L a s t week, the a n c h o r e n d o r s e d t h e P r e s i d e n t i a l c a n d i d a c y of Richard Nixon. The reasoning behind the choice w a s c o m p l e x , accordi n g to the e d i t o r i a l . C o m p l e x it m a y h a v e b e e n , b u t r a t i o n a l it w a s not. T h e p o i n t s listed a s a d m i t t e d l y w o r k i n g a g a i n s t Mr. N i x o n i n c l u d e d m o s t of the m a j o r critical i s s u e s of o u r time. T h e a r g u m e n t s put f o r t h a g a i n s t h i m in t h e o p e n i n g p a r a g r a p h s w e r e far more persuasive than those l a t e r p r e s e n t e d in his f a v o r .

S e c o n d l y , t h a t Mr. H u m p h r e y is not g o i n g to let a n y g r a s s g r o w u n d e r his feet in a s s e r t i n g t h a t he, a n d not Mr. J o h n s o n , is n o w r u n n i n g the D e m o c r a t i c P a r t y — a n d , if a n d w h e n he is elected, the g o v e r n m e n t , t o o — i s e v i d e n t f r o m the r a p i d o u s t e r of D e m o c r a t i c P a r t y C h a i r m a n J o h n Bailey v O N T H E S U B J E C T of the Vie t n a m W a r , Mr. N i x o n is a c t u a l l y f a r c l o s e r to t h e J o h n s o n p o s i t i o n t h a n is Mr. H u m p h r e y . T H R O U G H C A R E F U L research and e x t r a o r d i n a r y luck, I m a n a g e d to l o c a t e him the o t h e r d a y . His n a m e is K e e n a n R u t l e d g e a n d he n o w w o r k s f o r a n a u t o mobile c o m p a n y recalling faulty steering wheels.

At first K e e n a n w a s r e l u c t a n t to d i s c u s s the r o l e he p l a y e d in V i e t n a m , b u t after p l y i n g h i m with d r i n k s he o p e n e d u p . Let it not b e said t h a t this is inconsideration; rather let it be called conscious s a d i s m .

Of c o u r s e you a r e n o t s u p p o s e d to join a sorority or a fraternity.

If y o u d o , it's y o u r o w n f a u l t , and being that y o u a r e exist e n t i a l l y b o u n d , y o u get n a i l e d to the wall b y the g r e a t e r p o w e r s . S o if y o u live in a d o r m i t o r y y o u ' v e g o t to h e l p with h o u s e decs a n d if instead y o u realize w h y y o u ' r e here and study, y o u ' r e impotent, a social f l u n k i e a n d g e n e r a l l y ostracized.

S o the h o u s e d e c s a n d other f l o t s a m left o n the c a m p u s d o n ' t h a v e t o be w o r k s of a r t , b u t somew h e r e we were told t h a t if we a r e to d o a j o b at all, we a r e to d o it r i g h t o r t h e r e ' s n o point in d o i n g it. T h e r e f o r e it e n d s up,, a s m o s t t h i n g s d o , in the h a n d s of a few r e s p o n s i b l e p e o p l e w h o get their h a n d s c h o p p e d off f o r f a i l u r e , a n d o b s c u r i t y f o r success.

B U T IT IS a s the a l u m n i w a n d e r b a c k to c a m p u s , y a w n , n o d a n d realize H o m e c o m i n g wouldn't b e the s a m e w i t h o u t the flapt e d o o d l e of j u n k i n d i s c r i m i n a t e l y s p r a w l e d a r o u n d . L i k e l y they rem e m b e r the h o u r s t h e y wasted a n d regret it t o o m u c h to d e n y a n o t h e r the p r i v i l e g e of continuation.

W o r s e even a r e the f o l i a t i o n tactics which c l a n d e s t i n e l y p o p u p a r o u n d c a m p u s . One minute y o u ' r e on y o u r w a y t o f o u r t h h o u r merrily bouncing through the p i n e y - l o o k i n g pine g r o v e a n d a wee bit later o n the w a y b a c k the place l o o k s like the j u n g l e s of V i e t n a m c o m p l e t e with forests, r o c k s a n d r i v e r s . With f a i t h a m a n c a n m o v e m o u n t a i n s s o why s h o u l d n ' t a few trees c o m e to life h e r e a n d t h e r e ? T h i n k of the surprise next week w h e n the stuff is either d e a d o r g o n e .

T H E N T H E R E WAS a special event this y e a r , the s y m b o l i c init i a t i o n of the S C S C b u i l d i n g . A m e a n i n g f u l h o l e w a s d u g in a f a r c o r n e r of K o l l e n field S a t u r d a y and a t h o u s a n d people nodded a p p r o v a l . S u n d a y it w a s symb o l i c a l l y filled in b y a few a n g r y football players k i c k i n g dirt a r o u n d . So m u c h f o r the S C S C project; it w a s a g o o d idea a n d since i d e a s l a s t l o n g e r t h a n physical o b j e c t s it m a y r e m a i n worthwhile in a b s t r a c t i o n .

Best of all is the w e l c o m e to God-fearing omnipotent alumni.

If t h e r e is a n y s i n c e r i t y at all in the t e r m s " C h r i s t i a n " a n d " c o m m u n i t y " which a r e u s e d to describe H o p e College, then students and a d m i n i s t r a t o r s alike must strive to live u p to t h o s e labels.

White p e o p l e h a v e . T h i s is w h y I h a v e c h o s e n to write a b o u t the white p r o b l e m in A m e r ica.

B L A C K P E O P L E live in a society in w h i c h to be " A m e r i c a n " is to be w h i t e , a n d to be b l a c k is a m i s f o r t u n e . White p e o p l e m u s t b e g i n to realize t h a t b l a c k p e o p l e n o l o n g e r accept the idea t h a t t h e y a r e s e c o n d c l a s s citizens. E v e n t h o u g h t h e y live in a society w h e r e o p p r e s s i o n is practiced e v e r y d a y they a r e b e g i n n i n g t o f i n d out w h o they r e a l l y are.

W h y a r e b l a c k s o p p r e s s e d ? It is not b e c a u s e t h e y a r e p o o r , or because blacks are uneducated.

Black people are oppressed s i m p l y b e c a u s e they a r e b l a c k .

T h e c o l o r of their skin a u t o m a t i c a l l y p u t s them in a c e r t a i n c l a s s , the lowest c l a s s , a n d b e c a u s e of their c o l o r the b l a c k p e o p l e a r e s u p p o s e d to s t a y in their " p l a c e . " T H E W H I T E MAN'S attitudes t o w a r d the b l a c k race, which dev e l o p e d out of his i g n o r a n c e , h a v e b r o u g h t this c o u n t r y to the p l a c e it is t o d a y . H i s i g n o r a n c e h a s led him to believe t h a t he r e a l l y is better t h a n the b l a c k m a n . H i s i g n o r a n c e h a s led him to believe t h a t a b l a c k h u m a n b e i n g is q u i t e different f r o m h i m . T h i s g a p will n e v e r beg i n to b e closed if the white c o m m u n i t i e s r e f u s e to c h a n g e their att i t u d e s which h o l d that, " A l l of them colored people sure got rhyt h m " or " B o y t h o s e p e o p l e a r e really lazy."

T H E BLACK MAN no longer a c c e p t s himself on the white m a n ' s t e r m s . H e is b e g i n n i n g to b e h i s o w n m a n , a n d c o n t r o l his o w n destinies. "Black p e o p l e t o d a y a r e o n the m o v e f o r their l i b e r a t i o n .

T h e y a r e tired of t r y i n g to p r o v e t h i n g s to white people. T h e y a r e tired of e x p l a i n i n g to white p e o p l e t h a t all b l a c k s a r e n o t v i o l e n t .

T h e b l a c k p e r s o n is c o n c e r n e d with getting the t h i n g s he n e e d s t o live. T h e q u e s t i o n is if white p e o p l e will a l l o w this to h a p p e n in t h i s country.

M e d g e r E v e r s w a s n o t killed b y a black m a n . The three black men w h o were m u r d e r e d in D e t r o i t ' s A l g i e r s tMotel w e r e n o t s h o t d o w n b y b l a c k c o p s . Yes, we need order—white order.

It is h a r d , if n o t i m p o s s i b l e , f o r white people, a s well a s t h o s e black people w h o w a n t t o b e w h i t e , to u n d e r s t a n d the White P r o b l e m in A m e r i c a . H o w e v e r , white America m u s t t r y to u n d e r s t a n d a n d c o m e to t e r m s with this new b l a c k m e n t a l i t y . B l a c k p e o p l e a r e bitter a n d are g r o w i n g impatient. Whatever the c o n s e q u e n c e s , there is a r a p i d l y g r o w i n g b o d y of b l a c k s determined to "T.C.B."—take c a r e of b u s i n e s s .
