Faculty divided over word use Some offended by the term "exotic," used to announce a concert Matt Cook C A M P U S B E A T EDITOR
There is currently a debate among the faculty and staff of Hope College concerning the use of the term " e x o t i c , " b e c a u s e s o m e f i n d the word offensive to minorities. T h e discussion was sparked on Monday, September 18, when Paula Savaglio, instructor f o r world music and music theory, sent out a notice over the C a m p u s m a i l e-mail distribution system inviting faculty and staff to last w e e k ' s performance of Z i m b a b w e a n mbira music at the Knickerbocker Theatre. Savaglio used the word exotic once, in the beginning of her message. 4 T o all interested in exotic m u sic: On Thursday September 28 at 8 : 0 0 p . m . After she was alerted by another faculty m e m b e r that the word could be offensive, Savaglio sent out an apology over Campusmail. Some faculty m e m b e r s thought that she didn't need to apologize, and that opinion w a s voiced over C a m p u s m a i l , which provoked responses f r o m people of different opinions. It grew into a full-scale e-mail discussion. A f t e r r e c e i v i n g criticism f r o m some w h o thought this w a s a mis-
use of the Campusmail system, and because pf the amount of e-mails being sent, T o m Renner. director of public relations, w h o is in charge of the system- which is generally used for announcements, decided to m o v e the d e b a t e o n t o D I S C U S . O n e of Savaglio's earliest defenders w a s Mihai Craioveanu, professor of music. Craioveanu felt that Savaglio had no reason to apologize. He cited that the W e b s t e r ' s Dictionary definition of the term is "introduced f r o m another country." Craioveanu said that the word is accepted by a large portion of the world. "1 c a m e to the rescue of a colleague that other people, in the rush of being offended, infringed upon her freedom of speech," Craioveanu said. Craioveanu is from Romania, and he said that he is not offended when Romanian folk music is referred to as exotic. However. Miguel De La Torre, assistant professor of religion, disagreed. He felt that the issue w a s not necessarily about the word "exotic," or what it means. It is about whether a group of people have the

For at least the past seven years, the Student Activity Fee has been only $ 4 5 . 0 0 per semester, which, according to Kelly Morrison, Student Congress comptroller, is very reasonable compared with many other colleges. Last year, this amount proved to be inadequate for student organization needs.
