Nixon Predicts Comeback For GOP in Elections " T h i s N o v e m b e r the Republic a n P a r t y will m a k e the greatest c o m e b a c k of a n y p a r t y in h i ^ o r y ; there will be a g a i n of 4 0 seats in the House, a net of three senators, six g o v e r n o r s a n d o v e r 7 0 0 legislators." These election p r e d i c t i o n s were f o r e c a s t b y f o r m e r Vice President Richard Nixon d u r i n g a partisan speech delivered last T u e s d a y at Western M i c h i g a n University in K a l a m azoo. Prior to his a d d r e s s , Mr. N i x o n held a press conference d u r i n g which he dealt with a wide r a n g e of q u e s t i o n s d e a l i n g with U.S. foreign a n d d o m e s t i c policy. C O N C E R N I N G F E D KRAI, aid to p r i v a t e colleges such as H o p e , Mr. N i x o n suggested that o n e a r e a the g o v e r n m e n t could aid wn« t h r o u g h a R e p u b l i c a n p r o p o s a l " t o p r o v i d e for tax credits for p a r e n t s " p u t t i n g their child r e n t h r o u g h college. He w a r n e d that a n y a s s i s t a n c e must be of a type which " i n no w a y w o u l d b r i n g federal c o n t r o l . " Mr. N i x o n c o n d e m n e d the present Selective Service System. He s a i d that it " w o r k s a n injustice o n y o u n g people f r o m less privileged f a m i l i e s . " He noted the d a n ger of c r e a t i n g a n "intellectual a n d financial elite w h o a v o i d serv i c e . " The f o r m e r Vice President f a v o r s a f o r m of " u n i v e r s a l milit a r y s e r v i c e " but would s u p p o r t " s o m e f o r m of l o t t e r y " as a n alternative. MR, N I X O N criticized the J o h n s o n A d m i n i s t r a t i o n for the w a y in which it d o m i n a t e d the 89th C o n g r e s s . He noted how the President referred to the C o n g r e s s as " m y Congress." He suggested that this w a s a n u n h e a l t h f u l rel a t i o n s h i p - n o t g o o d " f o r the Pres-

ident, the C o n g r e s s , or the nation " He s a i d thai a " o n e p a r t y gove r n m e n t of either p a r t y is never a g o o d g o v e r n m e n t , " that the essence of o u r d e m o c r a t i c system is the " c o m p e t i t i o n of the two p a r t i e s , " and stressed the necessity of s t r e n g t h e n i n g the " l o y a l o p p o s i t i o n " in the c o m i n g election Q U E S T I O N E D a b o u t the Vietn a m w a r , Mr. N i x o n s a i d that " w e h a v e no interest in establishing b a s e s , c o l o n i z i n g or exploiting the people in S o u t h e a s t A s i a . " The U.S. is there " t o halt c o m munist a g g r e s s i o n , to prevent the Pacific Ocean f r o m b e c o m i n g a red sea a n d to fend off the certainty of a w o r l d w a r " which would occur if c o m m u n i s m c a m e to d o m i n a t e all of Asia. HE A T T A C K E D the Administ r a t i o n for indecisiveness a n d a d e m o n s t r a t e d " l a c k of d i r e c t i o n " in d e a l i n g with the w a r . S p e a k i n g of the differences between the s o u t h e r n D e m o c r a t s a n d Republicans, Mr. N i x o n n o t e d that the "new l e a d e r s h i p of the Southern Republican party has a v o i d e d the racist d e m a g o g u e r y characteristic of D e m o c r a t i c leaders such a s Wallace a n d M a d d o x . " Mr. N i x o n c h a r g e d that the Adm i n i s t r a t i o n is indecisive concerni n g inflation. He said that " a v o t e for LB,I w a s a vote for tax increases in 1 9 6 7 . " HE SCORED the P r e s i d e n t ' s failure to m a k e m o r e t h a n " t o k e n c u t s " in s p e n d i n g a n d w a r n e d that unless s o m e t h i n g is done, tax increases a r e inevitable a n d that they would t r i g g e r a recession which would wipe out all o u r economic gains.

A P O m e m b e r s stated that last y e a r A l b i o n ' s faculty a n d co-eds o u t g a v e H o p e ' s faculty a n d coeds, while H o p e ' s men were outbleeding their c o u n t e r p a r t s . T h e y a l s o reported that a low three percent of H o p e ' s co-eds particip a t e d last y e a r .

Class Size Surpasses Student-Faculty Ratio lV George ri<»nriT4> Arwad> AimimwIw By At Ho p e College this semester the student faculty ratio cited by the Public Relations office is 16 to 1. What does this ratio m e a n a n d what does it i m p l y ? A c c o r d i n g to Dean of A c a d e m i c A f f a i r s William Mathis, this figure is o b t a i n e d by d i v i d i n g the n u m ber of full-time s t u d e n t s by the n u m b e r of full-time faculty. However, an o v e r a l l a v e r a g e of student-faculty r a t i o s in each d e p a r t ment s h o w s a college ratio of 2 5 to 1. The r a t i o is used as a n index when colleges a r e compared. D E A N M A T H I S said that the r a t i o " d o e s not a p p l y even remotely to class size." T h e incorrect idea that this indicates the n u m b e r of students in a n a v e r a g e c l a s s is often " p l a y e d u p " b y the press a n d m i s u n d e r s t o o d b y students, the Dean s a i d . Despite the fact that it h a s no direct relation to the size of classes, most H o p e s t u d e n t s s a i d they t h o u g h t the 16 to 1 r a t i o implied to them that 16 w a s the a v e r a g e size for a H o p e College class. As o n e f r e s h m a n girl put it, " w h e n I r e a d that figure in a c o m p a r i s o n s t u d y of A m e r i c a n colleges, I expected most classes to be a r o u n d 15 to 2 0 s t u d e n t s . "

Ninety-two f r e s h m e n a r e enrolled in an I n t r o d u c t i o n to Psychology section designed for them. T h e Introduction to Liberal Studies c o u r s e t a u g h t by Dr. 1). I v a n D y k s t r a which is required f o r f r e s h m e n consists of two sections of over 130 each. Other required c o u r s e s frequented by f r e s h m e n a r e a l s o c r o w d e d . 1 he Old I estament s u r v e y c o u r s e h a s sections e n r o l l i n g 4 0 to 51 students. I he N a t i o n a l G o v e r n ment c o u r s e h a s sections filled with o v e r 45 students. The Physical Science lecture is given to n o n - p h y s i c s m a j o r s fulfilling their science r e q u i r e m e n t in a class of 119. O N C E A HOPE student gets b e y o n d the f r e s h m a n y e a r a n d b e g i n s to c o n c e n t r a t e m o r e in a m a j o r field, the classes get s m a l l er, a p p r o a c h i n g the 16 to 1 m a r k in most d e p a r t m e n t s . A check in the r e c o r d s office s h o w s that an Electronics c o u r s e in p h y s i c s h a s o n l y three s t u d e n t s enrolled; only s e v e n a r e f o u n d in a section of Public S p e a k i n g ; a n d a s e m i n a r in E u r o p e a n h i s t o r y includes only six students. Other

s e m i n a r s a n d i n d e p e n d e n t projects h a v e faculty m e m b e r s assigned to o n l y one or two students in a section. A close look at e n r o l l m e n t s in c o u r s e s a b o v e the i n t r o d u c t o r y level s h o w s that in s o m e d e p a r t ments the a v e r a g e size of the classes h a n d l e d b y a s i n g l e fa-

culty m e m b e r is g r e a t e r t h a n in other d e p a r t m e n t s . In the p s y c h o l o g y d e p a r t m e n t , c o u r s e s b e y o n d the i n t r o d u c t o r y c o u r s e a v e r a g e 2 6 students per class. All the l a n g u a g e d e p a r t ments h a v e r a t i o s in the higher n u m b e r e d sections of 10 to 1 or better.

A N A V E R A G E of 2 3 in just the a d v a n c e d b u s i n e s s o r economics c o u r s e exists together with an o v e r a l l a v e r a g e of 15 in soc i o l o g y , 14 in speech, a n d 10 in art. I he p h i l o s o p h y department, even excluding the f r e s h m a n c o u r s e , h a s a n a v e r a g e of 25 per class. Fifty-three s t u d e n t s are f o u n d in P h i l o s o p h y of Religion a n d 4 7 in the P h i l o s o p h y of the N a t u r a l Sciences. E X C L U D I N G Physical Science, the p h y s i c s d e p a r t m e n t h a s an a v e r a g e class size of 12 to 1 while c h e m i s t r y a n d b i o l o g y h a v e a n a v e r a g e of 2 2 a n d 2 5 respectively.

FRESHMAN LECTURE—Winants Auditorium is filled with freshmen taking Introduction to Liberal Studies, taught by Dr. D. Ivan Dykstra. Over 130 students are enrolled in each section of the course.

A d v a n c e d c o u r s e s in political science a r e t a u g h t in sections ave r a g i n g o n l y 16 while in the English d e p a r t m e n t , the college's largest, c o u r s e s b e y o n d the sophom o r e World L i t e r a t u r e c o u r s e ave r a g e 2 4 per class. One section of the A m e r i c a n N o v e l h a s 87 s t u d e n t s enrolled. T H E RECORDS seem to indicate t h a t the l a r g e r the department is at H o p e , the l a r g e r the size of the a v e r a g e c l a s s becomes, b o t h in i n t r o d u c t o r y a n d a d v a n c ed c o u r s e s .
