Hope College s Board of Trustees announced ai a press conference last week lhal Hope is initialing a capital campaign with a goal of $85 million dollars, the largest f u n d raising effort in college history. The campaign, called "Legacies: A Vision of H o p e . " was a p p r o v e d on Thursday as part of the Board's annual fall meeting. " W e ' r e very excited about it. I think w e ' r e challenging our c o n stituency." said P e t e r H u i z e n g a , campaign c o c h a i r and trustee. "1 think w e can reach that goal; it's achievable." According to Jim Bultman, president of Hope College, the money will be used f o r three m a j o r initiates: expansion and renovation of the Peale Science Center, the construction of the Martha Miller Center for Dance. Communications and Modern and Classical Languages, and to increase the e n d o w m e n t . In addition to these major initiatives. the money will be used for other things, such as restoring Lubbers Hall, m o d e r n i z i n g the D o w Center, the work that has already been started on G r a v e s Hall. Dimnent Chapel, and the new organ room of Nykerk Hall. "There is something in this campaign for virtually every corner of campus." Bultman said. However, according to Bultman, other b u i l d i n g s that the c a m p u s needs will have to wait until a later campaign. This includes a new

Susan Atefat Peckham. professor of English and published poet, was announced winner of the National Poetry Series this fall for her manuscript "That Kind of Sleep". Atefat P e c k h a m ' s collection of poems was selected for Coffee H o u s e Press by poet Victor H e m a d e z Cruz from a pool of over 1500 entries f r o m established and emerging contemporary American poets. " T h a t Kind of Sleep' is a pendulum between cultures and I might add e p o c h s . " Cruz said. On Tuesday, both the m e n ' s and w o m e n ' s H o p e College soccer teams pulled off 1-0 victories over rival Calvin College. Not only were the scores identical, but both winning goals were scored in the 57th minute of play. Scoring the Flying D u t c h m e n ' s goal was Matt Margaron ('03), his first goal of the year. It came after Chris Sterling ( ' 0 4 ) took a shot that rebounded into a group of players, and Margaron just happened to be there and put it o v e r the Knight goalie's head into the net. "I was just in the right place at the right time," said Margaron. "It was the most exciting thing that has ever happened to m e in my life." H o p e g o a l k e e p e r M a r c u s Voss ( ' 0 3 ) turned in an impressive perf o r m a n c e with 14 saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season. ' T h i s is a big win for us as a team. W e ' v e persevered through some hard l o s s e s , " said Voss. " W e ' v e fought back and now have a chance of winning the M I A A . " T h i s was the fourth consecutive victory for the Flying Dutchmen, a n d their record stands at 4 - 2 in M I A A play, and 7-6 overall.
