'Church History' Reveals: Peters Teaching Again " D r . " R o b e r t P e t e r s isn't d e a d ; h e ' s a l i v e a n d t e a c h i n g at N o r t h w e s t e r n P o l y t e c h n i c Institute in London, England.

T h i s latest e p i s o d e in the d i v e r sified life of t h e f o r m e r H o p e Coll e g e f a c u l t y m e m b e r c a m e to light t h i s week w h e n t h e S e p t e m b e r i s s u e of p r e s t i g i o u s " C h u r c h H i s t o r y " m a g a z i n e reached the Hope campus. This periodical, described a s " t h e l e a d i n g j o u r n a l in c h u r c h h i s t o r y " b y Dr. D a v i d C l a r k , b o a s t e d a n article titled " E r a s m u s a n d the F a t h e r s : Their Practical V a l u e " b y n o n e o t h e r t h a n Robert Peters.

T h e b y l i n e on the article carried a description of Peters a s a "lecturer in h i s t o r y " at N o r t h w e s tern Polytechnic. T h e p u b l i c a t i o n of the A m e r i c a n Society of Church H i s t o r y m a d e n o m e n t i o n of a n y d e g r e e s p o s s e s s e d b y the Reform a t i o n historian, w h o w a s arrested, e x p o s e d a s a fraud a n d

d e p o r t e d f r o m the United States last semester.

W h e n a n O x f o r d f r i e n d of Dr. W a r r e n V a n d e r Hill w a s q u e s tioned a b o u t N o r t h w e s t e r n Polytechnic, he d e s c r i b e d it a s " k i n d of like y o u r F e r r i s S t a t e C o l l e g e . " Dr. V a n d e r Hill n o t e d , h o w e v e r , t h a t t h e fact t h a t his w o r k w a s selected f o r " C h u r c h H i s t o r y " p r o v e d t h e q u a l i t y of his s c h o l a r ship. Rhine Talk ^Explores' ESP Yesterday morning a crowded a l l - c o l l e g e a s s e m b l y in D i m n e n t Memorial Chapel was urged by Dr. J. B. R h i n e t o t a k e u p t h e c h a l l e n g e of e x p l o r a t i o n a n d d e l v e i n t o t h e s p h e r e of t h e u n k n o w n .

Dr. R h i n e s p o k e of t h e c h a l l e n g e i m p l i c i t in s u c h i n c i d e n t s , which defy credibility. " W h e n y o u find s o m e o n e s a y i n g s o m e t h i n g is i m p o s s i b l e , y o u k n o w y o u h a v e something worth e x p l o r i n g , " he said.

Dr. R h i n e , v e t e r a n r e s e a r c h e r in t h e field of e x t r a - s e n s o r y p e r c e p t i o n , m i x e d a d i s c u s s i o n of h i s p a r a p s y c h o l o g i c a l field with a n a p p e a l t o h i s a u d i e n c e to m o v e b e y o n d s i m p l e belief a n d b e c o m e an explorer.

" T h e r e is s o m e t h i n g m o r e in t h e u n i v e r s e . " T h e p r o l e s s o r went o n t o exp l a i n that his r e s e a r c h indicated t h a t t h i s " s o m e t h i n g m o r e " is f o u n d in all of us. " T h e r e is not h i n g a b o u t it t h a t c o n f l i c t s with p s y c h o l o g y a s we k n o w i t , " h e said. " I t is n o n - p h y s i c a l , b u t o t h e r w i s e it is p a r t of t h e n o r m a l m a k e u p of t h e h u m a n b e i n g . " Dr. R h i n e s a i d t h a t E S P is " g i v ing m a n s o m e t h i n g a b o v e the m a t t e r of life, a b o v e t h e p h y s i c a l s y s t e m . " It i n d i c a t e s , h e s a i d , t h a t m a n m a y h a v e " a little m a s t e r y o v e r his p h y s i c a l u n i v e r s e . "

DR. J. B. R H I N E T h e l e c t u r e r n o t e d t h a t the ext r a - s e n s o r y p h e n o m e n a might be a n e x p r e s s i o n of a " p o w e r o v e r o u r s e l v e s " which m a y free us f r o m " h a v i n g to live in f e a r of t h e physical dangers we have created." " I t ' s the m o s t i n c r e d i b l e t h i n g I ' v e e n c o u n t e r e d in t h e u n i v e r s e , " the f o r m e r plant physiologist said.

Dr. R h i n e e n u m e r a t e d v a r i o u s incidents b r o u g h t to his attention over the years which illustrated t h e n a t u r e of t h e e x t r a - s e n s o r y experience.

He told about a y o u n g w o m a n w h o d r e a m e d that her fiance's hair h a d turned white, b e c a m e s o u p s e t t h a t s h e w r o t e h i m in E u r o p e , where he w a s s e r v i n g in t h e a r m y .

Senate Motion Suggests Compulsory Chapel Study

By Jan Dzurina and George Arwady T h e Student Senate h a s called f o r a n e w l o o k at t h e p r o b l e m of c o m p u l s o r y c h a p e l a n d h a s rec o m m e n d e d that chapel exempt i o n s b e g r a n t e d to n o n - C h r i s t i a n students a n d those Christians who h a v e a c o n s c i e n t i o u s o b j e c t i o n to Deing f o r c e d to w o r s h i p .

T h e a c t i o n c a m e in a f o u r - p a r t resolution introduced by Senator Z a i d e P i x l e y a n d p a s s e d 3 5 - 3 at t h e S e n a t e ' s M o n d a y n i g h t meeting. T h e text of t h e r e s o l u t i o n c a n b e f o u n d o n t h e b o t t o m of this page.

T H E F I R S T P A R T of the r a t i fied r e s o l u t i o n i n s t r u c t s the Senate to d r a w u p a r e p o r t o n t h e p u r p o s e s a n d s t r u c t u r e of rcy l i g i o u s life of t h e c a m p u s a n d s u b mit it to the R e l i g i o u s Life C o m mittee. T h e p r o p o s a l s t a t e d t h a t t h e r e p o r t w o u l d b e d r a w n u p with the hope that "constructive c h a n g e s will b e m a d e . " T h e C o m m i t t e e w h i c h will d r a w u p t h e r e p o r t is to w o r k in c o n j u n c t i o n with C h a p l a i n William Hillegonds and the College Church.

T H E S E C O N D P L A N K of the resolution calls for an all-campus s t u d e n t r e f e r e n d u m o n the s u b j e c t of compulsory chapel, which w o u l d b e c o n d u c t e d b y the Student Senate.

This would be aimed, according to S e n a t e P r e s i d e n t C r a i g Holl e m a n , to g i v e a c l e a r e x p r e s s i o n of c a m p u s feeling a b o u t r e q u i r e d c h a p e l . " I t ' s m o r e of a poll t h a n a r e f e r e n d u m , " he s a i d . It will c o v e r the e n t i r e s t u d e n t b o d y .

H o l l e m a n e m p h a s i z e d the need for p u b l i c i t y a n d d i s c u s s i o n o n the q u e s t i o n , a n d n o t e d t h a t senators should play a leading role in t h e d i s c u s s i o n .

T H E T H I R D P A R T of t h e r e s o lution concerns e x e m p t i o n s f r o m c h a p e l . As t h e s i t u a t i o n p r e s e n t l y stands, exemptions are granted b y t h e C h a p e l B o a r d o n l y o n the b a s i s of s t u d e n t t e a c h i n g , w o r k , or f a m i l y c o n f l i c t s .

T h e resolution requests that the R L C , t h e f a c u l t y a n d the A d m i n -

istration immediately establish a n e w p o l i c y w h i c h will g r a n t a d d i tional exemptions " o n g r o u n d s of r e l i g i o n d i f f e r i n g f r o m C h r i s t i a n i t y " a n d " o n g r o u n d s of c o n science, w h e r e t h e i n d i v i d u a l f i n d s t h a t h e m a y n o t p a r t a k e in c o m pulsory worship." " W i t h i n e v e r y i n s t i t u t i o n t h e rel i g i o u s r i g h t s of t h e m i n o r i t y m u s t be respected a n d h o n o r e d r e g a r d l e s s of m a j o r i t y v i e w s , " the p r o p o s a l noted.

MISS P I X L E V S p r o p o s a l cautions that this i m m e d i a t e step s h o u l d not b e c o n s t r u e d a s a n " a b o l i t i o n of c o m p u l s o r y c h a p e l , b u t r a t h e r a s a l o n g o v e r d u e reform."

T h e o v e r - a l l q u e s t i o n of a b o l i t i o n of the r e q u i r e m e n t o r its rep l a c e m e n t with a non-worship substitute would p r e s u m a b l y be t h e c o n c e r n of the S e n a t e c o m mittee, w h i c h w o u l d t a k e into acc o u n t s t u d e n t o p i n i o n reflected in the referendum.

T h e f o u r t h a r e a with w h i c h the r e s o l u t i o n c o n c e r n s itself is t h e p u r p o s e , c o m p o s i t i o n a n d proced u r e s of the C h a p e l B o a r d . U n d e r fhe ratified m o t i o n , the R L C s h o u l d d e f i n e a n d c l a r i f y the p o s i t i o n of the C h a p e l B o a r d .

T H I S L A S T P A R T of t h e p r o p o s a l g r e w o u t of t h e shift of Chapel Board membership from a s t u d e n t to a f a c u l t y m a j o r i t y a n d a g e n e r a l l a c k of u n d e r s t a n d i n g c o n c e r n i n g the r o l e of the Committee.

Senate President Holleman p r a i s e d the r e s o l u t i o n w h i c h t h e student g o v e r n i n g b o d y passed by a l a n d s l i d e m a j o r i t y . " T h e resol u t i o n is l o n g o v e r d u e , " h e s a i d . " I t is a n excellent s t e p t o w a r d greater c a m p u s h a r m o n y and needs serious consideration."

H o l l e m a n n o t e d t h a t t h e resol u t i o n e x p l a i n e d that t h e q u e s t i o n of c o m p u l s o r y c h a p e l s h o u l d b e t h e c o n c e r n of the S e n a t e t h i s y e a r b e c a u s e of its r e s p o n s i b i l i t y f o r " t h e t o t a l c a m p u s life i n c l u d i n g the r e l i g i o u s a s p e c t " a n d bt^ c a u s e of S e n a t e feeling t h a t " o n e a r e a of the r e l i g i o u s life is n o t

Alter Chapel Board Make-Up The Chapel Board has underg o n e a c h a n g e in c o m p o s i t i o n this y e a r , b e c o m i n g a c o m m i t t e e with a m a j o r i t y of f a c u l t y i n s t e a d of s t u d e n t s .

Responsible for a d m i n i s t e r i n g requests for chapel exemption a n d k e e p i n g t r a c k of the n u m b e r of chapel cuts taken by individual s t u d e n t s , t h e C h a p e l B o a r d is n o w m a d e u p of t h r e e f a c u l t y m e m b e r s a n d o n e s t u d e n t , with a faculty m e m b e r as c h a i r m a n .

LAST YEAR the committee consisted of f o u r s t u d e n t s a n d t w o faculty members, and was chaired b y a m e m b e r of t h e s t u d e n t b o d y .

W h y t h e c o m p o s i t i o n of t h e B o a r d w a s c h a n g e d , a n d exactly who authorized the c h a n g e were u n a n s w e r e d q u e s t i o n s when the a n c h o r went to p r e s s o n Wednesday.

The Student Senate p a s s e d a resolution M o n d a y which asked t h e R e l i g i o u s Life C o m m i t t e e to " d e f i n e a n d c l a r i f y t h e p o s i t i o n of t h e C h a p e l B o a r d r e g a r d i n g its purpose, composition a n d proc e d u r e . D A V I D M A R K E R t h e o n l y c a r r y o v e r on the C h a p e l B o a r d f r o m last y e a r , noted that the p a p e r w o r k i n v o l v e d with t h e t a b u l a t i o n of c h a p e l c u t s l a s t y e a r was a " t r e m e n d o u s b u r d e n " on the students on the committee.

He said that students resigned last year " b e c a u s e t h e y j u s t c o u l d n't h a n d l e t h e w o r k . " On t h a t b a s i s , he s a i d , he h a d r e c o m m e n d e d t h a t c h a n g e s be m a d e in t h e C h a p e l B o a r d s o t h a t if the r e q u i r e m e n t w a s to c o n t i n u e , a n a c c u r a t e r e c o r d of a t t e n d a n c e c o u l d b e efficiently m a i n t a i n e d .

Dr. M a r k e r , h o w e v e r , d i d not k n o w w h o h a d c h a n g e d the makeu p of t h e c o m m i t t e e o r w h y it h a d b e e n m a d e , e s p e c i a l l y in light of the u t i l i z a t i o n of t h e I B M c o m p u t e r this y e a r to e l i m i n a t e the burdensome paperwork.

H o l l e m a n s a i d t h a t if t h e m a k e u p w a s to b e c h a n g e d , it s h o u l d

h a v e been d o n e u n d e r the auspices of t h e S t a t u s C o m m i t t e e .

ALL T H E F A C U L T Y memb e r s i n v o l v e d with t h e C h a p e l B o a r d e m p h a s i z e d t h a t the c o m mittee w a s n o t a p o l i c y - m a k i n g , but a n a d m i n i s t r a t i v e committee.

Dr. B r u i n s n o t e d t h a t d e c i s i o n s on exemptions had been m a d e on the b a s i s of definite c r i t e r i a . Fifty-eight e x e m p t i o n s w e r e m a d e f o r student teachers and those h a v i n g f a m i l y o r w o r k o b l i g a t i o n s which c o n f l i c t e d with c h a p e l .

T H I R T E E N S T U D E N T S sub mitted r e q u e s t s for e x e m p t i o n s f o r r e a s o n s of c o n s c i e n t i o u s o b j e c t i o n to t h e c o m p u l s o r y f o r m of w o r s h i p . T h e C h a p e l B o a r d rejected all of these. Dr. B r u i n s s t r e s s e d , h o w e v e r , t h a t the p o l i c y d e c i s i o n on t h e s e r e q u e s t s w a s n o t m a d e b y the C h a p e l B o a r d , b u t b y the Administration.

T h e B o a r d c h a i r m a n said that he h a d r e c e i v e d a n o r a l d i r e c t i v e f r o m Dean for A c a d e m i c Affairs William V a n d e r Lugt that such e x e m p t i o n s s h o u l d b e rejected because conscience was " n o t a valid r e a s o n " for exemption. T h e Chapel B o a r d t h u s r e j e c t e d t h e 13 requests automatically.

It h a s a r i g h t to i n s t r u c t a n y s t u d e n t in w h a t it believes, b u t it h a s n o r i g h t to f o r c e h i m t o p a r t i c i p a t e in t h o s e beliefs. W h e r e a s t u d e n t ' s beliefs a r e cont r a d i c t e d a n d w h e r e c o n s c i e n c e is v i o l a t e d , compulsion has no place whatsoever.

T h e four-part resolution concerning chapel, adopted M o n d a y by 35-3 vote of t h e S e n a t e , o f f e r s t h e p o t e n t i a l of b e i n g the m o s t worthwhile and significant single m o t i o n p a s s e d b y the H o p e s t u d e n t g o v e r n m e n t in the l a s t s e v e r a l y e a r s . W e s u p p o r t it w h o l e h e a r t e d l y .

T h e f i n a l p o i n t of the r a t i f i e d r e s o l u t i o n is a r e q u e s t f o r a d e f i n i t i o n a n d clarific a t i o n of the p u r p o s e , c o m p o s i t i o n a n d p r o c e d u r e of the C h a p e l B o a r d .

B y Richard B o e s e R a y B r a d b u r y is chiefly k n o w n a s a m a s t e r of science fiction a n d f a n t a s y , a n d c o n s e q u e n t l y he is usually dismissed by "serious" r e a d e r s a s a writer of r a t h e r juvenile a n d irrelevant literature.

Resisting t h e t e m p t a t i o n to l a u n c h i n t o a f e r v e n t a n d l e n g t h y defense of science fiction, 1 will m e r e l y s a y that t h e s e r e a d e r s a r e s a d l y mistaken.

IT IS T R U E that s o m e faculty a n d s t u d e n t s h a v e been involved in the p l a n n i n g of interior s p a c e a n d facilities in i n d i v i d u a l buildings. This consultation process h a s r e s u l t e d in t h e r a d i c a l r e d r a w i n g of the a r c h i t e c t ' s p l a n s .

It w o u l d a p p e a r sensible, then, to solicit r e a c t i o n s to the wider a n d m o r e i m p o r t a n t m a t t e r of placing buildings on the c a m p u s , s o that e x p e n s i v e c h a n g e s m i g h t b e m a d e a s e a r l y as p o s s i b l e in the p l a n n i n g .

A specific p o i n t of m y r e m a r k s is this: I w o u l d like to h a v e s o m e w a y of d i s c o v e r i n g s t u d e n t s ' rea c t i o n to a M a s t e r P l a n that surr o u n d s the l i b r a r y with b u i l d i n g s f o r science d e p a r t m e n t s , w h o s e m a j o r s use the l i b r a r y f a r less than humanities m a j o r s , and that relegate - ) the h u m a n i t i e s d e p a r t m e n t s to a h a n d - m e - d o w n building f a r r e m o v e d f r o m the l i b r a r y .

I w o u l d like to k n o w if h u m a n i ties m a j o r s f i n d it to b e of b a s i c i m p o r t a n c e to h a v e the l i b r a r y be the real b a s e of o p e r a t i o n for their a c a d e m i c w o r k . It m a y b e t h a t 1 a m b u r d e n e d with a rom a n t i c ideal w h e n 1 e n v i s i o n a s m a l l liberal a r t s college a s m a k ing it p o s s i b l e f o r s t u d e n t s to r e a d i l y c o n s u l t f a c u l t y as r e s e a r c h is c a r r i e d out in the l i b r a r y .

I like the i n c r e a s e d s t u d e n t power that 1 h a v e experienced so far this y e a r at H o p e College. As a m e m b e r of the E d u c a t i o n a l Policies C o m m i t t e e I w e l c o m e d the Student S e n a t e ' s r e q u e s t that student m e m b e r s b e a d m i t t e d to t h a t committee and 1 have observed the t h r e e student m e m b e r s m a k e e x t r e m e l y helpful a n d t r e n c h a n t c o n t r i b u t i o n s . As a m e m b e r of the C u l t u r a l A f f a i r s C o m m i t t e e I h a v e realized the i n v a l u a b l e r o l e of s t u d e n t m e m b e r s in interpreting the interests of o t h e r s t u d e n t s .

T H E S E R E M A R K S a r e not intended as p a t r o n i z i n g a d m i s s i o n that e v e n s t u d e n t s c a n s o m e t i m e s h a v e h e l p f u l ideas. W h a t is m a i n ly o n m y m i n d is the r e a l i z a t i o n that the p r e s e n c e of s t u d e n t s o n c o m m i t t e e s helps m e to a v o i d t h e f a c u l t y s y n d r o m e of m a k i n g decis i o n s m a i n l y o n the b a s i s of w h a t I think s t u d e n t s s h o u l d w a n t .

1 w o u l d like to see H o p e College t a k e m o r e d a r i n g s t e p s tow a r d s the inclusion of s t u d e n t s in important decision-making processes.

Student o p i n i o n c o u l d m a k e its m o s t s i g n i f i c a n t l o n g r a n g e c o n t r i b u t i o n to H o p e College if it was i n c l u d e d in d e c i s i o n s a b o u t a M a s t e r P l a n for f u t u r e b u i l d i n g . T h e r e is the p o s s i b i l i t y that g a t h e r i n g of s t u d e n t o p i n i o n a b o u t the p a t t e r n s of c a m p u s usa g e c o u l d p r o v e a s useful a s the g a t h e r i n g of i n f o r m a t i o n f r o m outside consultants and from o t h e r colleges.

An e x a m p l e of s t u d e n t p a r t i c i p a t i o n in M a s t e r P l a n c o n s u l t a t i o n m i g h t b e a poll of s t u d e n t s b y students concerning the relat i o n s h i p of the l i b r a r y to the rest of t h e c a m p u s . A h y p o t h e s i s to be tested could be: " D o e s the present l o c a t i o n of the l i b r a r y in rel a t i o n s h i p to the rest of the c a m p u s d i s c o u r a g e brief t r i p s to check o n i n f o r m a t i o n ? " If t h e r e were g r o u n d s for student concern a b o u t the p r e s e n t a r r a n g e m e n t of the c a m p u s , such c o n c e r n m i g h t l e a d student r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s to ask questions a b o u t t h e b u i l d i n g p l a n s for the f u t u r e .

1 m u s t a d m i t t h a t 1, like m a n y f a c u l t y , w o u l d h a v e a vested interest in u r g i n g s t u d e n t s to r a i s e their v o i c e s with a d v i c e a b o u t l o n g - r a n g e p l a n n i n g for H o p e College.

That vested interest i n v o l v e s the p o s s i b i l i t y t h a t even faculty might be consulted about these b a s i c m a t t e r s if the A d m i n i s t r a t i o n a n d B o a r d of T r u s t e e s discovered that there was s o u n d b u s i n e s s s e n s e in c o n s u l t i n g t h o s e w h o a r e to b e s e r v e d b y a new c a m p u s plan. Profile Committee Report

Hope College Enrollment in the Next Ten Years

By T o m H i l d e b r a n d t anchor Editor T h e P r o f i l e C o m m i t t e e of the H o p e C o l l e g e B o a r d of T r u s t e e s has prepared a recommendation o n p r o j e c t e d enrollment and g r o w t h of t h e c o l l e g e , w h i c h will be p r e s e n t e d to t h e B o a r d at its m e e t i n g this w e e k e n d .

T h e c o m m i t t e e , c o m p o s e d of Trustees George Vander Borgh, Dr. F r i t z L e n e l , J o h n S o e t e r , a n d P r e s i d e n t C a l v i n A. V a n d e r W e r f , r e c o m m e n d e d t h a t " t h e B o a r d of Trustees go on record as p l a n n i n g a n i n c r e a s e in t h e n u m b e r of stud e n t s until it r e a c h e s 2 < (j()() to 2 , 7 0 0 ten y e a r s h e n c e . " T w o Alternatives T w o a l t e r n a t i v e s f o r the p r o j e c t ed s t u d e n t e n r o l l m e n t w e r e cons i d e r e d . T h e first w a s to p l a c e a n a b s o l u t e limit o n e n r o l l m e n t at 2.000 students. T h e second was the p l a n r e c o m m e n d e d in t h e report.

The recommendation enumerated the a r g u m e n t s in f a v o r of freezing e n r o l l m e n t . T h e s e a r e t h a t inc r e a s i n g c o l l e g e size i n c r e a s e s t h e difficulty in m a i n t a i n i n g a s e n s e of i n s t i t u t i o n a l c o m m u n i t y a n d p u r p o s e , d e c r e a s e s i n v o l v e m e n t of s t u d e n t s in c o n s t r u c t i v e c a m p u s activities, d e c r e a s e s o p p o r t u n i t y for effective a n d i n t i m a t e s t u d e n t f a c u l t y c o n t a c t , a n d i n c r e a s e s total costs.

D e s p i t e t h e s e o b j e c t i o n s , however, t h e a b s o l u t e limit p l a n w a s d i s c a r d e d . The r e c o m m e n d a t i o n lists f i v e a r g u m e n t s in f a v o r of the " g r a d u a l , c o n t r o l l e d a n d regu l a t e d g r o w t h " to t h e 2 , 6 0 0 student m a r k .

Moral Commitment F i r s t , t h e c o m m i t t e e felt t h a t it a n d t h e B o a r d of T r u s t e e s were m o r a l l y c o m m i t t e d to i n c r e a s e t h e e n r o l l m e n t t o at least 2 . 5 7 5 stud e n t s a s w a s p r e d i c t e d in t h e 19()2 Profile C o m m i t t e e Report.

F o r o n e t h i n g , this r e p o r t w a s s u b m i t t e d in g o o d f a i t h to the F o r d F o u n d a t i o n , citing t h a t figure a s the projected enrollment for t h e 1 9 7 1 - 1 9 7 2 a c a d e m i c y e a r and planning faculty growth and s a l a r i e s , e x p a n s i o n of facilities and tuition accordingly.

In a d d i t i o n , t h e P r o f i l e R e p o r t , including the projected enrollment figure, w a s presented b y the B o a r d a n d P r e s i d e n t I r w i n .1. L u b b e r s a s t h e a c c e p t e d g o a l of t h e college to Dr. V a n d e r W e r f at the t i m e he w a s c o n s i d e r i n g t h e offer of t h e p r e s i d e n c y of t h e college.

T h e c o n t e n t s of the r e p o r t a n d the " d y n a m i c s p i r i t " e v i d e n c e d in it c e r t a i n l y w e r e s o m e of t h e b a s e s of his d e c i s i o n .

C o n c e p t of I d e a ! Size The recommendation reports that 2 5 y e a r s a g o , o n l y c o l l e g e s with fewer t h a n 5 0 0 s t u d e n t s were c o n s i d e r e d s m a l l . T o d a y , t h e accepted figure for smallness is 5 , 0 0 0 . T h i s c h a n g e , it c o n t i n ues, " h a s c o m e a b o u t b o t h a s the r e s u l t of t h e e x p l o s i o n of k n o w l e d g e a n d of a m u c h k e e n e r s e n s e of the r e s p o n s i b i l i t y of a n instit u t i o n of h i g h e r l e a r n i n g in meeting t h e n e e d s of t h e s t u d e n t a n d the d e m a n d w h i c h s o c i e t y p l a c e s u p o n its m e m b e r s t o d a y . "

T h i s e x p l o s i o n of k n o w l e d g e b r i n g s a b o u t a need f o r i n c r e a s ed f a c u l t y . T h e r e p o r t a p p r o a c h e s t h e p r o b l e m of i d e a l f a c u l t y size f r o m the d e p a r t m e n t a l s t a n d p o i n t .

H o p e C o l l e g e will s o o n offer m a j o r s in 22 d e p a r t m e n t s . Most, a c c o r d i n g to the r e p o r t , feel t h a t at l e a s t " f i v e f a c u l t y m e m b e r s a r e n e e d e d in a d e p a r t m e n t to p r o v i d e i n s t r u c t o r s c o m p e t e n t in the p r i m a r v s u b d i v i s i o n s of the discipline.

F o r m o s t d e p a r t m e n t s the n u m b e r is g r e a t e r t h a n this. F o r instance, the h i s t o r y d e p a r t m e n t h a s s e v e n f a c u l t y m e m b e r s , the Eng l i s h d e p a r t m e n t h a s eleven, the chemistry d e p a r t m e n t has seven, t h e r e a r e n i n e t e a c h e r s of m u s i c , a n d six m e n t e a c h in t h e r e l i g i o n a n d Bible d e p a r t m e n t .

Attracting Strength H o p e ' s s u r v i v a l as a significant i n s t i t u t i o n of e d u c a t i o n , s a y s the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n , d e p e n d s o n its ability to attract g o o d s t u d e n t s a n d f a c u l t y . " T h e finest p r o s p e c t i v e f a c u l t y m e m b e r s , w h e n interv i e w e d f o r p o s i t i o n s at H o p e , almost without exception, inquire c o n c e r n i n g t h e p r o j e c t e d size of the d e p a r t m e n t for which they a r e b e i n g c o n s i d e r e d , " it c o n t i n u e s .

In p r e v i o u s i n t e r v i e w s . President VanderWerf h a s c o m m e n t e d " T h e only thing that attracts s t r e n g t h is s t r e n g t h . If H o p e is to c o n t i n u e a t t r a c t i n g t o p - n o t c h fac u l t y , it m u s t b u i l d d e p a r t m e n t s t h a t will s t i m u l a t e t h e m . " S t u d e n t s a r e a l s o c o n c e r n e d with academic challenge. The report states that m a n y fine students do not a p p l y to H o p e b e c a u s e t h e y feel t h a t t h e a c a d e m i c a t m o s p h e r e h e r e will n o t s i g n i f i c a n t l y c h a l l e n g e t h e i r m i n d s . Statistics c o n cerning r e a s o n s for transferring to o t h e r i n s t i t u t i o n s i n d i c a t e t h a t s t u d e n t s d o s o b e c a u s e of the l i m i t a t i o n s i m p o s e d o n the e d u c a tional c h a l l e n g e at Hope by f a c u l t y size. /Ml t h e s e f a c t o r s i n d i c a t e t h a t t h e faculty must g r o w appreciably in the next d e c a d e , a n d t h e r e f o r e the student b o d y m u s t grow prop o r t i o n a t e l y to s u p p o r t it.

C o m m i t m e n t to C o n s t i t u e n c i e s Reliable estimates indicate that c o l l e g e e n r o l l m e n t will i n c r e a s e b y a m i n i m u m of fifty p e r cent o v e r t h e next ten y e a r s . H o p e C o l l e g e is r e s p o n s i b l e to t h e c o n s t i t u e n c i e s which s u p p o r t it in o n e w a y or a n o t h e r f o r p r o v i d i n g the s a m e q u a l i t y e d u c a t i o n it h a s in the p a s t f o r i n c r e a s i n g n u m b e r s of s t u d e n t s t h a t will a p p l y h e r e in the future.

T h i s y e a r a p p r o x i m a t e l y 17 per cent of all R e f o r m e d C h u r c h y o u t h e n r o l l e d in i n s t i t u t i o n s of h i g h e r l e a r n i n g attend the three R.C.A. colleges, Hope, Central and N o r t h w e s t e r n . If t h e n u m b e r of R.C.A. s t u d e n t s a t t e n d i n g college r e m a i n s p a r a l l e l w i t h the n a t i o n a l a v e r a g e a n d if H o p e m a i n t a i n s t h e "current rather desirable balance between Reformed C h u r c h a n d non-Reformed Church students," t h e p e r c e n t a g e of R . C . A . y o u t h at their o w n c h u r c h c o l l e g e s will fall " c o n s i d e r a b l y b e l o w t h e p e r c e n t a g e u s u a l l y c o n s i d e r e d a mini m u m if t h e c h u r c h is to m a i n t a i n

In a d d i t i o n , e a c h of the t h i r t e e n a l u m n i g r o u p s a r o u n d t h e c o u n t r y h a v e b e e n a s k e d to choose a prospective s t u d e n t c h a i r m a n to t a l k to s t u d e n t s interested in a t t e n d i n g H o p e , acc o r d i n g to M r s . M a r i a n S t r y k e r , D i r e c t o r of A l u m n i R e l a t i o n s .

State Obligations Other c o n s t i t u e n c i e s a r e not c o n nected with t h e R e f o r m e d C h u r c h .

T h e r e c e n t l y a d o p t e d c o d e of the A s s o c i a t i o n of I n d e p e n d e n t Colleges a n d U n i v e r s i t i e s of Michig a n r e c o m m e n d s a s o n e of the six p r o v i s i o n s to b e i n c l u d e d in the state p l a n for higher education t h e f o l l o w i n g : " E n c o u r a g e the p r i v a t e l y s p o n s o r e d colleges a n d univcirsities to i n c r e a s e their enrollment o n a m a x i m u m bas i s . " T h e s t a t e l e g i s l a t u r e of Michigan h a s recently a d o p t e d b o t h a scholarship plan and a grantin-aid p l a n b a s e d o n t h e a s s u m p tion t h a t this w o u l d be d o n e .

A c c o r d i n g to statistics r e l e a s e d b y the a f o r e m e n t i o n e d g r o u p , H o p e College has h a d the smallest p e r c e n t a g e i n c r e a s e in enrollm e n t since 1 9 6 0 . C o m p a r e d with 8 0 . 7 p e r cent i n c r e a s e at A n d r e w s College, H o p e ' s student b o d y h a s o n l y i n c r e a s e d 1 5 . 8 per cent.

Federal grants and subsidies a r e m a d e t o p r i v a t e c o l l e g e s on the a s s u m p t i o n t h a t t h e y will p r o vide an education for an increasi n g n u m b e r of s t u d e n t s . T h e r e p o r t s t a t e s t h a t a r e c o r d of r e c e n t g r o w t h a n d a p l e d g e of c o n t i n u e d e x p a n s i o n a r e p r i m a r y criteria u s e d b y t h e s t a t e of M i c h i g a n f o r a w a r d i n g funds. Almost e v e r y g r a n t m a d e t h r o u g h t h e Michi g a n C o l l e g e s P ' o u n d a t i o n is g i v e n with t h e tacit o r explicitly s t a t e d u n d e r s t a n d i n g that the recipients will e n r o l l t h e i r s h a r e of M i c h i g a n s t u d e n t s in t h e c o m i n g d e c a d e .

" It c o n c e r n e d last s u m m e r ' s A r a b - I s r a e l i w a r w h i c h we a r e told w a s " t h e m o s t s e r i o u s setb a c k Christendom has h a d since t h e f a l l o f C o n s t a n t i n o p l e in 1453."

C o n t a i n e d in this piece w a s a rather passionate denouncement of t h e I s r a e l i " a g g r e s s o r s , " a n d a c o r r e l a t i v e call to aid the A r a b s w h o were d i s p l a c e d b e f o r e the Z i o n i s t " o n s l a u g h t . " We a r e called u p o n t o r e m e m b e r t h a t " t h e A r a b C h u r c h is a s t r u l y the b o d y of Christ as the American r Church." "We Cannot Remain Silent" was more than a h u m a n i t a r i a n r e s p o n s e t o the plight of the innocent. It w a s m o r e t h a n a n a p p e a l t o o u r s y m p a t h i e s . It w a s a n attempt to arouse prejudicial feelings.

T H E F A C T T H A T the " H e r a i d " c h o s e to call the A r a b s o u r C h r i s t i a n b r o t h e r s w h o s t o o d in o p p o s i t i o n to the " Z i o n i s t J e w s " c a n h a r d l y be classified a s concili a t o r y l i t e r a t u r e . It w a s a definitive, s c h i s m a t i c s t a t e m e n t c o n t a i n ing highly d e r o g a t o r y overtones.

In effect, t h e p e o p l e of I s r a e l bec a m e a b a n d of i n s u r g e n t Antic h r i s t s . T h e " H e r a l d " c h o s e to call a s p a d e a d e f o r m e d shovel.

e r a d i c a t e the b l i g h t of b i g o t r y through both enforced l e g a l i t y a n d m e n t a l p e r s u a s i o n , the " Hera l d " c o n t i n u e s to c l i n g t o t h e idea that their faith g i v e s t h e m a s u p e r iority in t e r m s of m o r a l j u d g m e n t .

It m i g h t v e r y well b e s a i d that the i n t e n t i o n of " W e C a n n o t Rem a i n S i l e n t " w a s not to i n d u c e a s u r g e of p r e j u d i c i a l e m o t i o n . Maybe not. H o w e v e r , it c a n n o t be denied t h a t the m a i n t h o u g h t of the e d i t o r i a l w a s t h e guilt of Israel.

Such j u d g m e n t s c a r r y with them the idea of a b s o l u t e r i g h t e o u s n e s s .

THE "HERALD" w a n t s to s h o v e the issue off the level of reality a n d o n t o t h e level of m o r ality -- a m o v e which t e n d s to b l u r the r a t i o n a l p r o c e s s e s a n d e m p h a size the e m o t i o n a l .
