y a p Just the Beginning The beginning of each new school year brings many emotions to different people. New students leave the comfort of home for the first time, returning students catch up with old friends, and the Senior class starts the "beginning of the end" of their four years at Hope College. Take the time to view and reflect on the images collected in this, the 78th volume of the Milestone. We have tried to capture the essence of you, showing just how vital and active a place Hope College is. This is your invitation to remember the highlights of the 1995 school year. EVENTS

"Fall" in the SAC This past fall drew record crowds to many Social Activities Committee events. To start off the year, SAC hosted a Labor Day Picnic in the Pine Grove, featuring tye dying and the Russian Folk and Roll band, LIMPOPO. Winants Auditorium had many sold-out performances, especially during the showing of movies like "Jurassic Park" and "The Lion King". Homecoming moved a bit off the beaten path this year, as SAC sponsored a Hayride Hodown at Tusink's Farm. Students went on hayrides, went through a haybarrel maze, and even learned a few country line dances. "A Good Run of Bad Luck" appeared as the fourth annual Casino Night, where students packed their pistol to come try their luck at the card tables. All of this hard work payed off for the committee, as they were nominated for the 1995 N A C A Associates' Choice Award for outstanding programming organization.

Extensions of Hope Years ago, students were welcomed to Hope College as they passed through the "gate" on College Avenue in front of Graves Hall. At one time, the campus was restricted to that space; but with the tremendous growth in the past decades, we have spread our wings to include a new library, science center and math and business buildings. Yet, the growth of the college hasn't stopped there. We now have the Knickerbocker Theatre and the Art Annex located on 8th Street that are Hope owned and run. And just this^ past fall were the ribbon cutting ceremonies for the new DeWitt Tennis Center down on Fairbanks. But we haven't quit yet. This |3astj spring began a one year project that will result in a new residence hall/conference center on 10th Street. The continued growth of the student body will only result in e r e a t e i ^ x t e n s i o n ^ f ^ u H community.

A b^ason to Remember Hope athletes enjoyed unprecedented success this winter, winning every conference championship and earning national recognition in record numbers. Championship trophies were garnered in men's and women's basketball and men's and women's swimming, marking the first time in MIAA history that one college has finished on top of every sport in a season. And talk about sweeps! The most valuable MIAA player in every sport was from Hope (shown in the picture). It was a "milestone" season in many regards. Both basketball teams defeated rival Calvin three times! Glynn Van Wieren became the winningest coach in Hope basfoall history and was selected Great Lakes Sch of the Year. The 1994-1995 winter sports season will long be remembered by all. *

Dazed and Confused

Sara VanderLink and Sara Stephen battle for the best before being flung back into place while trying their hand at the Bungee Run.

While trying to wrap up another year at Hope College, students were able to cure being dazed and confused with medicine provided by SAC at Spring Fling 1995. Classes were dismissed in the early afternoon allowing students to enjoy the food and festivities held in the Pine Grove. A picnic served by creative dining gave students the energy to become a kid again or become a circus acrobat as they enjoyed games like the Ball Crawl, AcroBungee, Sumo Wrestling, Bouncy Boxing and the ever popular Bungee Run. As day turned to chilly night, activities moved to the Civic Center where all enjoyed hilarious comedian Adam Ferrara and the spectacular sounds of The Fabulous Flashbad^i ^ t u a e n t s laughed and twisted themselves into a weekend of studying before final exams. m

PERSONALITIE HIS IS MY ANCHOR OF Hope for the future of the people." ~A.C. Van Raalte Milestone invites you to a lesson of history, the history of Hope College. # Each building is different in personality, complementing each other because of their distinguishing characteristics. • An education is not just learning about the present, but under standing the past and celebrating where we are today. # W e hope you enjoy the incredible story to follow, i

A modest

TART I n 1847, citizens f r o m the Netherlands created settlements in Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and Ohio. One year later, "Holland" Michigan platted as a "village". K n o w i n g the success of the settlement depended upon the education of it inhabitance, the Reverend A.C. Van Raalte donated a tract of land in 1850. Later to be

k n o w n as "The Five Acres", the small plot was designated to become a site for "The Academy". In 1851, "The Pioneer School", the first educational institution in the new settlement, formally opened, and two years later was to be controlled by the General Synod of the Reformed Church in America. It was just four

short years later that this building. Van Vleck Hall erected on "The Five Acres". At that time. Van Vleck Hall was the total college, housing dorms. classrooms, the chapel, the library, and administrative offices. Currently, Van Vleck Hall houses both Freshmen and Sophomore women within its historic walls.

And with the growth in people had to come the growth of the institution. In 1859, "The Five Acres" enlarged to 16 acres and was designated "The College Campus". Philip Phelps, Jr. was elected as the first

president of Hope College, and today John H. Jacobson sits in his place as the 10th president of the college. Growth had its benefits. The Charter of Incorporation as a College of Liberal Arts was granted to Hope in 1866 by the State of Michigan, leading to the First Annual Commencement in the schools history. Some years past.

recitals. The pipe organ located in the balcony of the chapel is a Dutch Tracker Organ, brought over seas from the Netherlands. The balcony also displays the beautiful "Rose Window", a delicate stainglass work of art presented as a gift f r o m the g r a d u a t i n g Class of 1916. Soon a f t e r the foundation of the college, chapel services

were held three times a week. Attendance was mandatory, and if you were absent or tardy you were disciplined. But times have changed. This year marked the re-birth of the chapel service. The optional services held three times a week are alive and full of energy, (thanks to the work of a wonderful new staff) and seeing more students and faculty than ever before.

Learning in the

LOFT A

nother president of Hope College was elected in 1945. Dr. Irwin J. Lubbers shared with his students that "It is my firm conviction that Hope College can serve this day and generation only by inculcating upon young lives those virtues and values which have been the hallmarks of the Chris-

tian scholar." L u b b e r s Hall was formerly known as the science building, as the engravings on the outer perimeters show. It was later renamed Lubbers Hall after our seventh president. Today, Lubbers embodies the social sciences and humanities, as well as the communica-

tion department which through its TV studio is able to produce cable shows for the Holland area. Lubbers Loft is often used as a meeting place for faculty, and students occassionally have literary readings there as well.

Living to

LEARN T h e early 1970's brought yet a n o t h e r president to office. In 1972, Gordon J. Van Wylen was elected ninth president of the campus. As he saw it, "The mission of Hope College is to offer, with recognized excellence, academic programs in liberal arts, in the setting of an undergraduate, residential coeducational college and in the context of the

Christian faith." To f u r t h e r the academic excellence of the institution, the Van Wylen Library was built and completed in January of 1988. This facility holds over 265,000 volumes under its roof, as well as the archives of the City of Holland. Also developed for our new study space was the "Anchor Chair", made to increase produc-

tivity and keep blood circulation moving while trying to study. The chair pivits, anchoring either on its front or back. Students are even able to easily access copy machines, bathrooms, elevators and reference librarians simply by locating the "blue" wall on each floor.

One last

LOOK T a k e one last look at the lOth Street block between College Avenue and Columbia as you know it. The spring of 1995 began the transformation of the Hope College look. The Admissions house, which was completed in 1988 will be the only remaining building on the street. Most of the other houses will be relocated to an-

other spot on campus, such as "greek row" for the Arcadian's, Kappa Chi's and Emersonian's. The Chaplain's Office (Keppel Guest House) will be moved to a new lot as well, and some of the remaining houses may be torn down. But what is all the commotion about? It is the ground breaking of the new Haworth Conference Center.

The new facility, scheduled for occupancy in the fall of 1996, will be both an upscale residence hall (able to house 272 students) and a yearround conference center, an inn able to accommodate vistors in 50 guest rooms.

IVE HAGUE I.VE League for leadership, a group of almost 60 women - both students and staff - was established to provide leadership training for Hope College women students. The group set goals to focus on leadership development, increase visibility of women on campus and to become action-oriented. Each student participated in their own leadership development by giving inout and time in the planning of at least one I.VE League project or program during the academic year. Membership criteria are simple. Each w o m e n is asked to display commitment, involvement and attendance at each event and show strong leadership potential - an interest in learning about leadership and becoming a stronger leader in a variety of situations.
