foreword The Liberian Art and Crafts Society (LACS) is a non-profit group established in 2014 to make art one of the priorities in Liberia’s national development agenda; its purpose is to empower local artists by organising public events to display Liberian art at home and abroad. Because of the loss of prominence held by the arts - in both the traditional and the contemporary forms of expression - during the conflict years (1980 - 2003) and the absence of a policy for art education, our rich heritage risks disappearing. This COLORING BOOK FOR LIBERIAN PRE-SCHOOLS AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS was designed and produced by LACS to address the inadequacy of relevant materials on the local market. Emphasis on art development in schools at the formative stage will impact social, physical, mental and creative development of the population - and the development of a national identity - hence contributing to the National Agenda for Transformation and Sustainable Development. Children can express themselves through words and the medium of art. Coloring, meanwhile, brings out their creative personality and allows them to express
thoughts about their perceptions of life and their emotions (happiness and satisfaction, or something disturbing that needs urgent attention). The coloring book will, among other things: - Develop and strengthen the hand muscles which later help during activities like lifting objects. - Help kids hold the writing tool correctly and improve their handwriting. - Expose them to boundaries while learning to write. - Develop hand and eye coordination. - Teach the skill of patience and to be relaxed and comfortable; while creating a piece of art - Develop better concentration and focus skills. - Help kids recognize line, perspective, color, hue, shape, form, and patterns. - Help kids to decide which colors to use. - Enrich their vocabulary. - Make learning relevant (with objects from their own environment).
