Deep in rural Leicestershire, Melton Mowbray’s Milk Skateshop had just celebrated its 5th year in business, before bigger opportunities took owners Rob & Alex overseas to Canada. Their busy and productive 2016 saw them running the shop, organising skatepark comps, and even taking the time to put together a shop team, who we caught up with this year ripping around the East Midlands.

What do you skate for?

I skate for Milk...

“We’ve always tried to hook up locals and regular customers with discount & free stuff but we’ve never had a proper shop “team”. I was keen to hook up guys who had lost their local shop like Hugh in Kettering, or didn’t have one to begin with like Jazz in Uppingham.” Jazz Wade - nosegrab slasher, Melton Mowbray. Tom Quigley, 2016.

Callum Thompson kickflip, Nottingham. Tom Quigley, 2016. “Joe Hinson recommended Callum (no relation to Hugh!) for the shop team and sent me over some footage of him skating Flo skatepark in Notts. He is a gnarly guy who is more than happy to fly down some big gaps and rails!

Hugh Thompson - frontside noseblunt, Kettering. Lewis Robinson, 2016. “I’d seen Hugh’s rad Get Lesta footage and photos of him skating around Kettering, and when Chopper skateshop sadly closed its doors I asked him if he needed hooking up. He had a chat with Mark at Chopper, who was cool with it - and stoked Hugh would still be getting some support!”

Jazz Wade - crooked grind, Melton Mowbray. Tom Quigley, 2016. “I’ve been mates with Forde Brookfield for years, and he always jokes that I should sponsor him - but when he heard we were putting a team together he sent me over a ton of Jazz’s footage from their recent Paris trip. Jazz is really sick and I can’t wait to see his part in the new Baghead film!”

Vic Camilleri - back smith, Nottingham. Tim Smith, 2016. “I had seen a couple of clips of Vic on instagram skating the Notts DIY, but it was you guys who sent me some links to some of his best footage. Vic has the best style and is always having fun when he skates - even when he rips his hand open and spends 7 hours in A&E!

Vic Camilleri - early grab, Nottingham. Tom Quigley, 2015. “We’re emigrating to Canada in December and unfortunately Milk will be closing before Christmas. Although it’s a shame to close the shop, I’m really proud to have been able to work with the local council and Maverick Industries to finally get a top quality skatepark in the town. It’s rad that the park will always be a reminder of what we accomplished and how far we have come in the last 5 years. I know the guys on the shop team are gonna keep ripping all over the UK and beyond - I’ll be hyped to see what they are getting up to over the next few years!”

Locales Christopher “Bambi” Price

A somewhat irresponsible father figure amongst the Nottingham skate scene, Bambi’s well-rounded ability and quirky/gnar style has certainly earned him a place in the Midlands skateboarding hall of fame. With an intense hunger for a slam, and verbal diarrhoea that makes Frankie Boyle look like a Buckingham Palace dinner guest, the man’s passion pervades the session in sonic boom style. Despite me looking up to him since the age when you think it’s cool to wear bike chains as jewellery, there is every chance that he’ll be shredding long after I have liver failure… Intro by Tom Shaw-Weston.
