A retired A r m y colonel, he is a p a s t recipient of the Bronze S t a r M e d a l and the A r m y C o m m e n d a tion Medal. As a m e m b e r of the U.S. m i l i t a r y aid group to G r e e c e f r o m April 1950 to May 1953, M r . Student Life Committee Approves Sixth Frat, and New Democratic Left Last F r i d a y the Student Life C o m m i t t e e g a v e final a p p r o v a l to the r e q u e s t of a sixth social f r a t ernity and the New D e m o c r a t i c L e f t to be recognized a s official Hope College organizations. In both c a s e s , the motions w e r e p a s s e d by unanim o u s vote of the c o m m i t t e e in executive session. The new f r a t e r n i t y will h a v e the s a m e r i g h t s and p r i v i l e g e s of t h e existing five and will b e c o m e ia m e m b e r in equal s t a n d i n g on t h e IFC. Acording to the constitution a p p r o v e d by the c o m m i t t e e , t h e i r G r e e k n a m e will be P h i Delta Chi. At this t i m e , no decision h a s been m a d e on an i n f o r m a l n a m e , r e p o r t ed p r e s i d e n t P a u l Verduin. Verduin said t h a t i n f o r m a l m e e t ings h a d been held to a c q u a i n t ind e p e n d e n t s with t h e new f r a t e r n i t y and t h a t "25 or 30 h a d shown intere s t . " The m e m b e r s h i p still r e m a i n s at the original 11, h o w e v e r , a s t h e group h a d d e c i d e d to f r e e z e its m e m b e r s h i p until t h e SLC h a d a p proved t h e i r constitution, he continued. The c o m m i t t e e ' s a c c e p t a n c e of t h e NDL c a m e a f t e r t h e g r o u p r e w r o t e its s t a t e m e n t of p u r p o s e a c c o r d i n g to a r e q u e s t m a d e b y t h e SLC. A lengthy discussion w a s held c o n c e r n ing both t h e s t a t e m e n t of p u r p o s e and t h e g e n e r a l c h a r a c t e r of t h e new o r g a n i z a t i o n . C o m m i t t e e m e m b e r E . Jean Sava g e said t h e n e w s t a t e m e n t clarified the N D L ' s position quite well but t h a t s h e w a s c o n c e r n e d a b o u t the o r o t e s t m a r c h in t h e tulip t i m e p a r a d e . She w a s " u n e a s y a b o u t t h e
m a r c h " b e c a u s e she noted t h a t five m e m b e r s of the NDL had p a r t i c i pated, including p r e s i d e n t Glenn Pontier. Mrs. S a v a g e said t h a t the protest had " b e g u n a s a l a r k " and questioned how r e s p o n s i b l e 'Jie N D L would be if m a d e an official college organization. Wes Michaelson wondered w h e t h e r the club would " p a r ticipate in the a c t i v i t i e s . " P o n t i e r noted t h a t t h e N D L w a s not directly involved with t h e dem o n s t r a t i o n and t h a t his p a r t i c i p a tion w a s a p e r s o n a l decision. If t h e club r e c e i v e d official s a n c t i o n , a n y action t h a t w a s t a k e n would f i r s t h a v e to be a p p r o v e d by d e m o c r a t i c vote and a f t e r s e e k i n g the counsel of their f a c u l t y a d v i s o r , Donald Clelland, who said t h a t he would certainly advise them "to go through p r o p e r c h a n n e l s a n d not to b r e a k anv l a w s . " D e a n T h o m a s Carey said t h e N D L would be " s u b ject to college discipline if it w a s a sanctioned o r g a n i z a t i o n . " Dean Isla Van E e n e n a a m w a s troubled by t h e n a m e of the o r g a n ization which s h e said " s e e m e d to belong u n d e r a Red f l a g . " The p r o b l e m which s e e m e d to c o n c e r n the c o m m i t t e e most w a s . a s Michaelson put it, " t h e g r e a t bellige r e n c e and d e f e n s i v e n e s s exhibited by the m e m b e r s of t h e o r g a n i z a t i o n . " Several m e m b e r s of the committee expressed their uneasiness about this. Dr. L a r s G r a n b e r g said, h o w e v e r , t h a t it w a s " u n f a i r to j u d g e t h e organization on w h a t w e a n t i c i p a t e thev m i g h t d o . " T h e g r o u p h a s an a d v i s o r a n d a s t a t e m e n t of p u r p o s e ,
he noted, a n d t h e r e w a s no real reason to not allow t h e m to organize officially. This s e e m e d t h e g e n e r a l consensus of the c o m m i t t e e when charm a n Dr. A r t h u r J e n t z a d j o u r n e d the public m e e t i n g to allow the SLC to m e e t p r i v a t e l y and vote.
GLCA Receives $180,000 Grant For Projects A g r a n t of $180,000 for a threey e a r s u p p o r t of f a c u l t y p r o j e c t s and s e m i n a r s in t h e a r t s and h u m a n i t i e s h a s just b e e n given by the C a r n e g i e Corp. to t h e G r e a t L a k e s Colleges Assn., of which Hope College is a member. A c c o r d i n g to word r e c e i v e d by P r e s i d e n t Calvin V a n d e r W e r f , the g r a n t will be m a d e in t h r e e $60,000 p a y m e n t s a n n u a l l y , a n d the 12 m e m b e r colleges will p r o f i t according to f a c u l t y p r o p o s a l s accepted.
