Locales Greg Hollingsworth a.k.a.

FRANK THE TANK A southern import to the East Midlands, Greg arrived in town with stories of a checkered past and a childhood of semipro skateboarding. What was instantly noticeable - aside from his strong Southampton linguistics - was his commitment to skateboarding as his biggest passion. Smashing into the local comps in Nottingham & Derby, “powerhouse Greg” became a regular face down at the old Notts DIY, and a firm advocator of the #sneintonlife. We headed out with him on plenty of missions over the past year or two to capture some stunts ‘n that. All photos by Tom Quigley, Nottingham.

Portraits: Tom Quigley, 2017.

Most go into the fence, Greg prefers the hard way. Backside boardslide. Tom Quigley, 2017. Narrow as fuck run up for a gap to road. Tom Quigley, 2017.

“I don’t know how I even ollied it...” - Upon second inspection, this spot isn’t a spot.

Front smith on the skinniest rail Radcliffe has to offer. Tom Quigley, 2017.

No-go on the rails, so Greg’s 5-0 had to be put to use on the picnic benches. Tom Quigley, 2017.

“This one, yeah?” A sunny crook on New Year’s Day. Tom Quigley, 2018.

Blunt pull in on a mission up the A52. Tom Quigley, 2017.

The remaining Broady bank may have been covered in sandpaper, but the new run up is a big help for this backside flip. Tom Quigley, 2017.

The big drop over this tiny wall didn’t faze Greg. Lying on the floor of this car park did worry the guy that drove past me though... Tom Quigley, 2017.

east Midlands missions Chris Johnson Sidewalk legend CJ tells us the stories behind a few of his favourite visits to the East Midlands.

Nick Roberts - 5050 - Belper, 2011. One thing I’ve always loved about working for Sidewalk is the random and the comical situations that you constantly end up in. I’d been to this school in Belper a few months prior with Geoff Rowley and AVE whilst they were in the primary stages of filming for the then untitled Vans video. Having bore witness to AVE manhandle a boardslide through the kinks of the nipple high monstrosity, Darren Pearcy and myself knew that we needed to get Nick back there as we were trying to wrap up his Haunts interview. I remember that winter had well and truly set in and the forecast was grim! We got ourselves over the prison-like fence that surrounds the playground and a lengthy battle ensued. At a point where I thought he’d lost the amount of energy and hype and with the light almost gone, Nick powered through the last kink of the rail and rolled away!

Kris Vile - gap 5050 - Leicester, 2016. If you know Kris Vile, then you’ll know what he’s capable of on a skateboard. This particular spot was found whilst he was making his way from Leicester train station to link up with Ryan Price, Callun Loomes and myself who were shooting on a Friday evening. Once Ryan had landed his trick, we headed straight back to this spot, wrenched the BT cover up. There’s a certain AVE quality to the shapes in this mid flight backside 5050. Luckily landed without any contact with that bloody fence….

Sam “SPT” Taylor - frontside flip - Leicester, 2008. A few weeks before this I had met Sam at the Boardroom Comp and with MySpace still being a thing, we arranged to meet up at Casino (the now defunct Leicester skate shop) and try and get some street photos for his First Light. I had just got a Canon 5D (the original and first affordable full frame Canon DSLR) and was just getting to grips with it. The light was fading fast and I fumbled my Sun Pak flashes into place before he landed this ultra tight frontside flip. This photo never actually made print but a sequence we shot that day made up part of his First Light.

C

Charlie Monroe - crook - Leicestershire, 2014. This is in my top three ‘What The Fuck’ moments from the past decade or so. We met Charlie and Callun at the skatepark near this rail on a Sunday morning. From what I can remember, Charlie hadn’t had much sleep and was still feeling effects of the night before. He’d already filmed this so I was thinking he’d probably just get into a few crooks, we’d get the photo and get outta there. If you’ve paid any attention to his skating over the past five years then you’ll know he doesn’t fuck about! No posing, no bullshit, he landed this crook within a few tries. And, that’s a wooden rail…

Callun Loomes - front shuv - Leicester, 2013. We can’t have a feature about the East Midlands and not have this dude in here! The relentless efforts of this guy have put countless dudes on the map, linked them to sponsorship and always given us at Sidewalk the heads up on when and where things are happening in that part of the country. This photo was shot for his Producers feature in Sidewalk a few years ago. Anyone that’s been to this thing will know how sketchy it is! Props to Mr Loomes on all that he’s done and continues to do through the Get Lesta videos.

C

Geoff Rowley - noseblunt slide - Kirkby-in-Ashfield, 2011. In 2011, during the early days of filming for the then untitled Vans project that would become Propeller, Geoff Rowley, Anthony Van Englen and Greg Hunt paid a visit to the UK. The plan was to start in Liverpool so Geoff could film some stuff on hallowed ground and then head to London via anywhere we could think of in between. That in between was Nottingham and Derby.

G

This noseblunt was fucking rad! It was full speed and popped in with pure Rowley steeze. Yeah, I might have kicked a few of those cans and bottles in there to make Kirkby look even more grim and desolate. This trick didn’t make his video part but the photo was featured in the joint Geoff and AVE magazine feature a few months later (AVE had the cover at the Car Wash spot in Nottingham and the footage is in his Propeller RAW Files clip. Search it out online).
