Three college students per thousand may have AIDS

by Michael O'Keeffe (CPS) - As m a n y as three out of every one thousand college students m a y h a v e AIDS, the preliminary results of a nationwide study involving 20 c a m puses show.

The results, if they hold up when the full study is completed in F e b r u a r y , would indicate students a r e not paying much attention to e f f o r t s to get t h e m to change their sex habits and mean a significant portion of the American student body is at risk of catching - and dying of AIDS, o b s e r v e r s say.

"If the figures hold hold, there is m o r e concern than we had anticipated," said Dr. Rolan Zick, director of the University of Colorado health c e n t e r . The Council for Exceptional C h i l d r e n is a p r o f e s s i o n a l organization for people who work with or a r e interested in working with children who h a v e learning disabilities or a r e considered gifted. Here at Hope, a s with most m a j o r colleges in Michigan, there is a student c h a p t e r .

The student c h a p t e r of SCEC v w a s f o r m e d about a year ago and is trying to i n c r e a s e its m e m b e r ship. They welcome anyone who might be interested in a c a r e e r in education or in special educa tion. The main goal of the group is to get to know others with similar interests and to help m a k e the transition f r o m student to t e a c h e r a smooth one The group is involved in m a n y different activities. They recent !y sold puppets a n d m a d e about $300 to build up their t r e a s u r y Over Halloween, a group of students went to the Van R a a l t e School to help a special education classroom put on a Halloween skit.

The chapter a t t e n d s s t a t e con ventions to get to know m e m b e r s of their organization f r o m other schools. Right now they a r e plan ning a Christmas party with the Grand Valley c h a p t e r . After J a n u a r y 1, a panel of t e a c h e r s in their first year of teaching will meet with the students to speak on what they wish they had learn ed and to give s o m e advice on how to p r e p a r e for teaching J a n e Glenney. s e c r e t a r y for SCEC. said that being in the g r o u p looks v e r y good on r e s u m e s . Many principals and s u p e r i n t e n d e n t s a t t e n d these conventions and, provided you have your r e s u m e , will give you an on-the-spot interview. It's a very good way to m a k e contacts for the future, she said.

The Hope c h a p t e r is always looking for interested students to help build up the group. At present, SCEC does not h a v e a set meeting time or place for r e g u l a r meetings, but the group does try to m e e t twice a month. T h e next meeting is November 28, at 9 p.m. in Lubbers 101. ding and sweet potato pie; a spicy, potato-filled Spanish omelette; a Spanish Curried rice and chicken dish; and tasty desserts including sweet, flaky baklava and Dutch banquet.

The occasion was stimulating to all five senses. The spicy, distinctly foreign a r o m a s were intoxicating. The dishes w e r e appetizing to the eye as well a s the palate and many of the students were dressed in the traditional colorful g a r b of their countries.

The event, which lasted about two hours, a t t r a c t e d a large crowd. Unfortunately, very few students attended. However, the dinner is held each y e a r a s a fund raiser for the club and to enhance the Hope College and Holland a r e a ' s a w a r e n e s s of the rich cultural variety around them.

Polls suggest young voters went for Dukakis in election (CPS) - Initial exit poll results suggested that a slight m a j o r i t y of the voters under age 25 voted for Gov. Michael Dukakis in the Nov. 8 election, though George Bush won the endorsement of 56 percent of the nation's college grads.

The results, tabulated from exit polls conducted by the NBC, ABC and CBS television networks, did not distinguish between college students and other voters younger than age 25.

ABC News found Dukakis won a m a j o r i t y of the votes cast by both the youngest (under the a g e of 25) and oldest (over the a g e of 60) citizens, while winning 51 per-

cent of those cast by people with only a high school diploma and 62 percent of the nation's high school dropouts.

New voters - typically those who have turned 18 since the 1984 presidential election - p r e f e r r e d Bush instead of Dukakis by a 50-47 percent margin.

Y o u n g v o t e r s , s a i d CBS political editor Dotty Lynch, w e r e c o n s p i c u o u s by t h e i r absence at the polls. Voters younger than 30 m a d e up only 20 percent of the electorate Nov. 8, down f r o m 24 percent in 1984.

In both 1980 and 1984, pollsters concluded a m a j o r i t y of the college students who voted endorsed

Ronald Reagan. The results were widely interpreted as a nationwide swing to the right on c a m puses.

More unscientific mock elections conducted on hundreds of c a m p u s e s this fall, moreover, suggested students favored the Republican this time around, too.

At S t e p h e n s C o l l e g e in Missouri, for e x a m p l e , Bush received 221 votes while Dukakis picked up 176.

Morris the Cat and Mickey Mouse each received one vote.

M I don't feel like Dukakis and Bentsen know what they a r e doing," said Erin Malone, a Democrat who said she voted for Bush.

At Virginia's George Mason University, the Republican ticket was chosen by almost twice as many s t u d e n t s as the Democrats. Bush received 51 p e r c e n t of t h e v o t e d u r i n g George Mason's mock election, while Dukakis got 33 percent. A large number of George Mason students - 16 percent - were undecided.

Bush also won mock elections at Bellarmine College in Kentucky and Arizona State University by wide margins.

But at the University of Pennsylvania, for example, Dukakis took 42 percent of the vote while Bush received 36 percent in a

Bernson accepts Milestone editorship

" I saw it a s an opportunity to use my m a n a g e m e n t and communication skills and felt that it w a s important enough to put in the t i m e , " said new Milestone editor senior Jill Bernson.

Her optimism and determination will be important factors in the creation of the 1988-89 yearbook, since the staff is getting such a late s t a r t and is already needing to meet deadlines.

There w a s some competition for the position of Milestone editor a f t e r the situation gained publicity. According to Bernson, approximately six others w e r e interviewed.

The entire staff is not set a s yet, but those that have been recruited, mainly sophomore and f r e s h m e n section editors, h a v e had prior experience with high school yearbooks This fact

a d d s to B e r n s o n ' s o p t i m i s m since she h a s had none. However, she is a Business Management m a j o r which should prove helpful in leading a yearbook staff. A photo editor and someone to work with a d v e r t i s e m e n t s a r e a r e a s that r e m a i n unfilled.

As f a r a s a deadline before Christmas is concerned, Bernson is assured that the publisher will be cooperative and will work with her since he is a w a r e of the disadvantages - a late s t a r t , filling staff positions - with which the Milestone is dealing.

Bernson has not received an outline of what needs to be done yet, but is optimistic in that she is s u r e the new staff will be able to handle it. " I ' v e heard it's going to be impossible, but I think t h a t ' s just bad publicity."

The publishers a r e shooting for next fall a s a date for final publication and distribution of the Milestone to students.

On the Write Track: I h a t e posing for pictures. T h e p h o t o g r a p h e r s a l w a y s m a k e you perch on those cold little m e t a l stools a n d shine those white-hot, painfully bright lights on you.

You w a n t to squint or blink but you c a n ' t b e c a u s e you'll ruin the picture, so you s t a r e into the b r i g h t n e s s until the b a c k s of your eyes a c h e . The p h o t o g r a p h e r s tell you to sit u p s t r a i g h t , r e l a x your shoulders, turn your h e a d and tilt your chin. Then they have t h e a u d a c i t y to tell you to smile. Right.

The whole thing r e m i n d s m e a lot of writing p a p e r s . I know, it's a s t r a n g e c o m p a r i s o n , but think about it. Often p r o f e s s o r s a r e just as r e s t r i c t i v e as p h o t o g r a p h e r s - t h e y d i c t a t e your topic a n d tell you just how m a n y pages or words to write, a n d expect y o u r plaper to h a v e a thesis and t h r e e m a i n points neatly f r a m e d by an introduction a n d conclusion. Then they tell you to be interesting a n d c r e a t i v e .

Right.

T r u e , it's no e a s y task to w r i t e a p a p e r that is both s t r u c t u r a l l y sound and stylistically appealing. It is so difficult, in fact, t h a t most of us sell out to w h a t I call the Fill-in- the-blank technique.

We set up a f r a m e w o r k with the guidelines of the writing assignm e n t , and then we just s o r t of plug in the words. F i g u r i n g t h a t page length should take p r e c e d e n c e o v e r personal style, we sacrifice originality a n d we write p a p e r s that h a v e g r e a t f o r m but a r e - w e l l - b o r i n g .

I ' m not suggesting t h a t a n y o n e should dismiss either the prof e s s o r ' s guidelines or the r u l e s of logic in order to be f r e e to spontaneously spew out their s t r e a m of conciousness and p a s s it off a s good, interesting writing. What I a m saying is t h a t we would all be b e t t e r w r i t e r s if we could l e a r n to be c r e a t i v e within the guidelines of the a s s i g n m e n t . And the w a y to do that, it s e e m s to m e , is first to learn to be c r e a t i v e without any restrictions.

And now, having successfully c i r c umvented all the conventional rules for a well-organized article, I c o m e to m y point. Most of us c a n w r i t e well-structured p a p e r s b e c a u s e a s s t u d e n t s we p r a c t i c e that kind of writing. I believe that w e could also write creative, interesting p a p e r s if we practiced t h a t kind of writing a s well. If we could p r a c t i c e writing for the s a k e of writing, a n d e n j o y the process of self-expression without worrying about s t r u c t u r e or, m o r e i m p o r t a n t l y , g r a d e s , then we could develop a personal style which would give life to our writing a s s i g n m e n t s when we applied it.

A journal is the p e r f e c t tool for developing style. Whether it is kept in a spiral notebook or in one of those fabric-covered blank books, a journal is a place w h e r e you c a n write without rules. No one sees what you w r i t e in your journal, so it doesn't m a t t e r what you write or how you write it. A j o u r n a l c a n b e a s o r t of

autobiography, a t r a v e l o g u e , a collection of thoughts or a n outpouring of e m o t i o n s , but it doesn't h a v e to be a n y of those things and it could be all of t h e m .

You could write about the p a r t y last weekend, e x p r e s s your feelings about your latest scope, sort out your c a r e e r plans or r e c o r d an observation about Life in general.

Maybe you w r i t e in your journal every d a y , or even twice a day, or m a y b e only twice a month. But no m a t t e r how often you decide to w r i t e in your journal, e v e r y t i m e you do write, you will be p r a c t i c i n g a n d developing your own p e r s o n a l , spontaneous style.

As a n English m a j o r , I w r i t e p a p e r a f t e r p a p e r , a n d m y journal is m y escape. T h e writing in m y journal is u n r e s t r i c t e d a n d uninhibited and s o m e t i m e s not even g r a m m a t i c a l . My j o u r n a l gives m e a p l a c e to file m y m e m o r i e s and sort m y thoughts, but a s a writing device, it d e e p s my style f r o m going stale. By

keeping a journal I h a v e l e a r n e d to write unself-consciously, to try new ideas and e x p e r i m e n t with words. The things I h a v e learned f r o m writing in m y journal c a r r y over to writing m y a s s i g n m e n t s .

I still h a v e trouble giving m y p a p e r s personality when I h a v e to use a cookie-cutter f o r m a t , but I h a v e found that it is e a s i e r to impose s t r u c t u r e on a c r e a t i v e style than to try to s u p e r i m p o s e creativity on a p r e d e t e r m i n e d f o r m a t . Keeping a journal has helped m e to develop m y own style, which I c a n a d a p t to the guidelines for a n y a s s i g n m e n t .

The endless b a r r a g e of p a p e r a s s i g n m e n t s f o r c e s m e to keep m y s t r u c t u r a l skills s h a r p , but m y journal allows m e to k e e p m y style f r e s h .

If only it w e r e so easy to f a c e the c a m e r a and s m i l e without slouching!

There is an alternative to being a starving college student

N o t a n o t h e r d i n n e r of M a c a r o n i a n d Cheese! I c a n ' t s t a n d it a n y m o r e ! I ' m going to die if 1 e a t this a g a i n ! " If t h e s e a r e the thoughts that run through your m i n d while you sit waiting for the w a t e r to boil, you a r e not alone. Many s t u d e n t s with a limited food budget find t h e m s e l v e s e a t i n g the s a m e inexpensive m e a l s night a f t e r night in o r d e r to pay for their tuition and books.

But t h e r e is a n a l t e r n a t i v e to being a " S t a r v i n g College Student. M Students who a r e not on a board plan should realize that t h e r e a r e w a y s to get food without shopping.

Students m u s t constantly be on the lookout for f r e e food on their college c a m p u s . S e m i n a r s a n d p r o g r a m s often include the wonderful w o r d s of salvation : ' ' R e f r e s h m e n t s S e r v e d . " It d o e s n ' t m a t t e r if you don't necessarily w a n t to listen to a s e m i n a r on " T h e Biology of T e m p e r a t e Species of N e t t l e s ; " just m a k e s u r e you stick a r o u n d for t h e cookies a n d punch. Also, keep in mind t h a t the college Food Service does not a l w a y s pick u p the leftovers i m m e d i a t e ly a f t e r the s e m i n a r s . This delay could m e a n a b a g full of donuts or cookies for you to bring h o m e and e n j o y at a l a t e r t i m e .

Another a l t e r n a t i v e to shopping is dining out. However, a s you m i g h t h a v e a l r e a d y suspected, you h a v e to find som e o n e else to p a y . S o m e t i m e s you c a n take a d v a n t a g e of your

friends. Other times you c a n hint to relatives. If your p a r e n t s c o m e up for a visit be s u r e to w e a r baggy clothes. Another trick is to suck in your cheeks, a d d i n g to t h e " a n e m i c look". If y o u r p a r e n t s get wise to this a c t , work on getting a f r e e m e a l out of your f r i e n d s ' relatives.

Opinion Activities Fee in Real Dollars

Editorial Student Activities Fee needs an increase Vision for the f u t u r e is something which any organization should have. Having the ability to progress through expansion or renewal of c u r r e n t p r o g r a m s is vital to any long t e r m improvement. Hope College has a recent history of anticipating its needs and preparing itself to deal with them. F o r example, during Calvin Vanderwerf's t i m e as President, Hope hired m a n y highly qualified faculty m e m b e r s in a period of a c a d e m i c expansion. Gordon Van Wylen's t e r m was m a r k e d by growth in the physical s t r u c t u r e s of the college. Both of these men s a w needs and worked to fulfill them before the situations b e c a m e critical. It is in all likelihood that when John Jacobson retires people will be able to pinpoint his successful focus and concern for the college as well.

T h e r e is one a r e a at Hope College which has fallen to the wayside in spite of this vision: the Student Acitivities budget. Currently, the various student organizations at Hope which rely on Student Congress for their funding a r e in a struggle to meet their needs. In particular, the s m a l l e r groups with minimal budgets a r e in danger of being cut off completely. Why has this situation arisen and how can we repair it?

Several y e a r s ago, the student activities at Hope were well funded and stable. The p r i m a r y element which changed this situation was the addition of WTHS to c a m p u s as a non-commercial FM radio station. Previously, a s WTAS, the station had functioned a s a campusonly station with a small budget. Equipment was inexpensive and easy to maintain and student needs from the station were simple.

Suddenly, once the initial cost of equipping an FM station w a s paid, Student Congress now had to maintain all equipment, help the station to grow and support a group that now required ten times its previous budget needs. Yet the Board of Trustees moved to keep the Student Fee constant.

In the m e a n t i m e , although the seed of the problem had already been sown, it grew progressively worse. In addition to ignoring the new station's budget needs, the Board also ignored inflation.

Although the trustees w e r e raising tuition to meet the rising inflationary costs of the school, they again ignored the student fee. Now student organizations a r e in a position where they cannot even afford to provide the events they h a v e always sponsored due to rising costs. Hopes for growth and expansion a r e minimal for exisiting groups.

While existing groups suffer through their concerns, new organizations a r e defeated in budget before they begin. Hope has responded a s a school to the realization that a m o r e multi-cultural approach will benefit the campus. Changes in the Student Development office, the Admissions office, and the addition of a Dean of Multi-Cultural Life have begun to p r e p a r e Hope for this emphasis.

However, no student groups to respond to this situation can develop unless there is funding to support them. The hands of Student Congress should not be tied in this m a t t e r .

Beyond the multi-cultural concerns, the realization that we live in a changing world of student interests is crucial a s well. Different fads and crazes a r e unavoidable a n d even welcome in a liberal a r t s community. The ability to respond to and support students in their interests is one which would m a r k Hope a s a progressive institution.

Instead, we have a student body that on the whole is apathetic and lethargic. P e r h a p s this is because we have lived with the s t a t u s quo for too long. While expanding their student activities such a s WTHS and looking to add more, Hope has moved n e a r the bottom of the G r e a t Lakes Collegiate Association's schools in t e r m s of student fee.

As the world changes around us, Hope must respond and keep up with new challenges that a r e presented in this process. T h e r e is no reason why the student activities that m a k e u p a significant p a r t of the liberal a r t s student's life should fall behind in this process. We, as students, m u s t e v a l u a t e our fiscal needs and act to m a k e sure they a r e met, both immediately and for the long t e r m . The problem can b e solved through the raising of the Hope College Student Activities Fee. Act now to encourage your Student Congress representative to vote for a Student F e e raise.

Thanksgiving Break. I didn't think I would m a k e it. It's been a long three months since I've been home and I'm m o r e than a little ready to return. I realize that this must be fascinating, but I do have a point (it m a y be under my hat, but at least it's there).

Anyway, this is the first day in a very long time I a m completely relaxed.

Stop for a moment and tell m e when the last time w a s that you were completely relaxed? Other than tonight, I c a n ' t honestly r e m e m b e r the last t i m e I was so relaxed. You know something?

That's sad. Not a boo-hoo sad, but the nostalgic s a d that is r e m e m b e r i n g your first girl or boyfriend. The kind of sad that reminds us that time is passing and yet there is a whole lot of life in front of us.

'Stop for a moment and tell me when the last time was that you were completely relaxed?'

All s e m e s t e r I've been either busting my r e a r or I've been zoned somewhere trying to recover what's left of my tattered personality. Today, though, everything is kind of all right. I like that phase; ''everything is kind of all r i g h t . " It isn't saying that I ' m intensely happy and the world is a wonderful place, but it's also not saying that I ' m sinking below the w a t e r s of a thousand c o m m i t m e n t s and responsibilities. It says that I ' v e still got a slew of daily stuff to and yet I'm not stressed. I c a n do it.

Maybe not on time or m a y b e earlier, but it really doesn't matter. I'll get it all done eventually.

What they don't realize is that my normal s t a t e of being this y e a r is tight and high strung.

In high school and Health Dy (I see a connection here), every time they m a d e us t a k e a stress test I always succeeded in scoring somewhere to the right of heart a t t a c k by 30 points or so. I used to be a Type A personality. I was always running around overachieving, being impatient and getting disgusted. After a while cynicism set in. Nothing was ever good enough. Can you dig it?

Than one day I changed. Instead of taking it all so seriously I s t a r t e d to get weird. People ask m e where I get m y column ideas.

I get them by filtering reality through m y dry funny bone. This world is funny. It doesn't intend to be, but s o m e w h e r e along the line it got cracked. I have a button f r o m a friend t h a t s a y s , 4II u s e d to be disgusted...Now I ' m just amuse d . " It s a y s it all.

Life is too funny to be wasted with a Type A personality. To replace the Type A I g a v e myself a Type M personality. M for Moron, M a d c a p , Magnificent, Mulligatawny (soup), Manicure,

U n f o r t u n a t e l y , this y e a r I forgot all about m y Type M per sonality. I bit off m o r e than I could m a s t i c a t e , er, m o r e than I could chew. Too m a n y tough classes, too m u c h reading (my kingdom for a MMMMath pro b l e m ) , too m a n y w r i t i n g assignments and just too much stressed time. To get it all done I s a n k b a c k into the characteristics of a Type A while wearing the m u s t a c h e of a Type M. Well, it's over now. I've had enough with Type A. This world is too bloody a-Musing to keep missing it (After all, what kind of world would invent ping pong?).

Watching P e t e r O'Toole in that wonderful, strait-jacket movie "My F a v o r i t e Y e a r , " I was reminded once again of how g r e a t a wee bit of insanity really is. O'Toole is Mad and it's so much fun. He also m a d e m e sad, I've done so m u c h this semester and missed so m u c h of the world.

But you know, I have a feeling things a r e going to be different now. After Thanksgiving I'll be back marvellously mellow....

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, there really a r e a lot of things that I ' m thankful for. But there a r e even m o r e things this year that T m not thankful for. â&#x20AC;˘ I'm not thankful for having two e x a m s in one day, right before Break ( I ' m sure I ' m not the only one).

- I'm not thankful for Public Safety's ticketing procedure. If a student p a r k s in a visitor's parking spot for ten minutes, watch out. But if a theatre-goer parks in DeWitt circle the night of a perf o r m a n c e (for several hours), public safety just drives by.

- I ' m not thankful for George Bush getting elected. Not that I d r a t h e r see Dan Quayle in his shoes - I'm not thankful for the long l i n e s w a i t i n g to u s e t h e microcomputers at the library and at VanderWerf. Since when a r e less than 20 c o m p u t e r s suitable for over 2,500 students?

- I'm not thankful for research papers. E v e r notice that all the books on Chivalry in Medieval L i t e r a t u r e a r e gone? not thankful for Holland

weather, particularily snow (I know, t h e r e ' s none on the ground yet, but I hate it a n y w a y ) .

- I'm not thankful for the Kletz (now known by s o m e a s " P h e l p s J r . " ) . The only t i m e lunch is really good a n y m o r e is on high school visitation days.

- On the s a m e note, I'm not thankful for visitation days. I hate high schoolers!

- I'm not thankful for sweaters, you know, those big, bulky E c u a d o r e a n s w e a t e r s they've been selling in DeWitt and the Maas Center...why a r e they there every week?

- I'm not thankful for sweet potatoes at Thanksgiving. Yuck, give m e stuffing and mashed potatoes any day.

Well, that just about covers it. 1 realize 1 seem a bit hateful, but I just got a parking ticket, waited in line to use the micros, and took two exams. Singing " R a w h i d e " in their Blues Brothers' dress, the Delta Phis captured the plaque at the 1988 All College Sing last Friday, beating out 15 other acts.

The C e n t u r i a n s , singing a h o m e m a d e version of "Nothing Dirty Going On Down H e r e , " f r o m the musical " T h e Best Little Whorehouse in T e x a s , " and the Alpha G a m m a Phis singing " L e a d e r of the P a c k " took second and third respectively.

emceed by comedian Rondell Sheridan who filled in the gaps between acts with stand-up comedy and jokes about m e m b e r s of the audience and hecklers, Sheridan kept the show moving and m a d e it m o r e interesting than it has been in the past.

After the show w a s over, there was some minor controversy in the audience about the judging.

Arts Edelson speaks on 'Psycho'

The film is very much like a trip through a funhouse," said Michael Edelson about Alfred H i t c h c o c k ' s 1959 m o v i e "Psycho" at a " F r i d a y Symposium" sponsored by the Hope Art Department.

Edelson's lecture was called "Psycho: A Look Behind the Shower Curtain *' Edelson compared the shower curtain to the audience's skin. Just a s the shower curtain is easily pulled away to reveal death so our skin is little protection from all the possible deaths in the world today. Hitchcok uses this motif to strike at fear in the audience.

"The optimum (phrase) with Hitchcock," Edelson said, "is point of view.' The c a m e r a becomes the audience; his world is a haunted house where spooks jump out at u s . " What the camera in a sense becomes is the audience. Edelson explained that the c a m e r a ' s angles force the audience to view the scenes a s the characters might.

For example, Edelson said in the movie the audience is Lilah.

Whatever Lilah sees, the c a m e r a moves as though it were her eyes. Her f e a r s become the audience's fears.

"People are voyeuristic," Edelson stated, " a n d c a n ' t help but look at the t r a u m a s of others." Using this belief, Hitchcock presents Norman Bates as an apparently a v e r a g e person who is actually a psychopath.

Edelson sees " P s y c h o " a s a look into "the mind of a psychopath."

A psychopath who is in all of us, Edelson suggested.

Norman Bates says, "We all go

a little m a d at times. Don't you?" Hitchcock plays on Norman's averageness to show the audience how little s e p a r a t e s them f r o m the unknown and in this case from the psychopath.

Norman later says, " W e ' r e all in our private t r a p , " a s if he were a d m i t t i n g his s c h i z o p h r e n i a when in actuallity, Edelson said, Hitchcock is reminding the audience that they could be Norman.

third of the way through the movie. Edelson explained that the first third of the movie seems to be intentionlly boring which makes " t h e shower scene" so much m o r e shocking.

"When you see the shower scene for the first time, it stays with you throughout the rest of the movie. You never quite trust (Hitchcock) after that; you're almost on the edge of your seat from then on," Edelson said.

Edelson said that her lie triggers in N o r m a n t h e guilt about murdering his own mother and her lover. At this point Miriam becomes Norman's mother and he needs to kill her again as herself (dressed as his mother).

T h e v o y e u r i s m t h e m e is crucial to the shower scene, Edelson said. In the office Norman moves a painting from the wall exposing a large hole with a smaller hole into the adjoining bathroom where Miriam is undressing. The two holes form an eye which Norman, by peering through, looks like a c a m e r a m a n which ties the audience further to the scene.

When Miriam is in the shower, the eye motif is continued in views of the open toilet bowl, the spraying showerhead, the loops of the shower curtain, the drain through which the blood flows down and the last two f r a m e s which show Miriam's dead eye.

The shower scene lasts 45 seconds and is m a d e of 78 different pieces of film. Disproving myths, Edelson had slide f r a m e s that showed a sideview of a breast and another of the tip of the knife piercing the stomach of the model playing Miriam in this scene. Other than this one f r a m e the knife is never shown to cut the flesh.

C o n t r a s t i n g the h o r r o r of "Psycho's " shower scene with the graphic violence of the "Friday the 13th" series, Edelson said, "You can supply with your mind much more gore than Hitchcock could ever be permitted to show you on the screen."

P l a y i n g solo or in p a i r s , Violinist Benny Kim, pianist J a i m e Bolipata and French hornist E r i c R u s k e p e r f o r m e d pieces by F r a n z Joseph Haydn, Vincent Perschitti and E d v a r d Grieg.

After a short intermission, the p e r f o r m e r s returned to the stage to blend the music of their instruments in "Trio in E b M a j o r , Op.40" by Johannes B r a h m s .

Before the concert, Bolipata explained that there would be a few changes from the p r o g r a m on which he elaborated, but which w e r e u n c l e a r to t h e layman. He started his solo piece on the g r a n d piano with a flourish and soon w a s taking the audience with him into the music. He played two short pieces by Haydn before he moved into his

"Sonato No. 21 in V Major.'' This closing piece of upbeat, lively, and quite enjoyable.

The second section of the concert had Bolipata playing his music in c o m p l e m e n t a r y fashion with Ruske's French horn. Ruske seemed to be having problems with s o m e part of his F r e n c h horn, but maintained his composure and filled the Chapel with the low wail of the horn. The high point of this duo was during the quiet, softly played middle section of the twentieth century work by Persichetti. The piano and F r e n c h horn seemed to blend together in an amazing fashion, even to the uneducated ear.

After the intermission all three took their positions and their ins t r u m e n t s ' music was blended and molded together into one sound. E a c h artist so finely played his music that it wrapped itself around the strains of the other two's music, filling the chapel with melody.

Bolipata, Kim and Ruske a r e all winners of the Young Concert Artist International Auditions and varied other a w a r d s . Kim has performed as concerto soloist with the St. Louis Symphony and Chicago Symphony.

Bolipata performed at the a g e of 13 with the Manila Symphony Orchestra in his native Phillippines. Ruske is the associate principal horn of the Cleveland Orchestra, as well as hornist with the Cleveland Octet

Deer s e a s o n , t i m e for grown m e n to t a k e a week off, go to a cabin in t h e m i d d l e of n o w h e r e and hunt f o r t h a t elusive 10-point.

I'd like to know if a n y b o d y e v e r shoots a 10-point b e c a u s e I ' v e never s e e n one. C o m e to think of it, I ' v e n e v e r seen a living

10-point either. 1 wonder if t h e r e really is such a thing. More likely it's just something invented in the h u n t e r ' s mind.

D e e r h u n t e r s a r e the only people who c a n rival f i s h e r m e n with stories about 44 the one t h a t got a w a y . " A typical d e e r h u n t e r story would s t a r t s o m e t h i n g like this: 4 , Hey J e b , you should h a v e seen this 10-point I got a shot off at t o d a y . " The next s t e p would be

Well, J e b now h a s to top this so he s t a r t s telling about a 14-point he got a shot off at in '76. This kind of thing continues until we get to the 30-point J e b ' s cousin s h o t 12 y e a r s a g o . 4 4 Y o u should've seen the neck on that o n e , " s a y s Jeb. Considering that most deer h u n t e r s simply sit in the cabin drinking b e e r , playing c a r d s and shooting the bull, these stories a r e really a m a z i n g .

1 used to think m y d a d w a s a poor shot b e c a u s e he a l w a y s c a m e home talking about all the deer he had seen, but he never had any s t r a p p e d to the c a r . I realize now t h a t the d e e r he h a d seen w e r e those t h a t looked in the window or poked their h e a d s in the door of the c a b i n a s the h u n t e r s w e r e involved in a serious poker g a m e .

T h e r e a r e two bas ic p r o b l e m s t h a t have to be o v e r c o m e if you intend to get a deer. F i r s t is that you have to actually hunt. No m a t t e r how m u c h your hunting p a r t n e r s laugh at you, you m u s t get up at 5 o'clock in the morning, bundle yourself up and go sit in your deerblind d u r i n g a blinding snowstorm. This is the only w a y to get your d e e r b e c a u s e the second problem is that deer a r e smart Deer figure t h a t nobody would be d u m b enough to get u p at 5 a . m . and go sit all alone in the middle of a driving blizzard, so t h a t ' s the only t i m e they c o m e out of hiding. Don't kid yourself, d e e r know when it's d e e r season.

Why else do you think you see t h e m all over the week b e f o r e season, but they d i s a p p e a r on the f i r s t day of hunting season? It's b e c a u s e they know.

The D e p a r t m e n t of N a t u r a l R e s o u r c e s t r i e s to even things out by issuing w h a t they call 44 doe p e r m i t s . " But lets f a c e it, t h e only person who would shoot a doe is a truly d e s p e r a t e h u n t e r .

Shooting a doe is like e a t i n g quiche; real men and real hunters simply don't do it. T h e only a c c e p t a b l e r e a s o n f o r shooting a doe is if you h a v e n ' t shot a deer in over four y e a r s .

Shooting a doe is a c c e p t a b l e under these conditions b e c a u s e you have to prove to yourself t h a t you can still shoot a gun a n d because you'll be m o r e e m b a r rassed by getting < 4 skunked" again than if you shoot a doe.

Generally though, shooting does is frowned upon After all, they may have a little Bambi somewhere.

If hunting s e a s o n p a s s e s and you didn't get your d e e r , t h e r e ' s one c h a n c e left. Michigan law allows you to k e e p your road-kill.

It's a c r u d e w a y of getting your deer, but generally effective. T h e only d r a w b a c k is t h a t you could total your c a r in hitting the d e e r , and a s y o u ' r e getting out to survey the d a m a g e t h e b l a s t e d thing will get u p a n d w a l k a w a y .

Only those skilled a t h u n t i n g with their c a r should e v e r t r y this technique.

Women's b-ball seeks sixth straight winning season HOLLAND - The Hope College women s basketball t e a m will be seeking a school-record sixth straight winning season during its 1988-89 c a m p a i g n w h i c h begins Saturday, Nov. 26 at Wheaton College in Illinois.

Coach Terri M c F a r l a n d h a s guided the Flying Dutch to three consecutive second place finishes in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association lMIAA). Her t e a m s h a v e posted an overall 47-25 record during that span.

The Flying Dutch r e t u r n seven players f r o m last y e a r ' s 14-9 squad which posted a 9-3 record against MIAA opponents for the second s t r a i g h t y e a r . Hope featured a balanced scoring at tack last y e a r as only one player averaged in double figures.

This y e a r s t e a m has only t^vo seniors on the pre-season roster Co-captain Amy W a r r i n e r , a 5'7" guard f r o m Greenville, led t h e MIAA in three-point b a s k e t s last season behind a 7.6 points p e r g a m e a v e r a g e while S h e r r y Martin of Onsted a v e r a g e d 5.1 points an outing.

Nienhuis, who missed six games due to injuries, a v e r a g e d 8 5 points a g a m e a s she shot 50 percent f r o m the floor and 84 percent from the f r e e throw line while Roeters scored at a 7.6 points per g a m e clip and w a s second behind g r a d u a t e d DeeAnn Knoll in rebounds at 5.8 per contest.

This y e a r ' s roster is one of the largest in the history of Hope w o m e n ' s b a s k e t b a l l with 16 freshmen and 11 others joining the veterans in pre-season drills.

The first home action will come the weekend of Dec. 2-3 when the Flying Dutch host the Great Lakes Colleges Association tournament.

The Dutchmen have long been considered the t e a m to beat in the MIAA basketball r a c e , winning seven of the eight championships in the '80s. This y e a r , however, the Dutch will play in the underdog role. Hope r e t u r n s eight lettermen f r o m last y e a r ' s c h a m p i o n s h i p t e a m , but t h e team lacks experienced frontline players.

Hope lost to g r a d u a t i o n twotime MIAA most valuable player Matt Strong. Also lost through graduation were v e t e r a n s J i m Klunder, Todd M a r s m a n , and Bill Vanderbilt. Last y e a r , these four averaged 53 of the t e a m ' s 89 points per g a m e and two-thirds of the t e a m ' s rebounds.

The t e a m r e t u r n s m u c h talent, however, as seniors J a c k Holman, Greg Mitchell and Tim V a n L i e r e all a r e r e t u r n i n g .

Holoman, a 6'4" g u a r d and forward, s t a r t e d all but one g a m e last y e a r and w a s t h e t e a m leader in three point b a s k e t s (40

and 82). Holman a v e r a g e d 10.3 points per g a m e . Mitchell is this y e a r ' s captain, and a s last y e a r ' s most effective outside shooter.

M i t c h e l l h a d a 55 p e r c e n t a v e r a g e f r o m three-point r a n g e and a v e r a g e d 5.8 points per game. The 6 , 3" guard a n d forward also committed 12 turnovers in 27 g a m e s . VanLiere, a 6'2" guard and f o r w a r d , shot 51 percent from the floor last y e a r .

Also returning is point g u a r d Eric Elliott. The 5,10,, sophomore s t a r t e d in 22 g a m e s last year, and led the t e a m in assists (98) and f r e e throw shooting (83 percent).

Other returning l e t t e r m e n a r e e ' l " g u a r d Justin George, 6'3" junior forward Dan Klunder, and 6'6" center Bruce VanderKolk.

The returning l e t t e r m e n plus the fact that there a r e 29 players other than letterwinners seeking berths on the varsity and j.v. teams m a k e the chances of coach Glenn VanWieren having another winning season a p p e a r pretty good. Van Wieren is only 17 victories f r o m his 200th c a r e e r win.

Hope's next g a m e is November 26 against Concordia College.

Student Congress Minutes Congress President Tom Kyros and Congress Comptroller Bruce Brown reported on the progress of the two public safety consultants irom MSU hired by the college concerning the c r i m e problem Currently, one is working with relations between Public Safety and the community while the other is working with Hope's administration.

Representative Paul Webster reported for the Library Committee, saying that 16 new faculty study carols will be installed in the Van Wylen Library. The committee also spoke of increasing library use by establishing new educational library p r o g r a m s through f r e s h m a n orientation, dorm orientation, d e p a r t m e n t orientation or the English 113 classes.

The Women's Studies Committee expressed the need to hire a part-time coordinator to serve a s an organizer and a s a teacher of women's issues on campus. The committee is also looking into hiring a speaker.

Representative J o n a t h a n Hoffman reported on the m a n y issues of the Campus Life Board. Problems with Greek pledging were discussed. The Greeks will enforce their own insurance policy this spring. The board is planning on submitting commission s t a t e m e n t s to each of the c o m m i t t e e s under the Campus Life a r e a . In addition, Bruce Brown spoke briefly about increasing the student activities fee next school y e a r . Dean Bekkering also talked abut happenings in the Student Development office.

Representative Brad Votava relayed to Congress the decision of the Curriculum Committee to drop the Recreation m a j o r because of the lack of interest.

Representative Amy G u m p told Congress that the Religious Life Committee worked on developing a list of strengths and weaknesses of the religions life at Hope college. The Chaplain's office was considered a strength while interaction between students and faculty was considered a weakness.

Representative Kathy Tan spoke of the strong c o m m i t m e n t being m a d e by the Multi-Cultural Life Committee to review the facultyhiring practice of Hope College.

Representative Robin Gorter reported that the Residential Life committee is currently looking at the quality and rules of Hope College's dining hall, living units and Public Safety.

Although the actions of the Student Standing and Appeals Committee a r e confidential. Congress President Tom Kyros did s t a t e that one student appeal w a s acted upon this week.

Old Business: Representative Erika Anderson submitted a complete propsal c r e a t e d to change the c u r r e n t parietal hours.

There was much discussion on this proposal; m a n y Congress m e m b e r s felt that some student support of the proposal might actually be apathetic votes. The proposal was later unanimously passed. It will now move on to the Residential Life Committee.

Seven Congress m e m b e r s volunteered to serve on the committee responsible for organizing the Greek leadership conference at Hope this spring.

Brown brought up the possible increase of the activities fee. The fee is currently .55 percent of tuition. Some feel that the fee should be raised to improve the student organizations and provide m o r e benefits. Brown also pointed out that most schools in the a r e a receive two to three times more from their activities fees than Hope Feedback from Congress m e m b e r s was mixed. Most stated that they weren't s u r e whether students were knowledgeable of how the funds a r e used. Many expressed concern about students being able to pay additional money The meeting was adjourned at 10 p.m.

The next meeting will be held in the Maas Conference Room on December l. 1988 at 9 p.m.
