b o a r d ' s c h a i r m a n , t h a t there w a s at t h a t time n o f o r m a l request to be a p p r o v e d .

D u r i n g the next few m i n u t e s Miss B a r k e r , M i s s S t e v e n s a n d guest J o h n B r o w n d r e w u p a s t a t e m e n t of the request. S e v e r a l b o a r d m e m b e r s objected to this s t a t e m e n t b e c a u s e it did n o t specify w h o the g r o u p w a s t h a t w a s b e i n g permitted special h o u s i n g .

S T U D E N T BOARD m e m b e r Ron H o o k t h e n m o v e d t h a t the m o t i o n be t a b l e d a n d t h a t Dr. Brown, Dean D e Y o u n g , Miss B a r k e r a n d B r o w n meet to c l a r i fy the s t a t e m e n t of r e q u e s t a n d present it at the n e x t meeting. T h i s motion was defeated.

Dr. B r o w n t h e n a m e n d e d h i s m o t i o n to i n c l u d e the n a m e s of Miss S t e v e n s a n d Miss B a r k e r t o m a k e his m o t i o n m o r e specific a n d the m o t i o n w a s then p a s s e d .

Thomas Donia To Head anchor Staff Next Year

Committee System Gets Mixed Reactions

" O v e r a l l , it h a s w o r k e d q u i t e well," s a i d D e a n for A c a d e m i c A f f a i r s M o r r e t t e Rider. " S o m e things, h o w e v e r , h a v e to b e c l e a n e d u p , " he a d d e d .

"SOME C O M M I T T E E S h a v e d o n e little this y e a r , w h i l e o t h e r s h a v e been v e r y a c t i v e , " the D e a n noted.

Dr. J o h n H o l l e n b a c h , w h o h e a d ed the c o m m i t t e e which d r e w u p the new s t r u c t u r e a y e a r a g o , said that "We fiave a viable s y s t e m . T h e w e a k n e s s lies in the difficulty of c a r r y i n g t h r o u g h o n it." " O n e of the difficulties is t h a t it is i n t r i c a t e , " he s a i d , b u t without this " y o u b e g i n to m o v e toward a more authoritarian structure."

H o o k s a i d " a lot of p e o p l e d o n ' t u n d e r s t a n d the structure a m o n g the students, faculty a n d 'administration. You h e a r q u e s t i o n s in m e e t i n g s like ' Is this in o u r d o m a i n ? ' a n d ' W h e r e d o e s this g o n e x t ? ' " Dr. R i d e r w o u l d like to see the c r e a t i o n of a c o m m i t t e e o n i n n o vation. This committee would " t a k e n e w i d e a s a n d feed t h e m i n t o the s t r u c t u r e . " DR. H O L L E N B A C H s a i d t h a t h e t h o u g h t the w o r k of the c o m mittees w o u l d b e i m p r o v e d if t h e y h a d m o r e open meetings when faced with a c o n t r o v e r s i a l ' p r o blem.

Liggett s a i d t h a t t h e r e w a s a need f o r g r e a t e r s t u d e n t r e p r e s e n t a t i o n o n a n u m b e r of the boards and committees, part i c u l a r l y o n the S t u d e n t C o n d u c t , Cultural Affairs and ' Extrac u r r i c u l a r Activities c o m m i t t e e s .

D y k e v a n l ^ t t e n . Dr. E v a V a n S c h a a c k a n d Rev. William Hilmert.

D R . S C H R I E R joined the H o p e College f a c u l t y in 1 9 3 9 , h a v i n g completed his u n d e r g r a d u a t e a n d M a s t e r ' s w o r k at the U n i v e r s i t y of Michigan. He w a s a w a r d e d the Ph.D. f r o m the U n i v e r s i t y of M i c h i g a n in 1 9 4 5 . Dr. Schrier is the a u t h o r of n u m e r o u s publications, the m o s t recent of which is " W i n n i n g H o p e College O r a t i o n s , 1941-1966."

He served f o r m a n y y e a r s as c h a i r m a n of the speech d e p a r t ment d u r i n g which time H o p e College o r a t o r s u n d e r his direction repeatedly won n a t i o n a l hono r s . P'or s e v e r a l y e a r s he filled a t e a c h i n g a s s i g n m e n t f o r the a r m e d forces in v a r i o u s s t a t i o n s in the Orient.

Hope Is To Purchase New Apartment House

If a c c e p t a b l e f i n a n c i n g is f o u n d , final a p p r o v a l of the p u r c h a s e must be given b y the B o a r d of Trustees. C l a r e n c e H a n d l o g t e n , T r e a s u r e r a n d Director of Business Affairs r e p o r t e d that " w e hope to h a v e a c c e p t a b l e f i n a n c i n g for B o a r d a c t i o n when they meet May 2 8 a n d 2 9 .

The College is d i s c u s s i n g fin a n c i n g possibilities with s e v e r a l western M i c h i g a n b a n k s . Most s t u d e n t s interviewed d o not feel that they a r e a part of the college c o m m u n i t y b e c a u s e of their lack of contact past the academic.

BEHIND THE LACK of interest in this g r o u p of s t u d e n t s lies one m a j o r f a c t o r , the g e n e r a l n o n - i n v o l v e m e n t of these s t u d e n t s in the n o n - a c a d e m i c life of the College. A l t h o u g h non-involvement is the rule, m a n y o f f - c a m p u s s t u d e n t s a r e active p a r t i c i p a n t s in all aspects of college life.

H o w e v e r , the m a j o r i t y of offc a m p u s s t u d e n t s interviewed did not p a r t i c i p a t e in social events on c a m p u s except for a t t e n d a n c e at b a s k e t b a l l and football g a m e s .

S i m i l a r l y these students a r e not deeply i n v o l v e d in c a m p u s cont r o v e r s i e s or c a m p u s politics.

Most did not vote in the recent c a m p u s elections.

" H o w e v e r , " Mr. Dirkse s a i d , "it w o u l d be u n wise to limit the o f f - c a m p u s p r o g r a m to just o n e c o m m u n i t y . " The education department would like to establish an offc a m p u s p r o g r a m in either Musk e g o n or G r a n d R a p i d s to a f f o r d e d u c a t i o n s t u d e n t s the o p p o r tunity to w o r k in s u b u r b a n a n d inner-city a r e a s .

THIS ELEMENT, termed " J o h n B i r c h e r s a n d their s y m p a t h i z e r s " b y Dr. C r a w f o r d , h a s said t h a t instilling a positive selfconcept in a ch ild is not the p r o p e r function of a s c h o o l . T H E P L A N WAS i n a u g u r a t e d after present c h a i r m a n Dr. Robert W. C a v a n a u g h a s k e d to be relieved of his a d m i n i s t r a t i v e duties in o r d e r to accept a full-time role in t e a c h i n g . Dr. C a v a n a u g h h a s been c h a i r m a n of the d e p a r t m e n t since 1947.

T h e m u s i c d e p a r t m e n t is the second d e p a r t m e n t at H o p e College to a d o p t a r o t a t i n g c h a i r m a n s h i p plan. T h e c h e m i s t r y dep a r t m e n t initiated a s i m i l a r p l a n at the b e g i n n i n g of last year .

M R RITSEMA, a 1956 g r a d u ate of H o p e , is c u r r e n t l y c o m pleting w o r k on his d o c t o r a t e at the U n i v e r s i t y of M i c h i g a n . Before j o i n i n g the H o p e faculty in 1967, he w a s a m e m b e r of the P o r t a g e High S c h o o l faculty in Portage, Mich., a n d an a s s i s t a n t p r o f e s s o r of music at Wisconsin State University at O s h k o s h .

Dr. C a v a n a u g h e a r n e d h i s B . A . f r o m the University of Wisconsin in 1 9 3 7 , his B.Mus. a n d M.Mus. f r o m the A m e r i c a n C o n s e r v a t o r y of Music in 1 9 3 9 a n d 1 9 4 0 , respectively, a n d his Ed.D. in Music f r o m the U n i v e r s i t y of Michi g a n in 1953. He j o i n e d the H o p e faculty in 1940.

W H I L E DR. C A V A N A U G H h a s been c h a i r m a n , the m u s i c department has grown from a faculty of f o u r h o u s e d in o d d rooms in C o l u m b i a C o t t a g e , V o o r h e e s Hall a n d the g r o u n d f l o o r of the C h a p e l , to its present staff of twelve full-time a n d n u m e r o u s p a r t - t i m e faculty m e m b e r s w h o w o r k in ci music building.

H O M E S W E E T H O M E — S o p h o m o r e J e r r y S w i e r e n g a finds that s t u d y ing at h o m e c a n h a v e its m i n o r irritants. M a n y s t u d e n t s w h o live off c a m p u s feel themselves to be o u t s i d e of the H o p e c o m m u n i t y .

For First Time College To Number Over 2000 Next year's freshman class p r o m i s e s to be v e r y s i m i l a r to the present f r e s h m a n class a n d will likely push H o p e ' s e n r o l l m e n t o v e r 2 , 0 0 0 for the first time.

C h a r l e s C u r r y , Director of Adm i s s i o n s , said final statistics cannot be given a s yet, but there will be a p p r o x i m a t e l y 5 7 5 new freshmen.

Like this y e a r , there will be m o r e w o m e n t h a n m e n . The perc e n t a g e o f t h e c l a s s f r o m Reformed C h u r c h b a c k g r o u n d s will be a p p r o x i m a t e l y 4 5 percent. A b o u t 5 5 percent of the f r e s h m e n will c o m e f r o m outside M i c h i g a n .

Need for a Cop

H E C U R R E N T C O M P L E X system of b o a r d s a n d committees which f o r m s the h e a r t of d e c i s i o n - m a k i n g at H o p e College is p r e s e n d y c o m p l e t i n g its first y e a r of o p e r a t i o n . T h i s system h a s been l a r g e l y successful, especially in light of the inherent p r o b l e m s in t r y i n g to w o r k with s o m e t h i n g c o m p l e x for the first time.

T h e s y s t e m leaves, h o w e v e r , a g o o d deal ol r o o m for i m p r o v e m e n t .

There a r e t h r e e a r e a s that h a v e been especially u n s a t i s f a c t o r y this y e a r . T h e y a r e the m e a n s of c o m m u n i c a t i o n between, to, a n d from c o m m i t t e e s , the l a c k o f u n d e r s t a n d i n g a s to w h o m exactly b e a r s the dec i s i o n - m a k i n g r e s p o n s i b i l i t y f o r specific p r o p o s a l s a n d the s o m e t i m e s i n o r d i n a t e l y slow a n d n o n - r e s p o n s i v e m o v e m e n t oi prop o s a l s t h r o u g h the s y s t e m .

T w o m i n o r c h a n g e s to i m p r o v e the system have recently been offered by c a m p u s l e a d e r s . D e a n Morrette R i d e r ' s 1 1 innovative c o m m i t t e e " would m a k e the system m o r e r e s p o n s i v e to new i d e a s in b o t h the social a n d a c a d e m i c r e a l m s of c a m p u s life. S t u d e n t C o n g r e s s President T i m U g g e t t ' s p r o p o s a l that m o r e s t u d e n t s be a d d e d to certain c o m m i t t e e s , which is now b e f o r e the A d m i n i s t r a t i v e A f f a i r s B o a r d , will help i m p r o v e d e c i s i o n - m a k i n g in a r e a s of vital student c o n c e r n . A l t h o u g h the present c o m m i t t e e s t r u c t u r e is prog r e s s i v e in the a m o u n t oi student particip a t i o n b y c o m p a r i s o n to other s c h o o l s , the c o m m i t t e e s listed in U g g e t t ' s p r o p o s a l would benefit from m o r e student m e m b e r s .

We would like to put forth a n o t h e r suggestion f o r i m p r o v i n g the present committee s y s t e m , a s u g g e s t i o n that would help alleviate t h o s e s h o r t c o m i n g s of the system listed a b o v e . We p r o p o s e that a " t r a f f i c c o p " be f o u n d to a d m i n i s t e r the c o m m i t t e e s t r u c t u r e . T h e p e r s o n w h o a s s u m e s this position s h o u l d b e s o m e o n e in the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n , p e r h a p s the new Associate D e a n for A c a d e m i c A f f a i r s .

F o u r m a i n responsibilities would fall to this p e r s o n . F o r one, this " t r a f f i c c o p " would s e r v e a s a c h a n n e T f o r all new proposals to enter the c o m m i t t e e structure. H e would l a k e p r o p o s a l s from students, faculty a n d a d m i n i s t r a t o r s a n d place them in the p r o p e r committee. S t u d e n t s a n d faculty would t h u s not need be f a m i l i a r with the s t r u c t u r e in o r d e r to see t h a t a p r o p o s a l find its w a y to the p r o p e r committee.

N A D D I T I O N , T H I S administrator would k e e p the entire structure r u n n i n g s m o o t h l y . H e w o u l d act a s p a r l i a m e n t a r i a n for the s y s t e m , s e t d i n g

q u e s t i o n s of w h e r e r e s p o n s i b i l i t y lies a n d where a c e r t a i n p r o p o s a l s h o u l d g o . H e would p r o m p t c o m m i t t e e s to meet m o r e often when their a g e n d a w a s full a n d would serve to see t h a t all p r o p o s a l s or recommendations would m o v e q u i c k l y either u p o r d o w n in the system.

Our " t r a f f i c c o p " w o u l d a l s o serve a s the c o m m i t t e e s t r u c t u r e ' s public r e l a t i o n s m a n , m a k i n g k n o w n to s t u d e n t a n d faculty all decisions of r e l e v a n c e to them.

Student Cutters T h e news r e p o r t e d o n p a g e one t h a t 19 s t u d e n t s will p r o b a b l y not be permitted to register next fall b e c a u s e of excessive c h a p e l cuts is v e r y d i s h e a r t e n i n g .

This newspaper h a s often s p o k e n a g a i n s t c o m p u l s o r y c h a p e l . We h a v e l o n g contended t h a t c o e r c i o n is not a v a l i d m e t h o d of b r i n g i n g i n d i v i d u a l s closer to C o d . We h a v e a l w a y s believed t h a t freed o m to w o r s h i p — i s a r i g h t which is applic a b l e inside a C h r i s t i a n c o l l e g e c o m m u n i t y .

T h e s e a r g u m e n t s , h o w e v e r , d o not s p e a k to t h c c u r r e n t p r o b l e m . T h e 2 1 0 0 p l a n is the l a w of the College, a n d a s such it v a l i d l y r e q u i r e s student obedience. T h e 19 s t u d e n t s in q u e s t i o n h a v e n o t c o o p e r a t e d at all, a n d thus h a v e o b v i o u s l y decided that they need m a k e n o effort to c o n f o r m to the r e g u l a t i o n s of the College. In the face of such a stance, the C o l l e g e h a s n o real choice other t h a n to tell these students t h a t they m u s t seek their e d u c a t i o n at a n o t h e r institution with a set of r e g u l a t i o n s with which they c a n m o r e easily c o n f o r m .

One t h i n g is e s s e n t i a l , h o w e v e r . T h e C o l l e g e s h o u l d b e n d e v e r y effort to give these s t u d e n t s the time a n d o p p o r t u n i t y to a r r a n g e to c o n t i n u e their college c a r e e r elsewhere. For the men on the list, a p a u s e in their college e d u c a t i o n c a n m e a n imm e d i a t e i n d u c t i o n into the a r m e d services, a n e v e n t u a l i t y which c a r r i e s a risk which is not w a r r a n t e d b y a t h o u s a n d c h a p e l cuts.

M A N Y S T U D E N T S W H O c o m e to H o p e encounter their first experience with black students. It is u n f o r t u n a t e that they meet black s t u d e n t s at s u c h a late stage, because it seems to e m p h a s i z e to them a certain u n k n o w n difference between b l a c k s a n d whites which is false—and I m a i n t a i n does not exist. What better o p p o r t u n i t y is there for b l a c k s and whites to learn a b o u t one a n o t h e r a n d b r i d g e the g a p of difference c a u s e d by_ u n e d u e a t i o n , t h a n b y living together? By a s k i n g for s e p a r a t e h o u s i n g you a r e d e n y i n g the g o a l that we c a n live together, not just on H o p e ' s c a m p u s , but in the w o r l d .

Why must y o u e m p h a s i z e a difference which is only skin deep a n d create m o r e obstacles for b l a c k s a n d whites t o g e t h e r ?

H o w a r e we to u n d e r s t a n d one a n o t h e r , to a p p r e c i a t e one a n o t h e r ' s similar g o a l s a n d interests if there is to be n o contact with b l a c k s a n d whites t o g e t h e r ?

As the theme of one float last fall r e a d , " A T i m e F o r A C h a n g e , " the time h a s c o m e to r e e v a l u a t e this aspect of Homecoming.

T H U S . T H E T H E M E for o u r next H o m e c o m i n g will be " C o m e See A b o u t U s — H o p e College 1 9 6 9 . " While m a i n t a i n i n g most of w h a t is a p a r t of Homec o m i n g we h o p e to a d d a new d i m e n s i o n to it. On the S a t u r d a y m o r n i n g in place of a p a r a d e , we h o p e to open the College to a l u m n i and friends a n d let them see w h a t H o p e students a n d faculty a r e d o i n g t o d a y .

SDS 'Cleans Up'

by Art B u c h w a l d The Students for a Democratic Society ( S D S ) h a v e u r g e d their m e m b e r s to get their hair cut, s h a v e off their b e a r d s a n d s i d e b u r n s a n d infiltrate the b u s i n e s s comm u n i t y this s u m m e r . The idea is to foment revolution off the c a m p u s .

SOME B U S I N E S S M E N A R E fearful of the results of such a n infiltration. But I think the SDS is t a k i n g a bigger c h a n c e t h a n business. It's one t h i n g to stick to y o u r ideals on a c a m p u s with 5 0 or 60 other students g i v i n g y o u s u p p o r t , but it's another to g o off all a l o n e into the business world a n d keep f r o m being corrupted.

B e a r i n g in m i n d that m o s t m e m b e r s of SDS are u s u a l l y the b r i g h t e r students, let's g o to the Flipper D e p a r t m e n t Store where B a r n e y Longstreet, a n SDS leader, h a s m a n a g e d to get a j o b as a t r a i n e e in the m e n ' s c l o t h i n g d e p a r t m e n t . F o r a start, B a r n e y h a s been sticking pictures of Che G u e v a r a in the suits h a n g i n g on the racks—a s m a l l thing, but as M a o Tsetung s a y s , " A r e v o l u t i o n a r y must work in the pocket of m o s t r e s i s t a n c e . " B A R N E Y D O E S T H I S E A R L Y in the m o r n i n g . Since he is a l w a y s the first one there, the m e n ' s clothing b u y e r is v e r y impressed with him a n d one d a y a n n o u n c e s that he is elevating B a r n e y f r o m his t r a i n e e position to full s a l e s m a n .

This s u r p r i s e a p p o i n t m e n t leaves B a r n e y unsettled, a s he w a n t s to p u r s u e the life of the lowliest e m p l o y e e to get the feel of what it is like to be exploited b y the capitalist system. Rather t h a n reveal his true identity, B a r n e y accepts the p r o m o tion.

His c h a n c e s of f o m e n t i n g r e v o l u t i o n a m o n g the e m p l o y e s a r e limited to lunch a n d s m o k i n g b r e a k s , and when B a r n e y tells the e m p l o y e s w h a t a l o u s y deal they h a v e at Flipper's, he a t t r a c t s a l a r g e a u d ience.

Stricken with fear that he is selling out, B a r n e y h a n d s in a list of r e f o r m s which he s a y s the store m u s t a g r e e to b e f o r e h e t a k e s the job. These include F l i p p e r ' s Department Store getting involved in the c o m m u n i t y , d o n a t i n g part of its profits to the e m p l o y e s and setting u p a n A f r o - A m e r i c a n clothing boutique.

These d e m a n d s a r e sent u p to the president of Flipper's, a n d after r e a d i n g them he s a y s , " W h y d i d n ' t we think of this first?

I d o n ' t want Longstreet w o r k i n g a s floor m a n a g e r . He's t o o v a l u a b l e to waste there.

B r i n g him u p to the executive offices."

B A R N E Y IS NOW I N R E A L trouble because, t h a n k s to his d e m a n d s , profits of F l i p p e r ' s a r e u p 3 0 percent, and he is m a d e a vice president in c h a r g e of promotion. He is so b u s y t h i n k i n g u p new ideas that he h a s little time for f o m e n t i n g revolution. In k e e p i n g with his position, he h a s a new a p a r t m e n t , a new c a r and he s p e n d s his e v e n i n g s at First Avenue b a r s meeting airline stewardesses. The revo l u t i o n a r y activity he h a s time for is r e a d ing Marcuse on the L o n g Island R a i l r o a d when he goes to W e s t h a m p t o n for the weekend.

Once, in a m o m e n t of e x t r e m e guilt, B a r n e y sits d o w n on the floor in the president's office to s h o w his d i s d a i n for the system. But when the president and other executives come in, they all j o i n him on the floor a n d they hold a meeting on h o w to increase the store's c h a r g e accounts. The president finds e v e r y o n e so m u c h m o r e relaxed when they sit on the floor that he o r d e r s all the f u r n i t u r e t a k e n out of his office.

AT T H E E N D OF T H E summer B a r n e y is offered his own store, which F l i p p e r ' s is o p e n i n g in Westchester C o u n t y ; a n d since he's too a s h a m e d to g o b a c k to his SDS chapter a n d tell them h e ' s executive vice president of F l i p p e r ' s , he accepts. And s o the Students f o r a D e m o c r a t i c Society lose a n o t h e r g o o d m a n .

T H E T R U T H O F such p r e d i c t i o n s a s a p p l i e d to H o p e d e p e n d s exclusively o n w h e t h e r this institution c a n s i m u l t a n e o u s l y m a i n t a i n excellence in a c a d e m i c s , p r o v i d e d i v e r s i t y a n d m e a n i n g in c a m p u s social a n d c u l t u r a l life, a n d c o n t i n u e t o v i g o r o u s ly p u r s u e the principles of a liberal e d u c a tion in the C h r i s t i a n t r a d i t i o n . T h i s is a tall o r d e r , b u t one o n which the v e r y surv i v a l of H o p e College d e p e n d s .

The u n d e r l y i n g assumption behind f o u r y e a r s of a n c h o r editorial policy h a s been that H o p e C o l l e g e c a n s u r v i v e in the a c a d e m i c w o r l d of 1969. T h e e d i t o r i a l s of this n e w s p a p e r h a v e p r a i s e d t h o s e dev e l o p m e n t s which we felt increased the q u a l i t y of the H o p e College experience and criticized those which we felt i m p e d e d the C o l l e g e ' s p r o g r e s s in a world which a b a n d o n s b y the w a y s i d e institutions which c a n n o t be flexible a n d I n n o v a t i v e .

A N D T H E PAST four years h a v e seen a g r e a t d e a l of p r o g r e s s at H o p e College. T h e f a c u l t y h a s g r o w n t r e m e n d o u s l y in b o t h n u m b e r s a n d q u a l i t y . New d e p a r t ments h a v e been a d d e d , a n d i n n o v a t i v e new c o u r s e s , especially for the c o m i n g semester h a v e been devised. The institution of pass-fail in n o n - r e q u i r e d c o u r s e s w a s a n o t h e r m a j o r recent a d v a n c e m e n t , one in a p a t t e r n of exciting a c a d e m i c achievement which t a k e s a b a c k seat to few A m e r i c a n colleges.

In c a m p u s life and student a f f a i r s , H o p e h a s been m o r e reluctant to m o v e b o l d l y . T h e last f o u r y e a r s , h o w e v e r , h a v e seen a g r a d u a l r e l a x a t i o n of the g r i p of a u t h o r i t a r i a n in l o c o p a r e n t i s policies. T h e life of the coed h a s steadily b e c o m e m o r e t o l e r a b l e , n o t a b l y t h r o u g h the institution of senior k e y s , the l i b e r a l i z a t i o n of c l o s i n g h o u r s a n d the a b a n d o n m e n t of petty d o r m rules. H o p e still h a s a l o n g way to g o b e f o r e its s t u d e n t s a r e permitted to c o m pletely c o n t r o l their n o n - a c a d e m i c lives, but p r o g r e s s in this direction is a s s u r e d l y b e i n g m a d e , step b y p a i n f u l step.

S P I R I T U A L L I F E AT Hope has also m a d e s o m e excellent a d v a n c e s . T h e Student C h u r c h is n o w o n e of H o p e ' s m o s t imp o r t a n t , respected a n d influential s t u d e n t g r o u p s . T h e C h u r c h ' s Coffee G r o u n d s h a s a d d e d a w h o l e new d i m e n s i o n to this

G E O R G E ARWADY c a m p u s a n d the S u n d a y services in Dimnent M e m o r i a l C h a p e l h a v e p r o v i d e d an opp o r t u n i t y for v o l u n t a r y w o r s h i p which did not exist before. The f o u r - y e a r m i n i s t r y of C h a p l a i n William H i l l e g o n d s h a s instilled a v i t a l interest in religion in m u c h of the s t u d e n t b o d y , a n d the College h a s c o n t i n u e d to send s o m e of its finest students e a c h y e a r into the service of the C h u r c h . T h e timely r e f o r m of the c o m pulsory chapel requirement h a s largely r e m o v e d the only aspect of H o p e ' s spiritual p r o g r a m which tended to p r o m o t e resentment r a t h e r t h a n reverence.

T h e last two y e a r s h a v e a l s o seen significant i m p r o v e m e n t s in the s t r u c t u r e of the c a m p u s c o m m u n i t y . Both the new c o m m i t t e e s y s t e m a d o p t e d last y e a r a n d the new s t u d e n t g o v e r n m e n t o r g a n i z a t i o n a p p r o v e d last m o n t h a r e i n n o v a t i o n s with g r e a t potential for i m p r o v i n g the efficiency of d e c i s i o n - m a k i n g at the College. T h e s e a r e b o t h steps in the right direction, but still l a c k i n g is the c o m m u n i t y a s s e m b l y where s t u d e n t s , faculty, a d m i n i s t r a t o r s a n d trustees c a n meet together.

T H E S T U D E N T BODY at H o p e h a s b e c o m e i n c r e a s i n g l y liberal in r e c e n f y c a r s , a n d there is e v e r y indication that the trend

will continue. This is a n o t h e r positive dev e l o p m e n t at H o p e , a s m o r e s t u d e n t s tend to be c o n c e r n e d with m a t t e r s b e y o n d H o p e a n d yet exhibit a m a t u r e d e t e r m i n a t i o n to r u n their own lives. T o a c c o m p a n y this c h a n g e in o u t l o o k on the part of m u c h of the student b o d y is a c o r r e s p o n d i n g liberalization on the p a r t of the faculty a n d B o a r d of Trustees, h i g h l y significant developments which h a v e generally g o n e unnoticed.

All these p r o g r e s s i v e a d v a n c e s at the College d u r i n g the last f o u r y e a r s are exactly the type of c o n t i n u i n g c h a n g e which H o p e needs to attract better new students, d r a w fine y o u n g faculty m e m b e r s to t h e c a m p u s and b u i l d a case to e n c o u r a g e fin a n c i a l c o n t r i b u t i o n s f r o m a l u m n i , the C h u r c h , the g o v e r n m e n t a n d p r i v a t e found a t i o n s . T o g e t h e r these i n n o v a t i o n s constitute the C o l l e g e ' s m a i n h o p e for the f u t u r e a n d its best i n s u r a n c e of c o n t i n u e d excellence in the liberal e d u c a t i o n of its students.

E V E N AS T H I S p r o g r e s s h a s t a k e n place, h o w e v e r , it h a s b e c o m e clear that there a r e three m a j o r r o a d b l o c k s to continued i n n o v a t i o n at H o p e , three p r o b l e m s which must be o v e r c o m e in the next few y e a r s if the College is to c o n t i n u e a n d prosper.

T h e first of these m a j o r p r o b l e m s lies in the lack of established criteria for d e c i s i o n - m a k i n g at H o p e College. T h e r e a r e n o guidelines b e y o n d the g e n e r a l rule that all decisions s h o u l d be m a d e in a c c o r d with the r a t h e r u n d e f i n e d " C h r i s t i a n principles of the C o l l e g e . " T o o often we h a v e seen decisions m a d e without sufficient rationale by individual administrators and committees.

I T IS E S S E N T I A L that o n e or m o r e of the College c o m m i t t e e s turn e a r l y next year to the t a s k of e s t a b l i s h i n g written, concrete policies o u t l i n i n g the principles of the school in g e n e r a l and the specificr e l a t i o n s h i p between the school a n d its s t u d e n t s in p a r t i c u l a r .

A second problem which 1 see d e v e l o p i n g o n the c a m p u s is a belief in a p h i l o s o p h y of c o m m u n i t y which d o e s not permit significant f r e e d o m of dissent.

This p h i l o s o p h y views the College as an integrated c o m m u n i t y in which all members s u b s c r i b e to a certain w o r l d view a n d in which there is unity in both conduct a n d b c l i c i .

T H I S A L L - P E R V A S I V E concept of c o m m u n i t y d o e s not at all c o n f o r m to Hope College reality. T h i s is a c o m m u n i t y , but o n e in which e x t r e m e l y pluralistic elements reside. It w o u l d be a g r a v e m i s t a k e to insist on h o m o g e n e i t y of v a l u e s a n d c o n d u c t when the object of the College is to t r a i n students to successfully p a r t i c i p a t e in the a m a z i n g l y d i v e r s e n a t i o n a l c o m m u n i t y b e y o n d the Pine G r o v e a n d V a n Raalte. The unified c o m m u n i t y a r g u m e n t c a r r i e s the g r e a t d a n g e r of p e r p e t u a t i n g a u t h o r i t a r i a n c o n t r o l o v e r the lives of s t u d e n t s by p o w e r - w i e l d i n g trustees a n d faculty w h o a r e c o m p l e t e l y out of touch with the n o n - a c a d e m i c lives of the students. T h e i n d i v i d u a l , not the c o m m u n i t y , s h o u l d m a k e the decisions which affect that i n d i v i d u a l ' s p e r s o n a l life. The diversified elements in the c o m m u n i t y s h o u l d com e into the d e c i s i o n - m a k i n g p r o c e s s only when c o m m o n a c a d e m i c and c u l t u r a l concerns a r e the subject of d e l i b e r a t i o n . Students s h o u l d r u n s t u d e n t a f f a i r s , a n d all di ver si f i cat i on of b e l i e f a n d c o n d u c t s h o u l d be tolerated which does not u n f a i r l y impinge o n the f r e e d o m of others. A n y t h i n g less is antithetical to the principles of academic f r e e d o m which this college m u s t respect a n d defend if it wishes to r e m a i n a vital a c a d e m i c entity.

T H E T H I R D R O A D B L O C K o n the College's p r o g r e s s i v e p a t h to f u t u r e excellence and si gni f i cance is the p o t e n t i a l d a n g e r that a s h a k y H o p e College b u d g e t m a y tempt the A d m i n i s t r a t i o n a n d B o a r d of T r u s t e e s to s l o w - d o w n or halt i n n o v a tion at the College in o r d e r to s a t i s f y cons e r v a t i v e - l e a n i n g m e m b e r s of the constituency. Such a c t i o n , while p e r h a p s a d d i n g a few pennies t o the college coffers o n the short r u n , w o u l d lead over an extended period of time to the s t a g n a t i o n of the College's i n n o v a t i v e efforts a n d the d e a t h of H o p e College a s a n institution of h i g h e r education.

T h e s e obstacles c a n a n d must be overcome. T h e p r o g r e s s i v e a c c o m p l i s h m e n t s of the p a s t four y e a r s c a n be c o n t i n u e d a n d e x p a n d e d 'in the y e a r s to c o m e , a n d H o p e can rise to a p e r m a n e n t place a m o n g the g r e a t A m e r i c a n liberal a r t s colleges. T h e o p p o r t u n i t y is there; I o n l y h o p e the a n c h o r h a s p u s h e d the College to realize its g r e a t potential, a n d I c a n look f o r w a r d to c o n t i n u e d p r o g r e s s at H o p e a s a n alumnus.

Education: the Central Goal Of Hope

By T o m H i l d e b r a n d t a n c h o r Assistant E d i t o r T h r e e a t t r i b u t e s of H o p e College a r e f r e q u e n t l y described as " t h e t h i n g s that m a k e H o p e C o l l e g e the u n i q u e institution it is." These a r e its " s e n s e of c o m m u n i t y , " its " i n t e r e s t in its s t u d e n t s a s total h u m a n b e i n g s , " a n d its " d u t y to interpret k n o w ledge in the light of C h r i s t i a n p r e c e p t s . " ON T H E S U R F A C E , it seems that a r g u m e n t a g a i n s t these a t t r i b u t e s w o u l d be futile a n d ridiculous. H o w c a n o n e p o s s i b l y o p p o s e " c o m m u n i t y " or "interest in the total h u m a n b e i n g ? " T h e y seem as o b v i o u s l y g o o d to most of u s a s flag, Mother a n d a p p l e pie ( o r Dutch Apple pie).

E D U C A T E D MEN, however, should look b e n e a t h the s u r f a c e , a n d it is at this deeper level that these a p p a r e n t l y g o o d p r o p e r t i e s d o not a p p e a r as flawless as they d o o n the s u r f a c e .

A T T H E O U T S E T , it must be stated that H o p e College is p r i m a r i l y a n educ a t i o n a l institution. H o p e f u l l y it is m o r e t h a n that, b u t it o u g h t to be at least that.

Its p r i n c i p a l p u r p o s e for existence is to impart knowledge—knowledge "interpreted in the light of C h r i s t i a n p r e c e p t s " cert a i n l y , but the e m p h a s i s s h o u l d be o n imp a r t i n g , not i n t e r p r e t a t i o n . A n y t h i n g that interferes with the c o m m u n i c a t i o n o f k n o w ledge h a s n o place at a n e d u c a t i o n a l institution, e v e n a C h r i s t i a n one. ( F o r t h o s e c o n c e r n e d with the a d v a n c e of the F a i t h in t o d a y ' s w o r l d , p e r h a p s that s e n t e n c e s h o u l d r e a d " e s p e c i a l l y in a C h r i s t i a n o n e . " ) O N C E T H I S IS realized, it b e c o m e s clear that the College exists for the benefit o f t h e students. T h i s implies two t h i n g s .

F I R S T , T H E College m u s t d i s p e n s e with the n o t i o n that the faculty is the College. T h i s idea is m e d i e v a l in effect a s well a s in o r i g i n , d o i n g m o r e h a r m t h a n g o o d to the institution. T h e function of the faculty m e m b e r is to teach. If he c a n n o t d o t h a t j o b s a t i s f a c t o r a l l y , he s h o u l d not b e here, r e g a r d l e s s of h o w m u c h e x p e r i e n c e

he h a s or h o w m a n y articles he h a s published.

The o p p o s i t i o n to faculty e v a l u a t i o n , for i n s t a n c e , d o e s not t a k e this into a c c o u n t .

T h e s t u d e n t s " e s t i m a t i o n of a teacher's ability to c o m m u n i c a t e is not c o n s i d e r e d for faculty p r o m o t i o n s or the g r a n t i n g of tenure. Yet the m a s t e r y of c l a s s r o o m techn i q u e is the m o s t i m p o r t a n t skill of a teacher. In a n institution dedicated to the intellectual edification of the student, this m a k e s n o sense at all.

SECOND, T H E PRIMARY importance of the s t u d e n t implies a d e - e m p h a s i s of the o p i n i o n s of o f f - c a m p u s m e m b e r s of the H o p e c o n s t i t u e n c y . The College exists to c o m m u n i c a t e k n o w l e d g e , not the m o r a l a n d religious views of the v a r i o u s sections of o p i n i o n t h a t m a k e u p the R e f o r m e d C h u r c h in A m e r i c a . E d u c a t i o n a l policy s h o u l d be m a d e b y those w h o a r e schooled in e d u c a t i o n , not b y l a y m e n w h o a r e unf a m i l i a r with b o t h C h r i s t i a n e d u c a t i o n a l p h i l o s o p h y a n d w h a t is a c t u a l l y h a p p e n i n g in H o l l a n d , Mich. If f a r - r e m o v e d a l u m n i , c o n t r i b u t e r s a n d f r i e n d s of the College a r e part of this " c o m m u n i t y of s c h o l a r s , " we need a new v o c a b u l a r y .

T h i s c o n c l u s i o n is s t r e n g t h e n e d when it is noted t h a t the C h u r c h d o e s n o t c o m e c l o s e to pulling its weight in the s u p p o r t o f t h e College. It h a s p r o v i d e d u s with a g u i d i n g philosophy, moral support and a good n u m b e r o f s t u d e n t s , and for these we a r e truly grateful.

U N F O R T U N A T E L Y , ITS material c o n t r i b u t i o n s h a v e not a p p r o a c h e d its int a n g i b l e ones. At present, H o p e s t u d e n t s p a y for 7 3 percent of the o p e r a t i n g b u d g e t of the College—a p e r c e n t a g e f a r a b o v e t h a t at m o s t q u a l i t y c h u r c h - a f f i l i a t e d institutions. If o u r o f f - c a m p u s constituency w o u l d like to see the C o l l e g e c o n f o r m m o r e c l o s e l y to their e d u c a t i o n a l ideas, m o r e f i n a n c i a l s u p p o r t w o u l d c e r t a i n l y b o l s t e r their a r g u ment. As it is n o w , the studer. 4 b o d y is the m a j o r s e g m e n t of the College c o m m u n i t y , fiscally a s well a s p h i l o s o p h i c a l l y .

TOM H I L D E B R A N D T 1 d o not m e a n to give the i m p r e s s i o n that the o p i n i o n s of students a r e totally d i s r e g a r d e d in d e c i s i o n - m a k i n g . On the contrary, Hope's governmental structure is p e r h a p s o n e of the most p r o g r e s s i v e in the c o u n t r y , a n d c e r t a i n l y is d e c a d e s a h e a d of the d e c i s i o n - m a k i n g p r o c e s s of m a n y l a r g e r , m o r e p r e s t i g i o u s universities.

Y E T W H E N T H E CHIPS are down, the welfare of the i n d i v i d u a l s t u d e n t is not considered the i m p o r t a n t factor indecisionm a k i n g , a s it s h o u l d be. An i m p o r t a n t r e a s o n for this is the misuse of the three c a u s e s o f H o p e ' s u n i q u e n e s s m e n t i o n e d at the b e g i n n i n g of this e s s a y .

Often, i n n o v a t i o n s which s t u d e n t s consider b e n e f i c i a l ' a r e cast aside b e c a u s e " t h e y would destroy H o p e ' s sense of comm u n i t y . " A d m i n i s t r a t o r s and f a c u l t y m a k e

this statement a s thr)ugh'it were a d e m o l i s h ing b l o w to a n y a r g u m e n t , a s t h o u g h this " s e n s e of c o m m u n i t y " were the s u p r e m e virtue.

UNFORTUNATELY, MANY students d o not see it this w a y . F o r one thing, it h a s never been established that H o p e indeed h a s a s e n s e of c o m m u n i t y . If it has, the next t a s k is to define w h a t k i n d of c o m m u n i t y is m e a n t . A p r i s o n h a s a sense of c o m m u n i t y , too—a sense, incidentally, which is e n h a n c e d a n d m a i n t a i n e d b y living and e a t i n g together—yet this type of thing s h o u l d c e r t a i n l y not be p r e s e r v e d here. And if H o p e ' s c o m m u n i t y is defined as a beneficial one, i t ^ r e m a i n s to b e d e m o n s t r a t e d that its a d v a n t a g e s outweigh the benefits of increased p e r s o n a l f r e e d o m . T h i s kind of a r g u i n g f r o m u n p r o v e n a s s u m p t i o n s must s t o p if r s t u d e n t s a r e to t a k e H o p e ' s " c o m m u n i t y sense" seriously.

T h e s a m e k i n d of t h i n g c a n be said for the defense of rules p a s s e d b e c a u s e " H o p e takes a n i n t e r e s t ' i n its s t u d e n t s as total h u m a n b e i n g s , not just while they a r e in the c l a s s r o o m . " It is a big j u m p f r o m this statement to the a s s e r t i o n t h a t this interest necessitates l o c k i n g w o m e n into d o r m i t o r i e s at 11 p.m. or r e q u i r i n g t h e m to a c c o u n t for themselves w h e n ' t h e y a r e " o n the o u t s i d e . " If there is a r a t i o n a l explan a t i o n for this " l e a p of f a i t h , " it w o u l d be nice to h e a r it.

T H E C O L L E G E S D U T Y t o 'interpret k n o w l e d g e a c c o r d i n g to C h r i s t i a n prec e p t s " is likewise m i s u s e d . T o b e sure, this i n t e r p r e t a t i o n is o n e of H o p e C o l l e g e ' s s t r o n g points. But r e f u s i n g to p e r m i t students t o act c o n t r a r y to these precepts is c o e r c i o n , not i n t e r p r e t a t i o n . Dictation in the g u i s e of g u i d a n c e s h o u l d not b e permitted to continue.

In s h o r t , it is i m p e r a t i v e that t h e College c a r e f u l l y define exactly w h a t it wishes to b e a n d a c c o m p l i s h . S h o d d y a n d s l o p p y c o n c e p t i o n s of its g o a l s h a s led to r e t a r d a tion of a c a d e m i c a n d s o c i a l p r o g r e s s in the p a s t , a n d will c o n t i n u e t o d o s o in the f u t u r e unless e l i m i n a t e d .

Capitalism and Racism

At the present time, due t o the a d v a n c e s m a d e in m a n ' s k n o w ledge, it is quite difficult f o r rational people to d e n y the scientific evidence of o u r basic e q u a l ity. Yet black people still e x p e r ience hostilities a n d d i s c r i m i n a tion which derive f r o m r a c i a l prejudices. These p r e v a i l i n g prejudices h a v e a s o u r c e that c a n be perceived.

L I F E IS h a r s h l y competitive.

Many poor whites e n v y the b l a c k s in their success in f i n d i n g a v i a b l e protest m o v e m e n t . T h e y need one, too.

However, it is easier to h a t e t h a n to think of a way to m a k e m o r e and betterp a y i n g j o b s a v a i l a b l e , or m a k e a minimum income forevery family the law of the l a n d .

T h i s n a t i o n h a s got to settle u p o n a policy t h a t would a i m to distribute fairly a n a s t o n i s h i n g wealth i n c l u d i n g all its s u r p l u s e s a n d potential p r o d u c t i v e c a p a c i ties. Do we need w a r s and milit a r y s p e n d i n g to keep o u r economy g o i n g , or c a n it be h a r n e s s e d to p r o v i d e the s c h o o l s , h o u s e s , f o o d , etc. that m a n y need a n d d o n ' t h a v e ? Until such p r o b l e m s a r e solved, the bitterness between the two races shall continue. T h i s is a r e m i n d e r of m a n ' s d e v i o u s ability to conceal his real s t r u g gles b y a small r e a c t i o n a r y ruling circle of c a p i t a l i s t s who k e e p their exploitative position intact by k e e p i n g the w o r k i n g class divided on the issue of race. T h e r e a s o n whites in this c o u n t r y d o not focus u p o n the real exploiters is they h a v e been led to believe that r a c i s m in isolation is the f u n d a m e n t a l c a u s e of the exploitation of the toiling m a s s e s .

T H E BASIS O F the r e l a t i o n s of p r o d u c t i o n u n d e r the c a p i t a -

list system is that the capitalist o w n s the m e a n s of p r o d u c t i o n but not the w o r k e r s in p r o d u c tion—the w a g e l a b o r e r s , w h o m the capitalist c a n neither kill n o r sell b e c a u s e t h e y a r e p e r s o n a l l y free, but w h o a r e d e p r i v e d of the m e a n s of p r o d u c t i o n a n d , in o r d e r not to die of h u n g e r , a r e obliged to sell their l a b o r p o w e r to the c a p i t a l i s t and b e a r the y o k e of ex ploitation.

H a v i n g p r o d u c e d such tremend o u s forces, c a p i t a l i s m h a s bec o m e e n m e s h e d in c o n t r a d i c t i o n s which it is u n a b l e to solve. By p r o d u c i n g l a r g e q u a n t i t i e s of comm o d i t i e s a n d r e d u c i n g prices, capitalism intensifies c o m p e t i t i o n , ruins the m a s s of s m a l l a n d m e d i u m c o m p e t i t i o n , reduces purc h a s i n g power, with the result being the i m p o s s i b i l i t y of disp o s i n g of the c o m m o d i t i e s produced. By e x p a n d i n g p r o d u c t i o n and concentrating m i l l i o n s of w o r k e r s in h u g e mills a n d factories, c a p i t a l i s m lends to the process of p r o d u c t i o n a s o c i a l c h a r acter a n d , t h u s , u n d e r m i n e s its own foundations. The social character of the p r o c e s s of p r o d u c t i o n d e m a n d s the s o c i a l m e a n s of prod u c t i o n ; yet the m e a n s of p r o d u c tion remain private capitalist p r o p e r t y which is i n c o m p a t i b l e with the social c h a r a c t e r of the p r o c e s s of p r o d u c t i o n .

"THESE CONTRADICTIONS between the c h a r a c t e r of p r o d u c tive forces a n d the r e l a t i o n s of p r o d u c t i o n m a k e t h e m s e l v e s felt in periodic crises of o v e r p r o d u c t i o n . " T h e c a p i t a l i s t , finding no sufficient m a r k e t , is t h e n c o m pelled to s u s p e n d p r o d u c t i o n , a n d d e s t r o y m a n u f a c t u r e d g o o d s at a time when m i l l i o n s a r e forced

Community Services Center Is To Be Established Soon A c o m m u n i t y services center will s o o n be e s t a b l i s h e d in either the H o l l a n d Rusk B u i l d i n g or in a n e a r b y h o u s e to p r o v i d e a v a r i e t y of services for the H o l l a n d c o m m u n i t y in g e n e r a l a n d the L a t i n A m e r i c a n s in p a r t i c u l a r .

A L T H O U G H T H E project is now f a c i n g a financial crisis, J u n e 1 h a s been set a s the d a t e of its o p e n i n g , stated Dr. D a v i d M y e r s , who is s e r v i n g on the s t e e r i n g c o m mittee of the c o m m u n i t y project.

Hope students will be enc o u r a g e d to volunteer to w o r k in the n o n p r o f i t o r g a n i z a t i o n .

AS O N E OF ITS m a n y services, the center will assist n e w c o m e r s in b e c o m i n g oriented to the c o m m u n i t y a n d in s e c u r i n g n e c e s s a r y housing and employment. The center a l s o p l a n s to p r o v i d e a c l e a r i n g h o u s e for referral to a p p r o p r i a t e existing c o m m u n i t y services such a s legal aid, c r i s i s intervention, t r a n s p o r t a t i o n a n d

a central l o c a t i o n for o u t r e a c h b y health, welfare a n d e m p l o y m e n t agencies. It m a y implement a n e m e r g e n c y p h o n e s y s t e m for p e r s o n s in need of help.

T h e idea for the center origin a t e d in a c h u r c h d i s c u s s i o n g r o u p and the Latin A m e r i c a n Society in Holland.

Several churches and social agencies have j o i n e d in p l a n n i n g the center.

It follows t h a t if a m o d e of p r o d u c t i o n of m a t e r i a l v a l u e in a n e c o n o m i c system a s s i g n s a n i n f e r i o r g r o u p position to a p a r ticular race of men for the p u r pose of facilitating that s y s t e m ' s e x p l o i t a t i o n of m a n by m a n , s u c h a system b e c o m e s intrinisically racist.

C A P I T A L I S M DOES a s s i g n inferior g r o u p s . It c o m p e l s all nations. . .to a d o p t the b o u r g e o i s m o d e of p r o d u c t i o n ; it c o m p e l s them to i n t r o d u c e what it calls civilization into their midst, i.e., to b e c o m e b o u r g e o i s themselves.

T h o s e w h o c a n n o t or w h o d o not conform to their i m a g e a r e labelled as d r e g s of that society.

T h i s inability to c o n f o r m to the bourgeois image becomes another j u s t i f i c a t i o n for their e x p l o i t a t i o n .

B l a c k s h a v e never h a d the opp o r t u n i t y to b e c o m e b o u r g e o i s .

In fact, this system is s u s t a i n e d b e c a u s e we a r e forced t o r e m a i n e a s y p r e y to c a p i t a l i s t e x p l o i t a tion.

Wastvington, D.C. President R i c h a r d N i x o n reported to the n a t i o n W e d n e s d a y night on p r o s p e c t s f o r peace in S o u t h e a s t Asia. NOW T H O S E A R O U N D h i m , extraordinarily e n o u g h , knew w h a t their f u t u r e p l a n s were, a n d even if they d i d n ' t h a v e a n y f u t u r e p l a n s at all that w a s still better t h a n K e g g . He d i d n ' t k n o w a n y thing. He d i d n ' t k n o w if he w a s g o i n g to succeed o r fail. And failure, K e g g figured, took a b o u t as m u c h active p l a n n i n g as success a n d since he, p o o r fool, h a d t a k e n n o step in a n y direction he w a s left in l i m b o , b o u n d to certain unknown horrors.

'Spoon River' Succeeds with Grace and Dignity Editor's N o t e This week's review of the theatre department's production of " S p o o n River Antholog y " is written by anchor critiques editor Bruce Ronda. " S p o o n River" will be presented tonight and tomorrow night at 8:0<) p.m. in the Little Theatre.

Risking g e n e r a l i z a t i o n , I would p r o p o s e that the t h e a t r e department h a s discovered at least one secret of successful p r o d u c t i o n , a n d that secret h a s m a d e " S p o o n River A n t h o l o g y " a s m a s h i n g success. Certainly it is the a c t o r s ' e n t h u s i a s m a n d the a u d i e n c e ' s willingness to involve itself in the speeches and lives of the c h a r a c ters w h o resurrect themselves on stage.

B U T BASIC TO a c t o r s ' a n d a u d i e n c e ' s e n t h u s i a s m is what I would call the p r o d u c t i o n ' s totality, its successful creation of a complete and believable e n v i r o n ment. Against the u n o b t r u s i v e setting designed by D o n a l d F i n n , the m a r v e l o u s l y effective lighting a r r a n g e d b y Richard A n g s t a d t , a n d the m u s i c a l a c c o m p a n i m e n t p r o v i d e d by Billy Meyers, the citizens of S p o o n River, 111., rise u p to articulate their potentials and frustrations.

Within the frontier context, s o m e c h a r a c t e r s c o m e to deeper selfa w a r e n e s s , m o v i n g eas ily with'the c u r r e n t of A m e r i c a n i n d i v i d u a l ism a n d work ethic. L u c i n d a Matlock, p o r t r a y e d by J o a n n e K o r noelje, a g g r e s s i v e l y asserts her life-philosophy: What is this I h e a r of s o r r o w and weariness.

It would be futile to continue citing p o e m s which e m b o d y the motif of realized a n d unfilfilled potential; it is M a s t e r s ' g e n i u s that his " A n t h o l o g y " presents such a rich and u n f l i n c h i n g l y honest portrait of simple b a c k w o o d s life.

A N D IT S H O U L D e q u a l l y be the pride of the theatre d e p a r t m e n t that " S p o o n River A n t h o l o g y " m i r r o r s so effectively the talent of its a u t h o r . N e a r l y every poemspeech is delivered with skill a n d grace. The t i m i n g a n d r h y t h m of individual recitation a r e complemented b y the m o v e m e n t of the a c t o r s on stage.

Both individual speeches a n d choreography are enhanced by lighting a r r a n g e m e n t s which a r e quite literally the best I h a v e ever witnessed in the Little Theatre.

T w o e x a m p l e s will suffice to illustrate this successful interweaving of speech, c h o r e o g r a p h y a n d lighting. Jim H e r s ' c h a r a c t e r i z a tion of A.D. Blood, the religious c r u s a d e r , is well-done in itself, but the w a y in which the spotlight m a k e s H e r s ' eyes two black sockets as he steps f o r w a r d into the light intensifies his c h a r a c t e r ' s religious f a n a t i c i s m . The use of colored lenses d u r i n g the speech of Dippold the Optician is a n i m a g i n a t i v e a n d successful device

e n h a n c i n g the fitting of spectacles t h r o u g h which the world is viewed.

Yet another element contributing tp the p l a y ' s totality is the effective u s e of A m e r i c a n folk music. It is highly a p p r o p r i a t e that essentially u n t r a i n e d voices a r e used, for the music presented was s u n g b y S p o o n R i v e r ' s people and reflects their own p a r t i c u l a r life-style.

"SPOON RIVER A n t h o l o g y " simply must b e seen in o r d e r fully to be appreciated. It h a s technical c o h e s i o n , true. But b e y o n d that, it h a s grace a n d dignity, c a p t u r e d especially in Masters' own e p i t a p h , " Let's to the Fields."

The p r o d u c t i o n possesses an internal r h y t h m which can o n l y be achieved when the poetry of l a n g u a g e is fused with the p o e t r y of p r o d u c t i o n . For this f u s i o n , for this r h y t h m , we a r e indeed indebted to the cast a n d staff of " S p o o n River A n t h o l o g y . "

GOING INTO tomorrow's MIAA t o u r n a m e n t , the Dutch will take a 3-1 conference r e c o r d , the only loss c o m i n g at the h a n d s of K a l a m a z o o . K a l a m a z o o won the l e a g u e title each y e a r since 1936.

The s t r u c t u r e o f t h e MIAA t o u r n a m e n t will be in six singles flights a n d three d o u b l e s flights. Indiv i d u a l a n d d o u b l e s team placement will be a c c o r d i n g to their r a n k on their respective team.

Three p o i n t s will be a w a r d e d for each c h a m p i o n s h i p flight winner and o n e for each c o n s o l a t i o n flight winner.
