Birckala 1017

Pajari’s Men

In World War II, most soldiers from the Northern Ostrobothnia region served in forces commanded by Major General A.O. Pajari, who was awarded the Mannerheim Cross twice. In the Winter War, they fought in Tolvajärvi, and the Continuation War saw them fight on the Karelian isthmus. The Pajari’s Men exhibition tells the stories of how the men experienced the war – its horrors and long-lasting camaraderie – in their own words.

It was the time of the Vikings. In the village of Tursia, people cultivated the land, traded, made sacrifices to the gods, and ate large amounts of pork. Both the Vikings and the Novgorodians sought the riches of the Häme wilderness; however, one small village of indomitable Häme folk still held out against the enemy... To celebrate the centennial of Finnish independence, the Birckala 1017 exhibition allows visitors to travel through time and visit a village in Northern Häme a millennium ago. You will get to know smithing skills, about cooking outdoors, and the principles that guided life for the Finns of the past. This exhibition offers plenty to see, do and learn for the whole family.

EXHIBITIONS 28 April – 28 May 2017

Vapriikki celebrates the 50-year-old Haihara Doll Museum with the exhibition called The Doll Ball.

Rupriikki showcases media history that you, I, and others know. The exhibition Messages from Pirkanmaa focuses on the development of mass communication, including newspapers, radio, television, and even digital games. Networked Humanity is a story of networking that is becoming more and more total every day.

The doll museum first opened its doors in the henhouse of Haihara Manor in 1966, when lady of the manor Mrs. Gunvor Ekroos (1907–1982) wanted to share her collection with the public. After decades in Haihara Manor and Hatanpää Manor, the doll collection finally ended up being displayed in Museum Centre Vapriikki.

Tampere Mineral Museum The Tampere Mineral Museum displays the interesting world of stones and minerals. The displays give priority to impressive, colorful stones, and the museum showcases both cut and raw precious stones and gemstones, ornamental stones, stones used in construction, and synthetic stones. Samples of minerals, ores, and metals are also on display, as are meteorites and fossils, such as dinosaur eggs.

9 June – 29 October 2017 The Remarkable Adventure with Stamps exhibition will inspire children aged between 5 and 12 to have a handson experience of philately. They can try out various tasks related to stamp collecting. The activities introduce visitors to the imagery of Finnish stamps such as animals, means of transportation, sports and comics.

The Remarkable Adventure with Stamps will also be open at the international philatelic exhibition Finlandia 2017 to be held at the Tampere Hall between 24 and 28 May 2017.

The Postal Museum offers a wonderful experience for the entire family and invites everyone to explore. The Messengers exhibition takes visitors on a tour of the long history of postal and communications services from the 1600´s up to today. See the quaint living quarters of a peasant farmer whose job it was to deliver mail, the stormy Sea of Åland, workrooms of famous Finnish artists and hear touching stories from the war years. Wake up the sleeping postmaster, peek into a telescope to find stamps on the world map, ride a talking mail horse, study postal routes or become engrossed in nostalgic films.

17 November 2017 – 4 November 2018

The exhibition will show rarities from Queen Elizabeth’s collection for the first time in Nordic countries. It will feature rare essays and proofs of the first stamps and postal stationery (1840). There will also be some wellknown first stamps from the Commonwealth such as the blue Two Pence Post Office Mauritius stamp, which is thought to be one of the most valuable stamps in the world. Rarities exhibited from the Postal Museum’s own collections will include Finland’s first stamps, the 5 and 10 kopek stamps issued in 1856, and postal stationery from 1845. Some of the exhibits are unique and others so rare there are only very few examples in the world.

It will be 40 years since punk came to Finland. The Fanzines and Punk Mail exhibition will feature phenomena that arrived with punk. 1977 saw a surge of alternative magazines and this also marked the start of a culture of DIY ethic, which is still strong today. A number of interesting and influential magazine-makers and punk rockers from the past and present will be included. Exchanging punk letters and punk records with fans in the USA and the UK were part of the internationalisation process for many young people. The letters also spread the word about Finnish punk bands abroad. The exhibits will include photos, punk letters and other punk-related material, and visitors can read alternative magazines and listen to singles and tapes.
