This weekend's going to be a busy one at Hope. With the theme of ' T h a n k s for the Memories," in honor of President and Mrs. Van Wylen's last year with us, there will be plenty to do in the way of • traditional and new events. At 8 p.m. on Friday, the Great Performance Series presents " J a m e s Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band" at Dimnent Memorial Chapel. Following the concert, the J a m e s Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band will play at an allcampus dance in the Maas Student and Conference Center. This will be the grand opening of the Maas Center for the students. Dress for the dance is semiformal, and admission is free. If the Great Performance Series isn't to your liking, there will be other entertainment on the campus such as the films "The Great Gatsby"and "The Sting" which will be presented in Winants Auditorium. The ninth annual Run-BikeSwim gets off to an early start Saturday morning at 7:30. If you're looking for a way for your group to get noticed on cam-

In a letter r e g a r d i n g a b o r t i o n in i t s sent to Max Boersma, Executive synodical decisions and the ongoSecretary of Hope's Board of ing practice of Hope College Trustees, Right to Life "feels directing its pregnant women to that in order to make a sound a specific abortion clinic in decision regarding abortion, a Grand Rapids. It should be remembered that Hope's Health Clinic is against abortion. With that in mind, we see that Van Wylen wrote to Right to Life to say, "that if the student is determined to have an abortion, she (Mrs. Blanksma) counsels the student as to where the student will receive the most humane and sensitive treatment." Because the Board of Trustees affirms the position Blanksma has taken, they commend her and the Clinic staff for showing care and concern for their students. After looking at the differences that Right to Life and the Health Clinic a r e having, a different questions arises: What is the source of the problem between the two sides? The source appears to be the fact that there actually are a number of pregnancies on campus, and abortion is being chosen in some cases by students. Unfortunate, agree both sides, but preventative measures for unwanted pregnancies would probably be a better course of action for both sides than arguing the positions of the College.

pus, you might try entering a f l o a t or m a r c h i n g in t h e Homecoming parade at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Contact Susan Langejans or Janilyn Brower to get your group entered. There will be cash prizes for the best entry representing either your group or the theme "Thanks for the Memories." President and Mrs. Van Wylen will be the grand marshalls of the parade. Line-up and judging time is 12:30 in Van Raalte Commons. The parade will leave from there and proceed to College Avenue, to 10th Street, to Columbia Avenue, to 13th Street, then on to the stadium. At 1:45, the pre-game show for the Hope-Alma football game gets under way at Holland Municiple Stadium. The half time show will feature a tribute to President and Mrs. VanWylen, and music will be provided by the Comstock High Marching Band. Also at halftime, the academic trophy will be given to the fraternity and sorority with the highest grade point average. And of course, we must not forget the announcement of the Homecoming king and queen

during the halftime show as well. This year's court consists of Lyn Curley, J a n i c e Day, Susan Kunkle, Jill Mannor, Jennifer Phelps, and Theresa Van Isendal as the queen candidates, and Dwight Beal, Jonathon Beyer, David Meconi, Kraig Peterson, Kevin Shoemaker, and Scott Voet as the candidates for king. Following the game, there will be an Open House at the President's Home until 7 p.m., and Student Organizations will also hold open houses in the DeWitt Center. From 4:30 to 6:30 there will be a special buffet dinner in Phelps Dining Room. The weekend winds up with morning worship at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Dimnent Memorial Chapel, with music provided by the Hope College Chapel Choir and the Alumni Choir under the d i r e c t i o n of P r o f . R o g e r Rietberg. At 4 p.m. there will be an Alumni Symphonette Concert directed by Dr. Morrette Rider at Dimnent Memorial Chapel. All in all there should be plenty to do for the young and old alike this weekend.
