Since 1932, Variety the Children’s Charity has served children with physical and developmental disabilities in the St. Louis region, from infancy to age 21. Variety focuses on five core areas to help kids become independent and productive: gifting medical equipment for mobility and independence; developing unique educational and recreational programs; funding therapy, and Sunshine Coach Vans. Variety partners with 61 agencies to support programs and give scholarships that directly impact the lives of Variety children. For more information, visit www.varietystl.org.

From our

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Dear Friends of Variety, I couldn’t have asked for a better first year as Chairman of Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis. During 2015, I was pleased to observe the organization receive three Variety International Awards for corporate partner, media partner, as well as the Presidential Award. Many of our stalwart programs proved themselves to be as popular as ever in 2015, including the Variety Children’s Theatre production (this year, “Mary Poppins”), the 4-week summer Adventure Camp, the amazing Bikes for Kids program, and all of Variety Week in the spring, including a fabulous Dinner With the Stars headlined by Toni Braxton. As an aside, it will be my honor to be Board Chair as Dinner With the Stars celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016. It was also my pleasure during 2015 to

honor Variety CEO Jan Albus for her 20 years of dedicated service, and to give a fond farewell to longtime Variety Health Services Director Diane Gruszka. Still, I’m most proud, and most touched, by the day-to-day work Variety carries out, helping kids with special needs, and their families, obtain all-important equipment and therapy, scheduling outings to Cardinal games and Grant’s Farm, providing hope, encouragement, and a smile, to everyone who seeks our help. The future looks bright for Variety, and the children we serve, and I can tell you that the staff, as well as the Board, are hard at work planning ways to make Variety an ever more valuable resource in 2016, and beyond. Larry Otto Chairman of the Board

From our

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Dear Friends of Variety, With our roots in show business, we understand the power, and attraction, of awards. The names themselves connote glamor and achievement: Oscars, Tonys, Emmys, Grammys. There are, of course, awards for non-profits, and I’m proud to report that Variety won two of the most prestigious in 2015. Of course, just like in Hollywood, or on Broadway, nothing Variety does would get done without people willing to give money to the cause. And so I’d like to thank you for your financial support. It makes everything possible. Including the following accomplishments. For the third year in a row, Variety was awarded designation as a Four Star Charity, the top rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest and most-used independent evaluator of charities. Of the 8000 charities they evaluate, only 30% receive a four-star rating in any year, and only 14% do so in three successive years. This makes us very proud.

3

Charity Navigator evaluates charities on their financial health, accountability and transparency, and results reporting; criteria they feel are most important for a donor to consider when selecting a charity to support. Their system for rating charities is unbiased, objective, and data-driven. An excellent review from them confers the utmost in legitimacy to charities like ours.

Equally important for Variety, and the people who support us, is the 2015 Torch Award from the Better Business Bureau. As BBB states, the Torch Award is “a celebration of excellence in business ethics,” and is awarded to companies (both for- and non-profit) that demonstrate a commitment to high ethical standards in the categories of management practices, customer relations, communications, and reputation within the community. Only two non-profits in the St. Louis area received Torch Awards in 2015, and we are thrilled to be one of them. Both these awards speak to the manner in which Variety carries out its mission to provide equipment, therapy, and whatever else will help children with disabilities fulfill their potential. These awards also speak to your generosity. Without that, there’d be no awards to collect. Including the greatest awards we get: the smiles and laughter of each and every one of our kids. Sincerely,

Jan Albus Chief Executive Officer

The Results We Get 78% of Variety Adventure Campers displayed increased independence. 100% of Variety kids in speech therapy improved their socialization skills. 96.7% of Variety kids with adaptive bikes increased muscle strength. Self-esteem scores of kids in Variety Children’s Theatre increased by 80%!

THERAPY Jadyn Jadyn works hard to overcome the mobility issues her cerebral palsy creates. In just an hour’s time, she climbs stairs, does puzzles, works the treadmill, works her arms with a Zip Ball, and undertakes a balance ball routine a kid with no disability would find challenging. Then follows all that with a vigorous speech therapy session.

And all on top of a regular school day, in a school where, we should point out, she doesn’t qualify for speech therapy because she didn’t score low enough. Her mom doesn’t think Jadyn would be doing as well without the therapy that’s paid for by Variety. Therapy that, on a daily basis, uncovers and polishes the skills Jadyn needs to reach her full potential.

RECREATION

Action Jackson There are a lot of cool things to do at Variety Adventure Camp, and Jackson, who has cerebral palsy, did most of them with amazing energy. He danced in a hurry. He raced around the basketball court. He gave a beach ball quite a workout in the pool. He climbed to the very top of the rock wall. But he was also responsible for one of the tenderest moments. See him holding that girl’s hand? That’s Ellie. Every time they got out of the pool and headed back to the slide, Jackson took her hand. It was heartwarming to see. If you needed proof Variety helps kids like Jackson become more social, and more self-confident, there it is.

Colin

EQUIPMENT

The simple, taken-for-granted act of standing is vital to someone like Colin, who has spina bifida. Standing aids his digestion. It helps him build muscle. And it gives him real independence.

Fortunately, Colin’s family doesn’t have to bear the cost of his stander. This precious piece of equipment was provided absolutely free by Variety. Something we’re happy to report is “stand”ard procedure around here.

His mom says Colin’s legs would certainly not be as developed if they never got the chance to bear the weight of his body.

EDUCATION Andrew & Drew Those who saw the Variety Children’s Theatre production of “Mary Poppins” also witnessed a budding friendship, and perhaps the beginning of an act that’ll thrill audiences worldwide. Andrew and Drew almost certainly stole the show with their tap dance routine in the middle of the “Step in Time” number. Born blind and with cerebral palsy, Andrew had to work extra hard to perfect the routine, but he did it, and with great humor. The growth in his self-confidence and self-esteem was there on stage for everyone to see. After their duet, Drew would say to the rest of the dancers, “Now I wanna see you do that,” and Andrew would interject, with the assuredness of any superstar, “I’d really like to SEE that.” If you saw it, you won’t soon forget it.

SUNSHINE COACH VANS

Mollie Despite having cerebral palsy, Mollie is a girl on the go. Who could go a lot more places with a van that accommodates her power wheelchair. It just so happens that Variety was prepared to give this kind of van to one lucky family.

So Mollie’s mom applied. And since you’ve probably already seen the picture of Mollie with the van, you’ve guessed the outcome. And now the girl on the go is going more places, more easily, than ever before.
