F o r m a n y people, the ' 9 8 Pull has c o m e to an e n d . F o r Paul M c K e e ( ' 9 8 ) , S a r a h Sexton ( 4 99), and faculty advisor Dr. Mark Northuis, the excitement of pull is about to begin. Later this w e e k , M c K e e and Sexton will start to a n a l y z e the e x p e r i m e n t a l data they b e e n collected during the past three w e e k s of Pull. " O n Saturday, we put heart m o n i t o r s on 12 of the pullers, six on e a c h t e a m , " said M c K e e . " W e took the heart rates o f t h o s e same kids during 3 of the prior practices as well. A f t e r we graph the data on the c o m puter, w e ' l l be able to look at and c o m p a r e the heart rates of the practices with the heart rates of the Pull
p r e p a r i n g the pullers for the actual stress of the Pull. "Last year, we only m o n i t o r e d heart rales during the pull and d u r i n g the last Saturday practice b e f o r e it," M c K e e said. " T h a t g a v e us only one c o m p a r i s o n . Our results s h o w e d that d u r i n g the practice, the rates never w e n t over 120 or 140, while during the pull, the rates never w e n t u n d e r 180," M c K e e said. T h e s e s e e m i n g l y low rates d u r i n g the practice do not necessarily m e a n that the pullers w e r e not physically r e a d y for the actual Pull. Rather, the low rales d u r i n g the practice c o u l d simply a c c o u n t for the fact that m a n y of the pullers w e r e not e x p e r i e n c i n g the a d r e n a l i n e r u s h e s and e x c i t e m e n t that they felt during the pull itself, as indicated by the h i g h e r heart rates. more RESEARCH on IO
