Plans for H o p e ' s new physical e d u c a t i o n c e n t e r received a b o o s t in the f o r m of p r o p e r t y d o n a t e d by A m e r i c a n Aerosols, Inc. of H o l l a n d . The a c q u i r e d site contains t h e firm's f o r m e r m a n u f a c turing p l a n t l o c a t e d b e t w e e n 12th and 11th streets and east of the C h e s a p e a k e and O h i o railroad.

T h e 18.000 s q u a r e - f o o t building served as the c o m p a n y ' s Holland base prior to 1968 w h e n it was r e l o c a t e d in the t o w n ' s industrial p a r k . A n n o u n c e m e n t of the gift was m ade j o i n t l y by J o e Knoll and Herman Dirkse, president and vice-president respectively of A m e r i c a n Aerosols. goal to build a new physical e d u cation c e n t e r . " Knoll and Dirkse said. Ho p e has also acquired all p r o p e r t y east of C o l u m b i a Avenue to the C & 0 tracks and b e t w e e n 13th and 14th s t r e e t s for the proposed center. T h e site is located a d j a c e n t to the s o u t h e a s t p e r i m e t e r of the main c a m p u s . A $ 2 . 5 million f u n d raising campaign is now u n d e r w a y for t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n of the new building which, a c c o r d i n g t o p r e l i m i n a r y plans, w o u l d c o n t a i n a g y m nasium, olympic-size s w i m m i n g pool, h a n d b a l l c o u r t s , wrestling area, t r a i n i n g r o o m , lockers, classr o o m s and f a c u l t y o f f i c e s . The n e w s t r u c t u r e will replace Carnegie G y m n a s i u m which was c o n s t r u c t e d in 1906.

N Y K E R K f e a t u r e s the freshm a n a n d s o p h o m o r e w o m e n in t h e a t r i c a l , oratorical and musical c o m p e t i t i o n . It has b e e n an a n n u al event at H o p e since 1937 and is c o n s i d e r e d a c o u n t e r p a r t t o the Pull. T h e f r e s h m a n w o m e n will sing "If 1 Ruled the W o r l d " and are c o a c h e d by j u n i o r Pam L e e s t m a . A c h o r u s of s o p h o m o r e w o m e n will p r e s e n t " P e o p l e " as their song. T h e y are c o a c h e d by senior Kathy VanderMolen. P R E S E N T I N G the f r e s h m a n o r a t i o n will be Marian V o e t b u r g , c o a c h e d by j u n i o r C a r o n Noggle. while Karen S t r o c k will deliver the s o p h o m o r e o r a t i o n . She is c o a c h e d by senior Marcia D y k s t r a . For the theatrical part of the c o m p e t i t i o n , the s o p h o m o r e s have chosen " T h e Wizard of O z . " Senior:, P a i n Ross and Margie Barr o w m a n share directorial duties. T H E CAST of the play includes Darlene D e n l l o l l a n d e r as the little old lady; A n n McDonald as T o t o ; Debbie Makely as the heroine D o r o t h y , D e b b y Boraski as the g o o d witch, Rita H e n d r i c k son as the s c a r e c r o w , and Deb Zack as the tin w o o d s m a n .

Also a p p e a r i n g in t h e s o p h o m o r e p l a y are Dixie Fair, w h o plays the c o w a r d l y lion, Kim Wilson as t h e g a t e k e e p e r , Barb Wrigley as t h e great and p o w e r f u l O z , while K a r e n Sterk is t h e wicked witch of t h e west. THE MUNCHKINS include Jan A n d e r s o n , Lisa R a l e y , N a n c y Wilcox, Pam Jarvis, and L y n n e Kurtzenberger. The Winkies are p l a y e d by Ilene Chrysler, Carolee T r a p p , Nancy Pickell, Linda Russell, Sue Beeshers and Jan Wertz. Liane Sing a p p e a r s as the sun, Kay M o o r e s as the c o r n s t a l k , while J a n Wallace, Melissa G u t wein, B o n n i e Harvey and Diane McCabe are trees. THE F R E S H M A N w o m e n have chosen " L i t t l e Red Rides A g a i n " as their theatrical p r e s e n t a t i o n and are directed by j u n i o r s Darryl J o h n s o n and Linda Barthels. Stone announces resignation Director of Planned Giving William S t o n e has resigned as of Dec. 1, P r e s i d e n t G o r d o n VanWylen a n n o u n c e d W e d n e s d a y . No successor has been n a m e d but VanWylen said, "I h o p e t o hire a person by Nov. 15." S T O N E P L A N S to t a k e a j o b at t h e University of Florida as associate d i r e c t o r of d e v e l o p m e n t for p l a n n e d giving. When he came t o Ho pe in 1 9 7 1 , S t o n e initiated the d e f e r r e d giving p r o g r a m . He t e r m e d his e x p e r i e n c e here as "very r e w a r d i n g , " but said his new j o b o f f e r e d him " a b e t t e r opportunity." Deferred giving is a p r o g r a m w h e r e b y the d o n o r g r a n t s a relatively large s u m of m o n e y t o the college. T h e gift is invested, with the d o n o r receiving an agreedu p o n principal interest rate on a regular basis. When the d o n o r dies the entire invested grant b e c o m e s the p r o p e r t y of the college. V A N W Y L E N S A I D , " A new person will be hired t o carry on t h e w o r k of d e f e r r e d giving but the p o s i t i o n m i g h t be s t r u c t u r e d a little d i f f e r e n t l y . His m a i n responsibility w o u l d be in a d m i n i s t e r i n g d e f e r r e d giving, but he m i g h t also help us w i t h f u n d raising f r o m f o u n d a t i o n s a n d in d e v e l o p i n g the Build H o p e c a m p a i g n . " T H E P O S I T I O N requires a m a n of great abilities-incidentally, a m a n usually c a p a b l e of c o m m a n d i n g high salaries on t h e o u t s i d e , " V a n W y l e n said. He cont i n u e d , " I t is d i f f i c u l t to a t t r a c t a prospective director w h e n he w o u l d p r o b a b l y t a k e a big cut in salary f r o m his previous j o b . " I n f o r m e d s o u r c e s had speculated t h a t Dean of S t u d e n t s R o b e r t D e Y o u n g m i g h t be n a m e d as d i r e c t o r . V a n W y l e n indicated t h a t D e Y o u n g had been talked a b o u t for the j o b but that " w e are looking in o t h e r d i r e c t i o n s . "
