Since 1932, Variety the Children’s Charity has served children with physical and developmental disabilities in the St. Louis region, from infancy to age 21. Variety focuses on five core areas to help kids become independent and productive: gifting medical equipment for mobility and independence; developing unique educational and recreational programs; funding therapy, and wheelchair-accessible vans.
OUR MISSION To help local children with disabilities reach their full potential by providing them with services every time they need assistance.
OUR PROGRAMS Therapy | Recreation | Equipment | Education | Transportation
OUR IMPACT We improve Skills, Self-esteem, Socialization, and Independence. For more information, visit www.varietystl.org.

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Dear Friends of Variety, Last year, when I wrote for this publication, I enumerated many of the accomplishments I witnessed in my first year as Chairman. Today I look back on a second year with an equal amount of pride and satisfaction in the help we have provided to Variety children and their families. The 50th anniversary Dinner With the Stars, featuring the amazing talents of Lionel Richie, was everything you’d expect of such a momentous occasion and helped raise more than $2.5 million for our kids. The night served as a fitting finale to a tremendous Variety Week, which opened with another dazzling Runway Lights Fashion Show, featuring the elegant fashions of designer Carmen Marc Valvo. Our Man and Woman of the Year honorees, Ken Kranzberg and Judy Jones, were wonderful ambassadors for our kids, our staff, and our mission. Thank you Ken and Judy! Other long-established Variety programs increased their momentum. The Bikes for Kids program was again a rousing success. And this year’s Variety Children’s Theatre production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast was a great experience for our participants and the audience. Then there’s Adventure Camp. The fact that all the slots for all four weeks were filled on the opening day of registration is a powerful endorsement of the importance of this program. It was also gratifying to see changes made to allow more kids to experience the thrill of camp. These items get the lion’s share of attention out in the wider world. But what still fills me with the most pride, and the reason I got involved with Variety in the first place, is the day-to-day work that goes on helping children with special needs, and their equally-deserving families, obtain the medical equipment and therapy that promises lives of greater independence, confidence, socialization and self-esteem. It humbles me to know that, long after my term as Board Chairman, the work of Variety will continue to make a difference in so many lives.
Larry Otto Chairman of the Board

From our
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR With the close of 2016, Variety just completed two of its busiest and most successful years. I’m happy to report that during these two years, more people applied for our help with equipment and therapy than any other period in our 85 years of serving the St. Louis region. Such demand creates quite a challenge. But it also provides tremendous rewards when we can successfully meet that demand. And I’m happy to report that, during the past two years, Variety has provided more than $2.5 million to fund the purchase of vital medical equipment, as well as the therapy that makes that equipment even more functional. Even better, by the end of our most recent fiscal year, Variety was able to deliver on every single qualified equipment/therapy request we received. There’s nothing that, as Executive Director, I point to with more pride and satisfaction. Not to say Variety didn’t accomplish plenty more in 2016. We celebrated our 50th Dinner With the Stars with a rousing performance by headliner Lionel Richie. We held one our most successful Runway Lights Fashion Shows, featuring the couture of Carmen Marc Valvo. We instituted new Adventure Camp procedures that enabled more kids than ever before to get the opportunity to participate. We staged, through the auspices of Variety Children’s Theatre, another well loved, critically acclaimed musical in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. We earned, for the 4th year in a row, the top 4 star rating from Charity Navigator, an independent watchdog that evaluates charitable organizations in the U.S. Only 9% of charities have received this rating four years running. We put the Variety mission in front of more than a million people, thanks to Wehrenberg Theatres’ inviting us to produce a public-service announcement, starring Variety kids, that runs before every movie. And we continued, using every platform available, to make more families, and more people throughout the Greater St. Louis region, aware of our mission of helping local children with disabilities reach their full potential by providing them with services every time they need them. In closing, I’d like to share something one of our Variety parents posted to our Facebook page: “In a world that often tells them no and is full of tough challenges Variety means so much!!! Thank you Variety for believing in my child and in all the other children’s lives you help make more independent and happy.” I’d like to think this one comment represents the feelings of everybody who looks to Variety for help, as well as all those who open their hearts to help.
Brian Roy Executive Director

RECREATION Doesn’t every kid deserve to go to camp? That’s how Variety feels. And so, for four weeks in the summer, and two days during winter break, we give kids with special needs a very unique experience. Tailored to our campers’ strengths and abilities, activities include everything from swimming and rock climbing, to ice skating and art. All with the goal of helping these campers develop increased socialization, independence, and self-confidence. Madi was one of our campers last summer. And here’s the thing about Madi: she smiles all the time. So, whether the smiles at camp were just regular Madi smiles, or were actually conjured by the unique experience of camp, it’s kind of hard to say. Or it was. Until we got this note from Madi’s mom as camp was in session:
“I love when Madi goes to Variety camp and comes home with the “I Can” attitude. She got out of the tub all by herself for the first time tonight. Thank you for having such an amazing camp experience!” -Traci (Madi’s Mom)

EQUIPMENT DURABLE MEDICAL
Lots of kids like eating clementines. Will likes peeling them just as much. You see, Will has spastic diplegic CP, with very limited use of his left hand. But with the Saebo Glove and Saebo Stretch paid for by Variety, Will’s already shown decreased spasticity and increased range of motion in that hand in little more than a month.
As a result, peeling fruit, and many other tasks, are moving to Will’s can-do list. Will’s mom says the help Variety gives is life-changing, not just for Will, but her entire family. In big ways, like helping his siblings realize there are other kids like Will. And in small ways. Because Will’s not peeling all those clementines just for himself.

EDUCATION Whether Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, or The Wizard of Oz, every show Variety Children’s Theatre puts on includes more kids than the original production. That’s so we can give the greatest number of kids with special needs the chance to not only experience the magic of live theater, but to develop greater friendships, self-confidence, and self-esteem. And so, as a consequence, every show we put on has more happy endings than just the one the authors fashioned. This year, one of those additional happy endings centered on Brendan, one of the members of the teen ensemble, and we wanted his Dad to tell it.

Last year, after Brendan’s first show with VCT, I thanked you profusely for providing such a wonderful opportunity.
It was, by far, the best thing Brendan did in 2015. Nothing else came close to the impact that Mary Poppins had. Not one thing.
And then, Beauty and the Beast was better. Better because we saw how Brendan was truly engaged and embedded. He has a tendency to sometimes hang on the fringes of large groups, preferring to watch vs. engage. That didn’t happen with VCT. As we walked down the halls backstage of the Touhill on the first night, at least 20 people said hi to him and gave him a high five. Everyone knew who he was. The same thing happened all week. He was truly included and engaged. He felt like a star, but more importantly, he felt like a part of a group. I saw the same things happen over and over all week with other cast members, too. I’m not sure you understand how meaningful that is to those of us with kids with differing abilities—too many of these kids are marginalized, either physically or socially. We worry that he moves through the high school halls invisible—looked past by those who do not know him or how to engage with him. These past 7 weeks, no one looked past him. He was never invisible. They looked him in the eye and engaged with him. Among that group, he was treated as a peer and as full-fledged family member. In addition, his experience at Variety made him WANT to talk to teachers, classmates and total strangers about his “play.” Friends, both those with special needs and those without, were excited for him, impressed by him, and some were even jealous of him. That just doesn’t happen very much for him.
Thank you for creating and sustaining an experience that helped him fill his life and for making sure he and others like him were visible to so many. R. J.

THERAPY This is Maria. Just looking at her you know that line from West Side Story is true: All the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word, Maria. But at the moment, Maria can’t say her own name. She has a motor speech disorder called apraxia that disrupts the messages the brain sends to the lips, jaw, and tongue to form sounds, syllables, and words. Words like Maria. With intensive speech therapy provided through Variety’s TherHappy program, there’s a good likelihood Maria will be able to build the muscle memory that someday will allow her to speak clearly. Words like Maria. And from that will flow greater independence, self-esteem, and confidence. You know the last line of that song from West Side Story, right? The most beautiful sound I ever heard, Maria. “Maria” will never be a more beautiful sound than when Maria can say it herself.

TRANSPORTAT Before you can help transport an audience to a magical world, you have to get yourself to play practice. This year, Variety kid Kaci made every practice and performance of the Variety Children’s Theatre production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” in a brand new, wheelchair-accessible van Variety gave her. And not just to make it to the play. It’s hers for good. Already, she and her family have used it to get to Kaci’s many medical appointments, where it actually fits in the hospital parking garage. They used it to go to Florida to visit Kaci’s sister for Christmas. And, most importantly, it’ll be taking her back and forth to Maryville University, where Kaci will be studying Organizational Leadership this coming fall.
Kaci’s mom says, “Receiving the van is a huge financial relief, and gives us peace of mind knowing we have safe transportation for Kaci for many years.”
