AAB studies composite major by Gary Gray T h e A c a d e m i c A f f a i r s Board discussed p r o p o s e d guidelines for a c t i o n o n r e q u e s t s for individual c o m p o s i t e m a j o r s last T u e s d a y . T H E C R I T E R I A b r o u g h t bef o r e t h e b o a r d were part of a p r o p o s a l d r a w n u p by an ad hoc c o m m i t t e e m a d e u p of associate p r o f e s s o r of p h i l o s o p h y A r t h u r II. J e n t z , s t u d e n t Scott Oliver, and p r o f e s s o r of English J o h n Hollenbach. T h e c o m m i t t e e had been directed to e x p l o r e t h e rationale of Hope's composite major program and design a d o c u m e n t which w o u l d e x p r e s s the aims of the p r o g r a m and s u c c i n c t l y e n u m e r a t e guidelines f o r those seeking a composite major. THE DOCUMENT defines a liberal e d u c a t i o n as one which o f f e r s t h e s t u d e n t d e p t h as well as b r e a d t h of i n q u i r y . It stresses that t h e d e p a r t m e n t a l m a j o r is the n o r m a l m e t h o d of o b t a i n i n g that depth. T h e c o m m i t t e e o f f e r e d as the key j u s t i f i c a t i o n for the composite m a j o r t h e idea that d e p a r t m e n t a l b o u n d s are o f t e n fine or o b s c u r e and that for s t u d e n t s with special a c a d e m i c interests, a series
ot c o u r s e s f r o m several d e p a r t m e n t s may c o n s t i t u t e a meaningful area of c o n c e n t r a t i o n . T H E D O C U M E N T states that " r e q u i r e m e n t s s h o u l d be just as rigorous as t h o s e for a d e p a r t m e n t a l m a j o r , b u t tailored to the c o n c e p t of s o m e area o t h e r than a departmental area." G u i d e l i n e s spelled out in t h e p r o p o s a l i n c l u d e a m i n i m u m of 36 h o u r s of c o u r s e w o r k , half of which are to be selected f r o m u p p e r level c o u r s e s . T h e s e c o u r s e s w o u l d aim at a d e f i n e d area and would constitute the " c o m p o s i t e m a j o r . " T h e c o u r s e s would have to be g r o u p e d a r o u n d s o m e concept in an area of inquiry and not consist merely of a " c o l l e c t i o n " of c o u r s e s f r o m several d e p a r t m e n t s in a division. T H E B O A R D also stressed t h e i m p o r t a n c e of an early start toward c o m p l e t i o n of t h e c o m p o s i t e m a j o r . It d i r e c t e d those seeking this t y p e of c u r r i c u l u m to m a k e their request t o the " c o m p o s i t e m a j o r c o m m i t t e e " no later t h a n three s e m e s t e r s p r i o r to graduation. A c c o r d i n g to t h e d o c u m e n t , an advisor w o u l d t h e n be assigned to (he s t u d e n t to h e l p him design an acceptable curriculum. Those

A S S O C I A T E D E A N for Acad e m i c A f f a i r s J o h n Stewart expressed c o n c e r n that the c o m posite m a j o r s h o u l d not be used as an escape valve for a s t u d e n t ' s p r o b l e m s . He n o t e d that in recent years s o m e have s o u g h t a c o m posite m a j o r t o w a r d the end of their s e n i o r y e a r , leaving t h e m little t i m e f o r intensive s t u d y in t h e core of their c u r r i c u l u m . T h e B o a r d of T r u s t e e s will m e e t T h u r s d a y and F r i d a y of this week t o discuss a long list of issues n o w c o n f r o n t i n g the college. A M O N G T H E most i m p o r tant i t e m s on the agenda are the Build Hope development program and the presidential search. T h e Build H o p e p r o g r a m is a plan t o meet the college's dem a n d s for n e w facilities and academic improvements during the r e m a i n d e r of the I 9 7 0 ' s . It is divided i n t o t w o phases, f r o m 1972 to 1 9 7 7 and f r o m 1977 t o 1980. T h e main objectives of phase one include (he f u n d i n g and c o m p l e t i o n of the DeWitt Cultural C e n t e r , the p r o p o s e d acad e m i c science c e n t e r and a proposed physical e d u c a t i o n center. T e n t a t i v e plans for phase t w o involve the r e n o v a t i o n of V o o r h e e s Hall and a new wing for Van Z o e r e n L i b r a r y . T H E R E S U L T S of a feasibility s t u d y c o n d u c t e d by G. A. Brakeley and C o m p a n y of N e w Y o r k , a m a r k e t i n g research f i r m , will be p r e s e n t e d to t h e b o a r d this w e e k . T h e s t u d y will be evaluated by an ad hoc feasibility s t u d y c o m m i t t e e to d e t e r m i n e w h e t h e r the college is c a p a b l e of f u n d i n g t h e facilities and prog r a m s p r o j e c t e d by t h e Build H o p e p r o g r a m , and if so, t o det e r m i n e t h e most e f f e c t i v e met h o d f o r raising t h e m o n e y . The t r u s t e e s will be c o n s i d e r ing t h e Brakeley C o m p a n y ' s recommendations regarding the timing and main e m p h a s i s of the f u n d raising p r o g r a m necessit a t e d by t h e Build H o p e p l a n . T H E I N D E F I N I T E f u t u r e of the f e d e r a l g o v e r n m e n t ' s w a g e price policy may add an element of ambiguity to the b o a r d ' s financial p l a n n i n g , according t o C l a r e n c e H a n d l o g t e n , exe c u t i v e vice president of t h e college. He said that the i n t e n t of the g o v e r n m e n t ' s a n t i - i n f l a t i o n ary program appears to be
threatened by labor organizat i o n s ' p u r s u i t of their interests. The resultant uncertainty m a k e s financial p l a n n i n g m o r e d i f f i c u l t , he went on. "We just have t o a s s u m e that we're going t o be asked to be as conservative as possible regarding fee raises and so f o r t h , " he said. " T h e i n f o r m a t i o n on t h e governm e n t ' s f u t u r e policy is not s u f f i ciently clear for us to plan very definitely in a c c o r d a n c e with it." T H E B O A R D will also hear a report from (he Presidential Search Committee concerning t h e (wo presidenUal c a n d i d a t e s w h o recently visi(ed the c a m p u s . On the basis of the PSC's recommendations, the trustees h o p e t o c o m e (o a decision w h e t h e r to a p p o i n t o n e of t h e candidates. Several o t h e r issues are on the agenda for t h e T h u r s d a y and Friday meetings. T h e trustees will e x a m i n e the results of their recent decision to m a k e H a n d l o g t e n e x e c u t i v e vice presid e n t of the college and to place joint presidential a u t h o r i t y in the h a n d s of C h a n c e l l o r William V a n d e r l u g t and H a n d l o g t e n . T H E G E N E R A L state of t h e college regarding h o u s i n g , enrollm e n t , f i n a n c i n g and the physical plant will be e x a m i n e d by t h e b o a r d . R e p o r t s f r o m each of t h e five s t a n d i n g c o m m i t t e e s will also be h e a r d .

Fred Gaines: hard to peg by Kay H u b b a r d "Beware, I want to seduce your children. I want to capture t h e m . " Fred G a i n e s , c u r r e n t l y p l a y w r i g h t - i n - r e s i d e n c e at H o p e College, is d o i n g just what he w a r n s he w o u l d like t o d o - c a p turing the imaginations and energies of s t u d e n t s w h o c o m e into contact with him. P E R H A P S HE is so intriguing because it is d i f f i c u l t , if not impossible, t o peg h i m . His backg r o u n d i n c l u d e s a career as a f o o t b a l l p l a y e r on an a t h l e t i c s c h o l a r s h i p t o t h e University of N e b r a s k a , a t h r e e - y e a r stint with t h e Marine C o r p s , an u n d e r g r a d u a t e degree in English, and marriage t o a girl f r o m his h o m e t o w n - h a r d l y the e x p e c t e d criteria f o r a p l a y w r i g h t . In the eight years since his first play was p r o d u c e d , writing 3 5 - 4 0 plays (his e s t i m a t e ) has not been e n o u g h t o keep him b u s y . He also s p e n t several years as a s t u d e n t , several years as an a c t o r , and t h e last f o u r and a half years as a f u l l - t i m e f a r m e r in M i n n e s o t a . T H A T IS N O T to say t h a t F r e d G a i n e s d o e s n ' t take playwriting s e r i o u s l y . " T h e a t e r , " he says, "is probably the best m e a n s of r e v o l u t i o n a r y education. It's t h e m o s t m o b i l e , and it's o u t a n d out propaganda with e n t e r t a i n m e n t . " He c o n s i d e r s himself a " p o e t of the r e v o l u t i o n . " T h e i n t e n t i o n in all of his plays is t o expose "the egotism of m a n controlling other people." T h r o u g h this e x p o s u r e , G a i n e s tries t o " s t r i p a w a y t h e u n n e c e s sary, t o tear d o w n . " G A I N E S ' P L A Y S have o f t e n c r e a t e d s e n s a t i o n s as t h e a u d i e n ces r e a c t e d e m o t i o n a l l y to t h e t e a r i n g - d o w n process. D u r i n g a production of The Courtship p e o p l e a c t u a l l y t h r e w r o c k s at t h e actors.
