The country has bountiful natural resources such as gold, food and c r a f t work, but only the white minority seems to prosper. Blanchard delivered her r e m a r k s on today. Oct. 25 at a luncheon for a p p r o x i m a t e l y 100 c o m m u n i t y m e m b e r s , Hope faculty and staff. The luncheon enabled the s c h o l a r s h i p ' s organizers to outline the new prog r a m , e n t i t l e d the NonTraditional Wo m e n ' s Scholarship F u n d .

Blanchard was herself a nontraditional college student. She earned a bachelor of a r t s d e g r e e from Western Michigan University in D e c e m b e r , 20 y e a r s a f t e r completing high school and while m a n a g i n g a full-time, d e m a n ding c a r e e r Blanchard is c u r r e n t l y ex ecutive assistant to the director of the Governor's Cabinet Coun cil on Human I n v e stm e n t. Strategic planning groups look to the future

by Mpine Qakisa news co-editor The 12 task forces that a r e involved in " H o p e in the F u t u r e , " the s t r a t e g i c planning process that began in M a r c h , h a d their final m e e t i n g on T h u r s d a y , October 6 during the a n n u a l fall m e e t i n g of the Board of T r u s t e e s .

According to Hope College P r e s i d e n t John Jacobson, the different groups will s u b m i t their r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s by Nov. 1, to be reviewed by the steering committee consisting of the Executive C o m m i t t e e of the Board of T r u s t e e s and four elected faculty m e m b e r s .

Whether the scholarship is end o w e d or s i m p l y f i n a n c e d through annual fund raising efforts. however, Hooyman said that the current goal is to h a v e the scholarship in place in time for the 1990-91 a c a d e m i c y e a r .

Much of the inspiration for the Non-Traditional Women's Scholarship F u n d c o m e s f r o m 1988 Hope g r a d u a t e Linn Gann, who worked with Hooyman to s t a r t the scholarship. G a n n ' s u n d e r g r a d u a t e college c a r e e r spanned nearly 20 y e a r s - a n d while pursuing her d e g r e e she worked and raised three children a s a single p a r e n t .

Despite the challenges, Gann g r a d u a t e d f r o m Hope " c u m l a u d e " in 1988. She is c u r r e n t l y in the m a n a g e m e n t training pro-

g r a m at F M B - F i r s t Michigan Bank and attending g r a d u a t e classes in organizational com rnunication at Western Michigan University.

Gann was n a m e d Michigan's winner in the 1989 Student Aid Success Stories Competition s p o n s o r e d by t h e N a i t o n u l Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators "I found thai there a r e a lot of financial p r e s s u r e s t h a t a single parent or older student has that other students d o n ' t - a n d that there's a n e e d , " Gann said. "I had a couple of friends that had to drop our of school because they couldn't meet their expenses " Gann noted that the college's financial aid office provides a good financial support system, but that s o m e t i m e s the ony a w a r d s a v a i l a b l e to students a r e loans. The scholarship, she believes, will relieve the struggling non-traditional s t u d e n t s of s o m e additional load debt. " I t ' s a bonus to the college's a l r e a d y good financial aid s y s t e m , " G a n n said. "Hopefully there a r e m a n y people who will benefit f r o m this scholarship fund."

" T h e steering c o m m i t t e e has the responsibility of integrating r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s into a final report to be f o r w a r d e d to the Board of T r u s t e e s e a r l y next y e a r , " Jacobson said.

Jacobson said that the " H o p e in the F u t u r e " project is a planning effort of the college to set directions for the coming d e c a d e .

Jacobson said the planning will a d d r e s s 12 different m a j o r topics including the i m p r o v e m e n t and t h e s t r e n g t h e n i n g of t h e a c a d e m i c s now a n d in the f u t u r e , the r e c r u i t m e n t a n d develop ment of the faculty, the size and the composition of the student body, multicultural p r e s e n c e a n d learning, the relationships with the R e f o r m e d Church in A m e r i c a and the quality of student life beyond the c l a s s r o o m . F o r each topic, there will be eight to 12 people involved in the planning. " T h e different g r o u p s . " he said, " e n a b l e us to focus our attention on a small n u m b e r of issues that will be critical to the f u t u r e of the college."

by Greta Kennedy staff writer Hope College has a group of students who work a s a governing body making decisions that will affect our college-centered lives. Hope's Student Congress is l o c a t e d in D e W i t t C u l t u r a l Center, and the leaders of the organization say they a r e very open to new ideas, questions and comments f r o m Hope students.

To learn how they could improve personally, two of the leaders, Jonathan Hoffman, president, and Brad Votava, vice president, attended the 11th Annual National Leadership Conference on Student Government.

The conference w a s held a t the Stouffer Concourse Hotel, Oct. 12-15 in St. Louis, Mo. The conf e r e n c e a t t r a c t e d about 700 s t u d e n t s f r o m 65 d i f f e r e n t schools, with student government budgets ranging from $100 to $1,000,000.

The biggest reason for attending this conference, according to both Hoffman and Votava, was to find ways in which they could improve a s leaders. They also hoped to bring back new insights that could benefit the entire student body.

Student teachers meeting today All education students who a r e planning to student teach during the fall of 1990 or the spring of 1991 must attend an informational meeting today, Oct. 25, at 4 p.m. in Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall.

This way, they could be open to new ideas that might improve the way Student Congress runs. Hoffm a n felt that, a s a whole, Hope's Student C o n g r e s s " h a s no cavities and no weaknesses."

He went on to say that judging Hope on a scale of one to 10 against other schools attending the conference, Hope ranked a n i n e b e c a u s e " n o t h i n g is perfect."

Some of the ideas for change focus mainly on Hope's constitution. H o f f m a n plans to add specifics that a r e not presently outlined concerning elections and other a r e a s . He also hopes to add a preamble to the constitution to more clearly define to purpose and goals of Student Congress and to add continuity. To get id e a s on m a k i n g these c h a n g e s , he c o l l e c t e d the preambles from other schools' constitutions.

Dr. Richard Crisman from the University of Chicago will give an address on " T h e American Crises in Vocation: How We Got J i m m y Swaggart, Dan Quayle, and P e t e Rose," Thursday, Oct. 26, at 3:30 p.m. in Lubbers Loft.

Most of Nancy Taylor's poems a r e n a r r a t i v e (basically with a story line), visual and over onehalf of a page long. They a r e various subjects, including the

color purple, sculpture, travel and being in a wheelchair. They a r e written in a variety of moods.

Some a r e joyful, sad, humorous, solemn, etc.

Taylor s p e n d s hours upon hours writing, rewriting, editing and polishing one poem. Most of her poems a r e single poems, but she does have one series containing f i v e s h o r t poems about women in wheelchairs. She is currently working on a poem a b o u t h e r t r a v e l s in N e w Zealand.

Taylor has been very successful in the a r t of writing p o e t r y . Along with h e r six published poems outside of Hope College and the country, she also had about six to eight poems published in " O p u s " when she was a student in her poetry class.

Scientific literacy a major concern

by Beth Pechta co-editor The 300th anniversary celebration of the United States Constitution may not be one that is very happy, said Dr. Jon D. Miller, professor of political science and director of the Public Opinion Laboratory at Northern Illinois University, in a lecture at Hope last Thursday, Oct. 19.

Miller is worried that the current high level of scientific illiteracy in the U.S. will impair this country's democratic system.

According to Miller's research, only 5.6 percent of the people in t h e U.S. a r e s c i e n t i f i c a l l y literate.

This means that 94.4 percent of the people of the U.S. do not know enough basic v o c a b u l a r y of science to read and understand science reports in newspapers or p o p u l a r m a g a z i n e s . It a l s o m e a n s that nearly all of the people in the U.S. do not have an understanding of the difference between science and o t h e r 4 ' w a y s of knowing," for i n s U n c e the dif-

ference beween astronomy and astrology. Additionally, an overwhelming m a j o r i t y do not have an understanding of the impact of science and technology on society.

More specifically, Miller noted that 20 percent of Americans think that the earth revolves around the sun once a day. A full 37 percent think that h u m a n s and dinosaurs lived at the s a m e time (a phenomenon Miller jokingly attributes to the F r e d Flinstone cartoon show). Only 22 percent could give an ''open-ended" definition of DNA, with some answering that it was a toxic chemical and others stating that it had something to do with the Dow Jones Stock Exchange.

These statistics concern Miller, who feels t h a t U.S. democracy will suffer because of the increasing n u m b e r of public policy issues that deal with science.

Over the last 200 y e a r s of U.S. constitutional history. Miller stated, there h a v e been "national questions that were important, but you didn't have to have much

education to be a good citizen."

Today, Miller continued, the people of the U.S. a r e having to decide public policy issues on such topics as nuclear power, an intelligent decision on which requires knowledge of physics and chemistry. " T h e y ' r e not the s a m e kinds of issues a s being for or agains' slavery or for or against collec tive b a r g a i n i n g , " Miller said.

"Students will be effectively disenfranchised, just as if you had taken their voter card away from t h e m . " Of college g r a d u a t e s . Miller's study concluded that only 17 percent w e r e scientifically literate.

By m a j o r s , the percentage of scientific literacy was highest in science or applied science majors (27 percent) and lowest in education m a j o r s (10 percent).

Over the past 10 years, the scientific literacy r a t e in the U.S. has shown no improvement.

Yet, "Over the course of the next 50 years, society is going to have to decide a fair number of important and critical issues," said Miller. "And we need to m a k e the right decisions the first time.".

Miller said that one method of solving the problem of scientific illiteracy is to "convince yourself that science and math a r e available to everybody." Miller stated that every young person should be given a copy of the book " T h e Little Engine That Could."

"If we a r e going to be able to resolve scientific disputes, we must have a scientifically literate society," Miller concluded.

Women in Africa topic of conference

by Jo nathan Quirk guest writer Hope College professors, and Hope's visiting Fulbright scholar, Dr. Mansah P r a h f r o m Ghana, spoke at the recent GLCA Women's/African Studies Conference held a t Denison University on October 13-14.

J a n e Dickie of the Psychology Department discussed the impact of grass-roots feminism on the anti-apartheid m o v e m e n t in South Africa. Neal Sobania of International Education discussed bis recent research on the history of Kenya and the book that evolved out of it. P r a h w a s a keynote speaker of the conference, sharing her perceptions on "Women, Power a n d Culture in A f r i c a . " Dickie presented film slides f r o m her sabbatical last y e a r in

South Africa, and discussed her perceptions of that country. In her presentation she showed the people of South Africa, white and black, ranging f r o m simple commonfolk to c h a r i s m a t i c leaders like Allan Boesak and Desmond Tutu.

Dickie stressed the importance of hope in the anti-apartheid struggle, and the value of South African feminists, church leaders, and even children.

Sobania discussed his involvement with Kenyan historians in writing his book, expressing the effort m a d e to compose a book written f r o m a Kenyan, not Western, point of view.

Sobania stressed the value of totality in interpreting Kenyan history, that is, defining Kenya through the experiences of the

Kenyan people, not through the British influence.

P r a h , a sociology professor, referring to herself as a "spider in a w e b , " r e m a r k e d on African research in her keynote address.

P r a h criticized the metropoles strategy of African research, and stressed the need for a study of Africa in Africa Noting that the latest research on Africa is not available there, she stated the need for the end of " t h e basic contradiction between research a n d a c t i o n . " She also commented on the fact that "nowhere in Africa do women wield power directly."

The reasons for this situation, she explained, 4,are the stratification of society and the i m m e n s e responsibilities African women f a c e . "

Bennett urges TV antidrug fight (AP) -- Drug Czar William Bennett is urging TV industry leaders to get m o r e involved in the fight against drug abuse. More News McDowell speaks on sex and God's plan

by J i m Monnett co-editor Christian speaker Josh McDowell addressed the issue of teenage sex during the P e t r a concert last Thursday in Welch Auditorium, Grand Rapids,to an audience of mostly high school youth groups.

Through a contrast of humor and frightening statistics, McDowell talked about why people should wait for m a r r i a g e before having sex.

McDowell a r g u e d that the mind is the body's most powerful sex organ which leads people to sexual immorality a lot faste r than any more traditional organs. He said the mind stores sensory memories biochemically as though they a r e very important memories.

For example, McDowell asked a girl in the front to think of an instant when she had been insulted last y e a r .

She could do that easier than she could r e m e m b e r what s h e had for b r e a k f a s t . The sensory imprint of the insult had lasted longer.

He said pornography lasts the s a m e way in the mind. The problem is that once m a l e looks a t a female, those pornographic images pop up a n d pollute his view of her.

McDowell told the story of a 32-year-old Christian who broke into t e a r s talking to McDowell recently. The m a n w a s shattered by guilt even though he had been faithful to his wife for nine years.

E v e r y time he slept with his wife he r e m e m b e r e d past p a r t n e r s and it was ruining his m a r r i a g e bed. " G u y s don't forget. It's all right u p here in the most powerful s e x o r g a n : t h e m i n d / ' McDowell said.

Other reasons for remaining a virgin or abstaining until m a r r i a g e that McDowell t a l k e d about concerned Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).

"God says 'Wait because I want to protect you f r o m sexually t r a n s m i t t e d d i s e a s e s , " McDowell said. "God wants to give you peace of mind.''

With all the STDs around, abstinence leads to peace of mind. Every time one has sex one is having sex with all their past partners.

In t o d a y ' s statistical world, that is about 13,000 people, McDowell said.

Addressing the women in the crowd, McDowell pointed out why often STDs a r e ignored; men usually don't show the symptoms and STDs a r e seldom passed girl to guy, but they a r e passed guy to girl nearly all the time. ' 4 My dog c a n h a v e s e x , " McDowell said. "Does sex m a k e a man out of my dog? Any kid can have sex, but it ta k e s a m a n to be a f a t h e r . " In the end, McDowell said the b e s t r e a s o n f o r w a i t i n g is "Because God's plan is b e s t . " McDowell concluded his speech with a call against sexual immorality. F i r s t he asked all the youth leaders to stand up if they were willing to say, "By God's g r a c e I purpose not to defile myself." Then he had all ^he males in the audience who were willing to m a k e the commitment to stand up also. When < he girls in the audience applaud••d at the number of males who stood up, McDowell said that w a s a sign that girls like the boys to wait too. Finally he had the females stand up if they pledge too. by Mpine Qakisa news editor The Children's After School Achievement (CASA) program at Hope College is designed to enhance educational goals and aspirations of limited-income-atrisk youth and decrease the dropout rate that exists among the Hispanic and other minority students The CASA program is an a f t e r school e l e m e n t a r y p r o g r a m designed to meet the education and cultural needs of children from first through sixth grade, "who are economically, socially or culturally at risk of dropping out of school before completing high school," according to John Heydens, the program coordinator Heydens said that 30 out of 50 students from St. Frances de Sales, Lincoln, Longfellow, Van Raalte, Washington and E E Fell have already signed up for the program. Each student attends the program two days per week.

Duke bans freshpersons from parties where alcohol is served (CPS) - In what m a y h a v e been the most restrictive f r e s h p e r s o n orientation conducted on any m a jor s e c u l a r c a m p u s in the country this fall, Duke Univerisy in North Carolina banned incoming f r e s h p e r s o n s f r o m going to certain p a r t i e s during the first 17 d a y s of school.

Under the new rules, f r e s h p e r sons w e r e b a r r e d f r o m f r a t e r n i ty, sorority or informal d o r m or a p a r t m e n t parties at which alcohol w a s served.

Pull representative denies sexism Dear editors, In response to L a u r a Huntington Wyss' viewpoints (i.e. accusations) about Pull and Nykerk: As f a r a s I c a n tell, you h a v e never been involved with either of these events. How can a person m a k e j u d g e m e n t s a n d accusations about something they truly h a v e never experienced? I think it is t i m e that you stopped sitting back and passively making j u d g e m e n t s a n d discovered how these two s e p a r a t e traditions a r e so i m p o r t a n t .

You m a y feel Nykerk is sexist because it w a s c r e a t e d a s a counterpart to Pull, but in the 54 y e a r s it has been around, it has developed into its own entity. It is not just for women, it is not just singing, sitting and looking pret-

ty. Nykerk is all about a feeling, the Nykerk Spirit that builds up inside a n d c u l m i n a t e s on one n i g h t - b u t you would not know about that a s p e c t . You a r e too busy analyzing the amount of strength it t a k e s to pull a rope and the a m o u n t of e n d u r a n c e it takes to sing, speak and act.

As for Pull, it m a y be the men who actually reel in the rope, but the women worked just as h a r d being the eyes and e a r s of the men a n d keeping t h e m going for three hours. I'll tell you f r o m personal e x p e r i e n c e that the t h r e e weeks that lead u p to Pull a n d the entire t h r e e hours on Pull day a r e just a s tough on the girls a s it is on the guys; just in different physical ways.

To c h a n g e these two competitions a n d c r e a t e their identical c o u n t e r p a r t s would not solve

anything, it would only s e p a r a t e m e n a n d women m o r e . T h e s e traditions, a s they s t a n d , try to integrate m e n and w o m e n . Men need w o m e n for Pull a n d w o m e n need m e n for N y k e r k - t h e y a r e each o t h e r ' s support. Both competitions r e q u i r e desire, commitment and s t a m i n a .

Stop analyzing who does w h a t and if it's physically a n d mentally equal, look at the m e a n i n g s and bonds c r e a t e d behind e a c h s e p a r a t e tradition. The feeling of a c c o m p l i s h m e n t a n d pride which occurs in e a c h tradition f a r surpasses any negative a s p e c t t h a t you can c r e a t e .

Forensics hosts high school debate Dear Editors, On October 23, the Holland Area High School D e b a t e League held its first round of competition in a series of debates which will be r e s u m e d on Oct. 30, Nov. 7 and Nov. 14, beginning at 3:30 p.m. and concluding by 7 p.m. on each of those days. This event is being hosted by the Hope College Forensics Association.

The Holland Area High School Debate League consists of nine high schools in the west Michigan a r e a , including Holton, Mona Shores, Muskegon ReethsPuffer, Holland, West Ottawa, Holland C h r i s t i a n , H a m i l t o n , Unity Christian (of Hudsonville), and Grandville. F o r the competi-

tion, each school will have two t e a m s , a varsity and a junior varsity, each consisting of four people, two a r g u i n g for the debate resolution and two arguing a g a i n s t it. in the course of the competition, e v e r y school will meet e v e r y other one on both sides of the topic.

Puncturing the bubble

Scon KAUKONEN For those who have been dead to the world or simply stuck within the bubble of Hope CoUege since returning from fall break. I thought I'd bring you up-to-date (with relevant c o m m e n t a r y ) on stuff h a p p e n i n g a c r o s s our planet. People consistently complain of not knowing what is happening beyond Hope's c a m p u s and since our house has cable TV including CNN and the Home Shopping Network as well a s an occasional newspaper of the big city variety lying around, I thought I'd take it upon myself to provide this service.

The obvious headline is. of course. Zsa Zsa Gabor. She recently fired her lawyer and his replacement slapped a gag on

her (figuratively s p e a k i n g perhaps he should literally). In r e a l i t y , this is the obvious headline only to Zsa Zsa and perhaps Leona Helmsley who would be upset that she w a s not the ' obvious headline."

The true lead story is (SURP R I S E ) the earthquake in San Francisco. Unless you have been literally dead for the past week, very little m o r e r e m a i n s to be said. I must however commend the geologist f r o m Columbia University for his outstanding contribution to live network news. Looking as though he'd done a little too much acid in the 1960*8, in the midst of a c a r e f u l explanation of the location of the epicenter to Dan Rather and a

Wasting weather

JIM MONNETT It s fall a g a i n a n d w e ' v e already had our first snowfall Some poor souls have started to talk about the beginning of ski season It sends shivers up. down, and diagonally across my spine. Not shivers of excitement, but the shivers reminiscent of exceptional dry heaves.

My problem is a simple one: I hate snow.

It's not a passive hate. It's not even a rational hate. It's irrational, dirty, festering, repulsive and truely beneath me.

"So w h a t ? " you m u t t e r as you pause to wish for snow to come sooner so that you can slalom to your h e a r t ' s content.

Well, hating an entire season can take a lot out of a person.

Since winter lasts about ten months out of the y e a r , it would seem to be a good m o v e to enjoy the

fall before the snow comes h e r e with blietzkrieg intensity.

Instead of going outside and e n j o y i n g the w o n d e r f u l fall weather I worked at papers all last weekend. On Saturday the weather was gorgeous. The sun shined down, filling hearts with love and hope for humanity. The air was chilly in that crisp fall way that m a k e s you think of hot apple cider and a hay ride through the colorful trees.

The extent of the outdoors that I enjoyed, over the weekend, I stole during pauses between sections of a paper. After finishing a particularly satisfying p a r a g r a p h on the ramifications of some stunning theory about urban interrelationships, I would look up f r o m my screen and gaze out the window a t the tan back of Meyer Cottage. Seeing my in-

nation of concerned viewers, he paused, belched (it w a s a good one), and went on without missing a beat nor saying, " E x c u s e m e . " Truly, a class performance.

It s e e m s t h e D e m o c r a t i c mayor of San F r a n s i s c o and the Bush administration were mix ing words regarding each other s actions following the earthquake.

Nice to see that s o m e politicians can l e a v e p a r t i s a n p o l i t i c s behind on occasion for the good of h u m a n i t y . Too b a d these weren't the ones.

J a n e Pauley is fighting to maintain her role as the leading female on NBC's TODAY show.

Evidently, some people think that a younger, better looking D e b o r a h N o r v i l l e will soon replace Pauley or at least steal some of the stardust. Which one is the s t a r is not a concern to m e because I ' m not getting up early if I have to listen to Willard Scott announce the 97th birthday of Ms. F i o n a P a l u s h a s k i f r o m Shadow Springs, Idaho, anyway.

Things a r e changing so fast in eastern Europe that by the time you read this (three days f r o m now) it'll have been superceded by more reforms, m o r e " f o r the first time in over forty y e a r s " , and m o r e puzzled looks f r o m the West. It certainly has created an interesting situation for Western g o v e r n m e n t s w h o m u s t now cautiously reevaluate their roles.

So what do I do'' Do I p r e p a r e for the snow by spending every waking moment outside while I still can without worrying about frost bite and slipping down the stairs outside of Phelps?

Of course not. I spend these dandy days writing plentiful papers and reading engrossing textbooks on the evolution of the courageous comma.

Should I blow it all off? Would you? Do you? Do you get up on a Saturday morning and say to yourself, "Self, let's go out and enjoy the day. The homework will still be here for us to enjoy later. But for now let's go out and live today like it could be our last"?

Of course, the knee-jerk reaction is to j u m p right in and try to pull the reforms along, but that can have grave consequences if the reforms then fail. It is proving to be a frustrating period of time, I'm sure, for the West, anxious to see the reforms work and at the s a m e time, having to exercise caution.

The new leader of the South African government has provided a glimmer of hope with the release of eight jailed activists.

How sincere he is of r e f o r m remains to be seen. Now the antia p a r t h e i d f o r c e s in S o u t h Africa must a d j u s t their perspective to not only r e m a i n critical of the government, but to p r e p a r e to work with that government towards creating r e f o r m .

One aspect of the news that people often miss a t coUege is the weather reports. Don't you j u s t love Holland w e a t h e r ?

It leaves m e on a Saturday night wishing for a weekend to relax. But now a s I look out my window at Mr. Squirrel chewing on a nut and really enjoying it. After Thanksgiving break she was immediately talking about how much she was looking f o r w a r d to Christmas break. In her next breath she told m e how boring Hope w as Of course, it's boring if you spend even* day focused on a future break when you get to travel away from home.

After listening to her often enough 1 promised myself that I would continue to live each day one day at a time.

Sounds " s m a l t z y " (as our faculty advisor would say) doesn't it 0 But what's wrong with t h a t 0 I should t a k e an hour out of my day and enjoy the good fail weather that I like. Since I'm not fond of winter, then maybe I'll study then. And if you're a skier or just a winter-lover you can get counseling...a...no, sorry let me try again. If you like winter, work hard now so you'll be a bit ahead to enjoy it in December (wishful thinking).

" I t ' s wonderful because it's every time different...after the performance we like to play chess " Those not present at F r i d a y ' s performance missed a r a r e opportunity to see two combined musical geniuses t o g e t h e r - t h e Vienna Chamber Philharmonic and Nigel Kennedy. Both groups a r e available on compact disc, however, and a new recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons performed by Kennedy is being released in the United States s o m e t i m e this week.

Cast is key for 'Look Who's Talking" \

by Bill Meengs sports editor "Look Who's Talking" is one of those movies that takes a fairly simple idea and m a k e s it work because of the cast. This movie, which is generally, very good, could very easily have turned into a dog, had the wrong cast been used. But, thankfully for the film and viewer alike, the cast of Kirstie Alley, John Travolta and especially Bruce Willis as the voice of Mikey work g r e a t together.

The casting of Bruce Willis a s the voice of Mikey is what m a k e s the movie. Another key was that Willis was allowed to write most of the dialogue for Mikey (Joan Rivers wrote the rest). This was a good move because the baby needed a kind of smart-aleck attitude, and I can't think of anyone who could pull that off better than Willis.

Holland dinner theater to cast shows

by Jim Monnett co-editor The High Spirits T h e a t e r , Holland's first dinner theater, is casting for its two productions for its Dec. 6 opening.

Tonight and tomorrow night, Oct. 25 and 26, David J . Crum, the owner and m a n a g e r , is holding auditions for "Visitor From Forest Hills" (from " P l a z a Suite") by Neil Simon and " N e x t " by Terrence McNally, his first two productions.

He is looking for two men and o n e w o m a n p l a y i n g 45- to 5 0 - y e a r - o l d s , one m a n a n d woman playing early twenties and one woman playing a 30- to 40-year-old.

C r u m is p a y i n g h i s c a s t m e m b e r s $20 to $25 a show, plus a little more for the leads. He is also looking for an assistant director/production manager and a light technician.

P e r f o r m a n c e dates will continue throughout D e c e m b e r .

Auditions will be held a t 7 p.m. a t 455 E a s t 8th Street in Holland (look for signs).

According to Crum, for one p r i c e p a t r o n s will e n j o y a c a t e r e d dinner with possible songs performed by the waiters and waitresses. A musical or comedy one a c t will also t a k e place during dinner. Then, t h e r e will be more piano music with dessert after the show and there will be a possibility for dancing. " I t will be a full night's entertainment," Crum said. "And that's what I like to offer. You're getting a big bang for your buck.

It's fun for m e . " The meals will be catered by a yet-to-be-determined c o m p a n y and will come in two varieties.

Crum said there will be a "white tablecloth show" which will be a semi-formal m e a l of finer food with a choice of two entrees and would cost between $25 and $38 for the entire evening.

Crum also hopes to offer a "picnic s h o w " in the $18 t o $ 2 2 r a n g e with m o r e of a casual family atmosphere and s o m e t i m e s following a theme such a s Mexican, Italian or Western.

C r u m is looking for a c a t e r e r of "known or high q u a l i t y " so that the "white tablecloth" meal will be of a comparable quality to fine restaurants.

"What often h a p p e n s , " Crum said, "is community theater and Hope Theater set up packages with a r e a r e s t a u r a n t s for their shows. I just brought it all together." Crum said that it ends up being about the s a m e price. " I ' m confident that the pricing is right for this neighborhood, this neighborhood being Western Michigan," C r u m said.

High Spirits T h e a t e r does not have a liquor license. In the f u t u r e Crum might look into getting one, but the most he would serve, he says, is b e e r and wine.

C r u m has been "looking for a place for a y e a r and a half for live t h e a t e r . " He is the sole owner, but is interested in b a c k e r s if they a r e the right people "who have a similar desire to participate in something f u n . " With the holidays coming up, Crum is offering shows and seating for c o r p o r a t e and p r i v a t e parties. He is offering groups from a m i n i m u m of 10 to entire houses for a show.

The theater seats 150 to 200 quite comfortably according to Crum, but the capacity is between 250 and 300 people. Crum will only fill the house to capacity for corporate groups where the people all know each other already.

All shows a r e by reservation only and run every Wednesday through Friday night. Dinner is served from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Shows begin a t 8 p.m. with dessert, coffee and dancing afterward.

by Brian Watkins guest writer Michael W. Smith, one of cont e m p o r a r y Christian music's hottest stars, is currently touring the nation on his "i 2 ( e y e ) " tour.

One of his m a n y stops included the Stadium Arena in Grand Rapids. A crowd of about 2,500 people gathered on Wednesday, October 11, to see Smith in concert.

The opening act was M a r g a r e t Becker. A fairly new face to the Christian music scene, Becker got the show off to a good start.

Though not one of my personal favorites, her music contains meaningful messages. Becker was a decent opener for Smith,

but he could have done better with Renee Garcia, who also performed that evening.

The time finally c a m e for Smith, and, needless to say, the crowd w a s ready. (Although 1 was ready long before, having met him earlier that day.) He began his musical showcase with the song "Help You Find Your W a y " f r o m the "i 2 ( e y e ) " album. His opening songs were very energetic and really got the crowd going.

After a while. Smith slowed things down, telling the touching story of a young m a n who wanted to take his life. Michael then s a n g the song that c h a n g e d " J o h n n y ' s " mind, " T h e Last Letter."

Other songs p e r f o r m e d by Smith lliat night included, "Live a n d L e a r n , " " H a n d of Providence," and " I Hear L e e s h ^ " And no Michael W. Smith conc e r t would be complete without the song " F r i e n d s " which was written by Michael and his wife Debbie.

Eventually he was banished f r o m G e r m a n y only to continuously flee a d v a n c i n g Nazi forces until he finally left E u r o p e for the United States. His work supported the o v e r t h r o w of t h e Hitler regime.

Brecht sings t h e p r a i s e s of the c o m m o n m a n . His work sought to m a k e a d i f f e r e n c e in people's lives. Hope College T h e a t r e ' s p r o d u c t i o n of 4 4 B r e c h t o n B r e c h t " does g r e a t justice to t h e m e m o r y of Beretolt B r e c h t ' s life and his work. It is a play t h a t should not only b e seen, but also contemplated.

P e r f o r m a n c e s a r e scheduled this week for Wed., Oct. 25th through Sat., Oct. 28, a t 8 p.m. in the DeWitt T h e a t r e . An a u d i e n c e participation p r o g r a m will follow the Saturday evening performance.

T h e u l t i m a t e s u c c e s s of " B r e c h t on B r e c h t " lies in the a u d i e n c e ' s a b i l i t y to g r a s p Brecht's m e s s a g e . This is not the conventional, purely entertaining d r a m a t i c piece s o m e might anticipate. " B r e c h t on B r e c h t " evokes a c o m m i t m e n t f r o m its audience, pleading with t h e m to consider the s t a t e of mankind, h u m a n suffering, a n d w a r . B r e c h t a s k s questions that h a v e no simple solutions Here a r e found deep philosophical concepts, politics, i n j u s t i c e , i n h u m a n i t y , ignorance, and passivity converging at once on stage. B r e c h t has much to offer the audience, but it is not pleasant m e s s a g e s that he sends.

The show leaves a definite impression that sticks with the audience a f t e r the c u r t a i n closes.

Brecht w a r n s that history m a y well r e p e a t past events unless humanity m a k e s a stand.

The trip c a m e about a f t e r Bruce Haight, B r i a n ' s father, b e c a m e a c o o r d i n a t o r for F a k e y e . a visiting a r t i s t at Western Michigan U n i v e r s i t y during the last half of 1988.

Brian c h a u f f e u r e d F a k e y e around, so later F a k e y e "switched r o l e s " and invited t h e m back earlier this y e a r . Consequently, the photographs contain scenes of F a k e y e ' s work, f a m i l y , life and the people he ecountered on his journeys in Nigeria.

After t h e exhibit, Haight plans to 4 'keep (the photographs) a s some good m e m o r i e s .

Haight used a r e g u l a r 35mm Nikon c a m e r a a n d took one thous a n d p i c t u r e s to get t h e photographs t h a t a r e in the exhibit. He also w a s instructed by Neil S a m i a ; Bill M a y e r , chairperson of the a r t d e p a r t m e n t ; and Dr. John Wilson, professor of art.

Haight's f a t h e r helped with developing t h e black and white photos and t h e d a r k r o o m printing, but Haight s a y s h e did m o s t of the work.

Ensemble and orchestra to present concert Oct. 27 ( H O P E ) - The Hope CoUege Wind E n s e m b l e a n d O r c h e s t r a will present a joint concert F r i day, Oct. 27, a t 8 p . m . in D i m n e n t Memorial Chapel.

The concert will be a p a r t of the college's a n n u a l P a r e n t s Weekend activities. The public is invited. Admission is free.

The Wind E n s e m b l e is d i r e c t e d by professor Russell Floyd a n d t h e O r c h e s t r a by p r o f e s s o r Robert R i t s e m a .

F e a t u r e d soloist will be violinist J o h n Gilbert, a s s i s t a n t professor of music. He will perform the Tschaikovsky Violin Concerto in D M a j o r with the orc h e s t r a . P r o f e s s o r Gilbert has been a m e m b e r of the Hope faculty for four y e a r s , s e r v i n g a s professor of violin, viola a n d music history. He holds the bachelor of m u s i c d e g r e e f r o m Yale University. He a p p e a r s frequently on the faculty c h a m b e r music s e r i e s a n d w a s f e a t u r e d soloist with the Hope o r c h e s t r a in 1967.

The Wind E n s e m b l e will open the concert with " F l o r e n t i n e r

M a r c h " by the Czechoslovakian composer, Ji l i us F u c i k . This will be followed by a composition for b a n d by t h e c o n t e m p o r a r y English composer, Edward Gregson, entitled " P r e l u d e F o r An O c c a s i o n " and " V a r i a n t s On a M e d i a e v a l T u n e " by t h e American composer Norman Dello Joiq.

The Wind E n s e m b l e will conclude the first half of the prog r a m with " J o h n W i l l i a m s : Evening At P o p s . " This a r r a n g e ment by J o h n Higgings f e a t u r e s some of the most popular compositions by J o h n Williams.

The o r c h e s t r a ' s p a r t of the prog r a m will include, in addition to the Tschaikovsky Violin concerto, an o v e r t u r e by t h e R u s s i a n composer Blazounov, a n d to conclude t h e p r o g r a m , " B u c k a r o o H o l i d a y " by t h e f a m o u s American composer Aaron Copland. The music of A a r o n Copland will be f e a t u r e d a t m o s t concerts during this school y e a r as the d e p a r t m e n t c e l e b r a t e s t h e 90th b i r t h d a y of one of A m e r i c a ' s most honored c o m p o s e r s .

"I personally believe in the pre-game p r a y e r , " said Georgia's President Charles G. Knapp. ' i thought it was a grand tradition a t the University of Georgia, and I'm very, very saddened that we a r e going to have to discontinue it."

A recent Supreme Court ruling that banned pre-game p r a y e r a t high school g a m e s in Georgia prompted Knapp to end his school's tradition. " I must conclude that the likelihood of successfully defending the pre-game p r a y e r a t the University of Georgia is very

slight," said Knapp,who believes the ruling also applies to colleges and universities.

Since the 1962 U.S. S u p r e m e Court ruling a g a i n s t p r a y e r in public schools, s t a t e c a m p u s e s technically have been b a r r e d f r o m mixing religion and schoolsponsored events such as football games.

Football p r a y e r s , in fact, have caused controversy in the past.

University of Texas-El P a s o football coach Bill Yung drew fire in 1963 a f t e r h e and Baylor University coach G r a n t Teaff held a joint t e a m p r a y e r on the field before their g a m e .

The Amercian Civil Liberties Union charged in 1984 that Memphis State head football coach Rey Demsey forced his players to participate in locker room prayer. The Freedom F r o m Religion Foundation asked

Schopp's leadership guides women's soccer team

by Greta Kennedy staff writer Lynn Schopp, the captain of Hope s w o m e n ' s soccer t e a m , is a junior here, originally f r o m C a r a m e l , Indiana. She plays both indoor and outdoor soccer a s a first-generation s t u d e n t he r e .

Lynn c a m e to Hope not only to play soccer, but because of Hope s beautifully located c a m pus, and for the high a c a d e m i c quality that she feels Hope offers. A biology m a j o r , she is looking at various g r a d u a t e schools in an interest to continue her interest in genetics.

Soccer has been a p a r t of Lynn's life for over ten y e a r s .

She s t a r t e d playing in fourth grade, a spirited little girl who found the sport fascinating. Lynn then m a n a g e d to recruit her f a t h e r a s a coach, and a soccer t e a m began in C a r a m e l . L a t e r , during sixth grade, the community began to support a traveling t e a m so that the young p l a y e r s could c o m p e t e with t e a m s f r o m other states. It was this that began the soccer fever that now infested her entire family, involving all of them in the game. Lynn's younger brother, a L A U R A B., Sue. Laura S..

Right now. Lynn is focusing most of her concentration on Hope soccer. She will continue to do so the rest of her t i m e at Hope and stay a m a j o r force on the team.
