As H o p e College's 150th academic year kicks off, t h e college welcomes its biggest f r e s h m e n class in history.

This year's class consists of a r e c o r d - b r e a k i n g 868 s t u d e n t s , a considerable increase f r o m t h e previous record of 819 set in 2007.

However, the significant size of t h e class b r o u g h t a b o u t s o m e complications for H o p e Residential Life and H o u s i n g . " O u r h o u s i n g is extremely full," says Di r e c t o r of Residential Life John Jobson. "This s u m m e r w a s like a giant puzzle in t e r m s of w h o to h o u s e where."

To solve the housing dilemmas, certain changes were made. W i t h a r e c o r d sized i n c o m i n g class of f r e s h m e n and in t h e midst of an e c o n o m y t h a t h a s yet to fully r e b o u n d , H o p e College c o n t i n u e s t o adapt a n d expand t o a t t e m p t t o m e e t t h e n e e d s of its students. The Dining Services b r a n c h of t h e college is n o exception.

The 2011-12 a c a d e m i c year will see t w o m a j o r c h a n g e s in t h e way H o p e s t u d e n t s pay for a n d receive their food t h r o u g h the school. A "7+ Plan" is n o w being provided for s t u d e n t s w h o c o m m u t e , live off c a m p u s , or live in cottages. For s t u d e n t s w h o visit Phelps Dining Hall o n c a m p u s , a whole series of organizational c h a n g e s were m a d e over the s u m m e r in an a t t e m p t t o improve efficiency and functionality.

"Students have been asking for a smaller meal plan for a while, especially s t u d e n t s living off c a m p u s and in cottages. I think t h e m o t i v a t i o n for that h a s b e e n intensified by the economy," Director of Dining Services Bob Van H e u k e l o m said.

The n e w 7+ Plan is restricted to s t u d e n t s living in a cottage.

MARC BAER GIVES CONVOCATION ADDRESS History Department Chairman Dr. Marc Baer gave the convocation address to an audience of approximately 2,000 people in the Richard and Helen DeVos Fieldhouse Sunday. His address was titled "Invictus," Latin f o r k t Unconquered." This title was a tribute to a p o e m written by William Ernest Henley in 1875. B a e r ' s overall message w a s that it is s o m e t i m e s necessary to look outward in order to grow inwardly.

FACULTY MEMBERS NAMED TO PROFESSORSHIPS Dr. Graham F. Peaslee and Dr. Charlotte vanOyen-Witvliet were recently appointed to endowed professorships at H o p e College.

Peaslee was appointed the Elmer E. Hartergink Professor of Chemistry, while v a n O y e n Witvliet w a s appointed the John H . and Jeanne M . Jacobson Professor of Psychology. E n d o w e d chairs fund s u m m e r research projects as well as provide s o m e salary support.

NURSING GRADS BOAST PERFECT PASS RATES E v e r y Hope College nursing graduate f r o m the 2010-2011 academic year passed the national licensing exam. T h i s is the highest pass rate in the history of the program, w h i c h has an average national pass rate of 91 percent. The nursing program at Hope, which leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing began in 2002. Students generally began this program as sophomores, based on the completion of prerequisites. They are required to do coursework on c a m p u s and multiple field placements. Clinical sites throughout the area include DeVos Children's Hospital, Holland Hospital, Zeeland Hospital and many otherrs.

In addition to the traditional o r i e n t a t i o n e v e n t s like playfair and group meetings, there were several n e w e v e n t s this year, i n c l u d i n g an o u t d o o r c o n c e r t a n d t h e Fall Fan F r e n z y h e l d Tuesday.

This e v e n t w a s o p e n t o all H o p e s t u d e n t s a n d kicked off t h i s year's fall s p o r t s s e a s o n . T h e Backyard B a r b e q u e also m a d e a comeback and was held on Sunday evening.

Also, d u e t o t h e size of t h e f r e s h m e n class, t h e r e w e r e m e m b e r s of t h e o r i e n t a t i o n staff a s s i g n e d t o d i r e c t traffic o n move-in day, m a k i n g t h e p r o c e s s smoother and preventing u n n e c e s s a r y c o n g e s t i o n in t h e streets.

Hayes-Hagar joined the H o p e faculty in 1997 a n d w a s a partt i m e l e c t u r e r in t h e fields of art and education. A Hope alumni herself, she g r a d u a t e d in 1974 with a d e g r e e in art e d u c a t i o n .

A f t e r h e r g r a d u a t i o n she d i d g r a d u a t e w o r k at H a r v a r d U n i versity a n d G r a n d Valley State University. For t h e m a j o r i t y of h e r career, h e r p r i m a r y f o c u s w a s t e a c h i n g art in e l e m e n t a r y schools.

"She w a s an e n e r g e t i c a n d creative t e a c h e r w h o r e c o g n i z e d t h e u n i q u e n e s s in all h e r s t u d e n t s .

A n e w brew might perk students' perspectives on campus-wide coffee distribution.

Creative Dining has been m a k i n g several c h a n g e s this year, including an entire r e v a m p i n g of t h e c o f f e e s e r v e d around campus.

Simpatico Coffee, a Hollandbased coffee c o m p a n y f o u n d e d last year, h a s t a k e n over s u c h c a m p u s c o f f e e s p o t s as t h e Kletz, C u p and Chaucer, Cool Beans, DeVos a n d Van A n d e l s t a d i u m .

T h e n a m e , w h i c h m e a n s "nice" in S p a n i s h , s e e m s to be t h e aim of t h e c o m p a n y as well. " O u r c o f f e e is low in acid, and under our straight-trade system, we end up paying the coffee farmers m o r e than they

c h i l d r e n . At t h o s e c a m p s , H o p e s t u d e n t s w e r e able to gain firsth a n d e x p e r i e n c e in art e d u c a tion.

"She w a s s u c h a positive person. O n the days w h e n o u r p a t h s c r o s s e d a n d h e r office d o o r w a s o p e n , I w o u l d s t o p in h e r office to say hello, c h a t a n d see t h e w o n d e r f u l l y inspiring children's a r t w o r k she displayed."

H o p e College Professor Tim P e n n i n g s noticed a p a t t e r n in t h e A r a b Spring. The r e c e n t uprisings in N o r t h A f r i c a a n d t h e M i d d l e East, c o m m o n l y referred t o as t h e "Arab Spring," consistently displayed certain levels of specific variables, such as aut h o r i t a r i a n response t o unrest, u n e m p l o y m e n t , level of corr u p t i o n and military response.

Pennings, w o r k i n g with a faculty-student research team, created an e q u a t i o n t o analyze t h e various c o m b i n a t i o n s of these variables (for instance, lesser access t o social n e t w o r k i n g as c o m p a r e d to greater access).

Stability, Pennings notes, is difficult to m a i n t a i n w h e n power is located in o n e person's h a n d s instead of resting with a large b o d y of people. Shifting w h o s e h a n d s t h a t p o w e r rests in

h a s also gotten easier, t h a n k s in large p a r t t o social n e t w o r k i n g .

Even with t h e limitations, modeling c o m p l e x situations is helpful to us since it gives us a m e a n s of grasping s o m e of t h e complexity.

W h a t is exciting for stud e n t s in this kind of research is t h a t it d e m o n s t r a t e s h o w the cross-curriculum education available at H o p e can help m a k e sense o u t of global issues. East Coast earthquake rattles Washington, D.C. Cory Lakatos W O R L D CO-EDITOR

Anormal workday was rudely interrupted on the East Coast of the U.S. Aug. 23, when a magnitude-5.8 earthquake struck for about 30 seconds at 1:51 p.m. Three aftershocks ranging from magnitude-2.2 to 4.8 were measured later the same day.

Though some briefly mistook it for a terrorist attack, the quake was not responsible for any serious injuries or deaths. Large earthquakes are rare on the East Coast; the most recent comparable quake happened in 1897.

The National Cathedral suffered several cracked flying buttresses and three out of its four spires lost their capstones. Engineers are already assessing the damage and determining how repairs will go forward.

C u r a c a o , a small island off t h e coast of Venezuela in t h e C a r i b b e a n Sea, is t h e focus of DePree's c u r r e n t exhibit. The C a r i b b e a n exhibit r u n s t h r o u g h O c t . 1. The o p e n i n g r e c e p t i o n is Sept. 9 b e g i n n i n g with an artist talk at 4 p.m.

The artists and t h e island itself fascinate Susan Wilczak, guest c u r a t o r and a d j u n c t art h i s t o r y lecturer at Hope. Wilczak defines a C u r a c a o artist as "one w h o is associated with t h e island, either by place of b i r t h or by establishing an artistic life and r e p u t a t i o n o n t h e island."

In her curator's s t a t e m e n t , Wilczak explains that the exhibit should be viewed while keeping in m i n d "the diversity of t h e isl a n d s history: D u t c h influences, multi-cultural influences, slavery, politics, religion, trade, industry, n a t u r a l e n v i r o n m e n t and island life itself."

Just as t h e p e o p l e speak a variety of colorful languages, t h e D e P r e e exhibit displays t h e work of 10 artists w h o use a variety of m e d i a including oil o n canvas, w o o d and iron s c u l p t u r e s a n d digital prints.

Because of its tropical beaches and numerous diving locations, t h e island is a p o p u l a r vacation d e s t i n a t i o n for t h o s e looking t o relax as well as for those looking for o u t d o o r adventure. The beauty of the island is c a p t u r e d in t h e rich b l u e s and g r e e n s of Ria H o u w e n ' s oil paintings. She describes the e n c o u n t e r b e t w e e n land and sea in her artist state-

ment: W h e n the shore meets t h e water, "there is a mysterious longing for p e a c e and silence."

H e r m a n van Bergen uses a blend of bright colors anvd soft strokes to d e p i c t t h e geography of t h e island in "Salsa I" and "Salsa II." In his artist s t a t e m e n t , van Bergen explains t h a t "salsa is t h e m u s i c of the C a r i b b e a n and South America." Van Bergen believes it is " r e m a r k a b l e t h a t pov-

erty brings f o r t h such a colorful rich music."

A r i a d n e Paries uses her artw o r k t o e x a m i n e her inner self a n d her struggle with religion.

Her acrylic painting entitled "The Black N u n " n o t only symbolizes t h e role of t h e R o m a n Catholic C h u r c h o n t h e island, b u t it indicates her own identity: "My skin is white, b u t on t h e inside I feel like I a m m o r e black t h a n white."

Sculpter H o r t e n c e Brouwn is fascinated and inspired by t h e lively p e o p l e of C u r a c a o . The people love music and dancing.

They c o m m u n i c a t e with lively c o n t a c t w h e n talking a m o n g o n e another. B r o u w n c a p t u r e s b o d y language and m o v e m e n t in her b r o n z e and limestone sculptures. B r o u w n stated, "The w a y p e o p l e talk to you h e r e is t h a t they use their h a n d s to express themselves, and they also t o u c h you, n o t t o be insolent, but j u s t t o m a k e you feel t h e sympathy a n d w a r m t h as a friend."

A trio of local b a n d s played a farewell c o n c e r t at Lemonjello's Coffee Aug. 26. All At Sea, H e a r t s i d e Hooligans a n d The Creaky Floors entertained Lemonjello's visitors for an h o u r and a half b e f o r e saying g o o d b y e to two m e m b e r s of T h e Creaky Floors.

The band's guitarist a n d singer B e n j a m i n W o l t e r s along with percussionist Trevor Pegues will be relocating to T a c o m a , Wash.

The first musician to hit t h e stage w a s Darin Zarzecki w h o

played u n d e r t h e m o n i k e r All At Sea. Despite playing t o a still-assembling c r o w d w h i c h had n o t quite switched gears from coffee-drinkers to concertgoers, Zarzecki put o n t h e m o s t inspired s h o w of t h e evening.

Personal lyrics that r e f e r e n c e d songs by The Gaslight A n t h e m and publicly d e b r i e f e d o n past relationships w e r e a c c o m p a n i e d by a solid display of m u s i c i a n s h i p o n t h e acoustic guitar.

Zarzecki cited Thrice, Ryan A d a m s , Tom W a i t s and M o s q u i t o Flea as p r o m i n e n t musical influences.

Zarzecki is also a fan of t h e w o r k of t h e o t h e r t w o b a n d s h e o p e n e d for. "It's really just raw, s t r i p p e d folk, it's all f r o m t h e heart," h e said.

The second act was t h e d u o Heartside Hooligans from G r a n d Rapids. Their guitarist M i c a h Hill was d e c k e d o u t in a h a r d c o r e - p u n k t-shirt and was a c c o m p a n i e d by Tiffany Elmergreen w h o played t h e melodica.

Both Hill and Elmergreen sung.

W i t h a s o u n d that was solidly i n f l u e n c e d by a love of b o t h p u n k a n d folk music, as well as

lyrics t h a t were b o t h staunchly a n t i - e s t a b l i s h m e n t a n d highly religious, H e a r t s i d e Hooligans played a n u m b e r of songs that inspired sing-alongs f r o m their h u d d l e d g r o u p of f a n s .

Hill a n d Elmergreen are m e m b e r s of Take Hold c h u r c h in G r a n d Rapids w h e r e t h e y invited The Creaky Floors t o play. They w e r e in t u r n invited by t h e Creaky Floors t o play at Lemonjello's.

The Creeky Floors are a trio c o m p o s e d of Wolters, w h o played guitar and s u n g lead vocals; Pegues, w h o played t h e

d j e m b e ; and M a d d i Smith, w h o primarily played t h e viola.

The b a n d h a d a u n i q u e s o u n d as a result of this u n c o m m o n instrumental combination, but t h e t h r e e individuals s e e m e d very comfortable playing together a n d s p e n t t h e t i m e b e t w e e n s o n g s joking a r o u n d with each other, t h e crowd and t h e Lemonjello's staff.

Like Zarzecki, Wolters listed T o m Waits as a musical influence.

Hope Summer Repertory Theatre offers a wide variety of e n t e r t a i n m e n t for the s u m m e r m o n t h s . The DeWitt and Knickerbocker theatres drew crowds by hosting s h o w s such as "Child r e n of Eden," a musical loosely based o n t h e book of Genesis, and "Taking Steps," a c o m e d i c mystery.

H o p e s t u d e n t s , a l u m n i and faculty p a r t i c i p a t e d in auditions, and this s u m m e r they also

helped put o n shows for t h e Holland c o m m u n i t y .

In addition, HSRT p r o d u c e d "I R e m e m b e r Mama," a t o u c h ing play a b o u t a N o r w e g i a n i m m i g r a n t family a d j u s t i n g to A m e r i c a n life a r o u n d t h e 1920s; "Guys o n Ice," a c o m e d i c t r i b u t e to t h e lifestyles of ice f i s h e r m e n in u p p e r M i c h i g a n / W i s c o n s i n ; a n d " R e t u r n t o t h e Forbidden Planet," a futuristic musical adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest."

The children's shows w e r e " H o w I B e c a m e a Pirate" and "The Borrowers."

Leaky eyeballs There's definitely s o m e t h i n g scary a b o u t starting over, isn't there?

It's like t h e feeling you get w h e n you walk into a c r o w d e d r o o m and e v e r y o n e stops talking and stares at you. I t s like the s h u d d e r t h a t grips you w h e n you look d o w n f r o m a very, very high place, and t h e c o n c e p t of falling f r o m there flashes across y o u r m i n d . It's like t h e s o u n d of a d o o r sliding heavily shut, t h e finality of it e c h o i n g in your ears.

It sets your h e a r t racing, and, if you're like m e . it m a k e s your eyeballs leak... w h i c h is just a t o u g h - g u y way of saying I m not very g o o d at holding back t h e floodgates, a n d s o m e t h i n g t h a t u p s e t s m e will m o s t likely elicit s o m e tears.

This year h a s got m e o n t h e edge ( n o t of glory. Lady GaGa) but of tears. People are adaptable, so while I'm not always thrilled with n e w things, I can stay positive a b o u t t h e m , since they t u r n out beautifully in t h e e n d .

But like I said, this year is going to get to me, b e c a u s e like a f o u r t h of you, I'm a senior.

I'm terrified. A n d while I'm also p r e t t y excited for t h e next c h a p t e r of my life, it's still a year away, so it's p r e t t y b l u r r y yet. A n d b e c a u s e of that, t h e e x c i t e m e n t s o m e t i m e s loses its grip o n my imagination a n d lets t h e p a n i c a b o u t my u n k n o w n f u t u r e take hold, w h i c h results in leaky eyeballs. u- u After o n e such shower, t w o f r i e n d s of m i n e n o t i c e d t h e telltale tracks on my cheeks a n d kindly asked w h a t w a s w r o n g , which c a u s e d my r e c e n t l y s t o p p e d deluge t o begin again. A f t e r doing w h a t good f r i e n d s d o a n d hugging m e till t h e tears stopped, o n e of t h e m p a t t e d m e o n t h e s h o u l d e r and said these few w o r d s t o me. Isn't it f u n n y h o w we s p e n d t h e e n t i r e first w e e k back at school a r r a n g i n g a n d rearranging, b u t t h e n don't q u e s t i o n it for t h e rest of t h e year?

It's all a b o u t m a k i n g a h o m e , w h e t h e r o u t of a d o r m r o o m , a p a r t m e n t or cottage. In fact, college in its entirety is a b o u t m a k i n g a h o m e . We find h o m e in friends, extracurriculars, a n d organizations. For f r e s h m e n it's just b e g i n n i n g with o r i e n t a t i o n a n d t h e activities fair — a life full of n a p s in t h e Pine G r o v e a n d late night d o u g h n u t r u n s . For u p p e r c l a s s m e n t h e process is c o n t i n u i n g by buckling d o w n in o u r majors, a n d finding our piece of t h e H o p e College pie. I t h i n k o u r goal in college is t o m a k e a h o m e , not a h o m e away f r o m h o m e . A f t e r winter break f r e s h m a n year I told m y n e w college friends, "I'm c o m i n g home!"
