Texas-born King is an a c k n o w ledged leader in blues music with m u c h of his style influenced by such early Chicago greats as Muddy Waters and T-Bone Walker. King's t u n e s have b e e n p e r f o r m e d by such n o t a b l e s as J i m m y Page, Jeff Beck and Eric C l a p t o n . O t h e r c o n t e m p o r a r y musicians believe King to be an artist w h o has bridged the gap b e t w e e n hard rock and blues. Bloodrock has recently changed its style f r o m a s o m e w h a t depressing, negative style t o more vibrant musical q u a l i t y . IF P A S S E D , a single three or f o u r h o u r course in m a t h and science would fulfill the respective r e q u i r e m e n t s . Three units of high school m a t h would fulfill the m a t h r e q u i r e m e n t , and f o u r units of high school science would suffice for the science r e q u i r e m e n t . T h e proposal for altering the language r e q u i r e m e n t is l e n g t h y ; a two and one half page s t a t e m e n t . Basically, it allows m o r e flexibility in o p t i n g courses o u t s i d e the e l e m e n t a r y level, and also allows a s t u d e n t to select f r o m linguistive courses in f u l f i l l m e n t of the requirement. P R O F E S S O R O F Spanish Hubert Weller asked Brink if there were any supportive data f o r proposing such a m a j o r alteration in the core r e q u i r e m e n t . Brink said there was n o n e . Rider explained that there is "no particular p a t t e r n . . . some schools with strong r e q u i r e m e n t s grow in enrollment, others d o n ' t . " Associate Professor of History Dr. Earl C ur r y s t a t e d t h a t " o u r c o n c e r n should be with m a i n t a i n ing a high quality of e d u c a t i o n . Bill V a n d e n b e r g , eastern representative for the admissions o f f i c e , described the recruiting difficulties that arise because of the language r e q u i r e m e n t . Vandenberg said, "1 have had s t u d e n t s walk right out of the room when 1 told t h e m we had a language requirement." Dr. J. C o t t e r T h a r i n , associate professor ol geology, said. " N o decision should be m a d e b e f o r e we have some more data about the situation in o t h e r colleges. It seems as if you are basing charges on hearsay ynd not evidence. There m^y be additional avenues we can pursue to help the admissions p r o b l e m . " BRINK S T A T E D that the situation is very serious. "Colleges in similar s i t u a t i o n s have had drastic r e d u c t i o n s in e n r o l l m e n t , wholesale r e d u c t i o n s in f a c u l t y , and scrapping and in-fighting in the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n , " he said. Professor of Physics Dr. J a m e s V a n P u t t e n expressed strong disapproval of the proposal and the assertions on the part of the admissions o f f i c e that the " s t r i n g e n t " core curriculum is h a m p e r ing recruiting e f f o r t s . Van P u t t e n stated that the admissions o f f i c e o f f e r e d few s t a t e m e n t s about the college's academic excellence for prospective s t u d e n t s . " Y o u might as well look at s o m e d i f f e r e n c e s b e t w e e n last year and this year, for e x a m p l e , the d i f f e r e n t calend a r , " he said. VANDENBERG added, "The 16 percent decrease in e n r o l l m e n t looks particularly bad because the preceding year was so g o o d . 1 d o n ' t think we should p u s h the panic b u t t o n . Perhaps the g r o w t h rate the college is pursuing is unrealistic." " P e r h a p s we should be m o r e logical in t e r m s of t h e n u m b e r of s t u d e n t s we can e x p e c t , " concluded V a n d e n b e r g . Discussion then e n d e d and the proposal was tabled.
