Board grants faculty votes At its a n n u a l s p r i n g m e e t i n g , t h e H o p e College B o a r d of T r u s t ees agreed to place two faculty m e m b e r s o n the b o a r d as v o t i n g members.
Congress, sent a letter to Board Chairman Hugh DePree requesting permission to attend the February meeting.
T H E T R U S T E E S also a c t e d favorably on a request to allow s t u d e n t s t o sit in o n the b o a r d w i t h o u t v o t i n g privileges.
Following that letter, the Congress formally requested that s t u d e n t s be p e r m i t t e d t o sit in o n Board meetings.
The Professional Interest C o m m i t t e e of t h e f a c u l t y will nominate four faculty members, t w o of w h o m will be e l e c t e d t o t h e B o a r d t o serve t w o - y e a r t e r m s w i t h all t h e r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s a n d privileges of B o a r d m e m b e r s . Hope College granted charter for Phi Beta Kappa chapter H o p e C o l l e g e ' s m e m b e r s of t h e Phi Beta Kappa professional scholastic fraternity were officially c h a r t e r e d F r i d a y by t h e o r g a n ization's international council, m e e t i n g in B l o o m i n g t o n , I n d . "THIS IS T H E f o r e m o s t acad e m i c g r o u p , a n d m e m b e r s h i p in it is r e c o g n i z e d w o r l d - w i d e , " said Dr. David M a r k e r , a s s o c i a t e p r o f e s s o r of p h y s i c s a n d c o o r d i n a t o r of t h e e f f o r t t o s e e k Phi B e t a Kappa recognition. Marker said that an i n s t i t u t i o n may only a p p l y for m e m b e r s h i p o n c e every t h r e e y e a r s , a n d t h a t this is t h e t h i r d t i m e H o p e h a s a p p l i e d . " M a n y c o l l e g e s try f o u r a n d five t i m e s t o be a c c e p t e d as members," Marker stated. "We're h a p p y t h a t we were c h a r t e r e d o n our third t r y . " ACCORDING TO Marker, applicant institutions must submit e x t e n s i v e i n f o r m a t i o n a n d fill o u t e l a b o r a t e f o r m s in o r d e r t o be considered for m e m b e r s h i p . Only p r e s e n t m e m b e r s of Phi Beta Kappa may petition for a charter. T h e s c h o o l is t h e n v i s i t e d by a t e a m of Phi B e t a K a p p a m e m b e r s . They report to the national council, w h i c h in t u r n c h a r t e r s o r refuses to c h a r t e r the institution.

With its n e w c h a r t e r s t a t u s , t h e Hope chapter may elect n e w m e m b e r s t o P h i B e t a K a p p a based o n a c a d e m i c a c h i e v e m e n t . Strict requirements are followed in nominating students for members h i p in t h e g r o u p . USUALLY , students are awarded the h o n o r shortly before g r a d u a t i o n , a l t h o u g h t h e y can b e c o m e m e m b e r s as early as t h e i r junior year. " T h i s is a w a y of r e c o g n i z i n g t h e a c a d e m i c a c h i e v e m e n t s of o u r s t u d e n t s in a w a y t h a t has a world-wide r e p u t a t i o n , " Marker s a i d . " F a c u l t y h o n o r s is s o m e thing we do at H o p e College, but it m a y m e a n l i t t l e o r n o t h i n g t o p e o p l e o u t s i d e t h e C o l l e g e . Phi Beta K a p p a m e m b e r s , h o w e v e r , a r e r e c o g n i z e d e v e r y w h e r e , " he added. "In addition, our own chapter of Phi B e t a K a p p a is a t e s t a m e n t t o t h e high a c a d e m i c s t a n d a r d s of the College," Marker concluded.

T h e l e c t u r e , p r e s e n t e d by t h e C o l l e g e C u l t u r a l A f f a i r s C o m m i t t e e , is s c h e d u l e d t o begin at 8 : 3 0 p . m . THIS L E C T U R E is j u s t o n e stop on Paulsen's nation-wide tour of colleges a n d u n i v e r s i t i e s d u r i n g the 1970-71 school year. Paulsen himself introduces his l e c t u r e series as a " p r e s e n t a t i o n of m i x e d m e d i a a n d m e t a p h o r s . . . as revol u t i o n a r y t o o u r t e c h n o l o g i c a l age as ' w o r k s in a d r a w e r . ' "
Critics have finally p u t Paulsen in t h e b i g - t i m e a n d h a v e c h a r a c t e r i z e d h i m as a " c o m e d i a n w i t h sad eyes and b o d y to m a t c h w h o , with unglib-looking, leathery, beat f a c e c a n get a l a u g h w i t h o u t telling a j o k e . " B u t f a m e a n d f o r t u n e weren't pyernight victories for Paulsen. HE D I S C O V E R E D his i n t e r e s t in a p e r f o r m i n g c a r e e r while in c o l l e g e a n d q u i t t o j o i n a little t h e a t r e in C a l i f o r n i a . T h e p r o j e c t failed to bring him i m m e d i a t e s u c c e s s , so h e r e t i r e d f o r a w h i l e t o f a c t o r y w o r k in C a l i f o r n i a a n d Nevada.
