MISS SPRIK w a s g r a d u a t e d f r o m M i c h i g a n State U n i v e r s i t y in 1 9 6 2 . S h e h a s s e r v e d a s coo r d i n a t o r of activities for InterV a r s i t y C h r i s t i a n F e l l o w s h i p in Ohio. S h e w a s a g r a d u a t e resident a d v i s o r while t a k i n g g r a d u a t e w o r k in s t u d e n t p e r s o n n e l a d m i n i s t r a t i o n at M i c h i g a n S t a t e last year.

" Y o u r e m e m b e r t h a t the s t u d e n t p o l l on H o p e ' s s p i r i t u a l life i n d i c a t e d t h a t o n e of the m o s t m e a n i n g f u l a s p e c t s of t h a t life is c o n t a c t b e t w e e n s t u d e n t s a n d f a c u l t y . T h e De Witt b r o t h e r s h a v e been l i f e l o n g r e s i d e n t s of W e s t e r n Michig a n . T h e i r p a r e n t s e m i g r a t e d to the U n i t e d S t a t e s f r o m the Netherl a n d s in 1 8 9 2 a n d settled in G r a n d Rapids.

FROM T H E M O D E S T b e g i n n i n g of a s m a l l h a t c h e r y in 1 9 3 6 , the De Witts e x p a n d e d to o n e of

the l a r g e s t p o u l t r y o p e r a t i o n s in the a r e a . In 1 9 4 8 t h e y d e v e l o p e d the first r e l i a b l e m e c h a n i s m c a p able of a u t o m a t i c a l l y f e e d i n g b i r d s in t h e i r o w n p o u l t r y o p e r a tion.

T h i s m a r k e d the b e g i n n i n g of t h e d e v e l o p m e n t of a completeline of e q u i p m e n t f o r r a i s i n g anim a l s in c o n f i n e m e n t . Big D u t c h m a n w a s the c o m p a n y a n d t r a d e n a m e selected a n d p r o m o t e d f o r these c o m p l e t e s y s t e m s . Dean Rider Discusses a Liberal Education

Liberal arts must b e c o m e i n v o l v e d in s o c i a l prob l e m s a n d e x a m i n e them f r o m a s t a n d p o i n t of m o r a l i t y . " So s a i d Dr. M o r r e t t e Rider, H o p e ' s new Dean for Academic A f f a i r s . A m e m b e r of the H o p e m u s i c f a c u l t y since 1 9 4 7 , D e a n R i d e r w a s a p p o i n t e d to his present post in .June of 1 9 6 7 a n d spent last y e a r a s A s s i s t a n t to the P r e s i d e n t of the U n i v e r s i t y of W a s h i n g t o n .

U N IV E R S I T ! ES a r e m o r e d ominated by professionalism than a r e s m a l l c o l l e g e s like H o p e , a n d t h e i r s t u d e n t s a r e m o r e tied to m a j o r s . C o n s e q u e n t l y , they deal p r i m a r i l y in f a c t s a n d i n f o r m a tion. Hope's affiliation with the R e f o r m e d C h u r c h in A m e r i c a , s a i d D e a n Rider, is a b a s i c i n g r e d i e n t in the " s t a n d p o i n t of m o r a l i t y " f r o m which H o p e s h o u l d e x a m i n e social p r o b l e m s .

"WE H A V E G A I N E D a g r e a t deal from o u r ties with the C h u r c h , " he s t a t e d . " T h e R C A h a s p r o v i d e d us with a h e r i t a g e a n d a m o r a l p u r p o s e . It h a s a l s o g i v e n the c o l l e g e s e l f - c o n f i d e n c e a n d h o p e in th'e f u t u r e . In a d d i t i o n , the c h u r c h b a c k g r o u n d of m a n y of o u r s t u d e n t s h a s at least p a r t i a l l y a c c o u n t e d f o r the r e l a t i v e q u i e t n e s s of o u r c a m p u s . " " H o w e v e r , " a d d e d Dr. R i d e r , " w e m u s t be a l l o w e d a little freed o m . We c a n ' t a n s w e r q u e s t i o n s with d o g m a a n y m o r e . L a r g e r universities d o not d o this, in m a n y c a s e s b e c a u s e it is p h y s i c a l l y i m p o s s i b l e f o r t h e m . But f o r u s not to interest o u r s e l v e s in a student as an individual outside the c l a s s r o o m w o u l d be s a y i n g t h a t we a r e o n l y c o m m u n i c a t i n g f a c t s a n d f i g u r e s . T h i s is not the i o b of a l i b e r a l a r t s c o l l e g e . " "This is not meant in a r e s t r i c t i v e s e n s e , " the D e a n h a s tened to a d d , " b e c a u s e strict in l o c o p a r e n t i s is d e a d . All I m e a n is t h a t we m u s t k e e p s t u d e n t a c t i o n f r o m being destructive."

D e a n Rider p r e f e r s a s m a l l coll e g e to a l a r g e u n i v e r s i t y . " A c o l l e g e c a n act f a s t e r t h a n a uni v e r s i t y c a n . An ex a m pie of w h a t I m e a n is the p a s s - f a i l s y s t e m , w h i c h H o p e p u t t h r o u g h in less t h a n o n e s e m e s t e r . It t o o k the U n i v e r s i t y of W a s h i n g t o n o v e r t w o v e a r s to implement a similar p l a n , " he s a i d .

T H E D E A N p l a c e s s t r o n g emp h a s i s o n the r o l e of the s t u d e n t in the d e c i s i o n - m a k i n g p r o c e s s at H o p e . " I f e e l , " he s a i d , " t h a t s t u d e n t s s h o u l d p l a y a p a r t in d e c i d i n g w h a t c o u r s e s s h o u l d be o f f e r e d at H o p e . " Dr. R i d e r is p l e a s e d with the new committee structure passed b y t h e f a c u l t y last T h u r s d a y . " F o r t h e p a s t s e v e r a l y e a r s the c o m m i t tee s t r u c t u r e a n d the f a c u l t y h a n d b o o k h a d been c h a n g e d piecemeal until a p r e t t y u n w o r k a b l e s y s t e m w a s e v o l v e d . It's a b o u t t i m e t h a t t h e w h o l e t h i n g w a s r e v i s e d , " he s a i d . T h e D e a n sees a n i n c r e a s e d i n v o l v e m e n t of s t u d e n t s a s o n e of the p l a n ' s s t r o n g points.

A c c o r d i n g to the D e a n , a g r e a t p r o b l e m at H o p e h a s been a l a c k of c o m m u n i c a t i o n b e t w e e n the student b o d y a n d the A d m i n i s t r a t i o n . " P a r t of this c a n be a l l e v i a t e d b y m a k i n g full u s e of the new struct u r e , " he a s s e r t e d . " N o w s t u d e n t s c a n b r i n g t h e i r i d e a s b e f o r e the school simply by following t h r o u g h with t h e s t r u c t u r e . It's o u r own f a u l t if it d o e s n ' t w o r k . " "FOR I N S T A N C E , " said Dean R i d e r , " w e h e a r a lot of talk t o d a y a b o u t the n e e d to s t u d y

If stud e n t s w o u l d like to h a v e c o u r s e s in this a r e a o r i n c o r p o r a t e this subject m a t t e r into present courses, a n a p p r o a c h w h i c h d e s e r v e s more attention than it has received, the c o u r s e to f o l l o w w o u l d be to b r i n g t h e idea to committees. Students h a v e a m p l e representation on t h e m . " C o m m e n t i n g o n the d i s c u s s i o n of a t r i m e s t e r p l a n at H o p e w h i c h t o o k p l a c e last y e a r . Dr. Rider said, " I ' m not really enthusiastic a b o u t the q u a r t e r s y s t e m . W h a t is s o m a g i c a b o u t t a k i n g o n l y n i n e h o u r s per t e r m I ' m not q u i t e s u r e . F o r o n e t h i n g it's m o r e exp e n s i v e . T h e r e ' s 5 0 p e r cent m o r e record keeping i n v o l v e d . " " W h a t I m i g h t like to l o o k into w o u l d b e a 1 4 - 4 - 1 4 p l a n , " he c o n t i n u e d . " T h i s is, of c o u r s e , s p e c u l a t i o n . But h e r e , a g a i n , is where student involvement comes in. If s t u d e n t s w o u l d like to p r e s e n t a p l a n , we w o u l d c e r t a i n l y be g l a d to l o o k at it."

Mr. Sfeffens w a s g r a d u a t e d f r o m Hope College in 1930 and r e c e i v e d a m a s t e r ' s d e g r e e with a m a j o r in e c o n o m i c s a n d b u s i n e s s at N o r t h w e s t e r n U n i v e r s i t y .

P r i o r to his e m p l o y m e n t at H o p e , he s e r v e d t h e State of Michig a n f o r ten y e a r s a s s u p e r v i s o r of auditors.

Mr. Steffens h a s a l s o s e r v e d o n the H o l l a n d City C o u n c i l f o r ten vears a n d was m a y o r pro-tem from 1961-1965.

T h e p u r p o s e of the p r o g r a m , a c c o r d i n g to Dr. F. Student b u d g e t requests are not t h e o n l y r e q u e s t s affected n o t e d C l a r e n c e J. H a n d l o g t e n , D i r e c t o r of B u s i n e s s A f f a i r s . M a n y a c a demic departamental requests h a v e a l s o been cut, s o m e m o r e t h a n 2 0 p e r cent.

D E S P I T E T H I S fact, t h e t o t a l b u d g e t f o r the s c h o o l is u p eight per cent o v e r last y e a r . T h e b u d g e t cut a l l o t s $ 8 , 6 0 0 less t h a n last year for extra-curricular budgets. However, addit i o n a l r e v e n u e s o u r c e s will p r o b a b l y m a k e u p f o r this $ 8 , 6 0 0 .

Forty Attend Vienna Prograi

By H a r o l d K a m m T h e 1 9 6 8 H o p e C o l l e g e Vienn a S u m m e r S c h o o l c o m p l e t e d its thirteenth a n n u a l s e s s i o n this v e a r . U n d e r the d i r e c t i o n of Dr. Paul Fried, the p r o g r a m w a s a n e x p e r i m e n t in f o r e i g n s t u d y a n d international living.

F o r t y s t u d e n t s f r o m 17 c o l l e g e s p a r t i c i p a t e d in this y e a r ' s p r o g r a m . It b e g a n with a f o u r - w e e k s t u d y t o u r , i n c l u d i n g the t r a n s a t l a n t i c c r o s s i n g o n the s t u d e n t s h i p M. S. A u r e l i a . T h i s w a s followed by a six-week a c a d e m i c s e s s i o n in V i e n n a at the Institute of E u r o p e a n S t u d i e s , a n d a twoweek p e r i o d of o p p o r t u n i t y f o r f r e e t r a v e l b e f o r e r e g r o u p i n g in L o n d o n for t h e r e t u r n f l i g h t to New York.

T H E G R O U P w a s divided into two s t u d y t o u r g r o u p s . T r a v e l t h r o u g h Western G e r m a n y , I t a l y a n d A u s t r i a w a s i n c l u d e d o n the i t i n e r a r y of the Western T o u r , while P o l a n d a n d the Soviet U n i o n were v i s i t e d o n the E a s t e r n T o u r .

T h e 2 0 s t u d e n t s of the W e s t e r n tour traveled b y bus, visiting the German cities of K o t h e n b u r g , N u r n b e r g a n d M u n i c h , a s well a s the I t a l i a n cities of V e n i c e , Florence and Verona, before journ e y i n g t h r o u g h A u s t r i a to its c a p i tal city of V i e n n a .

Twenty students, a c c o m p a n i e d b y Mr. a n d M r s . M i c h a e l Petrov i c h , t r a v e l e d i n t o t h e U . S . S . R. T h i s w a s the f i r s t t i m e the V i e n n a S u m m e r School included this m a j o r w o r l d p o w e r o n its i t i n e r a r y .

T r a v e l i n g with a n A u s t r i a n g u i d e a n d a Soviet K o m s o m a l student guide, the g r o u p m a d e their w a y t h r o u g h the c o u n t r y , s p e n d i n g m o s t of their t i m e in L e n i n g r a d and Moscow.

T H E G R O U P S itinerary was e n t i r e l y u p to t h e d i s c r e t i o n of t h e Soviet student travel b u r e a u . Sputn i k . N e v e r t h e l e s s , the visit in the S o v i e t U n i o n w a s filled with o p p o r t u n i t i e s to o b s e r v e a n d p a r t i c i p a t e in the life of the Soviet p e o p l e , a s well a s to s u r v e y t h e i r p a s t a s is reflected in t h e i r h i s t o r y , a r t a n d architecture.

C o n f r o n t a t i o n with C o m m u n i s t ideology, a s articulated by the p e o p l e a n d a s effected b y the K r e lin l e a d e r s h i p , w a s m a d e p o s s i b l e b y d i s c u s s i o n s with S o v i e t stud e n t s a n d b y g u i d e d t o u r s of places of interest, s u c h a s the K r e m lin, the s e a t of Soviet a u t h o r i t y .

After a d a y in t h e U k r a i n i a n city of K i e v , t h e g r o u p t r a v e l e d to Vienna.

In V i e n n a , the s t u d e n t s lived in city a p a r t m e n t s a n d h a d the opp o r t u n i t y to s t u d y l i t e r a t u r e , hist o r y , m u s i c , a r t , d r a m a a n d the G e r m a n language. The students w e r e t r e a t e d to a n u m b e r of s p e c i a l e x c u r s i o n s i n c l u d i n g a visit t o the m o n a s t e r y of Melk on t h e D a n u b e River, a n d lectures o n t o p i c s r a n g i n g f r o m the W o r l d

U p w a r d B o u n d is a n a t i o n w i d e p r o g r a m r u n b y the F e d e r a l Office of E c o n o m i c O p p o r t u n i t y a s a p a r t of the W a r o n P o v e r t y .

A c c o r d i n g to Rev. W i l l i a m s , the a i m of U p w a r d B o u n d is to prep a r e f o r college e n t r a n c e h i g h school students from poverty b a c k g r o u n d s who are now doing markedly poorer academically than they could potentially d o a n d who, when given a different e n v i r o n m e n t a n d a new o p p o r t u n i t y , c o u l d s u c c e e d in s c h o o l a n d g o o n to college.

The Upward Bound p r o g r a m on H o p e ' s c a m p u s w i l l b r i n g v o u n g p e o p l e to H o l l a n d f r o m a r a d i u s of fity m i l e s f o r its eightweek s u m m e r p r o g r a m .

T h e s t u d e n t s to p a r t i c i p a t e in this p r o g r a m a r e selected b y t h e i r high school counselors, principals a n d c o m m u n i t y service o r g a n i z a tions. T h e y o u n g p e o p l e a r e rec o m m e n d e d o n the b a s i s of p o t e n tial a n d their u n d e r p r i v i l e g e d background.

F r a n k l i n also broke school passing records last year a n d a v e r a g e d s o m e 3 0 points a g a m e . Their q u a r t e r b a c k a l o n e a v e r a g e d close to 2 0 0 y a r d s passing a game. The big job for the H o p e d e f e n s e will b e to k e y on F r a n k l i n ' s passing attack.
