Letter from the Executive Producer What is it about some shows that make them classics? Is it the story, the message, the magic, the characters, the music, the dancing? For the best shows of all time, it’s always all of the above – and that’s where Mary Poppins fits like a glove. Each year I get asked, “How did you pick the show?” The answer is simple. It must be a show with a message, a show that kids want to be in, and a show that kids want to go see. No show fits that bill better than Mary Poppins! This is a story that has many messages that we all can relate to in one way or another. First, it is a story about a man struggling with many issues – his family has become dysfunctional, his job is in jeopardy, and his stress over his family’s position in society threatens his successful marriage. An entire movie, "Saving Mr. Banks," concerned itself with this man’s strife and, truth be told, the real reason P.L. Travers wrote the story in the first place – George Banks was her own father! Even though this is not the story of everyone’s life, throughout the show there are issues we know are happening, could happen, or we hope don’t happen, all mixed with a sense of nonsensical humor and candor that whisks us away into that incredible Disney land of dreams. For so many children, the idea of a magical friend who understands them sounds like a miracle, so the remedies that Mary Poppins presents simplifies it to some basic acts of kindness, some bold declarations of righteousness and an outlook that is so positive, it’s perfect in every way. In the stage version of Mary Poppins, there is no Children’s Ensemble. It happened for the first time on our stage in 2015 when Variety Theatre interjected a group of fifty kids and teens into the show. They added unlimited dimension and character to the show – all sanctioned and supported by Disney Theatricals, one of our Variety Theatre partners. This year, kids and teens with disabilities have again teamed up with peers without disabilities to bring the formidable Variety Children's Ensemble to inspire and delight you. You see, Mary Poppins does not dwell on disabilities. Rather, she is focused on finding solutions to serve a lifetime of possibilities. Prepare to be inspired! Thank you,

The History of Variety Theatre Variety the Children’s Charity’s history is deeply rooted in theatre and entertainment. The first chapter was founded in Pittsburgh in 1928 by a group of theater owners after discovering an abandoned child in the seat of one of their theaters, adopting her and giving her the best life possible. Since then, much of what Variety does has a bit of a theatrical flavor, and that is true for Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis, Variety’s fourth national chapter, which opened in 1932. In 2009, after nine years of Variety Children’s Chorus success, Variety expanded its theatrical profile in a way that had not yet been done by any organization anywhere in the world. This new endeavor would put children with disabilities on stage as an ensemble in a musical with a professional cast and crew. Other talented, inclusive children would join them for a production that would rival what audiences could see on Broadway. And the rest, as they say, is history. This year, Variety Theatre celebrates its 11th anniversary – to date, more than 400 children have graced our stage or worked as interns behind-the-scenes. Now, we celebrate the beginning of a new decade of theatrical inspiration!

Since the first show in 2009, Variety Theatre has had a decidedly Webster University flavor. Many members of the production crew teach at The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University, many cast members are, or have been, students there, and many audition sessions have been held on the Webster campus. Webster University has generously leapt into the role of headliner as one of our cherished corporate supporters.

This year, Variety Theatre expanded to offer ten magical shows across two weekends. To help make this possible, Northwestern Mutual Clayton reserved the entire theatre for a special Northwestern Mutual Night on October 25. That evening, the Variety Theatre cast will take the stage for a room full of friends from Northwestern Mutual. This truly shows the extent of this organization’s support, not just for Variety Theatre, but also for the production’s message of inclusion.

Variety Theatre Star Joy Boland Recognized with Theater Circle Award

2019 AWARD

Last year, actress Joy Boland brought Variety Theatre audiences to their feet in her role as Ursula in Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Her inspired performance earned her the St. Louis Theater Circle Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Musical – a first for our production. “It was incredibly humbling to win Variety’s first individual Theater Circle award,” says Joy. “The shows have been at a professional level for years, and to be acknowledged in this way shines a wonderful light on the program.”

FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT

Joy believes in our program and its mission, bringing kids with special needs into the spotlight as part of a professional production. Last year, she spent as much time as possible with Variety Kids, warming them up with vocal exercises each night. Joy shares that performing alongside these Variety Kids pushes her to do better. “They reignite the desire in me for stagecraft EVERY TIME,” she says. “When they open their mouths on stage, it is not just a wellrehearsed ensemble – it is JOY.”

The Wizard of Oz – 2017

Emily’s Variety Theatre Story Variety Teen Emily has been a part of Variety Theatre since she first joined the Children’s Ensemble in our 2012 production, Annie. Last year, Emily joined the production team as a Wardrobe Intern. She leapt into the role, ensuring that each character had everything they needed before stepping onto the stage. In fact, she did so well that she has returned to the same role this year. “I am excited to work as a wardrobe intern because I love fashion,” says Emily. “I love seeing all of the costumes and I’m excited to be a part of the production.” As an intern, Emily traveled to Kansas City with the team to select our costumes. During rehearsals, she helped with costume fittings. And, during the show, she will help with the “quick changes” in between scenes. Emily has become such an integral part of the wardrobe team that they have created a special apron for her, modeled after what the pros wear during a show. Beyond the fun, Emily is also learning what it is like to work in the theatre world, something she is interested in as a career. “Being a Variety intern is like a job,” says Emily. “It will help me to become more independent and responsible.” We can’t wait to see where Emily takes her skills next.

Phoebe's Variety Theatre Story When the curtain falls at Variety Theatre, all those involved are forever changed. That has truly been the case for Variety Teen Phoebe, who has been a part of the Variety Theatre Children’s Ensemble for five years. Before joining Variety Theatre, Phoebe often relied on her family members for help because she lacked confidence in herself and her abilities. Her mom, Becky, shares a heartwarming story about a time when Phoebe really stepped into her own. “I remember the first time Phoebe went backstage and told me that she didn’t need my help,” says Becky. “In that very moment, she was instantly more independent.” “It was a huge step towards her not needing me as much,” Becky continues. “As the mom of a child with special needs, it was both exhilarating and humbling.” Phoebe’s new independence shows every time she is on stage, from tap dancing with the chimney sweeps to singing a solo at our annual Curtain Up Camp. Her skills have improved over the past five years, yes, but it is her self-esteem that really helps her shine, even beyond our program. “As her mother, I have noticed a tremendous difference in Phoebe’s maturity, confidence and ability, on and off the stage,” says Becky. “Variety Theatre has helped shape her into an amazing young woman.”

Production Who’s Who JAN ALBUS (Executive Producer)

is now in her 11th year as executive producer of Variety Theatre. She has produced and directed over 300 special events, including ballet, musical theater, operetta, and concerts. Her performing career includes 40 productions with The Muny, the St. Louis Civic Ballet, and the Florida Ballet Company. She holds a teaching degree and BA in French and English from St. Louis University, and a doctorate from the I.S.T.D., London, England. While teaching in the theatre department at The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University, she established the St. Louis Performing Arts Academy and the Westport Playhouse Dance Department. Jan founded St. Louis Performing Arts Productions and counts Bye Bye Birdie and Babes in Toyland as her favorites as producer there. At Variety, her position as CEO has utilized her background in theater, fundraising for children’s causes, and her marketing experience with national corporate sponsors. Since joining Variety in 1995, she has founded many programs, including Variety’s Bikes for Kids, Adventure Camp, Variety Chorus, Variety Dance, Curtain Up Camp, Variety Theatre, Young Variety, Pedia Pals, TherHappy Kids, and the Dennis and Judith Jones Playground in Forest Park. She created Variety’s Runway Lights Fashion Show, and produced the Dinner with the Stars gala for 21 years. In 2011, Jan received the Women in Leadership Award from the St. Louis Empowerment Foundation. In 2018, she and Lara Teeter were honored with the St. Louis Theater Circle "Award for a Body of Work” for Variety Theatre. Jan is married to Larry, her mentor and inspiration in all endeavors, and is proud of her daughter Jacque, son Mike and his wife Annie, and two incredible grandsons Sam and Ben.

LARA TEETER (Director &

Choreographer) has performed,

directed, and choreographed for major regional theatre and opera houses nationwide. He is a Professor of Theatre and the Head of the Musical Theatre Program at The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University. The Conservatory is proud to be an official partner of Variety. Lara has performed in six Broadway shows, including the revival of the Rodgers and Hart classic On Your Toes, for which he received a Tony nomination and Outer Critics Circle Award. Since 1990, Lara has appeared on The Muny stage in many shows: Singin’ In the Rain, The Wizard of Oz, Little Shop of Horrors, White Christmas, Hairspray, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Disney's The Little Mermaid, Bye, Bye Birdie, and, most recently, The Muny’s 100th Celebration and Gypsy! For Variety Theatre, he has directed The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Oliver!, The Wizard of Oz, Annie, Peter Pan, Disney's The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and he is thrilled to be involved with the remounting of this year's unique production of Mary Poppins! Lara also teaches various tap and audition workshops throughout the country working with kids and teens ages 10 to 18. Here in St. Louis, he and his wife, Kristen, teach the "Beyond the Performance" workshops throughout the year, bringing together a wide variety of guest artists from the St. Louis community and beyond. They are the proud parents of Charlie, Elizabeth, Katherine and Maggie.

Production Who’s Who JOY ADDLER (Stage Manager/ Company Manager) is grateful and

excited to be a part of her sixth Variety Theatre production! A proud graduate of the stage management class of 2016 from The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University, she is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management with the hopes of continuing her career in inclusive theatre. She is so grateful to be a part of the Variety family, and to be involved in creating such a unique and meaningful theatre experience for our kids and for our community. DUNSI DAI (Scenic Designer) has

designed off-Broadway as well as at regional theatres across the country. His set design for Mustard Seed Theatre’s Remnant received a Kevin Kline award in the category of Outstanding Scenic Design. ROBIN DIEHL (Wrangler/Youth Supervisor) is in her third year as a

member of the backstage team with Variety Theatre. She serves as the Program Manager at Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis, working directly with Variety Kids

and their families on a regular basis through Variety’s Camp and Performing Arts programs. She has a background in special education and currently resides in St. Louis with her husband, her children and her fantastic dogs.

LOIS ENDERS (Dance Captain) is

happy to be part of her first Variety Theatre production. She is a graduate of Webster University with a BA in Dance, and a member of AEA and AGVA. Lois performed five seasons as a Radio City Rockette in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. She appeared in the first national tour of Irving Berlin's White Christmas (Assistant Dance Captain/Swing). Lois danced aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines and performed regionally with The Muny, Riverside Theatre, and STAGES St. Louis. She also danced for the St. Louis Symphony at Powell Hall in partnership with STAGES St. Louis for an educational concert of Peter and the Wolf. Lois also teaches dance around the St. Louis area, recently adding Musical Theatre Dance for Variety.

LUCY GARLICH (Makeup Designer) is a Wig and Makeup

Design Major at Webster University. She is thrilled to return to Variety after working on Disney’s The Little Mermaid last year. She loves working with children and is excited to share her joy of makeup with them!

KELLEY JORDAN (Wig & Hair Designer/Supervisor) is a seasoned

wig/hair designer, licensed cosmologist and savvy businesswoman with more than 30 years of theatrical and concert experience. She has worked in hair and makeup at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis for more than 30 years, including the most recent national tours of Hamilton and Disney's The Lion King. She is a member of IATSE Local 805 and a wig supervisor at The Muny, where she recently served as associate designer for The Wiz. Her talents have also been seen in productions such as The Phantom of the Opera, All Shook Up, and Oprah’s Lifeclass. Kelley credits her talents and her love for hair to her mother, Clara “Mickey” Wings - dreams do come true and all things are possible through God! Kelley is proud to be the first African American female wig designer at The Muny. K. Jordan Theatrical Academy opens soon!

Coach) has been with Variety Theatre since the beginning. She has a BFA from Arizona State University, where she specialized in Children’s Theatre and Creative Dramatics. She received her Masters in Media from Webster University. She has taught drama to preschoolers up to senior citizens, including college-level classes. She has been in over two- dozen shows, a few feature films, and various commercials. She has directed numerous shows, including those at The Theatre Guild of Webster Groves.

MARK KRUPINSKI (Associate Producer) has been a performer,

choreographer and consultant for The Muny since 1973. Since 1984, Mark and his wife, Caren, have been the directors of Krupinski Academy of Dance. Mark is also the founder and artistic director of the American Dance Troupe. He has performed with Gene Kelly, Herschel Bernardi, and Chita Rivera, and was an original member of the American Dance Machine in New York City. Mark also served as an artist-in-residence at Webster University for more than 10 years.

Production Who’s Who SCOTT LOEBL (Scenic Charge Artist) is the charge artist for the

Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and also works on the paint crews for The Muny and Opera Theatre of St. Louis. He also designs and paints scenery for the Rep’s Imaginary Theatre Company and Winter Opera St. Louis. He is a proud member of United Scenic Artists Local USA 829 and serves as a trustee on their national executive board. Scott also teaches scene painting courses at The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

RAY MARTIN (Wardrobe Master)

is the Wardrobe Master at The Muny, where he has worked on more than 100 shows. For many years, Ray was the Wardrobe Master and Wig Master for the St. Louis Ballet. In addition to his professional work, Ray has costumed shows for high schools, colleges, and community theaters. He is proud to be part of the Variety family.

KYLE MCCORD (Technical Director), a Michigan native, had been

working for a number of theaters around the nation, including international tours, prior to landing in St. Louis for a production management job a couple of years ago. Finding his way back to theatre, he couldn’t be happier being able to help out with Variety Theatre.

JACK RUSHEN (Production

Manager) is currently the Director of Production and Operations at Technical Productions Inc., based in St. Louis, a company that specializes in event production for corporate meetings and live events. He previously worked with Variety Theatre in 2012, acting as Technical Director, and is glad to be working with such an amazing organization once more.

Previous credits include Festival Lighting Designer/Coordinator for Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits Music Festival and Voodoo Music and Arts Experience; Production Manager at Casa Manana Theatre; Production Manager, Parnelli Awards 2016-present. He is a graduate from the Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University.

DESTINY SAILORS (Assistant

Stage Manager) is returning to Variety Theatre after assistant stage managing last year’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. As a sophomore stage management major at Webster University, Destiny is thrilled to have the opportunity to be involved with Variety for a second year! Her call is to use theatre as a means to give people of all ages and all cultures a voice. Just this last summer, she pursued this calling by interning with Kyuka Youth Outreach, a Ugandan-based arts outreach organization. Destiny looks forward to continuing her work with children in this year’s Mary Poppins! Enjoy the show!

DR. MARC SCHAPMAN (Musical Director/Conductor) has been an

active performer, director and music director in the St. Louis-area for more than 10 years. He completed a Doctor of Music in Voice Performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. A native of Iowa, Mr. Schapman received his Bachelor of Arts from Luther College and his Master of Music from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Active in both musical theatre and opera, his favorite roles include Pump Boys and Dinettes (Jim) and Siegfried (Mime). He made his Carnegie Hall debut singing the worldpremiere of Edwin Penhorwood’s An American Requiem. Currently, Mr. Schapman serves as Professor of Voice

Production Who’s Who in the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUe) Department of Music. In addition to his SIUe duties, Mr. Schapman serves as a voice teacher for Opera Theater of St. Louis’ Artists-inTraining program and is the Program Coordinator for the Opera Theatre of St. Louis Spring Training program. He is excited to begin his second season with Variety Theatre to make an impact on the lives of so many young kids who deserve the opportunity to reach their full potential and shine on the stage!

NATHAN SCHEUER (Lighting

Designer) has worked in the theatre,

Properties Manager and Resident Properties Designer with SIUe’s Department of Theater and Dance, Properties Designer with The Black Rep of Saint Louis, and Properties Designer with Union Avenue Opera. As a Stage Manager, Kate has worked with Winter Opera Saint Louis, Gateway Opera, Opera Collective Saint Louis and Mustard Seed Theater. She resides in Collinsville, IL.

KATE SPAULDING (Wig and Hair Coordinator) is thrilled to back with Variety for a fifth show! She has been involved in theatre for many years and loves sharing her passion with the Variety Kids. This past season concluded her fifth year in the wig and makeup department at The Muny. Some of her favorite shows have been Hairspray, The Wiz and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Her experiences at Variety Theatre have been some of the most cherished in her career.

DR. JOSEPH WELCH (Assistant

Musical Director) is Visiting Professor

of Music at Blackburn College. An advocate for the vocal and keyboard arts, Dr. Welch is the Founder and Artistic Director of St. Louis Art Song. He coaches studios in the Opera Theatre of St. Louis Artists-in-Training program and is the Director of Music at First Congregational Church in Bunker Hill, IL. Previous music direction credits: Opera Edwardsville, SIUe's Summer Showbiz, Marble City Opera, Midwest Institute of Opera, and many summer programs. Dr. Welch is the resident pianist for Opera Edwardsville and

frequently works with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra. As choral accompanist, he plays for the St. Louis Children's Choirs’ Young Men's Chorus and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra's Holiday Festival Chorus. Dr. Welch serves on the boards of the Southern Illinois Young Artist Organization and the Bunker Hill Education Foundation. Recent awards: Member of the Year for the Illinois State Music Teachers Association – Gateway Arch East Chapter and Adjunct Instructor of the Year at Blackburn College.

JOHN WYLIE (Technical Advisor)

is excited to be working on Mary Poppins. John is serving as Technical Advisor this year. He designed lights for nine previous Variety productions before stepping into this role for the 2018 production. John is the head of production programs at The Conservatory of Theatre Arts at Webster University, where he teaches Technical Direction and Lighting. Locally, John has designed for The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Metro Theatre Company, the St. Louis Black Rep and Shakespeare Festival St. Louis.
