This exhibition that lights up the winter darkness starts outside, in the Vapriikki yard, and is part of the International Year of Light 2015.

TIME TO PLAY The Time to Play exhibition, on the history of toys and play, presents toys from Finland and abroad, companions of children in Finland both past and present. What were your favourite toys? Perhaps they were the challenging Meccano sets, beautiful Barbie dolls, or cuddly teddy bears? Or would you like to see dolls of the kind that your grandmother used to play with, or have a reunion with the Masters of the Universe who ruled your living room in the 1980s? This exhibition displays about 500 toys.

MEDIA MUSEUM RUPRIIKKI From 15 October 2015 Rupriikki showcases media history that you, I, and others know. The exhibition Messages from Pirkanmaa focuses on the development of mass communication, including newspapers, radio, television, and even digital games. Networked Humanity is a story of networking that is becoming more and more total every day. The Gaming Man is an exhibition on the long history of games and playing.

INNOVATIONS Innovations is an exhibition and research project focusing on the past and present of local technical know-how. Tampere has good reason to be proud of its technological prowess. Many well-known technical devices first entered use here, and this city has also been quick to apply technologies developed elsewhere, for its own needs. Displayed is the history of the metal industry and engineering work, modern IT research, and medical technology. The exhibition also sheds light on the roots of Nokia Corporation and its significance in the Tampere region.

DO YOU KNOW THE TYPE? The Curious World of Typefaces 1 September – 4 October 2015 The Do You Know the Type? exhibition looks behind the letters, at the history of typefaces and modern typography.

TAMMERKOSKI OF SIX ARTISTS The museum restaurant Valssi arranges conference meals, coffee, breakfasts and reception catering according to the clients’ wishes. A magnificent view of the industrial redbrick scenery along the Tammerkoski rapids opens from the restaurant’s summer terrace, built above running water.

24 September 2015 – 10 January 2016 The flowing water of the Tammerkoski rapids and the urban scenery of the bridges joining the two parts of the city have inspired artists to contribute to our exhibition on this environment of significant cultural value. The exhibited works of graphic, textile, and photographic art combine the here and now with fragments of history. Exhibition is executed in cooperation with Photographic Centre Nykyaika.

TAMPERE MINERAL MUSEUM

THE SHOE MUSEUM

The Tampere Mineral Museum displays the interesting world of stones and minerals. The displays give priority to impressive, colourful stones, and the museum showcases both cut and raw precious stones and gemstones, ornamental stones, stones used in construction, and synthetic stones. Samples of minerals, ores, and metals are also on display, as are meteorites and fossils, such as dinosaur eggs.

The Shoe Museum tells the story of shoes in Finland. In the factory room, you can follow the individual stages in the industrial manufacture of the shoe, from the design table to the finished product. Authentic films take you into the world of a busy shoe factory. Ankle boots, sandals, or boots: everyone will find a favourite in the procession of a thousand shoes. The Shoe Museum exhibition will close on 6 September 2015.

THE TAMMERKOSKI RAPIDS AND THE STORY OF TAMPERE The Tammerkoski Rapids exhibition tells the story of how a small village grew into an industrial city now known for technological innovation, high-standard cultural offerings, and its residents’ modest and down-to-earth attitude as expressed in a popular local saying: 'Let's not make a fuss now.' The exhibition presents lives of Tampere residents from different eras via short glimpses and cartoons. A much-loved miniature model of Tampere in 1890 gives the visitor an idea of the town’s development over time.

2015

TAMPERE 1918 The Tampere 1918 exhibition depicts the events that took place in Tampere in the spring of 1918. Perspectives are offered by the fighters on both sides, but civilians and onlookers are not overlooked either. The exhibition presents a large cross-section of society at war, from children and old people to workers and factory managers.

In the Middle Ages, almost all Christians made at least one pilgrimage in the course of their lifetime. The exhibition explains how it was possible for an ordinary Finn to leave everything behind to go on a pilgrimage through Europe in the Middle Ages. How were the trips organised, what equipment was needed, and where did the pilgrims spend their nights? What was it like to travel on the mediaeval roads, what happened once the pilgrims reached their destination, and what did they bring home with them from their travels?

Come and experience the history of ice hockey at the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame! In addition to Finnish ice hockey, the exhibition focuses on international ice hockey and Finnish hockey players who have shot to international fame. In addition to an authentic Canada Cup and World Championship trophies, the exhibition features numerous other trophies. Highlights, disappointments, and period pieces are offered by rich film material. You are also welcome to test your own scoring skills on a scoring simulator!

SPORT IDOLS

Who’s the king of the forest? Do you know which berries and mushrooms are edible and which are poisonous? What happens in the wild at night? The new section of the Natural History Museum that is due to open in the spring will double the exhibition area. The new section focuses on many new natural phenomena that the visitors have wanted to see at the museum and takes an exploratory approach that is engaging for all the senses.

28 March 2014 – 1 March 2015 The museum displays an exhibition on Finns' sporting idols and Finnish fan culture.

MASKS 5 March 2015 – 13 March 2016 Mask-maker Joni Hallikainen’s collection of historic masks will go on display for the first time ever. The collection consists of such items as millimetre-precise copies of NHL masks from decades past.

After completing its mediaeval journey, the exhibition turns its focus to modern pilgrimages. Modern day pilgrims are invited to share their photos, memories, and experiences.

The artefacts include souvenirs brought home by mediaeval Finnish pilgrims, relics, and statues of saints from churches. Objects of this kind are rare in Finland, and the exhibition benefits from loans from the national museums of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. A number of brilliant artefacts from the British Museum also make clear what great riches pilgrims may have encountered on their travels in Europe.

Vapriikki is housed in the old Tampella factory hall, whose oldest sections date back to the 1880s. The large exhibition hall, a hundred metres long and 16 metres high, was built in the 1910s–1920s. Vapriikki opened to the public in 1996, and the building was fully ready as a museum in 2000. The total floor area of the museum centre is approximately 14,000 m2, half of which is devoted to exhibition facilities and premises open to the public.

The exhibition follows the pilgrims’ ritual journey to places of pilgrimage in Finland and the rest of the Nordic region and further afield, to the far reaches of the known world – Rome, Santiago de Compostela, and even Jerusalem.

With a picturesque location beside the Tammerkoski rapids, Vapriikki is a museum centre that offers things to see and do for the whole family. We host about a dozen exhibitions each year, with varied themes, including history, technology, and natural sciences. Vapriikki is also home to the Natural History Museum of Tampere, the Mineral Museum, the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame, the Shoe Museum, the Doll Museum and the Postal Museum. Our visitors are also served by museum restaurant Valssi and the Vapriikki museum shop, which offers a wide selection of books, gifts, and souvenirs.

The fresh designs, bright colours, and elegant cuts showcase high quality and the timeless nature of good design. Gorgeous fashion shots form an impressive element of the exhibition. They reflect the changing idea of womanhood in these designers’ time: a Revontuli woman was modern and bold, playful yet elegant.

In the 1960s, the textile manufacturer Suomen Trikoo wanted to explore the world of design. For this purpose, the company needed an elegant export collection and a skilful leading figure. The Revontuli brand was built by Lenita Airisto, alongside textile artist Nana Suni and fashion designer Anna-Liisa Nieminen. The design collection was launched in Finland, other Nordic countries, and the United States in 1966.
