App r o v a l came after nearly one h o u r of discussion in which M i s s S t e v e n s a n d M i s s B a r k e r particip a t e d while a t t e n d i n g the m e e t i n g a s g u e s t s , a s did s e v e r a l o t h e r black students. Nineteen Chapel Cutters Refused Full Adtnittunre Nineteen H o p e s t u d e n t s will apparently n o t b e p e r m i t t e d to r e g i s t e r next s e m e s t e r b e c a u s e of excessive u n e x c u s e d c h a p e l cuts. These students h a v e 2 0 or more c h a p e l a b s e n c e s which m a k e s it i m p o s s i b l e f o r them to r e d u c e their n u m b e r to t h e limit of six. According to D e a n of S t u d e n t s R o b e r t De Y o u n g , these 19 h a v e not m a d e a " s e r i o u s a t t e m p t to r e d u c e their n u m b e r of c u t s . " Of the 19, six a r e f r e s h m e n a n d 13 a r e s o p h o m o r e s . T h r o u g h a letter r e c e n t l y sent b y D e a n De Y o u n g ' s office d a t e d M a y 5, 2 2 s t u d e n t s were notified t h a t t h e y w o u l d n o t be p e r m i t t e d to register u n l e s s they r e d u c e d their n u m b e r of cuts. T h r e e of these students appealed to the D e a n a n d w e r e e x o n e r a t e d f o r various reasons. N o t i f i c a t i o n of i n d i v i d u a l stud e n t s of the final d e c i s i o n a s to w h e t h e r o r n o t t h e y will b e permitted to r e g i s t e r in the fall will b e m a d e n e x t week after the conc l u s i o n of c h a p e l services. In a d d i t i o n , s o m e s o r t of a c t i o n will be t a k e n a g a i n s t the a p p r o x i m a t e l y 24 s t u d e n t s w h o will end the s e m e s t e r with t w o o r t h r e e une x c u s e d a b s e n c e s , D e a n De Y o u n g s a i d . What s o r t of a c t i o n will be t a k e n will b e decided b y t h e D e a n a f t e r he h a s " d i s c u s s e d t h e m a t t e r with o t h e r s . " He indicated t h a t t h e s e s t u d e n t s m a y " j u s t b e reprimanded."
Miss B a r k e r t h e n said t h a t the legal p r o b l e m s c o u l d b e e r a d i cated b e c a u s e " w e w a n t a w i n g or c l u s t e r " not s e p a r a t e h o u s i n g . " S o m e things, h o w e v e r , h a v e to b e c l e a n e d u p , " he a d d e d .
