Board grants faculty votes At its a n n u a l s p r i n g m e e t i n g , t h e H o p e College B o a r d of T r u s t ees agreed to place two faculty m e m b e r s o n the b o a r d as v o t i n g members.

Congress, sent a letter to Board Chairman Hugh DePree requesting permission to attend the February meeting.

T H E T R U S T E E S also a c t e d favorably on a request to allow s t u d e n t s t o sit in o n the b o a r d w i t h o u t v o t i n g privileges.

Following that letter, the Congress formally requested that s t u d e n t s be p e r m i t t e d t o sit in o n Board meetings.

The Professional Interest C o m m i t t e e of t h e f a c u l t y will nominate four faculty members, t w o of w h o m will be e l e c t e d t o t h e B o a r d t o serve t w o - y e a r t e r m s w i t h all t h e r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s a n d privileges of B o a r d m e m b e r s .

T H E B O A R D also invited the faculty to appoint one m e m b e r to serve as a liaison a n d r e s o u r c e person for each standing c o m m i t tee of t h e b o a r d .

Hope College granted charter for Phi Beta Kappa chapter H o p e C o l l e g e ' s m e m b e r s of t h e Phi Beta Kappa professional scholastic fraternity were officially c h a r t e r e d F r i d a y by t h e o r g a n ization's international council, m e e t i n g in B l o o m i n g t o n , I n d .

Marker said that an i n s t i t u t i o n may only a p p l y for m e m b e r s h i p o n c e every t h r e e y e a r s , a n d t h a t this is t h e t h i r d t i m e H o p e h a s a p p l i e d . " M a n y c o l l e g e s try f o u r a n d five t i m e s t o be a c c e p t e d as members," Marker stated. "We're h a p p y t h a t we were c h a r t e r e d o n our third t r y . " ACCORDING TO Marker, applicant institutions must submit e x t e n s i v e i n f o r m a t i o n a n d fill o u t e l a b o r a t e f o r m s in o r d e r t o be considered for m e m b e r s h i p . Only p r e s e n t m e m b e r s of Phi Beta Kappa may petition for a charter.

USUALLY , students are awarded the h o n o r shortly before g r a d u a t i o n , a l t h o u g h t h e y can b e c o m e m e m b e r s as early as t h e i r junior year. " T h i s is a w a y of r e c o g n i z i n g t h e a c a d e m i c a c h i e v e m e n t s of o u r s t u d e n t s in a w a y t h a t has a world-wide r e p u t a t i o n , " Marker s a i d . " F a c u l t y h o n o r s is s o m e thing we do at H o p e College, but it m a y m e a n l i t t l e o r n o t h i n g t o p e o p l e o u t s i d e t h e C o l l e g e . Phi Beta K a p p a m e m b e r s , h o w e v e r , a r e r e c o g n i z e d e v e r y w h e r e , " he added.

"In addition, our own chapter of Phi B e t a K a p p a is a t e s t a m e n t t o t h e high a c a d e m i c s t a n d a r d s of the College," Marker concluded.

THIS L E C T U R E is j u s t o n e stop on Paulsen's nation-wide tour of colleges a n d u n i v e r s i t i e s d u r i n g the 1970-71 school year. Paulsen himself introduces his l e c t u r e series as a " p r e s e n t a t i o n of m i x e d m e d i a a n d m e t a p h o r s . . . as revol u t i o n a r y t o o u r t e c h n o l o g i c a l age as ' w o r k s in a d r a w e r . ' "

The resolution was unanimously adopted a n d r e a d s as follows: " T h i s is a t i m e in o u r n a t i o n ' s history when responsible students all over t h e c o u n t r y have b e c o m e intensely c o n c e r n e d about the c o u r s e o u r g o v e r n m e n t has t a k e n in S o u t h e a s t Asia a n d w h e n tensions w i t h i n o u r c o u n t r y are t h r e a t e n i n g t o drive w e d g e s bet w e e n large g r o u p s of p e o p l e , often causing incidents erupting into violence and death. T h e m o v e m a r k s t h e first t i m e in 51 y e a r s t h a t Hope has had a n o n - c o m p u l s o r y chapel system.

Health services revamped H e a l t h services at t h e s t u d e n t clinic a r e n o w u n d e r t h e s u p e r vision of a five m a n t e a m of local physicians.

T h e d o c t o r s will h a n d l e all s t u d e n t h e a l t h p r o b l e m s as well as c o o r d i n a t e a n d d i r e c t clinic services a n d s t a f f .

THE C H A N G E c a m e a b o u t a f t e r t h e D e a n of S t u d e n t s ' o f f i c e received numerous complaints a b o u t t h e clinic. U n d e r t h e old system, one doctor provided m e d i c a l service f o r s t u d e n t s t w o hours a day. " W e felt t h a t t h e d o c t o r we h a d o n o u r s t a f f w a s t o o old t o continue," Dean of Students R o b e r t D e Y o u n g said. "We s o u g h t a n o t h e r p h y s i c i a n w h o c o u l d give service a n d a d m i n i s t r a t i v e a d v i c e , b u t m o s t local d o c t o r s e i t h e r did n o t h a v e e n o u g h t i m e or w e r e t o o expensive," DeYoung stated. " U P O N T H E advice of Dr. V e r n o n B o e r s m a , we d e c i d e d t o f o r m a c o u n c i l of five d o c t o r s w h o will see s t u d e n t s a n d s u p e r vise the clinic f a c i l i t i e s , " he added.

In N o v e m b e r , 1 9 6 7 , t h e S t u d e n t S e n a t e p a s s e d a m o t i o n rec o m m e n d i n g that the R L C review t h e e n t i r e q u e s t i o n of c o m p u l s o r y c h a p e l . T h e R L C c a r r i e d o n it dialogue t h r o u g h o u t the entire year and finally r e c o m m e n d e d t h a t t h e s t u d e n t b o d y be given t h e chance to elect a required lecture series i n s t e a d of r e q u i r e d c h a p e l .

Open letter to freshmen Welcome t o Hope College. Y o u have selected this i n s t i t u t i o n as the place t o c o n t i n u e y o u r education. A n d n o w , even d u r i n g t h e first week on campus, y o u w i l l realize that you have n o t come t o college, y o u have become a part of Hope College.

D u r i n g the t i m e you are here, you should be aware that the i n s t i t u t i o n exists f o r y o u , the student. Y o u are not a cog in a

Y o u are not the slave of an overbearing f a c u l t y , you are partners w i t h the professorial staff in a venture of learning and experiencing. Most i m p o r t a n t l y , y o u are n o t an independent e n t i t y , you are a part of a student b o d y , and through it, a responsible sector of the College.

This is not mere rhetoric. The principles e x p o u n d e d here are those that led a special c o m m i t t e e several years ago to initiate a f o r m of college governance that made student o p i n i o n an integral part of every p o l i c y and decision. A f t e r the c o m m i t t e e structure's first year of operation in

1969-70, it became apparent t h a t t h e fly in the o i n t m e n t was a f a c u l t y veto of all decisions. The a b o l i t i o n of t h a t veto w i l l be a goal actively sought this year by the Student Congress, numerous f a c u l t y members and this newspaper.

C u r r i c u l u m and calendar r e f o r m w i l l be topics of extensive discussion for at least t w o m o n t h s . A student voice in open hearings and meetings is indispensable. The up-dating of social rules, likewise, is a c o n t i n u i n g process that calls for studentoriginated ideas and proposals.

Y o u must not underestimate either the power y o u have to change or to support the goals of this college, or the responsibility y o u have t o insure that those goals are not betrayed. If you w a n t to k n o w the reasoning behind decisions and policies made this year, y o u must demand answers.

If y o u have complaints, y o u should not hesitate to express t h e m . The Student Congress w i l l speak for y o u , or y o u can go directly to any c o m m i t t e e or board meeting to listen and be heard.

A n o t h e r proposal that was considered was switching one or m o r e men's housing with equivalent female housing space. Anstandig said that Gilmore Hall c o u l d house m e n and the f r a t e r n i t y complex c o u l d house some wom e n , f o r e x a m p l e .
