In r e s p o n s e to c o n c e r n s f r o m the P h y s i c a l Plant, a S t u d e n t C o n g r e s s task g r o u p is in the p r o c e s s of d r a w i n g up a p r o p o s a l to c h a n g e the hours of parietais. Residence Life C o m m i t t e e representative Kevin L e w i s ( ' 9 7 ) p r e s e n t e d the c o n c e r n s to C o n g r e s s at their m e e t i n g last T h u r s d a y . "Julie G o e b e l b r o u g h t the proposal to m o v e p a r i e t a i s f r o m 11 a.m. to 10 a . m . to the R e s i d e n tial L i f e C o m m i t t e e , " L e w i s said. " T h e proposal lets the p e o p l e at the Physical Plant get in an hour earlier to w o r k b e c a u s e they have a shortened s c h e d u l e . " T h e p r o p o s a l w o u l d g i v e the s a m e a c c e s s to students. " S t u d e n t C o n g r e s s a t t e m p t e d to put this t h r o u g h last year, but it d i d n ' t p a s s the R e s i d e n tial L i f e C o m m i t t e e , " s a i d P r e s i d e n t N i n a Bieliauskas. R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s of Physical Plant raised c o n c e r n s at the O c t . 2 3 Residential L i f e C o m m i t t e e meeting. In an eight hour day, the custodial staff has f o u n d it nearly i m p o s s i b l e to a c c o m p l i s h all of their d u t i e s with the restrictions of parietais, they said. M a i n t e n a n c e is h a v i n g s i m i l a r p r o b l e m s . " T h e m a i n t e n a n c e p e o p l e get w o r k o r d e r s in c o t t a g e s and d o r m s earlier than 11 a.m., but they have to put off g e t t i n g started until after t h e n , "

said Fred Coates, director of Physical Plant. Parietais are also a p r e s s i n g c o n c e r n for the custodial t e a m s responsible for c l e a n i n g resid e n c e halls. " W e [a t e a m of f e m a l e c u s t o d i a n s ] h a v e a n u m b e r of m e n ' s d o r m s , but w e c a n ' t get in until a f t e r n o o n , " said Lee Wilson, c u s t o d i a n and team leader o f the s o u t h s i d e . " W e looked at w o r k s c h e d u l e s , but it w o u l d h e l p us out greatly to have that extra hour." Students support the change, and Student C o n g r e s s ' S o c i a l E n v i r o n m e n t task g r o u p is currently m e e t i n g to d e c i d e what their a p p r o a c h to the situation will be. " T h i s issue w a s given to Student C o n g r e s s , and n o w we are d e c i d i n g w h e t h e r to m a k e a m e m o or a proposal to Residential L i f e , " L e w i s s a i d . "Basically, the only d i f f e r e n c e is that a m e m o w o u l d be a c k n o w l e d g i n g the c o n c e r n s and a proposal w o u l d support t h e m . " C o n g r e s s representatives discussed a variety of w a y s t o a p p r o a c h the c o n c e r n s at last w e e k ' s m e e t i n g . T h e m e e t i n g consisted of s u g g e s t i o n s to p u s h for more relaxed parietais or to write up the proposal as it w a s presented to them. T h e only action Student C o n g r e s s did take w a s to turn the issue over to the task g r o u p s o that they m a y present their ideas at the next m e e t i n g . T h e Social E n v i r o n m e n t task g r o u p w a s "also l o o k i n g into a b o l i s h i n g parietais in a p a r t m e n t s and c o t t a g e s altogether," L e w i s said. C o n g r e s s will m a k e a decision o n w h a t c o u r s e of action to take at this T h u r s d a y ' s m e e t i n g .

M e m b e r s of t h e College c o m m u n i t y a r e being a s k e d to use e x t r e m e caution following the alleged physical assault of a female Hope student n e a r c a m p u s S a t u r d a y night. T h e w o m a n was p u r s u e d by two males in t h e v i c i n i t y o f 14th S t r e e t a n d L i n c o l n Avenue at approximately midnight. She was assaulted on city p r o p e r t y b e t w e e n College E a s t A p a r t m e n t s a n d a 14th Street w a r e h o u s e . H e r a t t a c k e r s fled w h e n she s c r e a m e d , a n d s h e r a n to safety. S h e w a s treated for cuts a n d a b r a s i o n s a n d released from Holland C o m m u n i t y Hospital. She did not know h e r p u r s u e r s , according to D i r e c t o r of P u b l i c R e l a t i o n s T o m Renner. " W e a r e e n c o u r a g i n g s t u d e n t s to w a l k in g r o u p s a n d u s e t h e s h u t t l e vans,** R e n n e r s a i d . T h e C o l l e g e ' s first All Saint's D a y Celebration of W o m e n s o u g h t to laud s o m e of the w o m e n o f t e n u n r e c o g n i z e d in the context of the holiday yesterday in D i m n e n t C h a p e l . S o m e 4 5 s t u d e n t s and faculty attended the w o r s h i p s e r v i c e led b y t h e R e v . K a m a Jongerius Zuidema, minister of congregational care at Christ Memorial C h u r c h in Holland. "In a day c e l e b r a t i n g all saints, w h e r e are the w o m e n ? " s h e a s k e d the c o n g r e g a t i o n . "I w o n d e r if on this S a i n t ' s D a y w e can g o beyond the familiar, w e l l - k n o w n saints and find the w o m e n w h o have c o m e b e f o r e . A n d w h e n we do find t h o s e w o m e n , will we allow t h e m to s p e a k a f r e s h t o our lives?" Z u i d e m a led t h e O l d T e s t a m e n t l e s s o n a b o u t the story of T a m a r in G e n e s i s 38. " T a m a r ' s story leaps out to m e a s a story of w o m e n ' s potential — w o m e n ' s potential to be strong and w o m e n ' s potential to be misunderstood," she said. T h e hour-long service w a s organized by Peter Kurdziel ( ' 9 6 ) as an alternative to a written a s s i g n m e n t for Religion 236, Christian Feminism. " B e i n g a part of a Christian, liberal arts env i r o n m e n t , I really feel that this is an integral part o f o u r faith and learning," he said. "I dec i d e d that rather than write a p a p e r talking about w h a t the s e r v i c e s are, I'd just d o it." Kurdziel o r g a n i z e d the service, w h i c h featured w o m e n in every role, f r o m minister to organist. "It w a s an All S a i n t ' s celebration of w o m e n w h o have g o n e b e f o r e us, w h o have s h o w n u s the saintly, C h r i s t l i k e e x a m p l e , a n d for s o m e reason or o t h e r have not b e e n m e n tioned," he said. T h e service included a litany that used inclusive God l a n g u a g e f r o m the book WomanWord, WomanSong by Miriam T h e r e s e Winter. " I n s p i r e d by this w i t n e s s of o u r sisters in faith, let us now g o forth e n c o u r a g e d to give o u r best efforts, knowing that the grace of G o d is p o w e r unto g o o d , " the litany c o n c l u d e d . Educators' society inducts 'pioneering' student chapter JODI M C F A R L A N D campusbeat

T h r e e y e a r s of e d u c a t i o n a l t r a i l b l a z i n g received f o r m a l recognition last T h u r s d a y w h e n representatives of the Association for S u p e r v i sion and C u r r i c u l u m D e v e l o p m e n t f o r m a l l y inducted Hope's " p i o n e e r i n g " student chapter, the first of its kind in the o r g a n i z a t i o n ' s history. A S C D is a premier professional association for e d u cators, counselors and a d m i n i s t r a t o r s that stretches across national b o u n d a r i e s , linking m e m b e r s w o r l d w i d e . T h a t link w a s e x t e n d e d to the s t u d e n t A S C D m e m b e r s of the C o l l e g e at the induction. " H o p e is the first collcge a n y w h e r e , ever to have an u n d e r g r a d u a t e chapter of A S C D , " said President John J a c o b s o n . T h e idea to join the g r o u p began in 1993, when

eight s t u d e n t s and e d u c a t i o n p r o f e s s o r s J e a n i n e D c l l ' O l i o a n d Leslie W e s s m a n u n d e r t o o k the c h a l l e n g e to c r e a t e a s t u d e n t c h a p t e r of the organization that w o u l d p r o v i d e m e m b e r s additional a v e n u e s of p r e p a r a t i o n t h r o u g h p r o f e s sional n e t w o r k i n g and e n h a n c e d c l a s s r o o m exp e r i e n c e s . T h r e e y e a r s later, m e m b e r s h i p in the c h a p t e r has increased to a r o u n d 130 f u ture teachers. ASCD memb e r s h i p internationally is up to nearly 200,000 p e o p l e at t h e heart of the educational field. Representatives from A S C D n a m e d H o p e ' s chapter as a prototype for c o l l c g e c a m p u s e s internationally.
