In a r e c e n t s u r v e y of H o C o l l e g e s t u d e n t s by t h e anchor, students were asked w h e t h e r or not t h e y had jobs, a n d if t h e i r p a y s c a l e s w e r e ade?uate.

Of t h o s e i n t e r v i e w e d t h a t h a d j o b s , 68 p e r c e n t s a i d t h e y worKed on c a m p u s , 28 p e r c e n t w o r k e d off c a m p u s , and 4 percent said they had a j o b b o t h on a n d off c a m p u s The two m a i n reasons s t u d e n t s said t h e y chose to w o r k off c a m p u s a r e b e c a u s e they either had the job before c o m i n g to H o p e , o r t h e y w a n t e d to e a r n m o r e m o n e y t h a n they would on c a m p u s .

On c a m p u s j o b s a p p e a r to be m o r e preferable, however, f o r t h e m a j o r i t y of s t u d e n t s s u r v e y e d . T h i s is o f t e n d u e to the fact that m a n y students have no t r a n s p o r t a t i o n .

S p e a k i n g of t h e b e n e f i t s of onc a m p u s work, one student s a i d " I t ' s so c o n v e n i e n t . Y o u n e v e r h a v e t o g o o u t of y o u r w a y to get to w o r k . " For others, the fact that h o u r s a r e l i m i t e d f o r onc a m p u s jobs, a n d they a r e often more flexible than many off-campus jobs.

Others surveyed mentioned t h a t t h e r e is l e s s p r e s s u r e to perform a task particularly

w e l l , in a n o n - c a m p u s j o b . " A f t e r all," said one student, " i t ' s not like i t ' s a r e a l job o r anything."

The average hours worked per week, among those s u r v e y e d , a r e b e t w e e n six and thirteen, and the average h o u r l y r a t e is still a r o u n d minimum.

Seventy two p e r c e n t of t h o s e s u r v e y e d m a k e l e s s t h a n $4.00 a n h o u r .

In f a c t , t h e m a j o r i t y of j o b s on c a m p u s t h a t c o u l d b e considered "unskilled labor" pav$3.35 and no more.

Some • m e ji( obs, h o w e v e r , do m o r e , a u e to t h e i r h i g h e r d e m a n d o n - c a m p u s . T u t o r s in the Academic Support Center, for e x a m p l e , a r e paid more than a dollar more than the m i n i m u m . Others, such a s t h e h e a d s of s t u d e n t organizations, make may m a k e a s l i t t l e a s % of t h e m i n i m u m w a g e for the h o u r s they put in. Said one organization leader, "that's because they a r e 'volunteer' positions.n In a d d i t i o n , s t u d e n t s w h o n e e d f i n a n c i a l a i d to h e l p them through college m a y be find t h a t they a r e r e ? u e s t e d to p a r t i c i p a t e in a w o r k - s t u d y program, where their paychecks are applied directly to t h e i r tuition charges. The one problem t h i s c a u s e s is t h a t s t u d e n t s

w h o a r e i n v o l v e d in w o r k study program are not a l l o w e d to m a k e o v e r a c e r t a i n a m o u n t of m o n e y , o f t e n $1000.

Not only d o e s this s e e m u n f a i r to t h e students, who could undoubtedly make more m o n e y in l e s s t i m e in a n o f f c a m p u s job, but iU also a p p e a r s t h a t H o p e is g e t t i n g t n e b e t t e r e n d of t h e d e a l , since w o r k - s t u d y is government subsidized, and Hope actually ends up paying fewer wages.

W h e n a s k e d if t n e y t h o u g h t t h e y s h o u l d b e p a i d m o r e , 75 p e r c e n t of t h o s e s u r v e y e d thought they should.

We should be paid m o r e for w h a t w e do, a n d work fewer hours," said one student, "so t h a t w e a r e a b l e to s t u d y m o r e . " Still a n o t h e r s t u d e n t commented that "we didn't c o m e (to H o p e ) to be p u t into a m i n i m u m - w a g e job. We c a m e h e r e to p r e p a r e for something m o r e fulfilling.n M a n y of t h e s t u d e n t s t h e anchor surveyed stated that, with low-payinc jobs, " t h e r e ust isn't e n o u g n for e x t r a s . " i r a n t e d , a lot of resi wil jobs, t h a t t h e i r t i m e is w o r t h m o r e than m i n i m u m wage.

Public Safety cracks down

by J i m Monnett anchor E n t e r t a i n m e n t Editor With r u m o r s flying of a police crackdown against student parties, Hope College's Public Safety a d d r e s s e d the r u m o r s a s "misdirected."

According to t h e Director of Public Safety, R a y Gutknecht, all police involvement at off c a m p u s p a r t i e s so f a r this y e a r has been the sole response of the Holland Police D e p a r t m e n t .

Gutknecht said speaking for Public Safety, " W e ' v e had a couple of incidents of liquor violations on c a m p u s but those w e r e just one or two incidents of students c a r r y i n g alcohol on campus."

Hope College defines 4, onc a m p u s " a s all college-owned housing including dorms, cottages, and a p a r t m e n t s whether or not they a r e literally on the c a m p u s p r o p e r . Public S a f e t y ' s m a i n responsibility a r e these a r e a s .

Any c o m p l a i n t s i n v o l v i n g students in o f f - c a m p u s housing is the responsibility of the Holland Police a c c o r d i n g to a mutally a g r e e d i n f o r m a l jurisdiction.

Gutknecht explained, " W e only get involved ( o f f - c a m p u s ) if called in by t h e Holland Police Department...(though) what o c c u r s o f f - c a m p u s does a f f e c t

the interest in the college."

Sometimes the college administration requests information about some offc a m p u s c o m p l a i n t s concerning students. In this c a s e , Gutknecht said, Public Safety would go off c a m p u s to g a t h e r information.

Public Safety Officer D u a n e Terpstra s a i d , 4,1 o n l y i n v e s t i g a t e c o m p l a i n t s offc a m p u s so t h a t ' s why the c r u i s e r m a y be seen off c a m p u s . " About Public S a f e t y ' s limits to campus property Gutknecht said, " T h i s does not m e a n t h a t if we see a liquor violation taking place in front of us o f f - c a m p u s we won't t a k e a c t i o n . " To put the p a r t i e s into focus, G u t k n e c h t and T e r p s t r a c o n f i r m e d that t h e r e a r e only a r o u n d " s i x to t w e l v e " parties per y e a r that are investigated by Public Safety.

And t h e r e a r e several m o r e liquor violations.

Any l i q u o r v i o l a t i o n s a r e investigated and t u r n e d over to Student Development. The Holland Police m a y be brought in, if w a r r a n t e d by the individual case. " A t H o p e , " G u t k n e c h t said, " t h e r e is no double j e o p a r d y .

People may be prosecuted through t h e c o u r t s a s well a s t h e college."'

Drunk driving is an exception to the g e n e r a l policy of bringing in S t u d e n t D e v e l o p m e n t at Public Safety's discretion.

G u t k n e c h t s a i d , "If t h e y ' r e drunk driving they a u t o m a t i c a l l y spend t i m e in jail a n d will h a v e to go to c o u r t . " Public S a f e t y ' s o f f i c e r s a r e all l i c e n s e d p o l i c e o f f i c e r s for a n y w h e r e in the county by the s t a t e of Michigan. It is only c o m m o n courtesy, though, for t h e o f f i c e r s to l i m i t t h e i r i n v o l v e m e n t to t h e H o p e Community.

As deputized officers. P u b l i c Safety o f f i c e r s a r e licensed to c a r r y w e a p o n s , a s well a s p e r f o r m any other police p r o c e d u r e a s m a n d a t e d by the state, but a s e m p l o y e e s of Hope College the o f f i c e r s m u s t follow an additional set of restrictions.

The m a j o r r e s t r i c t i o n being a g a i n s t the c a r r y i n g of f i r e a r m s .

F o r the Hope c o m m u n i t y ' s knowledge, Gutknecht mentioned a new policy h a n d e d down f r o m city a d m i n i s t r a t i o n to the college a d m i n i s t r a t i o n to Public S a f e t y . He said, " W e h a v e a policy this y e a r , that w e ' r e towing c a r s in t h e fire lane of DeWitt C i r c l e . " The city a d m i n i s t r a t i o n a t t h e u r g i n g s of he city F i r e D e p a r t m e n t , is : o n c e m e d with t h e d a n g e r s of blocking t h a t f i r e l a n e .

More News Part-time jobholders stay in school (CPS) - College s t u d e n t s who hold down p a r t - t i m e Jobs a r e less likely to d r o p out of school, t h e U.S. D e p a r t m e n t of E d u c a t i o n h a s found.

"Work m a y motivate students to s t u d y h a r d e r , a n d t h e s o c i a l i z a t i o n a s s o c i a t e d with w orking m a y b e b e n e f i c i a l for college p e r s i s t e n c e , " study a u t h o r D e n n i s C a r r o l l w r o t e in a s u m m a r y of t h e r e p o r t ' s findings.

T h e new r e p o r t w a s p a r t of a n ongoing d e p a r t m e n t s t u d y called " H i g h School and B e y o n d " - of 30,000 s t u d e n t s who w e r e high school s o p h o m o r e s in 1960, a n d follows t h e m t h r o u g h their e d u c a t i o n a l c a r e e n .

S o m e 93 p e r c e n t of t h e s t u d e n t s who w o r k e d p a r t - t i m e d u r i n g t h e i r f i r s t y e a r in c o l l e g e returned for a second year, c o m p a r e d to 83 p e r c e n t of t h e s t u d e n t s w h o did n o t hold a Job during their f r e s h m a n years.

T h e y w o r k i d l o n g h o u r s , too.

One in 12 s t u d e n t s w o r k e d Jobs r e q u i r i n g m o r e t h a n 41 h o u r s p e r week, while only 25 p e r c e n t of t h e s t u d e n t s w h o w o r k e d h a d Jobs t h a t c o n s u m e d l e s s t h a n 20 h o u r s per week.

First-year students earned an a v e r a g e of $4.44 p e r h o u r d u r i n g t h e s u m m e r a n d $4.72 d u r i n g t h e school y e a r . F o u r t h - y e a r s t u d e n t s e a r n e d a n a v e r a g e of $5.05 d u r i n g t h e s u m m e r a n d $5.57 d u r i n g t h e A c a d e m i c y e a r .

Boston U. imposes new rules BOSTON - Boston University rejected student protests and issued s t r i c t n e w rules Sept. 15 prohibiting s t u d e n t s f r o m h a v i n g o v e r n i g h t g u e s t s of the opposite sex in their d o r m r o o o m s .

"All of life a f t e r 11 p . m . h a s been b a n n e d a t B U , " senior J m a i e S n b o n m a t s u told a crowd of 2,000 s t u d e n t s t h a t h a d c o n v e r g e d to p r o t e s t the visitation rules t h e day b e f o r e they w e r e a p p r o v e d .

B U ' s s t r i c t n e w rules m a y be t h e closest a college has r e t u r n e d to t h e , 4 in l o c o p a r e n t i s " relationship schools m a i n t a i n e d with their s t u d e n t s up until t h e 1960s.

Though t h e r u l e s collapsed under student protests for g r e a t e r a u t o n o m y , new d r i n k i n g l a w s and i n c r e a s i n g n u m b e r s of student lawsuits blaming colleges for s e x u a l a s s a u l t s a n d o t h e r c r i m e s h a v e moved m a n y c a m p u s e s to tighten control o v e r potentially litigious student b e h a v i o r d u r i n g the p a s t few years S t . J o s e p h ' s College in Maine, the S t a t e U n i v e r s i t y of New York at B i n g h a m p t o n a n d N o r t h Carolina State University, among others, also have

r e s t r i c t e d or b a n n e d overnight visists to d o r m s by m e m b e r s of the opposite sex in r e c e n t y e a r s .

Virtually e v e r y c a m p u s in the United S t a t e s , m o r e o v e r , h a s stiffened it's s t u d e n t d r i n k i n g rules since 1986, when the f e d e r a l g o v e r n m e n t t h r e a t e n e d to cut off funding to any s t a t e t h a t still allowed 18 y e a r olds to drink alcohol.

BU officials said they w e r e j u s t trying to help s t u d e n t s study.

T h e n e w r u l e s , s a i d BU spokesman Kevin Carleton, a d d r e s s " c o n c e r n s s t a t e d by students, staff a n d p a r e n t s t h a t r e s i d e n c e s too often h a v e failed t o p r o v i d e t h e k i n d of e n v i r o n m e n t w h e r e an individual c a n quietly study a n d h a v e his or her privacy respected."

S o n b o n m a t s u , on the o t h e r hand, charged, " T h e lOV

Nykerk e x p r e s s e d c o n c e r n that t h e r e was no f e m a l e c o u n t e r p a r t for the Pull. He believed t h a t the women w e r e at a d i s a d v a n t a g e due to the lack of opportunity to c o m p e t e with e a c h other.

The Pull, at t h a t time, h a d been a tradition since 1898, and though m o r a l e girls were involved, it w a s p r i m a r i l y a m a n ' s competition.

E ? u a l i t y called for a w o m e n ' s c o m p e t i t i o n ; p o w d e r puff football was t h e result. A t e a m of f r e s h m e n w o m e n played a g a i n s t a t e a m of s o p h o m o r e w o m e n while m o r a l e g u y s cheered.

At first, this s e e m e d to be a p e r f e c t c o u n t e r p a r t to the Pull, but a f t e r observing the g a m e , Dr. Nykerk decided it w a s " t o o unlady-like a n d too vigorous for the g i r l s . " He did not w a n t a f i e r c e competition. He w a n t e d something t h a t would unify the students.

On March 16, 1936, his idea b e c a m e a reality and a tradition

began. T h e Nykerk Cup contest was first held at Holland High School a n d consisted of t h r e e divisions: song, d r a m a a n d oration. Six j u d g e s w e r e picked by the s t u d e n t council.

At first, some doubted the c o n t e s t ' s a b i l i t y to win popularity with the s t u d e n t s .

However, once it w a s p e r f o r m e d , all doubts dissipated. Not only did the s t u d e n t s love it, but when the competition ended all the p a r t i c i p a n t s s w a r m e d into the center of the floor hugging, laughing, a n d c o n g r a t u l a t i n g each other. Dr. N y k e r k ' s d r e a m had c o m e t r u e .

The f r e s h m e n won t h e first Nykerk Cup. History shows t h a t o u t of 5?. c o n t e s t s , t h e sophomores have won 31 a n d the f r e s h m e n 21. The p u r p o s e of Nykerk is not winning, b u t r a t h e r what Dr. J . B . Nykerk h a d been striving for: A friendly competition in which e v e r y o n e wins.

Nykerk is scheduled this y e a r for October 23rd a t the Holland Civic C e n t e r .

Opinion EDITORIAL Work-study annual limit a problem for college students As evidenced by the survey conducted recently by an anchor staff member, the results of which appear in this issue, students see their wages as something less than equitable for the work they do in their on-campus jobs.

Perhaps this will change for the better, with the bill that was newly passed in the Senate, boosting the minimum wage to around five dollars over a two to three year period. Even so, this change in the minimum wage could have a profound effect on some Hope students.

Those involved in the work-study program, for example, could find that they are unable to acquire the same amount of financial aid as they have had in years past. This is due to the fact that there is a strict limit imposed on the amount of money one may earn for tuition through work-study.

This limit, usually $1000, would be met much sooner if the minimum wage were to increase, causing Hope employers to look for more students to fill their gaps. This, in turn, would cause the amount of money credited to students to increase as well.

Obviously, for Hope College, this situation is less than ideal. Granted, it will be easier for students to find jobs on campus, but what will it do to the college's budget for student wages?

Perhaps the solution is to redesign the work-study program, to adjust for the difference in wages and hours worked. Perhaps, from the college's point of view, more scholarships and grants will have to be awarded, in order to give the same percentage of financial aid to needy students.

Either way, we feel that since the national news media is avoiding the subject, Hope College needs to make some sort of a statement to the campus as a whole, to let us know what the end result is going to be for Hope students. While it is a possibility that the minimum wage increase will have no effect on Hope students, it could, conversely, have a drastic effect on whether or not students can still afford Hope.

You might notice that a dominant t h e m e in this week's issue is the minimum wage for Hope students who worn on campus. 1 guess 1 might as well jump on the bandwagon and throw my opinion in, too.

There's been an ongoing debate for the past couple of ears as to whether or not the e a d e r s of s t u d e n t organizations should be paid.

The feeling is that a volunteer position should be exactly that: volunteer.

Part of the beauty of the system is that every year.

Hope acquires new Student Organiztion leaders.

Although most of them know there's no such thing as a minimum wage for a Hope College Student Organization l e a d e r , t h e y m a y not understand all the time and effort that is involved. They are offered the job, and they accept.

Notice 1 didn't use the word "hire." Student Organization leaders are never actually "hired." They are electea, selected, some even handpicked for the jobs. A few of Ihe Organization leaders, like John Miller of WTHS, are so good at what they do that it appears they were bred for it.

Bui they are never, ever "hired."

So what keeps all these positions filled^ Well, the main thing is obviously not money. Some of the heads of student organizations do earn some money for what they do, but it's clt cleverly called "stipend." ipend." 1I believe that's Latin for "very small wage."

Rather, the important thing to these people is most likely the sense of achievement they get from a job well done. The money they may earn from it helps, but it's m their primary goal.

That's not being sarcastic; that's the truth. 1, for one, get a great feeling every time I see the anchor being read by someone. 1 know others feel the same way about what they do, i n c l u d i n g the E x e c u t i v e C o m m i t t e e of WTHS, the Executive Board of Student Congress, the Editors of the Inklings, and many others.

So what's my point, you're asking? Well, my point is that, despite what may be said about the minimum wage being low, sometimes the feeling you get is worth more than any measley $3.35 an hour. Granted, I wouldn't want to give up the teensyweensy "stipend" I get unless I had to, but given a choice between the money and feeling good about what I do, I d definitely take the feeling of a c c o m p l i s h m e n t .

Everyone working at their onc a m p u s job is d o i n g something that's important to the function of Hope.

In closing, m a y b e the college needs to take a long, hard look at how well some of the students are being paid.

We all can't live on our sense of accomplishment alone.

Money may not be everything, but it pavs the bills.

A l a r g e crowd awaited t h e s h o w of c o n t e m p o r a r y c h r i s t i a n m u s i c with g r e a t enthusiasm.

P a m and Lyn s t a r t e d off the show with a slow n u m b e r and then w e r e joined by Grooters and Beal for some m o r e upbeat numbers.

Then P a m and Lyn did their p a r t of the p r o g r a m . With just an electric piano and their voices,

they gave stirring p e r f o r m a n c e s of songs entitled " M e s s e n g e r " and " F i g h t On".

Grooters and Beal took a small step back from the Christian music to p e r f o r m a song entitled " T h e r e ' s a New Girl in the Window of Third Floor D y k s t r a " Unfortunately, in t h i s l i g h l h e a r t e d song this girl is a l r e a d y taken by a F r a t e r . They then moveci on to the " C h u r c h B u s " , a r a p song based on all the c h u r c h buses that you have e v e r been a f r a i d to ride on.

Theatre department announces productions ( P R ) - The 1988-89 Hope College t h e a t r e d e p a r t m e n t production schedule has been announced.

The opening production will be T h e 1940 s R a d i o Hour, an exciting B r o a d w a y musical by Walton J o n e s which will open F r i d a y , Oct. 21 a n d continue on Oct. 22 and Oct. 26-29.

The second production of the season, Max F r i s c h ' s ironic, dramatic masterpiece. The F i r e b u g s , will be p r e s e n t e d Dec. 1-3 a n d 6-10.

The first production of the second s e m e s t e r will be MsTrial, and o u t r a g e o u s c o m e d y written

Congress approves

appointments

HOPE--At last Thursday's meeting, Student Congress set a one hour maximum time limit on their weekly meetings, appointed s e v e r a l m e m b e r s to c o m m i t t e e s , and appropriated money for this year's Nykerk competition.

Although no longer a member of Student Congress, Senior Kori Levos was appointed to chair the Campus Life committee. Also, Kathy Tan and Charlene Fisher were appointed to the Multi-Cultural Life Committee, Tim VandorVeen was appointed to the Women's Studies Committee and Kris Romence and Matt Knittel w e n appointed to the Intramurals Committee. The Congress then voted unanimously to approve all appointments.

It was reported, however, that a student representative is needed on the EOT Committee of Busin»?ss and Finance, a volunteer is needed to help decide on a speaker for the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, and that someone is still needed lo serve on the judicial board.

As Nykerk 1988 was not budgeted last year. Congress granted, by a vote of 18-6, the appeal for $2,260 for necessary fees.

In new business. Congress member Julie VanEenenaan suggested that there be a shuttle service to Meijers and the Westshore Mall. VanEenenaan will be checking with the Student Activities Committee to see if this idea is viable.

Also, Congress Comptroller B^uce Brown reported complaints about excluding health food from campus vending machines. Congress representative Mary Geil will be writing a letter to the company stocking the machines about this concern.

Finally, freshman Charlene Fisher was selected as the Student Congress secretary.

The next meeting will take place October 6,1988 in the Otte Room at 9 p.m.
