Yacht Gift Launches Course Hope College h a s officially launched an inter-disciplinary m a r i n e p r o g r a m , t h a n k s to the gift to the C o l l e g e of e x p r e s s cruiser, " I n f i n i t y H o p e " b y H o l l a n d b u s i n e s s m a n Edwin Raphael.

T H E OWENS ELVING bridge c r u i s e r is e q u i p p e d with two 2 11 h o r s e p o w e r engines.

Its c a b i n h a s s l e e p i n g a c c o m m o d a t i o n s for six a n d c o m p l e t e kitchen facilities.

It will c a r r y a crew of five, a l o n g with 10 t o 15 s t u d e n t s .

The b o a t is e q u i p p e d with its o w n p o w e r g e n e r a t o r , a ship-tos h o r e r a d i o and'-a depth finder.

The inter-disciplinary marine p r o g r a m is expected to collectively benefit s e v e r a l a c a d e m i c d e p a r t ments.

IT W I L L B E of special interest t o the C o l l e g e ' s g e o l o g y d e p a r t m e n t which c u r r e n t l y h a s a n oceanographic study course.

Practical e x p e r i e n c e o n the b o a t , a c c o r d i n g to d e p a r t m e n t c h a i r m a n Dr. Cotte r T h a r i n , will a l l o w s t u d e n t s to s t u d y the w a t e r q u a l i ties, c u r r e n t s a n d b o t t o m s of b o t h Lake Michigan and L a k e Macatawa.

H o p e C o l l e g e , which is i d e a l l y s i t u a t e d f o r the project with two l a k e s n e a r b y , is the o n l y c o l l e g e in the G r e a t L a k e s C o l l e g e s A s s o c i a t i o n with access to a n y b o d y of water.

In the p a s t G L C A s t u d e n t s interested in o c e a n o g r a p h y h a u to be sent to s t u d y in C a l i f o r n i a .

H o p e y a c h t is of p o t e n t i a l service t o H o p e ' s a s s o c i a t e s c h o o l s in the GLCA. T H E GEOLOGY department, e s t a b l i s h e d two y e a r s a g o , recently a d d e d Dr. William F r e n c h , a n ex perienced o c e a n o g r a p h i c s u r v e y o r , to its f a c u l t y . Dr. F r e n c h w a s a m e m b e r of the U.S. N a v y o c e a n o g r a p h i c staff a n d w a s in c h a r g e of scientific p e r s o n n e l o n the n a v a l r e s e a r c h vessel Silas Bent in the Western Pacific b e f o r e c o m i n g to H o p e .

Dr. T h a r i n a n d Dr. F r e n c h will w o r k t o g e t h e r o n the new m a r i n e program.

A n o t h e r m e m b e r of the H o p e f a c u l t y , Dr. D a v i d H. Klein, is c u r r e n t l y c o n d u c t i n g r e s e a r c h in the field of c h e m i c a l o c e a n o g r a p h y at the S c r i p p s Institution of O c e a n o g r a p h y in L a J o l l a d u r i n g a y e a r ' s l e a v e of a b s e n c e .

FOR F I N A L A P P R O V A L i n t h e RCA, the p l a n for m e r g e r r e q u i r e s a D e c l a r a t i v e Act b y the d e l e g a t e s of the next G e n e r a l S y n o d m e e t i n g . " T h i s f i n a l a p p r o v a l is m a i n l y r o u t i n e , " s t a t e d Rev. G o r d o n L. V a n O o s t e n b u r g , p a s t o r of T r i n ity R e f o r m e d C h u r c h in H o l l a n d . " I t ' s v e r y r a r e that if the c l a s s e s a p p r o v e a p l a n , the G e n e r a l Synod will n o t , " Rev. V a n Oostenburg added.

"However, this w o u l d m a k e the a d o p t i o n of the plan official."

T h e r e h a s been m u c h c o n t r o v e r sy in the R C A r e g a r d i n g t h e m e r i t s of such a m e r g e r . O v e r t u r e s , or petitions, w e r e b r o u g h t b e f o r e the G e n e r a l S y n o d this s u m m e r b y Classes or Particular S y n o d s who wished either p l a n s f o r m e r g e r to cease or to proceed rapidly.

T H E C L A S S I S OF Z eel a n d petitioned the G e n e r a l S y n o d to " c e a s e all a c t i o n s l o o k i n g f o r w a r u t o w a r d s c o n s u m m a t i o n of the present p r o p o s e d m e r g e r with o r j o i n ing in a n d a n n e x i n g of the R C A to the P r e s b y t e r i a n C h u r c h U S . " The C l a s s i s of Z e e l a n d o p p o s e s the m e r g e r b e c a u s e the PC US " g o a l is t h a t of a ' s u p e r ' Protestant c h u r c h o r even t h e ' o n e ' c h u r c h o r g a n i z a t i o n o n the b a s i s o f ' f e l lowship' and not'Biblical doctrine and truth.'"

Also, the Z e e l a n d C l a s s i s feels that t h e r e is " u n a l t e r i n g a p a t h y " p r e v a l e n t at the g r a s s r o o t s level of the R C A r a n k a n d file c o n s t i tuency t o w a r d p r o p o s e d a n n e x a tion to a n d m e r g e r with the PC US. " T H I S IS c o r r o b o r a t e d b y the g r a s s r o o t s v o t e of the C l a s s i s , " the Z e e l a n d C l a s s i s n o t e d , " t h e result of which is a s follows: Seventeen c h u r c h e s h a v e r e c o r d e d their v o t e s at p u b l i c w o r s h i p services, . . .with 2 , 9 5 8 v o t i n g to

r e m a i n in the R C A a n d 1 6 0 preferring merger."

In a d d i t i o n , the Z e e l a n d C l a s s i s o p p o s e s m e r g e r b e c a u s e the C o m mittee of 24 c r e a t e d a new ' u n i c a m e r a l g o v e r n i n g b o d y " to rule the c h u r c h . T h e r e f o r e , t h e r e will b e n o d e a c o n s in the new m e r g e d church. Zeeland Classis stated, " W i t h a q u i c k a c t i o n , the B i b l i c a l office is n o m o r e in the c h u r c h . " T h e Z e e l a n d C l a s s i s feels t h a t the r e s t r u c t u r i n g f o r the s a k e of efficiency will be a " d u p l i c a t i o n of effort a n d w o r k . " THE ZEELAND CLASSIS a l s o a s k e d the G e n e r a l S y n o d to c e a s e all a c t i o n s c o n n e c t e d with the p l a n of u n i o n b e c a u s e of a n e w a g r e e m e n t p r o v i d i n g f o r withdrawal.

T h i s new w i t h d r a w a l a g r e e m e n t will b r i n g all new c o n g r e g a t i o n s of b o t h c o m m u n i o n s into the new c h u r c h f o r a p e r i o d of o n e y e a r . T h e Z e e l a n d C l a s s i s n o t e d , " T h i s w o u l d put the withd r a w i n g c h u r c h in the s e c o n d y e a r a schismatic g r o u p . " " T h i s d e s i r e d e n d of this p r o p o s ed m e r g e r is that the k i n g d o m of G o d will be m o r e effectively realize d , " s a i d Rev. V a n O o s t e n b u r g . Black Students Organize New 'Black Coalition'' A p p r o x i m a t e l y two w e e k s a g o , a n u m b e r of b l a c k s t u d e n t s o n H o p e ' s c a m p u s f o r m e d an o r g a n i z a t i o n called the B l a c k C o a l i t i o n .

The group's purpose, according t o its l e a d e r s , is to " a t t e m p t to meet c e r t a i n n e e d s of the b l a c k s t u d e n t s at H o p e . " " T h e c o a l i t i o n c o n s i s t s of m a n y b l a c k s d i s c u s s i n g their i d e a s a n d o p i n i o n s o n the s i t u a t i o n s o n c a m p u s that affect t h e m p e r s o n a l l y , " they said.

T h e l e a d e r s feel t h a t the B l a c k Coalition will benefit Hope C o l l e g e b y e n h a n c i n g the r e l a t i o n • h i p between b l a c k a n d white students.

D u r i n g the s u m m e r , s l i g h t l y more than $800 was withdrawn f r o m the H H H a c c o u n t f o r cons t r u c t i o n of the s c h o o l o v e r the s i g n a t u r e s of Rex L. S e a r s o n a n d A n a t o l e Bilecky, a c c o r d i n g to a letter d a t e d Sept. 2 f r o m M a r k S. Christie, D e p u t y P r o v i n c e Senior A d v i s o r f o r L o n g K h a n h province.

T H E A G R E E M E N T MADEbetween U S A ID a n d Wesley Michaels o n , S e n a t e President w h e n the project w a s initiated, specified that the s i g n a t u r e s of b o t h Mr. S e a r s o n a n d H a r v e y P. C l a r k , two USA1D officials in L o n g K h a n h , were needed t o w i t h d r a w m o n e y .

The letter from Mr. Christie to Mr. Michaelson stated that, "although Mr. Bilecky is not authorized to m a k e w i t h d r a w a l s , the transaction w a s a l l o w e d b y officials of the Bank b e c a u s e of the immediate need for f u n d s . " Authorization for Mr. Bilecky was requested in the letter.

The American Conmninity When the first Dutch settlers pioneered to H o l l a n d , M i c h i g a n , t h e y determined to f o r m a c l o s e d society, a c o m m u n i t y of i n t e r e s t s a n d v a l u e s s t r o n g e n o u g h to withs t a n d the w i l d e r n e s s a r o u n d t h e m .

In m a n y w a y s this s a m e a t t i t u d e p e r m e a t e s H o l l a n d a n d o t h e r similar A m e r i c a n c o m m u n i t i e s to this d a y . T h e s e communities, for most of their i n h a b i t a n t s , a r e o r g a n i z e d a t t e m p t s to relate a n d c o p e with the l a r g e r e x t e r n a l w o r l d .

A M E R I C A HAS B E E N a c o m m u n i t y e n t e r p r i s e f r o m the s t a r t .

T h e P u r i t a n c i t y o n the Hill is a f o r b e a r e r of the H a i g h t - A s h b u r y l o v e c o m m u n i t y ( t h o u g h this m a y be a n unfair c o m p a r i s o n ! ) .

As the American created his c h u r c h a n d state h e t o o k f o r g r a n t ed his c a p a c i t y to c r e a t e all lesser i n s t i t u t i o n s a n d a s s o c i a t i o n s . In the last c e n t u r y c o m m u n i t y life a l o n g i n s t i t u t i o n a l lines h a s g r e a t ly i n c r e a s e d .

A c o m m u n i t y in this sense is a v o l u n t a r y institution, t h e c l u b y o u b e l o n g to, y o u r f r a t e r n i t y , y o u r j o b , y o u r town o r y o u r s c h o o l .

T o b e a c o m m u n i t y t h e r e m u s t be p e r s o n a l c o n t a c t with o t h e r m e m b e r s of the c o m m u n i t y b y a s s o c i a tion. H o p e College is such a c o m munity.

A N Y C O M M U N I T Y IS the re^ suit of the c o m p r o m i s e a n d c l a s h of two b a s i c A m e r i c a n c h a r a c t e r istics—individualism and conformity. Just asthe American treas u r e s the i d e a l s of i n d i v i d u a l freed o m a n d e q u a l i t y , h e f e a r s criticism of these beliefs a n d p r a i s e s c o n f o r m i t y to his ideals.

A c o m m u n i t y is a l s o an a t t e m p t to p r o v i d e a s e c u r e f r a m e of r e ference. T h e c o m m u n i t y b o u n d a r i e s p r o v i d e limits f o r the u n k n o w n s the i n d i v i d u a l m u s t face.

On a b r o a d scale o u r entire society is s o o r g a n i z e d . T h e A m e r i c a n e x p e r i e n c e of e x p a n d i n g f r o n tiers often necessitated c o m m u n a l living. T h e v e r y n e w n e s s of the n a tion itself resulted in the p r i m a c y of g r o u p u n d e r t a k i n g s .

A N D WE E E E L insecure. We b r o k e with E u r o p e a n d feel cult u r a l l y i n f e r i o r . We a r e a d i v e r s e m i x t u r e of n a t i o n a l e l e m e n t s . O u r m o b i l e society l e a v e s u s r o o t l e s s compared with tradition-and land-bound Europe.

T h e p r o b l e m is we a r e l i v i n g in a w o r l d we often c a n n o t c o n t r o l , yet need t o relate o u r s e l v e s to this u n k n o w n . So the c o m m u n i t y bec o m e s a f o r m of protective c o a t ing. We s u b o r d i n a t e s o m e of o u r

o w n wishes t o the h i g h e r g r o u p morality.

A n d in a w a y , this is n e c e s s a r y .

O u r w o r l d is t o o c o m p l e x to be understood a n d too impersonal f o r o n e c o m m u n i t y . We w a n t to o r g a n i z e o u r existence.

OUR VOLUNTARY assoc i a t i o n with H o p e C o l l e g e prov i d e s p r o t e c t i o n a n d s a f e t y a s well a s the benefits of a n y c o m m u n i t y .

T h e p r o b l e m a r i s e s a s we realize the b a s i c t e n s i o n within the c o m m u n i t y . C e r t a i n l y it d o e s g i v e us a f r a m e w o r k , in o u r c a s e f o r educ a t i o n . But c e r t a i n of o u r indiv i d u a l g o a l s m u s t c h a n g e to ins u r e h a r m o n y . A n d the results a r e often f r i g h t e n i n g .

We a r e a w a r e of the c o n t r a d i c tion between the i d e a l s of t h e c o m m u n i t y a n d o u r o w n v a l u e s . Our p e r s o n a l s e c u r i t y b e g i n s to h i n g e o n c o m m u n i t y s o l i d a r i t y . Dissension becomes a n a t h e m a . Thecomm u n i t y g o a l s r e p l a c e o u r own completely. And individuality can b e c o m e a cult of c o n f o r m i t y .

T H E R E IS N O need t o point to the J o s e p h M c C a r t h y h e a r i n g s of the l a s t g e n e r a t i o n . We c a n w a t c h o u r television sets d u r i n g a n a t i o n a l c o n v e n t i o n to see ind i v i d u a l r i g h t s ( p r o t e c t e d b y society, f o r s o c i e t y ) b e a t e n d o w n .

R e s t r a i n t a n d criticism a r e interpreted a s b r u t a l i t y a n d repression.

A n d these r a d i c a l H o p e s t u d e n t s w h o protest, not r e l i g i o n , b u t tradition? The c a m p u s c o m m u n i t y s h a k e s v i s i b l y . And r e s p o n s i b l e criticism is limited to a few English c o u r s e s . Is it t h a t difficult to s e p a r a t e criticism of s t r u c t u r e

f r o m criticism of v a l u e s ? Or h a s the s t r u c t u r e b e c o m e m o r e t h a n a m e a n s to an end?

OF C O U R S E T H E i n d i v i d u a l m u s t r e l i n q u i s h c e r t a i n r i g h t s to g a i n o t h e r s . But h i s s u b s e r v i e n c e to c o m m u n i t y s t r u c t u r e s c a n result in a c o m p l e t e l o s s of p e r s o n a l identity. Often a p r i o r c o n d i t i o n f o r b e i n g p a r t of the s y s t e m is to compromise many individual principles. And the university c a n b e w e l l - s t r u c t u r e d , well-tooled, to t u r n out p e o p l e with all the s h a r p e d g e s w o r n off, the w e l l - r o u n d e d person.

Our c o m m u n i t i e s are n e c e s s a r y to o r g a n i z e c o m p l e x i t y . It r e m a i n s the i n d i v i d u a l ' s t a s k to s e p a r a t e h i s o w n identity f r o m the g r o u p identity. If the c o m m u n i t y prev e n t s u s f r o m d o i n g so, f r o m rea l i z i n g o u r full p o t e n t i a l , it is n o l o n g e r a s t r u c t u r e within which we c a n d e v e l o p . It b e c o m e s , i n s t e a d , a s t r u c t u r e to w h i c h we cling f o r meaning.

C o m m u n i t i e s a n d institutions c a n n o t g i v e m e a n i n g to o u r existence b y t h e m s e l v e s . O n l y the i n d i v i d u a l s which f o r m t h e m c a n d o that.

S o m e c o e d s m o v e d this p a s t w e e k e n d , stated Miss S p r i k , b u t the m a j o r i t y of the g i r l s n o w d o n o t w a n t to m o v e . Miss S p r i k felt t h a t the r e a s o n f o r this w a s t h a t it is t o o difficult t o d e c i d e which of the g i r l s s h o u l d be m o v e d , d u e to the f r i e n d s h i p s t h a t h a v e dev e l o p e d d u r i n g the first few w e e k s of s c h o o l . T h e g i r l s s e e m to prefer the c r o w d e d c o n d i t i o n to losing a r o o m m a t e , s a i d Miss S p r i k . " T h e d e c i s i o n , w h e t h e r to m o v e o r s t a y , is u p to the g i r l s . " s h e said.

A c c o r d i n g to M i c h a e l G e r r i e , Acting A s s o c i a t e D e a n of S t u d e n t s , the s i t u a t i o n in m e n ' s h o u s i n g h a s been improved. The extra men w h o w e r e put in the c o t t a g e s h a v e been provided alternate housing.

At p r e s e n t , t h e r e a r e five r o o m s a v a i l a b l e on c a m p u s f o r m e n , d u e to s t u d e n t s l e a v i n g s c h o o l .

A l t h o u g h the e x a c t l o c a t i o n of the c o f f e e h o u s e h a s not been d e t e r m i n e d , R o b b A d a m s , c o - c h a i r m a n of the coffeehouse 1 p r o j e c t c o m m i t t e e , i n d i c a t e d t h a t it will p r o b a b l y be s o m e w h e r e o n campus.

I h i s h a s l o n g constituted a g r e a t m i s u s e of o n e of the nat i o n ' s s t r o n g e s t i n s t i t u t i o n s , its colleges.

In a d d i t i o n , m u c h y o u n g p o t e n t i a l h a s gone untapped.

In recent y e a r s , e s p e c i a l l y , H o p e h a s sig n i f i c a n d y b r o a d e n e d the m a k e - u p oi its s t u d e n t b o d y t h r o u g h a p r o g r e s s i v e adm i s s i o n s p o l i c y . M u c h m o r e c a n be d o n e , h o w e v e r , a n d the i n c e p t i o n of a n U p w a r d B o u n d p r o g r a m t h i s y e a r is a l o n g s t e p

t o w a r d f u r t h e r i m p r o v e m e n t . T h i s new G L C A effort is a n o t h e r o p p o r t u n i t y w h i c h d e s e r v e s the full c o l l e g e s u p p o r t it is receiving.

B r i n g i n g m o r e s t u d e n t s f r o m widelyv a r i e d b a c k g r o u n d s to H o p e is a s g r e a t a n a d v a n t a g e t o the C o l l e g e a s it is to those students. Modern problems can only b e d e a l t with if c l e a r l y u n d e r s t o o d , a n d d i r e c t c o n t a c t with s t u d e n t s w h o g r e w u p with t h e p r o b l e m s w h i c h o u r s o c i e t y is t r y i n g to s o l v e c a n o n l y l e a d to g r e a t e r understanding and communication. The f o r m a t i o n of a B l a c k C o a l i t i o n , r e p o r t e d on p a g e o n e , is a n o t h e r d e v e l o p m e n t which we h o p e will l e a d to g r e a t e r u n d e r s t a n d i n g of t h e p r o b l e m s a n d g o a l s oi o u r b l a c k citizens.

We r e a l i z e t h a t all w o r k a n d n o p l a y m a k e s H a n s a d u l l b o y . B u t it s e e m s to u s t h a t H a n s , not the A d m i n i s t r a t i o n , s h o u l d b e a b l e to d e c i d e f o r himself w h e n t h a t p l a y will c o m e . It's h a r d t o believe the Soviet U n i o n w o u l d i n v a d e a c o u n t r y the size of Czechos l o v a k i a w i t h o u t a decent c o v e r s t o r y .

O r i g i n a l l y , if y o u recall, the Soviets a n n o u n c e d they w e r e c o m i n g into the c o u n try with o t h e r W a r s a w Pact t r o o p s at the r e q u e s t of C z e c h o s l o v a k l e a d e r s . But s o m e o n e g o o f e d , b e c a u s e when R u s s i a n s were a s k e d at the U n i t e d N a t i o n s w h o the Czech l e a d e r s were, the Soviets c o u l d n ' t c o m e u p with o n e n a m e .

THEN THERUSSIANSchangedtheir s t o r y a n d s a i d t h e y were i n v a d i n g C z e c h o s l o v a k i a to p r e v e n t the C z e c h s f r o m b e i n g o v e r r u n b y t h e West G e r m a n s . When t h i s o n e w a s sent u p the f l a g pole a n d n o o n e s a l u t e d , the S o v i e t s f i n a l l y s a i d t h e y h a d invaded C z e c h o s l o v a k i a to protect t h e Czechs f r o m themselves.

F o r s o m e r e a s o n the w o r l d h a s n ' t b o u g h t it, a n d s o the R u s s i a n s a r e still h a r d at w o r k in the K r e m l i n t r y i n g t o f i g u r e out a s t o r y that will j u s t i f y their occupation.

E a c h n o v e l exists p u r e l y a s a reflection of its a u t h o r a n d f u n c t i o n s a s a p l a y g r o u n d for his wit a n d c y n i c a l c l e v e r n e s s , his r a z o r s h a r p p o w e r s of o b s e r v a t i o n a n d his a l l - e m b r a c i n g e g o . He is the s u n of these w o r l d s , a n d e v e r y t u r n of p r a s e a n d p u n c t u a t i o n m a r k h a s life o n l y a s it p a r t a k e s of his g l o r y . N a b o k o v ' s n o v e l s are giant, mystical c r y p t o g r a m s w h i c h in the end spell out n o answers, o n l y the n a m e of the perp e t r a t o r of the m y s t e r y : N-A-BO-K-O-V. IF T H E N O V E L C A N b e understood as a battleground, Nab o k o v ' s r e p r e s e n t the s t r a n g e s t b a t t l e s ever f o u g h t . B e c a u s e his n o v e l s a r e N a b o k o v , the f o c u s

is n o t o n a conflict within the novel, between a p r o t a g o n i s t a n d a n t a g o n i s t , b u t between the overp o w e r i n g f o r c e s a n d r e s o u r c e s of the a u t h o r a n d his r e a d e r . Plots, structures, transitions and chara c t e r s a r e all p a w n s in the aut h o r ' s h a n d s in his u n w a v e r i n g a s s a u l t on his a u d i e n c e .

He d o e s not w a n t his r e a d e r to believe n e c e s s a r i l y in w h a t happ e n s in the n o v e l ; he w a n t s , rat h e r , t h a t he b e s t u n n e d a n d fasc i n a t e d b y its v e r y i m p r o b a b i l i t y .

A n d he defies his r e a d e r n o t merely to u n r a v e l the m y s t e r y b e h i n d his p r o s e ( w h i c h is i m p o s s i b l e e n o u g h ) b u t to s o l v e the puzzle of N a b o k o v himself.

W H A T M A K E S T H E S E bat ties even s t r a n g e r is the a u t h o r ' s d e c l a r a t i o n of the s u r r e n d e r of t h e r e a d e r b e f o r e he even r e a d s the first w o r d ; the defeat of the r e a d e r is a fait a c c o m p l i b e f o r e he even o p e n s the c o v e r of the b o o k . N a b o k o v r e f u s e s to g r a n t c o n c e s s i o n s o r relent o n e mom e n t in his a t t a c k . H e r e f u s e s to b i n d himself to the o r d i n a r y c o n v e n t i o n s of time a n d s p a c e ; with u n b l u s h i n g a r r o g a n c e he s w i t c h e s the s c e n e of a t t e n t i o n , t h r o w s m o n k e y w r e n c h e s into the machinery of plot a n d pulls all the s t r i n g s o n e v e r y p u p p e t c h a r a c t e r a n d piece of l i t e r a r y f u r n i t u r e to suit his c o n v e n i e n c e .

His p o i n t of view, that of the o m n i p r e s e n t first p e r s o n ( e v e n if he a p p e a r s to be t a l k i n g in the limited t h i r d at the t i m e ) , g i v e s him complete power and control o v e r the field of battle.

A N D AS T H O U G H all this w e r e not e n o u g h , he p r e p a r e s a n d e x e c u t e s with effortless f i n e s s e an a m b u s h f o r the r e a d e r at the t u r n of a l m o s t e v e r y p a g e . Or he c a n play ( a n d u s u a l l y d o e s ) the m a n u f a c t u r e r of g i a n t j i g s a w puzzles w h o , j u s t to m a k e t h i n g s m o r e interesting, not o n l y l e a v e s a h a l f - d o z e n k e y pieces out of the b o x b u t t h r o w s in pieces f r o m a n o t h e r puzzle to fill in the v a c a n cies.

B e f o r e such a n o n s l a u g h t the r e a d e r is a h o p e l e s s c a s e , indeed. " K i n g , Queen, K n a v e , " Nabok o v ' s s e c o n d n o v e l in R u s s i a n ( 1 9 2 8 ) , m a y a p p e a r at first g l a n c e to b e just a n o t h e r t r e a t m e n t of the a n c i e n t " e t e r n a l t r i a n g l e " theme: wife is u n s a t i s f i e d with h u s b a n d ( w h o , in this c a s e , is m o r e t h a n u s u a l l y u n o b s e r v a n t ) ; wife t a k e s l o v e r ( w h o , in this c a s e , h a p p e n s to be the h u s b a n d ' s n e p h e w ) ; wife a n d l o v e r ( w h o is, a l s o , m o r e than s o m e w h a t r i d i c u l o u s ) att e m p t to get rid of the h u s b a n d , h o p i n g to live in g r e a t bliss off the c a r c a s s of his estate.

ANYHOW, THIS LESSER k i n g ruled his g r e a t city w h i c h w a s called C h i c a g o , which is Indian for "stinking s w a m p . " The stink in the s w a m p h a d n ' t c h a n g e d m u c h since the k i n g l o o k the l a n d f r o m the I n d i a n s , o n l y he a d d e d s o m e p e r f u m e to hide the stench.

T h i s f o l l o w s t h e e l e c t i o n of r e p r e sentatives f r o m the v a r i o u s m e n ' s a n d w o m e n ' s residences which t o o k p l a c e this w e e k .

At t h i s m e e t i n g the S e n a t e will elect b o t h a r e c o r d i n g a n d a corr e s p o n d i n g s e c r e t a r y . It will a l s o c h o o s e t w o m e m b e r s - a t - l a r g e to s e r v e o n the e x e c u t i v e c o m m i t t e e of the S e n a t e .

Volpe at least h a s e x p e r i e n c e a n d a cert a i n p o s i t i o n of p a r t y l e a d e r s h i p .

R I C H A R D N I X O N IS a seas o n e d if not a l w a y s a skillful politician, a n d he m a y h o n e s t l y believe A g n e w to be the best m a n for the j o b . A lack of e x p e r i e n c e d o e s not n e c e s s a r i l y m e a n that a m a n will p e r f o r m p o o r l y in office, but this p o s i t i o n is f a r t o o critical to be used a s a testing g r o u n d f o r political t y r o s . F o r , a s the d e a t h of J o h n K e n n e d y b r o u g h t t r a g i c a l l y h o m e , t h e vice p r e s i d e n t is, indeed, a mere breath a w a y f r o m the White H o u s e .
