Letter from the Executive Producer

Enriching lives, inspiring When communities celebrate, new so dopossibilities. we.

Welcome to the 10th Anniversary of Variety Theatre! Every year has been the fulfillment of our goal to give children of all abilities an opportunity to be in a classic Broadway musical that has a message for them and everyone who attends. This year is no exception. It’s hard to celebrate without looking back to the special “Variety moments” that have inspired audiences each year. In 2013, it was a touching moment in Peter Pan when Variety child Selah left her wheelchair in the final scene and flew to Neverland with Peter. In 2011, audiences were amazed to see Variety child Gracie soaring overhead as a flying monkey in The Wizard of Oz. Audiences exploded during each performance of Disney's Mary Poppins when Variety child Andrew tap danced with Bert during “Step in Time.” Finally, who can forget Variety child Nick’s incredible portrayal of Flounder in our 2014 production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid? The enormous success of that production encouraged us to present it this year for our anniversary, along with a few twists that should rank it as our best production yet! Isn’t it amazing that a tale written so long ago by Hans Christian Anderson could still have relevance in this age of Gen Zers and all the technological advancements hardly dreamed of back then? But as long as there are children with dreams and fathers who have ambitious daughters, the story of “The Little Mermaid” will ring true. It took four years to animate this story. In 1989, Disney’s The Little Mermaid opened in movie houses across the country emerging as a hit for kids and adults alike. It became the forerunner of the adaptation to the live stage that you will experience tonight. In 2009, for our inaugural year, we presented The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Starring in the role of Becky Thatcher was a twelve-year-old actress named Berklea Going. Now, ten years later at age 22, after graduating as a musical theater major from Indiana University and starring in this year’s Muny production of Singin' in the Rain, she returns to Variety Theatre as Ariel. Welcome home Berklea!

As a special gift to all who attend this year’s show, Variety Theatre will present Broadway icon Terrence Mann in the role of King Triton. Terry originated many roles on Broadway and was nominated three times for a Tony. He is world-famous for starring as the Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Javert in Les Miserables, and Rum Tum Tugger in Cats. The Variety Children’s Ensemble will have an unforgettable experience performing with this acclaimed actor. We want to thank you for your continued support through the years. It has allowed thousands of kids of all abilities to reap the benefits that only performing arts can provide, whether on the stage, backstage as interns, or in the audience. The award Variety Theatre received this year from the St. Louis Theater Circle gave us “recognition for a body of work,” which includes nine years of outstanding casts, crew and all who work tirelessly to make this inclusive program successful. All praise and gratitude to Ken and Nancy Kranzberg for their vision from the beginning, and to all those who believe, as Nancy does, that Variety Theatre is a gift for the souls of our children. Now we invite you to dive into a different way of looking at the world, as a young girl musters the courage to make her dreams come true and ultimately saves her father’s kingdom from a villainous sea witch! The History of Variety Theatre Variety the Children’s Charity’s history is deeply rooted in theatre and entertainment. The first chapter was founded in Pittsburgh in 1928 by a group of theater owners after discovering an abandoned child in the seat of one of their theaters, adopting her and giving her the best life possible. Since then, much of what Variety does has a bit of a theatrical flavor, and that is true for Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis, Variety’s fourth chapter, which opened in 1932. In 2009, Variety St. Louis had an idea – an idea to return to these theatrical roots in a way that had not yet been done by any organization anywhere in the world. This idea was to put children with disabilities on stage, but they wouldn’t be on stage alone. A professional cast and crew, as well as an inclusive ensemble of children, would join these Variety Kids for a production that would rival what audiences could see on Broadway. And the rest, as they say, is history. This year, Variety Theatre celebrates its 10th anniversary, as well as a “Special Award for a Body of Work” from the St. Louis Theater Circle.

We hope you enjoy the show that has been 10 years in the making.

STARLIGHT FOUNDING SPONSOR Ken & Nancy Kranzberg ken and nancy kranzberg work

tirelessly on behalf of arts education
and to provide accessibility to the arts
for everyone in St. Louis — including Variety’s children with disabilities.

In 2009, when Variety Theatre was just an idea proposed by Variety CEO Jan Albus, Ken and Nancy rallied behind it with a generous donation that funded that very first show – The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Now in its 10th year, every Variety Theatre production has been funded by the Kranzbergs, who have enjoyed seeing the program take shape and expand year after year. “While we will always have a special place in our hearts for that very first production, it has been truly magical to watch as each production grows and improves,” Nancy said.

“For 10 years, we have supported this program because we see the impact it has on everyone, from the Variety Kids involved in the production to their cast mates to the audience." Nancy serves on the Variety Board of Directors and in 2008 was named Variety Woman of the Year. Ken was named Variety Man of the Year in 2016.

STARLIGHT SPONSOR David & Thelma Steward david and thelma steward

are among our community’s most devoted ambassadors for children with disabilities, always recognizing and responding immediately to their needs, big or small. Inspired by what they have seen each year on the stage of Variety Theatre, the Stewards did not hesitate to support this program, understanding its crucial role in helping Variety children realize their dreams, while also educating the entire audience to see well beyond a person’s disabilities.

“We are blessed to support Variety Theater and all the beautiful kids and amazing families who work so hard to make this special event a huge success,” said David. “We are inspired by their talent and commitment.” Besides Theatre, the Stewards also support Variety’s Lifts for Kids, Bikes for Kids, Now Hear This, TherHappy Kids, and special equipment programs, as well as provide underwriting support for Dinner with the Stars and Runway Lights Fashion Show through World Wide Technology and the Steward Family Foundation. David is Founder and Chairman of World Wide Technology, a strong partner of Variety St. Louis for the past 11 years. The organization lends its support to many of Variety’s programs and events, including as Corporate Supporters for Variety Theatre since 2011. David is also a former Variety Man of the Year and served four years as Chairman of the Variety Board of Directors before being named Chairman Emeritus. Thelma is serving her sixth term on the board and is preparing for her 10th year as Honorary Chairman of the Runway Lights Fashion Show. She was previously Chairman of the Variety Children’s Chorus and in 2012 was honored at Dinner With the Stars as Variety’s Woman of the Year.

STARLIGHT SPONSOR

Ron & Cheri Fromm

Terry & Sally Schnuck

ron and cheri fromm embrace

every opportunity to help local children and the St. Louis arts community. The Fromms are especially drawn to activities that are inclusive, bringing together people with and without disabilities to accomplish a common goal, making Variety Theatre the perfect fit for their generous philanthropic endeavors. As the past year’s Variety Woman of the Year, Cheri spoke for her and Ron’s support when she said,

“To see the smiles, hear the singing voices, watching Variety children swim, dance and spin around, that is the real reward and the true honor goes to the dedicated and committed parents who do an amazing job each day caring for God’s children.” Ron and Cheri also have a personal interest in Variety Theatre again this year. Their daughter, Dawn Gilbertson, assists with Variety’s performing arts program by teaching movement and dance and is a member of the show’s ensemble. The couple’s grandson, Tanner, is also in the children's ensemble for his second year. Beyond Theatre, Ron and Cheri are year-round supporters of Variety, for both the TherHappy program as well as our medical equipment program. Cheri also currently serves on the Variety Board of Directors.

terry and sally schnuck have

long supported Variety and our theatre program, attending some of our very first productions. After falling in love with Variety Theatre, they became Starlight Supporters of Peter Pan and since have supported three other Variety Theatre productions. “Musical theatre is exciting,” Terry said. “As a producer on Broadway, I know the work, effort and commitment that go into a great performance, and Variety Theatre produces great shows. I’ve known of their community efforts for many years.” Terry and Sally are vested in helping to give children of all abilities the opportunity to shine on stage, feel the magic and learn about acceptance.

“We choose to support Variety Theatre because it gives children with disabilities the same opportunity as any other kid to be involved in a theatrical production, to learn skills and to be a member of a team working toward a common goal,” Terry said. “And not many kids get to be involved in a professional production such as these. You can see the joy on their faces as they participate.”

Terry’s most recent Broadway producer credits include: The Prom, Bandstand, Sunset Boulevard and Fun Home. Variety is proud to be supported by one of Broadway’s most prolific producers.

have partnered with Variety since moving to St. Louis in the mid-1980s. From fielding phone calls at the Variety telethon to becoming Starlight Sponsors in 2014, their involvement remains a cornerstone of their charitable endeavors. Michael’s philanthropic efforts were recognized by Variety with the Man of the Year award in 2012, while Noémi received the Woman of the Year award in 2013. The only couple to be honored in back-to-back years, the Neidorff ’s enduring commitment to Variety shows no signs of slowing. In addition to raising funds for the Variety Theatre, the Neidorffs have also backed a named endowment for Variety Adventure Camp.

WE CARE about a Healthy Future

“Variety does miraculous work in helping children where they need it most in order to reach their full potential. In doing so, they also support some of the most loving, giving parents and foster care individuals you will ever meet.” – Michael F. Neidorff Under Mr. Neidorff ’s direction, Centene Corporation has become one of Variety’s top corporate partners. Centene was awarded the Variety International Corporate Award in 2014, establishing the company as that year’s most valuable corporate contributor to any Variety chapter around the globe. The Performing Arts Fund for Variety Children During this performance, you will witness 16 kids and teens with disabilities on stage, while 11 are working behind-the-scenes as interns to the Production Team. But you likely won’t notice their disabilities. Instead, you’ll see their talents, their energy and their determination. As we celebrate 10 years of Variety Theatre’s impact on Variety Kids, you can have a role in making an impact on the lives of these talented and unique members of our cast and crew.

Brian's Variety Theatre Story Variety Teen Brian has a passion for theatre. No matter the role he is given, you can bet he is going to give it his all. Brian’s mom, Melissa, shares a story from Brian’s first Variety Theatre production – Disney’s Beauty and the Beast – that shows this excitement better than anything. “Brian was so excited to be cast as a wolf,” says Melissa. “He came running out of costume fittings with a very ill-fitting wolf mask. He didn’t care that it wasn’t ready for him yet, saying, ‘I’ll just go like this,’ while cocking his head so he could look out one eye. And he would have if they hadn’t gotten him a mask that fit!” Through Variety Theatre, Brian has learned to hone this passion and joy into skills that have developed over time. Under the direction of Production Director Lara Teeter and Assistant Director Larry Pry, Brian has taken his talents and applied them to each role he is given, performing them better each show. “I love Lara and Larry for the way they took Brian in, noticed his gifts and have allowed him to have special parts,” says Melissa. “He was so happy!”

The Performing Arts Fund provides financial support to give these local Variety Kids the opportunity to participate in the Variety Theatre program. This fund brings so much more than time in the spotlight – it introduces new skills, builds independence, fosters confidence and brings friends that become family. Your gift to the Performing Arts Fund for Variety Children ensures that children and teens with disabilities continue to experience all that Variety Theatre has to offer. Please consider donating so that we can continue to help Variety Kids become more confident and more independent. Thank you.

If you meet Brian, you’ll notice that this happiness is a constant, especially when doing what he loves. And Variety Theatre has given him the chance to do this on a professional level, building tangible skills outside of acting, singing and dancing. One of these skills, and one that transfers to his everyday life, is teamwork. Brian enjoys being part of a group and is truly invested in the whole process, understanding that there is no small role on the stage. “Variety Theatre allows him a professional outlet for his natural passion as well as a group of people he calls his ‘tribe,’” says Melissa.
