U p to the p r e s e n t time, all g r a d u a t e s h a v e received a b a c h e l o r of a r t s d e g r e e r e g a r d l e s s of their m a j o r .

Mr. DePree s a i d t h a t his e d u c a tion w a s b a s i c a l l y in g o v e r n m e n t , but he a d v i s e d f u t u r e f o r e i g n service e m p l o y e e s to s p e n d m u c h t i m e studying economics and advised the s t u d e n t s interested to " s t u d y a s much l a n g u a g e as you can a s early a s y o u c a n . H o w e v e r , t h e fact t h a t o n l y five to t e n s t u d e n t s a r e e x p e c t e d t o t a k e a d v a n t a g e of t h e d e g r e e w o u l d c e r t a i n l y mitigate against such a drastic change. Furt h e r m o r e , t h e physics d e p a r t m e n t n o w has a p r o g r a m w i t h t h e U n i v e r s i t y of M i c h i g a n d e s i g n e d to g i v e e n g i n e e r i n g t r a i n i n g , a n d it h a s b e e n n o secret t h a t t h e s c i e n c e d e p a r t m e n t s in t h e i r p r e m e d p r o g r a m s o r o t h e r w i s e have long been giving w h a t certainly a m o u n t s to pre-professional t r a i n i n g .

M O N D A Y n i g h t t h e faculty will vote on a music d e p a r t m e n t c u r r i c u l u m p r o p o s a l w h i c h is p e r h a p s t h e m o s t r e v o l u t i o n a r y c u r r i c u l u m c h a n g e i n t h e last 30 y e a r s . T h e p l a n h a s a r o u s e d a c o n s i d e r a b l e d e g r e e of c o n t r o v e r s y w i t h i n t h e f a c u l t y , b u t it s e e m s as if it will b e p a s s e d a n d s e n t t o t h e B o a r d of T r u s t e e s .

T h o s e w h o o p p o s e p a s s a g e of t h e n e w idea are concerned because H o p e would t h e n offer w h a t w o u l d a m o u n t to a solid pre-prof e s s i o n a l d e g r e e , n a m e l y a b a c h e l o r of m u s i c .

T h e v see t h i s as a d e p a r t u r e f r o m t h e t r a d i tional liberal arts stance w h i c h t h e College has a s s u m e d f o r its 100 y e a r s of e x i s t e n c e .

Ironically, the d e g r e e was offered previ o u s l v d u r i n g t h e 1920s, a n d t h e n s c r a p p e d . A t that time H o p e even offered a master's degree in m u s i c . N o w t h e m u s i c d e p a r t m e n t wishes t o o f f e r t h r e e d i f f e r e n t b a c h e l o r of m u s i c deg r e e s a n d o f f e r a n A . B . i n t w o specific a r e a s of m u s i c .

W e b e l i e v e t h a t g i v e n t h e o b j e c t i v e of t h e n e w p r o p o s a l , i.e., t o i n s u r e s t u d e n t s t h e b e s t p o s s i b l e t r a i n i n g in m u s i c if t h e y w i s h t o p u r s u e it as a p r o f e s s i o n , t h e p r o g r a m still r e t a i n s a g o o d a m o u n t of l i b e r a l a r t s t r a i n i n g . I n f a c t , o n e - t h i r d of a s t u d e n t ' s r e q u i r e m e n t s are in t h e l i b e r a l arts, a characteristic w h i c h Dr. M o r r e t t e R i d e r has termed " a l m o s t u n h e a r d o f " in s i m i l a r p r o g r a m s in o t h e r schools.

T h u s , it is n o t as if t h e m u s i c d e p a r t m e n t is s c r a p p i n g t h e i d e a o r t h e p r o g r a m of t h e liberal arts in t h e n e w p r o p o s a l . R a t h e r , t h e i d e a l of t h e l i b e r a l a r t s e d u c a t i o n a n d t h e b e s t p o s s i b l e m u s i c t r a i n i n g is i n h e r e n t i n it.

I seriously wonder how a n y o n e c a n see the tail-end a n d first half of a m o v i e , w a l k o u t , a n d c o n s i d er himself c o m p e t e n t to j u d g e t h e m e r i t s of it.

In the first p l a c e , the m o v i e w a s q u i t e i n v o l v e d . In c a s e Dr. M e g o w m i s s e d the b a s i c p l o t , b e c a u s e of o r d e r in w h i c h h e s a w the segm e n t s , it is a b o u t t w o c o u p l e s w h o get t o o i n t o x i c a t e d o n e n i g h t . D u r i n g this p e r i o d of d r u n k e n n e s s , we see t h a t b e h i n d t h e i r l o f t y exteri o r s t h e r e is q u i t e a n o t h e r s t o r y .

D U E to their i n t o x i c a t i o n , t h e i r

u s u a l p o w e r s of s o c i a l i z a t i o n a r e b r o k e n d o w n , a n d we see t h e m for w h a t t h e y r e a l l y a r e . W h a t we see is n o t p r e t t y , but then if we l o o k e d at o u r s e l v e s a n d o u r h i s t o r i e s , we m i g h t n o t find s u c h p r e t t y s i g h t s either.

T h e m o v i e w a s excellently d o n e .

T h e a c t i n g of b o t h Liz T a y l o r a n d Mr. B u r t o n w a s of the h i g h e s t c a l i b e r . Dr. M e g o w ' s letter of c o n d e m n a t i o n did n e t m e n t i o n this but w a s q u i t e c o n t e n t to s a y , without e v e n h a v i n g seen the m o v i e t h r o u g h , " T h e film s t i n k s . " INSTEAD HE wrote a quite l e n g t h y letter o n s e m a n t i c s a n d G e r m a n p o e t r y . N o t t o o m u c h is r e a l l y s a i d a b o u t the m o v i e itself. An inference m i g h t be m a d e f r o m this deed t h a t m a y b e the d e s i r e w a s m o r e to be h e a r d t h a n to s a y s o m e t h i n g c r e a t i v e .

T h e r e w a s a reference to the l a n g u a g e of the m o v i e . T o be s u r e it w a s n o t the t y p e f o u n d in o u r romantized a n d glorified screen p r o d u c t i o n s . But then s o m e t i m e s people d o say " d a m n " instead of " d a r n " a n d " h e l l " i n s t e a d of "heck."

We w e r e not t h e r e to " h e l p t h o s e p o o r p e o p l e . " We were t h e r e to l e a r n f r o m them a n d w o r k with t h e m to help t h e m s e l v e s .

H a r d l y a f a n of C l e v e l a n d ' s city g o v e r n m e n t , 1 dispelled a fleeting i m a g e of M a y o r R a l p h L o c h e r admitting blame and remedying the p l i g h t of H o u g h . I n s t e a d , Mayor Locher blamed agitators, c o n s p i r a t o r s , a n d the " s h a m e f u l b e h a v i o r of l a w l e s s m e n . " Indeed, s e v e r a l w e e k s l a t e r M a y o r L o c h e r testified at the Senate s u b c o m m i t t e e h e a r i n g s o n urb a n p r o b l e m s , t h a t he h a d f o r m e d a " c o m m i t t e e " to s t u d y the p r o b l e m s of H o u g h a y e a r b e f o r e .

S e n a t o r A b r a h a m Ribicoff, in a n a c c u s i n g voice, replied, " D o n ' t y o u t h i n k p e o p l e get tired of t a l k ? ' ' M a y o r L o c h e r ' s " c o l d f e e f ab o u t s t e p p i n g into the s p r a w l i n g Kast side g h e t t o a n d a c t i n g res p o n s i b l y , t r i g g e r e d in m y m i n d a n i g h t m a r i s h i m a g e of t h o u s a n d s of L o c h e r s , w h o s e w o r l d - v i e w s s l a n t t o w a r d s a h a p p y s o r t of "affluent society," where poverty is u n n o t i c e d .

" " W h y c a n ' t t h e y pull t h e m s e l v e s u p ? L o o k at me. I did it."

1 c n a r g e these p e o p l e with a n " e g o c e n t r i c f a l l a c y , " which fails to a c c o u n t f o r s o c i o l o g i c a l a n d p s y c h o l o g i c a l d a t a . .lust a s the j u r y r e p o r t w a s inflicting a middle-class m o r a l v i e w p o i n t u p o n a g h e t t o w h i c h h a d a different s t r u c t u r e of life, s o o u r m i d d l e c l a s s s o c i e t y inflicts its p r e j u d i c e d , e g o c e n t r i c j u d g m e n t s o n the p r o b l e m s of A m e r i c a which instead d e m a n d a listening ear.

In " C o n f r o n t a t i o n , " a s e m i n a r held in C l e v e l a n d recently when s u b u r b a n a n d inner-city p e o p l e listened to e a c h o t h e r , a s u b u r b a n woman commented: " W e c a m e t h i n k i n g it w o u l d be s o e a s y to j u m p the b a r r i e r a n d c o m m u n i c a t e , but a g e - o l d m i s c o n c e p t i o n s a n d hostilities kept c r o p ping u p . " In the inner-city we s a w fast .hat w h a t the city a n d c h u r c h were d o i n g in a s e l f - r i g h t e o u s p a t e r n a l i s m w a s e m p t y of m e a n i n g

Charity Not Wanted In " C o n f r o n t a t i o n " the s u b u r banite said: " W e were b l u n t l y told b y them ( i n n e r - c i t y p e o p l e ) t h a t t h e y were sick ol haVidouts, sick ot p a t e r n a listic p r o g r a m s a n d a t t i t u d e s t h a t h a d e s t a b l i s h e d s y s t e m s to c a r e for them that actually perpetuated their p o v e r t y a n d d e p e n d e n c y . As 43 m o r e Southern hospitals w e r e t h e r e a t e n e d with with-holding of f u n d s b e c a u s e they h a d not i n t e g r a t e d " s u f f i c i e n t l y , " a Congressional investigation w a s being p l a n n e d into w h e t h e r i n t e g r a t i o n w a s being pushed too f a r too f a s t by this m e t h o d .

H a r r i s and Gallup polls indicated a white b a c k l a s h

of m a j o r proportions is developing. This b a c k l a s h w a s typified with the nominations of L e s t e r Maddox of Georgia and Mahoney of M a r y l a n d f o r governor on the D e m o c r a t i c ticket over racially modera t e opponents.

Millionaire-Mayor Ivan Allen, J r . , of Atlanta, condemned the nomination of Maddox as " a combination of ignorant, p r e j u d i c e , and r e a c t i o n a r y elem e n t s " t h a t nominated a m a n unfit to h a n d l e the p r o b l e m s of governor. A D e m o c r a t i c C o n g r e s s m a n of two t e r m s r e f u s e d a pledge to support t h e entire D e m o c r a t i c ticket in Georgia and so r e f u s e d to seek re-election. He is disgusted with the D e m o c r a t s in his s t a t e that would n o m i n a t e a m a n like Maddox.

Florida Killer h u r r i c a n e Inez is now e a s t of Florida a f t e r killing 1,300.

Bay of Bengal Thirty-nine w e r e left d e a d h e r e a f t e r a hurricane.

Illinois A third s c a n d a l is being u n e a r t h e d f r o m the s t a t e capital in Springfield to the M a y o r ' s office in Chicago. This one, as in the other two, is about payoffs and the political spoils s y s t e m in Chicago and Cook county. At least $1 million is involved.

Alumnus Serves TV Internship Peter P a u l s e n , a f o r m e r H o p e College s t u d e n t a n d p r e s e n t l y a s t u d e n t at the N e w B r u n s w i c k T h e o l o g i c a l S e m i n a r y , h a s recently completed a n intensive s t u d y of c o m m e r c i a l television b r o a d c a s t i n g p r o c e d u r e s . T h e 12 week i n t e r n s h i p p r o g r a m w a s sponsored by the Reformed C h u r c h of A m e r i c a a n d W Z Z M TV in G r a n d R a p i d s .

Mr. P a u l s e n , w h o p l a n s to become a n o r d a i n e d minister after c o m p l e t i o n of his s e m i n a r y s t u d ies in 1 9 6 7 , will s e r v e in the field of r e l i g i o u s broadcasting.

Miss T i m m e r a n d t h r e e o t h e r girls lived in a s m a l l h o u s e c o n n e c t e d with the m i s s i o n . Everyone worked and sang together."
