Following in the f o o t s t e p s of 76 years of tradition, this year's Nykerk performance was a n o t h e r great s h o w c a s e of vocals, acting a n d speaking. Professor John Nykerk, w h o m t h e music building w a s n a m e d after, organized t h e first ever Nykerk C u p C o m p e t i t i o n in M a r c h of 1936. Now, t h e r e are m o r e t h a n 200 s t u d e n t s involved. This year, t h e f r e s h m a n class of '15 had o n e of t h e largest s o n g g r o u p s w i t h 151 girls. "It is o n e of t h e largest s o n g g r o u p s on record," Elly V a n d e r Z o u w e n ('15) said. T h e girls have been practicing at least t w o h o u r s a night in o r d e r to p r e p a r e for t h e big day. Their song, "Eye of t h e Tiger," was t h e o p e n i n g to t h e show. An extensive integrated m a r k e t i n g e f f o r t is u n d e r w a y at H o p e , including u p d a t i n g of the colleges b r a n d or image along with a revised design of Hope's website a n d publications. Hope's website has s p o r t e d t h e s a m e look since 2006; s t u d e n t s and staff felt it w a s t i m e for a facelift. Hope's integrated marketing team joined with EM2, an e d u c a t i o n m a r k e t i n g firm based in Atlanta t o develop t h e n e w m a r k e t i n g effort w h i c h has a t h e m e of "Fully Alive." Bill Vanderbilt, vice president of admissions, is t h e chair of t h e n e w m a r k e t i n g project with a c o m m i t t e e of n i n e m e m b e r s . Hope's c o m m i t t e e and E M 2 are in t h e process of p r o m o t i n g Hope's "Fully Alive" image. The n e w image and website give t h e impression that H o p e is not old school but instead the school actually cares about t h e image it gives off." E h a r d t said t h e n e w look gives c u r r e n t s t u d e n t s "...a sense of H o p e pride in k n o w i n g that their school is trying t o stay n e w a n d improved." Vanderbilt gave special t h a n k s to t h e H o p e c o m m u n i t y for all of the material the c o m m i t t e e is able to work with.
