Ellen Kuzwayo is just such a person. Kuzwayo, who a r r i v e d at Hope on Sunday, will be giving a series of i n f o r m e d discussions with s t u d e n t s and faculty throughout the week. She plans to build an a w a r e n e s s of t h e a p a r t h e i d s y s t e m that e x i s t s in South Africa. Yet. K u z w a v o ' s central concern is with w o m e n ' s rights, e s p e c i a l l y in South A f r i c a ' s economic life. This l e a r n e d visitor is uniquely qualified to discuss such issues not only b e c a u s e she h a s lived in that land for seventy y e a r s , but also b e c a u s e she h a s been an a c t i v e p a r t i c i p a n t in its recent history. Mrs. K u z w a y o is the president of the Black C o n s u m e r Union in South A f r i c a , an organization which t r i e s to protect and improve the rights of women. This organization was originally f o r m e d by w o m e n , and it continues to s u r v e y such things a s costs, conditions and service in South A f r i c a . Kuzwayo also m a k e s her i r l p ^ known through books and IIIIILS. Her recently published book. Call
Me Women, first a p p e a r e d in July of this y e a r . But it was not until several m o n t h s later that it a p p e a r e d in ^ South A f r i c a n print. This is b e c a u s e her book is m o r e than an a u t o b i o g r a p h y , it is the historv of a whole people. It trulv tells whT IT IS L I K E TO BE BLACK IN S E G R E G A T E D J o h a n n e s b u r g ! h e r h o m e city). B e c a u s e of the n a t u r e of this book, she felt a certain 'nervousness' about having iot r e a d in her own nation. Yet her story has met with t r e m e n d o u s succ e s s and will soon a p p e a r in Germ a n print a s well. Mrs. Kuzwayo h a s also m a d e two films:Tsiamelo: A Place of Goodness and Awake from Morning which will be shown s e v e r a l t i m e s this week. A f t e r her stay at Hope, Kuzwayo will travel to Michigan State and then on to the University of Michigan, w h e r e she will give the keynote speech at a lecture focusing on black w o m e n authors. It would be well worth the effort to a t t e n d any of Mrs. K u z w a y o ' s scheduled meetings. And for those wishing to see her films, both will be shown W e d n e s d a y 23 at 7:30 p . m . and T h u r s d a y 24 at 7:30 p.m.

Last F r i d a y , October 18th it w a s a n n o u n c e d that the new library would be n a m e d the Gordon J . and M a r g a r e t D. Van Wylen L i b r a r y . The new library is one of th p r o j e c t s in to C a m p a i g n for H o p e which h a s a l r e a d y r a i s e d $20 million of the $26 million goal. The l i b r a r y ' s p r o j e c t e d completion date is s o m e t i m e in D e c e m b e r of 1986. It h a s been n a m e d inhonor of our c u r r e n t p r e s i d e n t and his wife for all they h a v e done for Hope College. Dr. Van Wylen is the 9th president of Hope a n d he and his wife h a v e been guiding the college since 1972. Board of T r u s t e e s C h a i r m a n Victor W. E i m i c k e said "With d e t e r m i n a t i o n and vision, the m a j o r purpose of President and Mrs. Van Wylen h a s a l w a y s been to provide an excellent liberal a r t s education for the Hope s t u d e n t . They h a v e s t r e n g t h e n e d Hope's position a s one of the o u t s t a n d i n g Christian liberal a r t s colleges in the nation." Dr. Van Wylen b e c a m e president h e r e a f t e r a postion as Dean of the College of E n g i n e e r i n g at the University of Michigan. Since he c a m e to Hope he has m a d e g r e a t e f f o r t s to i m p r o v e the quality of our education. He is c r e d i t e d with e x p a n d i n g the curriculum of Hope to include comp u t e r science, special education, health d y n a m i c s , nursing, pree n g i n e e r i n g . and dance. With Dr. Van Wylen's leadership. Hope College h a s m a n a g e d to achieve stable enrollments, m a i n t a i n an u n b l e m i s h e d r e c o r d of n e a r l y two d e c a d e s of balanced b u d g e t s (too bad the country c a n ' t ) and u n d e r t a k e nearly $20 million in c a m p u s improvements.
Mrs. Van Wylen has com plimented the s e r v i c e of her husb a n d through her work on behalf of the college,in the c o m m u n i t y and for the church. She ha.s served a s a role model for m a n y Hope women over the y e a r s , showing t h a t a m o t h e r can continue her education and p u r s u e a c a r e e r . In 1974. a f t e r raising a f a m i l y of six children, she r e s u m e d her educaiton t o w a r d a d o c t o r a t e in p s y c h i a t r y f r o m Michigan S t a t e University. She w a s recognized for these e f f o r t s in 1980 by being n a m e d Michigan Mother of the Year. In t r i b u t e to the Van Wylen's l e a d e r s h i p to the Hope College f a c u l t y a n d s t a f f of 1982 established a scholarship fund in their n a m e . At the p r e s s c o n f e r e n c e . Dr. and Mrs. Van Wylen w e r e asked to e x p r e s s their feelings about being honored this way. Dr. Van Wylen w a s quite, a s one might expect, dignified, f o r m a l and apparently s p e e c h l e s s as he talked less than I've e v e r known him to before. He w a s gracious in his r e m a r k s , and thinks of it m o r e as honoring the college faculty and staff that he h a s worked with a s m u c h a s himself and his wife. Mrs. Van Wylen w a s obviously quite elated to think t h a t the faculty had actually done this. It was s o m e t h i n g that she didn't really expect she said, and w a s o v e r w h e l m e d by it. She w a s p e r h a p s even a little emotional about the a n n o u n c e m e n t , but most people t h a t a r e even at all f a m i l i a r with w h a t she h a s done, know that she d e s e r v e s it. Construction on the Van Wylen is scheduled to het'in next s p r i n g . ( oiiiiniii-d mi Pnjit* (t
