Yacht Gift Launches Course Hope College h a s officially launched an inter-disciplinary m a r i n e p r o g r a m , t h a n k s to the gift to the C o l l e g e of e x p r e s s cruiser, " I n f i n i t y H o p e " b y H o l l a n d b u s i n e s s m a n Edwin Raphael. T H E OWENS ELVING bridge c r u i s e r is e q u i p p e d with two 2 11 h o r s e p o w e r engines. Its c a b i n h a s s l e e p i n g a c c o m m o d a t i o n s for six a n d c o m p l e t e kitchen facilities. It will c a r r y a crew of five, a l o n g with 10 t o 15 s t u d e n t s . The b o a t is e q u i p p e d with its o w n p o w e r g e n e r a t o r , a ship-tos h o r e r a d i o and'-a depth finder. The inter-disciplinary marine p r o g r a m is expected to collectively benefit s e v e r a l a c a d e m i c d e p a r t ments.

O v e r t u r e s , or petitions, w e r e b r o u g h t b e f o r e the G e n e r a l S y n o d this s u m m e r b y Classes or Particular S y n o d s who wished either p l a n s f o r m e r g e r to cease or to proceed rapidly. T H E C L A S S I S OF Z eel a n d petitioned the G e n e r a l S y n o d to " c e a s e all a c t i o n s l o o k i n g f o r w a r u t o w a r d s c o n s u m m a t i o n of the present p r o p o s e d m e r g e r with o r j o i n ing in a n d a n n e x i n g of the R C A to the P r e s b y t e r i a n C h u r c h U S . " The C l a s s i s of Z e e l a n d o p p o s e s the m e r g e r b e c a u s e the PC US " g o a l is t h a t of a ' s u p e r ' Protestant c h u r c h o r even t h e ' o n e ' c h u r c h o r g a n i z a t i o n o n the b a s i s o f ' f e l lowship' and not'Biblical doctrine and truth.'" Also, the Z e e l a n d C l a s s i s feels that t h e r e is " u n a l t e r i n g a p a t h y " p r e v a l e n t at the g r a s s r o o t s level of the R C A r a n k a n d file c o n s t i tuency t o w a r d p r o p o s e d a n n e x a tion to a n d m e r g e r with the PC US. " T H I S IS c o r r o b o r a t e d b y the g r a s s r o o t s v o t e of the C l a s s i s , " the Z e e l a n d C l a s s i s n o t e d , " t h e result of which is a s follows: Seventeen c h u r c h e s h a v e r e c o r d e d their v o t e s at p u b l i c w o r s h i p services, . . .with 2 , 9 5 8 v o t i n g to
r e m a i n in the R C A a n d 1 6 0 preferring merger." In a d d i t i o n , the Z e e l a n d C l a s s i s o p p o s e s m e r g e r b e c a u s e the C o m mittee of 24 c r e a t e d a new ' u n i c a m e r a l g o v e r n i n g b o d y " to rule the c h u r c h . T h e r e f o r e , t h e r e will b e n o d e a c o n s in the new m e r g e d church. Zeeland Classis stated, " W i t h a q u i c k a c t i o n , the B i b l i c a l office is n o m o r e in the c h u r c h . " T h e Z e e l a n d C l a s s i s feels t h a t the r e s t r u c t u r i n g f o r the s a k e of efficiency will be a " d u p l i c a t i o n of effort a n d w o r k . " THE ZEELAND CLASSIS a l s o a s k e d the G e n e r a l S y n o d to c e a s e all a c t i o n s c o n n e c t e d with the p l a n of u n i o n b e c a u s e of a n e w a g r e e m e n t p r o v i d i n g f o r withdrawal. T h i s new w i t h d r a w a l a g r e e m e n t will b r i n g all new c o n g r e g a t i o n s of b o t h c o m m u n i o n s into the new c h u r c h f o r a p e r i o d of o n e y e a r . T h e Z e e l a n d C l a s s i s n o t e d , " T h i s w o u l d put the withd r a w i n g c h u r c h in the s e c o n d y e a r a schismatic g r o u p . " " T h i s d e s i r e d e n d of this p r o p o s ed m e r g e r is that the k i n g d o m of G o d will be m o r e effectively realize d , " s a i d Rev. V a n O o s t e n b u r g . Black Students Organize New 'Black Coalition'' A p p r o x i m a t e l y two w e e k s a g o , a n u m b e r of b l a c k s t u d e n t s o n H o p e ' s c a m p u s f o r m e d an o r g a n i z a t i o n called the B l a c k C o a l i t i o n . The group's purpose, according t o its l e a d e r s , is to " a t t e m p t to meet c e r t a i n n e e d s of the b l a c k s t u d e n t s at H o p e . " " T h e c o a l i t i o n c o n s i s t s of m a n y b l a c k s d i s c u s s i n g their i d e a s a n d o p i n i o n s o n the s i t u a t i o n s o n c a m p u s that affect t h e m p e r s o n a l l y , " they said.
