Hatred Caused Death of John Kennedy by Robert Donia A great man was assassinated last Friday. The assassin was a communist sympathizer who was probably insane. We a r e tempted to dismiss him as an isolated case—just a crazy, frustrated fanatic. But it is disturbing to recount t h e recent incidents that have been instigated by such fanatics of both the left and the right: two persons died in riots at the University of Mississippi last y e a r ; four Negro children were killed when a church in Birmingham,- Alabama, was bombed: hearings of the House Committee on Un-American Activities have -been disrupted by rowdy demonstrators on several occasions; our ambassador to the UN- was jostled and attacked by pickets in Dallas a few weeks ago; and finally, our President was assassinated by a comunist sympathizer. Such a rash of events does not happen by pure coincidence and it has taken an assassination to wake the nation up to this fact. It is lime we examine the cause of such in.sanc acts. In all of these events, one elem e n t was always present: hatred. It is natural in every society to
have a few people who c a r r y hatred to extremes. But the truth is that our society is actually encouraging hatred and that hatred is even popular in our day. Extremists of both the left and the right a r e encouraged in their hate by the irresponsible deeds of public officials and supposedly responsible organizations. The governor-elect of Mississippi was elected to that office on the basis of his "hate Kennedy" campaign. A national magazine recently ran an article saying that Earl Warren should be hanged. Certain conservative clergymen, in advocating a return to more fundamentalist theology, have generated more hate for their Christian bretheren than they have love for Jesus Christ. Even some otherwise highly ethical leaders of the Negro movement have on occasion stooped to expressions of personal hatred for those who honestly disagree with them. J e s u s Christ c a m e 2,000 y e a r s ago to remove the hatred f r o m our hearts and replace it with love. It is a sad commentary on us as Christians that we tolerate and even support the bitter hatred present in our society today.
There a r e people on this campus who hold views that contribute to this public hatred; these people had better re-examine their consciences, for that hatred is largely responsible for the death of our President. It is time that we stop encouraging this bitterness and hatred from both the right and left and elevate American public life above the level of personal attacks— whether physical or verbal—upon our leaders. There is an important place for criticism in democracy, but there is no need to attack personally the person being criticized. Our Democratic Creed demands that we respect those with whom we disagree. Christ even demands that we love our opponents. Any person who cannot stick to the issues, instead of reverting to expressions of hatred, does not deserve to be in public office. We need to throw out those leaders who preach hatred and we need to take personal responsibility for sending them into retirement. Until this is done, America can expect to continue reaping the bitter harvest of hatred's current popularity.
