T h e new 2 4 - m e m b e r B o a r d m u s t elect o f f i c e r s f o r the c o m i n g y e a r , d e c i d e on the size a n d election p r o c e d u r e for its e x e c u t i v e committee, and determine convenient m e e t i n g d a t e s . " W e h a v e q u i t e a n u m b e r of other topics u p for d i s c u s s i o n , " s a i d P r e s i d e n t C a l v i n A. V a n d e r Werf.

C o n s t r u c t i o n w o r k on V o o r h e e s H a l l , the p r o p o s e d new science b u i l d i n g a n d the p r o p o s e d p h y s i cal e d u c a t i o n b u i l d i n g will all be the c o n c e r n of the B o a r d , he s a i d . Gift Enables Purchase

College Acquires Rusk Building H o p e C o l l e g e h a s a c q u i r e d the v a c a n t H o l l a n d Husk b u i l d i n g in downtown Holland, President C a l v i n A. V a n d e r W e r f a n n o u n c e d today.

The building was purchased by m e a n s of a gift f r o m t h e Dewey D. a n d H a t t i e B a t t j e s F o u n d a t i o n .

No purchase price w a s a n nounced.

T h e f o r m e r o w n e r w a s the N a t i o n a l Biscuit C o m p a n y of N e w York.

The C o l l e g e h a s p r e l i m i n a r y p l a n s to c o n v e r t p a r t of the b u i j d ing f o r use b y the a r t d e p a r t m e n t .

"Presently o u r facilities a r e s p r e a d all o v e r c a m p u s , " s a i d Delbert Michel of t h e art d e p a r t m e n t f a c u l t y . With Hope for 18 Years

Dr. Paul G, Fried and His 'Substitute Family' By

T o d a y a squat, balding m a n will receive the " G o l d e n e Ehrenzeichen fuer Verdienste u m d i e Republik Oesterreich" (Gold M e d a l of Merit f o r s e r v i c e to the R e p u b l i c of A u s t r i a ) .

T H A T M A N IS Dr. P a u l G e o r g e F r i e d , c h a i r m a n of H o p e ' s hist o r y d e p a r t m e n t a n d D i r e c t o r of International Education, who has s e r v e d H o p e C o l l e g e a n d its stud e n t s a s well a s A u s t r i a f o r m o r e t h a n a decade.

Dr. F r i e d , b o r n in L e i p z i g , emig r a t e d to t h e U n i t e d States in 1 9 3 9 . His uncle, A l f r e d F r i e d , w a s a p a c i f i s t w h o w o n the N o b e l Peace Prize in 1 9 1 1 , a n d his f a t h e r , P a u l , w a s a n e w s p a p e r e d i t o r in B e r l i n w h o h a d v i g o r o u s l y editorialized a g a i n s t Adolf Hitler in t h e 1 9 3 2 p t e s i d e n t i a l election in G e r m a n y .

F O R T H E S E R E A S O N S , the Fried family was persona non g r a t a to the N a t i o n a l S o c i a l i s t s , a n d , a f t e r the A n s c h l u s s of Aust r i a in 1 9 3 8 , Dr. F r i e d w a s i n c a r c e r a t e d f o r six w e e k s b y t h e Gest a p o , which w a s l o o k i n g for his fugitive father. " I g u e s s they figured t h a t a r r e s t i n g the w r o n g P a u l F r i e d w a s better t h a n a r r e s t i n g n o b o d y , " he s a i d .

Dr. F r i e d e n r o l l e d in H o p e College in 1 9 4 0 — a n e v e n t w h i c h he called " a l m o s t an accident." A f r i e n d of his w a s w o r k i n g f o r t h e W o r l d C o u n c i l of C h u r e h e s , a n d Dr. F r i e d w r o t e t o h i m c o n c e r n i n g c o l l e g e s t u d y in the U n i t e d States. T h e f r i e n d w a s a w a y w h e n t h e letter a r r i v e d , b u t h i s a s s i s t a n t , a H o p e g r a d u a t e , a r r a n g e d a full tuition scholarship at Hope. ( " T h a t really wasn't such a big deal. Tuition for a semester w a s only $ 6 2 . 5 0 then," Dr. F r i e d q u i p ped.) T h u s b e g a n his affiliation with H o p e C o l l e g e .

IN 1 9 4 2 H E b e g a n a threey e a r stint in the U n i t e d S t a t e s A r m y , d u r i n g w h i c h he w a s p r o moted t o Staff S e r g e a n t a n d a w a r d e d the B r o n z e S t a r a n d a Certificate of Merit.

In 1 9 4 5 Dr. F r i e d r e t u r n e d t o Hope and was graduated cum l a u d e t h e f o l l o w i n g y e a r . He received h i s M.A. in h i s t o r y f r o m H a r v a r d U n i v e r s i t y in 1 9 4 7 .

At this t i m e he r e t u r n e d to Germ a n y to a s s u m e the p o s t of chief of the T r a n s l a t i o n S e c t i o n f o r t h e F o r e i g n Office C a s e of the N u r e m berg War Tribunal. He remained t h e r e until 1 9 4 9 .

"THE NUREMBERG Trials w e r e a n excellent o p p o r t u n i t y f o r the h i s t o r i a n i n t e r e s t e d in c o n t e m p o r a r y h i s t o r y , b e c a u s e t h e r e the h i g h e s t e c h e l o n of a m o d e r n ind u s t r i a l state w a s e x p o s e d f i v e y e a r s a f t e r its c o l l a p s e . It u s u a l l y t a k e s 5 0 y e a r s f o r t h a t k i n d of inf o r m a t i o n to be u n c o v e r e d , " Dr. Fried said.

" I did m y doctoral dissertation on the v M u n i c h c r i s i s , " h e c o n t i n u e d , " b u t I h a d to p r o m i s e t h a t it w o u l d n o t b e p u b l i s h e d , b e c a u s e the d o c u m e n t s w e r e n o t yet p u b lished. It's r a r e t h a t a h i s t o r i a n gets a n o p p o r t u n i t y l i k e t h a t . " HE R E C E I V E D H I S Ph.D. f r o m the U n i v e r s i t y of E r l a n g e n , m a g n a c u m l a u d e , in 1 9 4 9 a n d did p o s t - d o c t o r a l r e s e a r c h at H a r v a r d . He t h e n e n t e r e d t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s Air F o r c e H i s t o r i c a l Res e a r c h D i v i s i o n , w h e r e he rem a i n e d until he j o i n e d t h e H o p e f a c u l t y in 1 9 5 3 .

Dr. F r i e d r e s i g n e d f r o m the Air F o r c e position without definite arr a n g e m e n t s f o r a t e a c h i n g position, a n d received f r o m Hope a s a l a r y m o r e t h a n 5 0 p e r cent less t h a n w h a t he received f r o m t h e Air F o r c e . " B U T I D I D it with n o r e g r e t s , " he s a i d . " I l i k e s t u d e n t s ; I like r e a d i n g ; I like t a l k i n g a n d I like history. I would have involved myself in these t h i n g s in m y leis u r e t i m e if t h e y w e r e n ' t i n v o l v e d in m y w o r k . T e a c h i n g h a s g i v e n m e a c h a n c e to h a v e m y c a k e a n d eat it."

The y e a r 1 9 5 6 saw the beginn i n g of t h e H o p e C o l l e g e V i e n n a S u m m e r S c h o o l . Dr. F r i e d des c r i b e d t h e b e g i n n i n g s of the p r o g r a m thusly: " I N T H A T F I R S T y e a r of the Vienna S u m m e r School there w a s o n l y o n e i n s t r u c t o r . In m y s p a r e time I a l s o d r o v e one o f t h e b u s e s , o r d e r e d m e a l s f o r the g r o u p , p a i d bills, a r r a n g e d e x c u r s i o n s a n d tried to h e l p s t u d e n t s t o p r a c t i c e their G e r m a n w h i l e we d r o v e t h r o u g h the c o u n t r y s i d e . " O v e r t h e y e a r s Dr. F r i e d h a s w o r n m a n y h a t s in V i e n n a . " A s a m a t t e r of f a c t , " he s a i d , " a b o u t the o n l y h a t I h a v e n ' t w o r n is t h a t of D e a n of W o m e n . " He h a s been c h a u f f e u r , i n s t r u c t o r , t o u r guide, c o u n s e l o r and h a s even s e r v e d a s f r i e n d of t h e c o u r t f o r three H o p e students w h o had " t o e x p l a i n h o w their t r a v e l i n g i r o n h a d h a p p e n e d to d r o p f r o m a fourth floor window ontothe hood of a c a r p a r k e d b e l o w , s c a r i n g the l i v i n g d a y l i g h t s out of a n old gentleman on his evening w a l k . " H E E N J O Y S D I R E C T I N G the p r o g r a m b e c a u s e t h r o u g h it " w e can create opportunities that w o u l d b e difficult o r i m p o s s i b l e to f i n d at h o m e . D u r i n g the Czech c r i s i s we c o u l d h a v e the F i r s t S e c r e t a r y of t h e Czech E m b a s s y in V i e n n a s p e a k to t h e g r o u p .

H o w m u c h w o u l d it h a v e cost to get D e a n R u s k h e r e ? " " I n a d d i t i o n , the g r o u p is s m a l l e n o u g h f o r m e to h a v e i n t e n s e p e r s o n a l c o n t a c t with s t u d e n t s t h a t is i m p o s s i b l e h e r e , " h e a d d e d . " B o t h the students a n d I h a v e fewer c o m m i t m e n t s t h e r e , a n d a r e m o r e a c c e s s i b l e to e a c h o t h e r .

T h e s t u d y of h i s t o r y is the m o s t o b v i o u s m e a n s of s e e i n g the w o r l d a s a w h o l e , n o t j u s t in o n e d i m e n s i o n . " M o s t t h i n g s I d o , " he s a i d , " I see a s a n a n t i - p r o v i n c i a l i s m bill. T h i s is m y a p p r o a c h to hist o r y . It is a l s o the r a t i o n a l e beh i n d the V i e n n a S u m m e r S c h o o l .

Its f o u n d e r s felt t h a t H o p e stud e n t s n e e d e d the o p p o r t u n i t y to get b e y o n d t h e limits of t h e i r h o r i z o n . A s t u d e n t ' s a p p r o a c h to his o w n s o c i e t y t a k e s o n a new a n d d e e p e r p e r s p e c t i v e when he g o e s abroad."

He a l s o feels t h a t " h i s t o r y is t h e m o s t u s e f u l vehicle f o r und e r s t a n d i n g the present."

DR. F R I E D H A S been a m e m b e r of t h e H o p e C o l l e g e c o m m u n ity f o r a t o t a l of 18 y e a r s . " I like it h e r e , " he s a i d . " I like the s t u d e n t s , the f a c u l t y a n d the t o w n .

H o p e h a s offered me m o r e o p p o r -

" 1 h a v e a s e n s e of i d e n t i t y with H o p e that I d o n ' t h a v e a n y w h e r e else. I h a v e n o f a m i l y , a n d I s u p pose that a psychologist would call H o p e a ' s u b s t i t u t e f a m i l y ' for me. But I b e l i e v e in w h a t H o p e d o e s , a n d t h a t to m e is the b i g g e s t investment a m a n can m a k e . "

The Law, Gun Control and America S o m e would have us believe that o u r Constitutional rights are b e i n g i n f r i n g e d . Others s a y t h a t we will be left defenseless. M o r e a r e just a f r a i d of c h a n g e a n d d o not k n o w h o w to c o p e with it. N o m a t t e r w h a t the excuse f o r t h w a r t i n g g u n c o n t r o l legislation, A m e r i c a n s h a v e l o n g o v e r s l e p t o n this issue.

WE A R E I N D E B T E D to J o h n F. K e n n e d y , M a l c o l m X, M e d g e r Evers, Martin Luther K i n g . Jr. a n d Robert F . K e n n e d y f o r r o u s ing u s out of s l u m b e r i n t o a m o d erate lethargy.

Most of the o p p o s i t i o n to e v e r y f o r m of g u n c o n t r o l in this c o u n try stems f r o m misconceptions c o n c e r n i n g its p u r p o s e s a n d limits. N o t entirely a b s e n t f r o m the r e s i s t i n g side is d e p e n d e n c e u p o n archaic and irrational arguments.

T H E F I R S T R E A S O N g i v e n to h i n d e r l e g i s l a t i o n in this a r e a c o m e s in the f o r m of the S e c o n d A m e n d m e n t to the C o n s t i t u t i o n .

It r e a d s : " A well r e g u l a t e d Militia, b e i n g n e c e s s a r y t o the security of a free state, the r i g h t of the people to keep and bear Arms, s h a l l not be i n f r i n g e d . " T o a few—a p o w e r f u l few, specifically the N a t i o n a l Rife Assoc i a t i o n — t h i s is a n a b s o l u t e d i c t u m on p a r with the Ten C o m m a n d m e n t s (except, p e r h a p s , f o r the

sixth).

However, putting o n e ' s f a i t h in the s t a t e m e n t of a d o c u ment without k n o w i n g and e v a l u a t i n g the r e a s o n s b e h i n d it is m y o p i c a n d t e n d s to d i m i n i s h theeffectiveness of t h a t d o c u m e n t w h a t e v e r it m a y be.

W H E N F I R S T c o n c e i v e d , the i d e a of a c i v i l i a n militia w a s a p r a c t i c a l one. A citizen with a rifle c o u l d v e r y well fight either Redc o a t or R e d s k i n w h o a l s o h a d a rifle.

T o d a y the c i v i l i a n " m i n u t e m a n " is a n a n a c h r o n i s m . A n y inv a s i o n b y the m o d e r n " R e d s " w o u l d s u r e l y not b e w a r d e d off b y the f a m i l y m a n p l i n k i n g at the e n e m y f r o m b e h i n d a tree in his b a c k y a r d . Rifles a n d h a n d g u n s h a d v e r y little effect a g a i n s t the t a n k s in H u n g a r y in 195(i.

N E X T TO T H E G u n - C l u b S p e a r - S t i c k s - a n d - S t o n e s g r o u p in o u r b a n d of C o n s t i t u t i o n a l defende r s a r e t h o s e w h o believe t h a t their right to " b e a r a r m s " i s e q u a l to their right to f r e e d o m of s p e e c h , the p r e s s a n d r e l i g i o n .

M a y b e t h e y a r e c o r r e c t . If so, we h a v e l a w s p r e v e n t i n g o u r use of s l a n d e r , d e f a m a t i o n of c h a r a c t e r a n d obscenities, b u t n o n e r e g u l a t ing o u r p u r c h a s e of such u s e f u l objects as m a c h i n e g u n s , baz o o k a s a n d live h a n d g r e n a d e s .

F r e e d o m s h o u l d be d i s t i n g u i s h able f r o m insanity.

A N O T H E R R E A S O N g i v e n is that g u n s a r e n e e d e d in p r o t e c t i n g one's home against burglars, murderers and rapists.

You A l u m n i r e p r e s e n t H o p e w h e r e v e r y o u are. You a r e the c u t t i n g e d g e of y o u r A l m a M a t e r a r o u n d the w o r l d . H o p e is g r e a t a n d distinguished because you are both competent and noble.

A n d we at H o p e like to t h i n k t h a t w h e r e v e r there is a H o p e u n d e r g r a d u a t e s t u d e n t , there, t o o . respect f o r H o p e r u n s h i g h .

A T HOPE, we h e s i t a t e to d o this. W e — a n d y o u — k n o w t h a t stud e n t s a r e all different. We like to t h i n k that this College is still s m a l l e n o u g h , still p e r s o n a l e n o u g h , still c a r e s e n o u g h , t o c o n s i d e r e a c h student a s the u n i q u e i n d i v i d u a l hum a n b e i n g he is.

As we get t o k n o w o u r s t u d e n t s a s i n d i v i d u a l s , we s o o n l e a r n t h a t each is s o m e t h i n g special. A l m o s t without exception, our students are both responsive and responsible. 1 h a v e s a i d often, a n d I m e a n e v e r y w o r d of it, t h a t I w o u l d not t r a d e o u r s t u d e n t s f o r a n y o t h e r s t u d e n t b o d y in the n a tion.

T h e t r u t h is t h a t these a l m o s t a d u l t s c o m e to u s just a b o u t a s y o u A l u m n i sent t h e m . I ' v e been o n this c a m p u s l o n g e n o u g h n o w to state with c e r t a i n t y t h a t s o m e t h i n g d o e s h a p p e n to a s t u d e n t d u r i n g his f o u r y e a r s here. A n d in the v a s t m a j o r i t y of c a s e s t h a t s o m e t h i n g is g o o d !

A T T H E S A M E time, s o m e t h i n g h a p p e n s to u s which is g o o d . F o r we l e a r n f r o m o u r s t u d e n t s — p e r h a p s just a s m u c h a s they l e a r n f r o m us.

We d o n ' t dwell o n the g e n e r a t i o n g a p at H o p e . T h o s e of us in the F a c u l t y G e n e r a t i o n a d m i r e the d i s a v o w a l of the s i n c e r e m e m b e r s of t h e Pepsi G e n e r a t i o n o n o u r c a m p u s of the w h o l e conc e pt t h a t m a t e r i a l g o a l s a r e the m o s t imp o r t a n t g o a l s in life. We a p p l a u d the sincere m a j o r i t y — a n d we w o r k with them!—in their h o n e s t a t t e m p t to realize the C h r i s t i a n i d e a l s they h a v e heard our generation proclaim.

We a r e h a p p y , a s we r e a s o n a n d w o r k with o u r s t u d e n t s a s indiv i d u a l s , to find that v e r y f e w h a v e t a k e n o n f o r m s a n d styles w h i c h h a v e n o t h i n g to d o with the i d e a l s they p r o f e s s — f o r m s a n d styles w h i c h c a n b e c o m e just a s p h o n y a s the p h o n i e s t of o u r g e n e r a t i o n .

WE TRY TO l o o k at the world* t h r o u g h their e y e s a n d to enc o u r a g e t h e m to l o o k at it t h r o u g h ours.

At H o p e we believe that if we cherish and value maturity and a s e n s e of r e s p o n s i b i l i t y , then we m u s t c u l t i v a t e the c l i m a t e w h i c h fosters and develops them.

T h i s is o n e r e a s o n we m a i n t a i n that students h a v e a legitimate role in d e c i s i o n m a k i n g ; o n e r e a s o n we h o l d the c o n v i c t i o n t h a t t h o s e for w h o m the e d u c a t i o n a l p r o g r a m is p r i m a r i l y d e s i g n e d

c r i m i n a l a l w a y s h a s the a d v a n t a g e of s u r p r i s e , 3 ) the c r i m i n a l is p r o b a b l y m o r e a w a k e t h a n o n e w h o h a s just been a r o u s e d f r o m sleep a n d 4 ) it is t o o e a s y to mist a k e a m e m b e r of o n e ' s o w n f a m ily f o r a p r o w l e r in the d a r k .

It is s a f e r , in m o s t c a s e s , t o g i v e the b u r g l a r w h a t he w a n t s t h a n to put u p a n a b o r t i v e defense.

T H E T H I R D MAJOR r e a s o n g i v e n f o r b l o c k i n g g u n c o n t r o l is, " I have an inalienable h u m a n right to o w n g u n s . " Whether or not this is t r u e in o u r c r o w d e d society t o d a y 1 will not a r g u e . T h e point is that this is r e a l l y not a r e a s o n but a statement of creed. It is p r e s e n t e d a s a defense with the u n d e r l y i n g f e a r that a n y r e s t r i c t i o n s o n g u n owne r s h i p will result in a n e v e n t u a l d e n i a l of a n y p e r s o n a l o w n e r s h i p b y the g o v e r n m e n t .

A c t u a l l y , the g u n l e g i s l a t i o n p r o p o s e d b y S e n a t o r T h o m a s J. D o d d a n d o t h e r s is not a i m e d at the c o m p e t e n t h u n t e r n o r the m a r k s m a n . It d o e s n o t c o n t r i v e t o prohibit legitimate hunting a n d sport weapons.

IT D O E S HOPE to p r e v e n t the p o t e n t i a l a n d a c t u a l C h a r l e s Whitm a n s a n d Lee H a r v e y O s w a l d s f r o m o b t a i n i n g their f i r e a r m s at the s a m e c o r n e r s t o r e with E v e r y m a n ' s g r a n d f a t h e r a n d J. E d g a r Hoover.

S o m e b a s i c p r o p o s a l s f o r a n effective g u n c o n t r o l are: 1 ) regist r a t i o n of all w e a p o n s a n d their o w n e r s , 2 ) m a n d a t o r y licenses f o r all g u n m e r c h a n t s , 3 ) a test of the b u y e r ' s k n o w l e d g e of g u n safety, 4 ) a p r o f i c i e n c y test, 5 ) a n eye test, 6) a m i n i m u m a g e limit on m i n o r s o p e r a t i n g a gun-

a n d 7 ) a p s y c h o l o g i c a l test to det e r m i n e o n e ' s s t a b i l i t y with a weapon.

M A N Y OF T H E accidents c a n be p r e v e n t e d b y e d u c a t i o n . Most of the h o m i c i d e s that o c c u r in o u r c o u n t r y a r e a p r o d u c t of a s u d d e n fit of i r r i t a t i o n , or a d e r a n g e d m i n d p l u s tbe c o n v e n i e n t a v a i l a bility of a g u n . In these c a s e s prev e n t i o n is m o r e u n d e r s t a n d a b l e than punishment.

P e r h a p s the best p r e v e n t a t i v e (J the m i s u s e of g u n s w o u l d be a dec e l e r a t i o n in o u r w o r s h i p o f l e t h a l w e a p o n s a n d o u r e q u a t i n g extreme m a n h o o d with violence.

N e i t h e r the v i c a r i o u s i n d u l g e n c e in idealized v i o l e n c e n o r the weap o n s u s e d in it is a c a t h a r s i s for o u r o w n violent n a t u r e .

IN T H E S E P T E M B E R 19HH issue of " P s y c h o l o g y T o d a y , " L e o n a r d B e r k o w i t z w r o t e an art icle e n t i t l e d , " I m p u l s e , A g g r e s s i o n a n d the G u n . " F r o m his experim e n t s with c o l l e g e s t u d e n t s a n d s m a l l c h i l d r e n he f o u n d that the m e r e presence of a g u n d u r i n g the testing s e s s i o n s a m p l i f i e d the a g g r e s s i v e t e n d e n c i e s of the subjects.

T h e r e s e e m s to be a direct rel a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n the sight of w e a p o n s of v i o l e n c e a n d the act of violence. It is o b v i o u s that o u r lawmakers cannot accomplish w h a t the i n d i v i d u a l a n d the entire c u l t u r e r e f u s e to d o f o r t h e m s e l v e s .

LEGISLATION WILL NOT c o m p l e t e l y e l i m i n a t e c r i m e b u t it will s i g n i f i c a n t l y r e d u c e the n u m b e r of g u n s p r e s e n t l y l e g a l l y s o l d in o u r c o u n t r y to m i n o r s a n d inc o m p e t e n t s , a n d w o u l d m a k e registration, education a n d responsibility a s m u c h a p a r t of o w n i n g a gun as an automobile.

s h o u l d h a v e a n o p p o r t u n i t y to react to the n a t u r e of t h e prog r a m a n d to s u g g e s t w a y s of imp r o v i n g it; o n e r e a s o n we feel that each student has an authentic p a r t to p l a y in s h a p i n g the s t r u c t u r e of the society a n d prog r a m of which he is a p a r t ; one r e a s o n s t u d e n t s p a r t i c i p a t e res p o n s i b l y on e v e r y m a j o r b o a r d and c o m m i t t e e on c a m p u s in a w a y t h a t h a s b e c o m e a m o d e l for colleges a c r o s s the n a t i o n .

O N T H E O T H E R h a n d , neither we n o r a m a j o r i t y of o u r s t u d e n t s suffer f r o m the illusion of i n s t a n t m a t u r i t y . We all u n d e r s t a n d that a s t u d e n t is h e r e p r i m a r i l y t o l e a r n a n d t h a t his p a s t e x p e r i e n c e h a s been limited. We all r e a l i z e , too, t h a t the better s t u d e n t s , at least, are not on c a m p u s long e n o u g h to a s s u m e c o n t i n u i n g r e s p o n s i b i l ity f o r the College.

So, A l u m n i , d o n ' t w o r r y f o r f e a r the S t u d e n t s a r e " r u n n i n g t h e College."

The victorious candidate next month, no matter who he is, must lace up to the War in Vietnam and the problems oi racial harmony and poverty. These are the issuer of most significance in 1968 and it is our conviction that a Nixon Administration would be most effective in dealing with these issues.

Mr. Nixon and Mr. Humphrey are equally determined that the Vietnam War must be ended as soon as possible. Mr. Humphrey, however, is still tied to the policies oi the Johnson Administration for

which he w a s the loudest a d v o c a t e d u r i n g his \ ' i c e - P r e s i d e n c y . 11 elected President, he would be w o r k i n g with m a n y ol the s a m e p e r s o n n e l with which Mr. J o h n s o n h a s w o r k e d a n d failed. A N i x o n Administration w o u l d include new people w h o could t a k e a new a p p r o a c h to end the w a r .

Mr. N i x o n w o u l d be free i r o m a n y c o m m i t ment to o u r present policy a n d , hence, could be m o r e flexible in d e a l i n g with H a n o i , P e k i n g a n d Moscow. T h e possibility ol peace seems g r e a t e r with Mr. N i x o n .

Mr. N i x o n seeks to b r i n g the m o s t p o w e r f u l a n d successful l o r c e in A m e r i c a to b e a r o n the p r o b l e m s of the g h e t t o â&#x20AC;&#x201D; o u r p r i v a t e enterprise s y s t e m . H e w a n t s to u s e f e d e r a l power to extend e q u a l o p p o r t u n i t y to all. Mr. Nix on f u r t h e r w a n t s to e n c o u r a g e the e s t a b l i s h m e n t ol a s t r o n g black c a p i t a l i s t s y s t e m , which would give die b l a c k c o m m u n i t y a linancial b a s i s to rise a b o v e the b o t t o m r u n g on the e c o n o m ic l a d d e r . Such a p r o g r a m m a k e s sense and c e r t a i n l y deserves a try. While the lin a n c i a l d r a i n of the w a r c o n t i n u e s in Vietn a m , it v e r v well m i g h t be the o n l y new p r o g r a m we c a n a f l o r d .

She a d d e d t h a t o n l y Mr. H u m p h r e y a n d M r . N i x o n m a k e aff i r m a t i v e s o l u t i o n s t o the p r o b lems facing America today.

C O N C E R N I N G T H E Vietnam War, she said that " w e must h a v e a n e v a l u a t i o n of l o n g - r u n i n t e r e s t s f o r the U n i t e d S t a t e s . " S h e expounded H u m p h r e y ' s willingness to f i n d the m e a n s t o e n d the w a r .

Referring to Mr. N i x o n ' s s t a n d , s h e s a i d s h e w a s o p p o s e d to t h o s e w h o would not reveal their strategy. " T h e r e are no easy solutions to h a r d problems," she s a i d of t h e G O P . " I t is b e c a u s e they d o not know a solution to

the problem that they give n o c l e a r - c u t s t r a t e g y f o r e n d i n g the V i e t n a m W a r . . . B e w a r e of the easy answer."

M o v i n g o n t o the p r o b l e m of world order a n d peace, Mrs. Harr i s s t a t e d t h a t t h e p r o b l e m is t r y i n g to a c h i e v e a s e n s e of s e c u r i t y w h i l e l i v i n g in the c o m m u n i t y in w h i c h we f i n d o u r s e l v e s t o d a y . She said that " w e m u s t r e c o g n i z e the r e a l i t i e s of d i c h o t o m y in A m e r i c a n s o c i e t y .

A N E X A M P L E OF this m i s i n t e r p r e t a t i o n w a s e v i d e n t in l a s t w e e k ' s e d i t o r i a l titled " O n the W a l k o u t . " It a p p e a r s a s if the editor George A r w a d y was m o r e c o n c e r n e d with t h e g o a l s a n d p u r p o s e s of the B l a c k C o a l i t i o n t h a n with t h e essence of t h e b l a c k stud e n t s ' w a l k o u t . H o w e v e r , the C o a lition h a s c o n s t a n t l y i n f o r m e d h i m a s t a t e m e n t f r o m t h e g r o u p ist f o r t h c o m i n g , t h u s the editorial e n d s b y e x p r e s s i n g t h e c u r i o s i t y of most whites on H o p e ' s c a m p u s .

W h y is it t h a t the A d m i n i s t r a t i o n r a n m a k e a statement r e g a r a i n g panty raids b u t c a n n o t c o m m e n t o n the b u r n i n g of c r o s s e s ?

T H I S W E E K ' S s t a t e m e n t put out b y t h e B l a c k C o a l i t i o n ' s IMblic R e l a t i o n s C o m m i t t e e i n d i c a t e s the d i s t o r t i o n s f o u n d in G e o r g e A r w a d y ' s editorial.

I a m in full a g r e e m e n t with the IMblic R e l a t i o n s c o m m i t t e e ' s c o n d e m n a t i o n of t h i s e d i t o r i a l . T h e statement reads as follows: " I N T H E L A S T i s s u e of the a n c h o r s e v e r a l e r r o n e o u s statem e n t s w e r e r a i s e d c o n c e r n i n g the Black Coalition a n d t h e b l a c k s t u d e n t s of H o p e C o l l e g e . We w o u l d like t o c o r r e c t t h e s e e r r o r s . ' " P ' i r s t , it m u s t b e u n d e r s t o o d that the Black C o a l i t i o n a n d black students are not equivalent terms.

M e m b e r s h i p in a g r o u p d o e s n o t eliminate one's individuality. The s t a t e m e n t put b e f o r e the S t u d e n t Senate was signed by 4 3 black students N O T b y the Black Coalition. T h e a n c h o r e d i t o r t h r o u g h o u t his e d i t o r i a l c o n f u s e s the t e r m s B l a c k C o a l i t i o n w i t h b l a c k stud e n t s . Is it t o o m u c h to a s k t h a t the e d i t o r c o m e to g r i p s with his terms?

r e p r e s e n t e d o n these c o m m i t t e e s . " It s h o u l d r e a d , " It h a s b e c o m e a p p a r e n t t h a t a c e r t a i n s e g m e n t of the Hope College c o m m u n i t y h a s • n o t been f a i r l y r e p r e s e n t e d on these c o m m i t t e e s . " T h e o m i s s i o n of the p h r a s e " f a i r l y r e p r e s e n t e d " enabled an editorial argument concerning proportionality rather t h a n fair representation. " G r a n t e d blacks are represented o n the C a m p u s Life B o a r d a n d the Admissions and Educational G r a n t s C o m m i t t e e . H o w e v e r , to the b l a c k c o m m u n i t y t h i s is n o t j u s t . We still r e q u e s t r e p r e s e n t a t i o n o n t h e C u r r i c u l u m a n d the Cultural Affairs Committees. This will e n a b l e a r e c i p r o c a l l y r e w a r d ing relationship between theblack a n d white c o m m u n i t i e s .

apologize for m i s q u o t i n g the black students' statement a n d s l a n d e r i n g the B l a c k C o a l i t i o n , thus causing unnecessary confusion a n d h o s t i l i t y . " The preceding statement clearly refutes the e d i t o r i a l written b y G e o r g e A r w a d y . I a m in a c c o r d with this statement attacking G e o r g e A r w a d y a n d T o m Hildeb r a n d t b e c a u s e these t w o c h o s e to p a r t i c i p a t e in this so-called c o m e d y t h a t h a s a r i s e n since t h e first m e e t i n g of the C o a l i t i o n .

IT IS N O T the C o a l i t i o n ' s f a u l t that white people h a v e such w a r p e d views c o n c e r n i n g them. 1 feel that because black people c o m e t o g e t h e r to meet is n o e x c u s e on t h e p a r t of whites to b e c o m e afraid.

The Black Coalition's business, f o r t h e t i m e b e i n g , r e l a t e s to t h e b l a c k s t u d e n t s a n d n o o n e else.

When t h e C o a l i t i o n is s o u n d l y o r g a n i z e d it will f a i t h f u l l y m a k e a public statement.

" O N E M U S T A L S O note t h e e d i t o r held t h e b l a c k s t u d e n t s res p o n s i b l e for not a n s w e r i n g a q u e s t i o n w h i c h the S e n a t e did n o t a s k . W h y d i d n ' t the e d i t o r c o m m e n t on the l a c k of i n i t i a t i v e , inq u i r y , intelligence a n d j u s t p l a i n c o m m o n s e n s e e x h i b i t e d b y the S t u d e n t S e n a t e ? Is it p r o c e d u r e f o r S e n a t o r s to a c c e p t o r reject a n y n o m i n a t i o n s without questioning their q u a l i f i c a t i o n s or m e t h o d of a p p o i n t m e n t ?

T H E C O A L I T I O N IS n o t segregated as some people h a v e t h o u g h t . S e g r e g a t i o n a n d separ a t i o n a r e t w o different t e r m s .

S e g r e g a t i o n m e a n s f o r c e f u l isol a t i o n of r a c e s on s o c i a l a n d econ o m i c levels. H o w e v e r , s e p a r a t i o n o c c u r s w h e n a g r o u p willf u l l y sets itself a p a r t f r o m t h e rest of the m a s s e s in o r d e r to achieve a c o m m o n purpose or goal.

I l o o k a r o u n d the c a m p u s a n d see a l l - w h i t e f r a t e r n i t i e s a n d sor o r i t i e s , yet n o o n e c h a r g e s t h a t these g r o u p s a r e s e g r e g a t e d . It is m y o p i n i o n t h a t b e c a u s e w h i t e s a r e n o t i n v o l v e d in the B l a c k C o a l i t i o n , t h e y tend to p l a c e b a d c o n n o t a t i o n s o n the g r o u p .

" T H E L A S T P A R A G R A P H of t h e e d i t o r i a l s t a t e d t h a t the w a l k o u t c a u s e d c o n f u s i o n a n d "if the c o n f u s i o n c o n t i n u e s t h i s y e a r it will l e a d t o d i s t r u s t a n d f e a r . . . " H o w e v e r , the o r d e r l y w i t h d r a w a l of the b l a c k s t u d e n t s c a u s e d n o c o n f u s i o n a n d yet t h e e d i t o r failed to c o m m e n t o n the c o n f u s i o n , distrust and f e a r c a u s e d by the K K K t a c t i c s of the b u r n i n g of a c r o s s in f r o n t of C r i s p e l l C o t t a g e . " A s s t a t e d e a r l i e r , the e d i t o r c o n f u s e d the B l a c k C o a l i t i o n a n d the b l a c k s t u d e n t s a n d t h u s e n d s b y s t a t i n g t h a t the B l a c k C o a l i t i o n h a s s h o w n " a n u n w i l l i n g n e s s to c o m m u n i c a t e the l o g i c b e h i n d its p r o p o s a l . " N e v e r h a s the B l a c k Coalition m a d e a n y public proposals.
