HELLO INDIA

The INFOTECH FORUM Debated -

Can the CSR fund be used for Skill Development & Training? Innovation in cyberspace has multiplied to an extent where it is touching almost every facet of individuals, businesses and government. Today, every vertical in every sector is leveraging the capabilities of digital technologies for delivering services, improving performance and for many other inherent benefits of cyber technologies. India, through its initiatives such as Digital India, Make in India etc. is also stimulating the pace of development and adoption of new technologies. The daylong annual Cyber Security Conclave & Infotech Forum discussed on the possibilities on how to secure India from the growing Cyberattacks. Technology is helping to fuel innovation and generate new value for businesses in India through digital disruption/innovation. The number of people using digital devices to access information, knowledge, purchase goods or services, talk to one another and access client or company data is increasing rapidly and a new coined word that is “Digital Transformation” has emerged. Considering the criticality of services being delivered and the sensitivity of the data being involved, the severity & scope of the impact in case of any breach or attack in cyberspace could be immense. Strengthening the cyber security posture of the nation as a whole is certainly the need of the hour. This includes building capabilities and capacities of individuals, industry and government. With the growing cyber attacks, virtually every sizable enterprise and government entity knows the critical importance of taking pains to protect their data. There is widespread circulation of cyber security myths and partly because of the enormous volume and ever-changing nature of cyberattacks, it is making it impossible to win all the battles all the time. India needs a strong Data-protection law, much stronger than GDPR. Secondly, there has to be a strong mandate on India’s data to be inside the boundary line of the country. The reason being technology companies, social media, cloud provider and e-commerce companies take our data for free of cost. These services are free with conditions difficult to comprehend. Without a strong data privacy policy, we can’t control the data flow out of the country. All of the above ramifications give a high surge of technical and non-technical professionals to cater to the growing needs of cyber security practitioners. India needs to form a group of dedicated cyber security professionals, having a deep insight into the field of cybercrime, cyber forensics, cyber law and cyber security domain. These professionals shall incorporate the basic and advanced program to the participants. The growth story of digital India is still unsung and with the advent of quality education in cyberspace, India shall rule the jobs in the cyberspace. This shall boost the country’s overall economy as well as employment generation, which shall have a positive bearing on the country’s GDP. It is only possible if there is a strong mandate and support from the Government and PSUs in the country. The Government has to consider a special budget or can also advise to use from the existing CSR budget for skill development and training for cyber security.

www.varindia.com

Looking forward to a strong mandate from the Government for this cause! India is the only nation in the world to have more than seventy percent of its population below the age of thirty-five. This shows an exciting option of more individuals to enter into this space. The program shall be tailor made to suit the requirements of the various verticals and shall immensely help the younger generation to be suitably placed. Moreover, the training program shall be localized and can be made in various vernacular languages to reach every taluka and villages in the country. Candidates from rural places shall get an equal opportunity to participate in this program and get placed. The mission of our Government “Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas” shall be quantified through this initiative.

ROUND ABOUT

Will Technology ditch mankind? These days, quite a few people ask me to write on technology, mostly the latest trends in technology. Sometimes, the subject could be very grossly limited, such as technology trends of 2019. I tried to discern the reasons for such frequent demands. Does it mean people have become more conscious about technologies now than ever before? Does it mean there are more magazines- online and offline, - focusing on technology? Does it mean mankind and technology have become inseparable?

if such technologies are used judiciously. Impact on education will be much more pronounced than in other disciplines. The concepts of schools, colleges, universities etc. may undergo a drastic change. Blackboards will give way to digital tubes and flattened surfaces, where lessons by expert teachers will be beamed to classrooms or any other place, which the students decide. Those who believe that language will be a barrier in that dispensation is totally mistaken. Simultaneous translation to every conceivable language will be possible in a short time from now. The Google platforms, which are embedded in mobile phones, have already such facilities.

The other day, someone remarked in my presence that man has become a slave of technology. It is the technology that decides what man should do and not the human brains. If I counter him with the argument that it is the man who invented and innovated technology and how he can become a slave of technology, it may not cut ice since he also said that man has become a prisoner of technology and that will continue forever. Going by the type of things that are happening around, can his assertions be waved off ? I thought I should analyze some of the logic he has put forward. Those ideations are not earth-shaking findings of his own. He collated some of the real-life examples that are happening around us, which I thought should be considered before dismissing or accepting his proposition. The first point he asked is how many can live without a mobile phone today. How many people in a WhatsApp or linked in, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. are known to each other. Indeed, social media has made unknowns known, despite the huge mass of land and ocean that separate them. That means the technology can deliver both tangible and intangible things to mankind, can whet his/her curiosity and make the concept of fraternity and fellowship wider and exciting. If I may say that a lot of them are getting addicted to that it may not be wide off the mark. Does it mean that they have become prisoners of technology? Earlier people used to go for morning walk either alone, in twos and threes or in groups. Those who are accompanied by their friends or spouses talk to each other and if they walk in groups crack jokes and at times burst into wild guffaws, at times annoying fellow walkers. These days, most of the morning walkers have a headphone connected with mobile. The person either may be listening to music, prayers, news or talking to someone, depending on his/her bend of mind. There are some senior functionaries of the government and private sector, who confess that they dictate their important communications, notes and thoughts into the Google platform, which automatically get converted into words. They feel that their mind is most fertile during the morning hours and that time is most conducive to do some

creative and complex works. There are yet another set of people, who try to measure every step they have covered, every calorie they burnt by using the digital health watch running again on Google platform. For them also technology is playing an important role in their day to day life. Will the impact of these breakthrough technologies remain only on mobile telephone or transport? Not at all! Technology also builds bridges with various disciplines. For instance, mobile telephones will be the safest bet for a doctor to monitor his patients. Doctors can monitor patients through mobile telephone devices and give them advise round the clock as to what he/she should do in case of complications, prescribe medicines online after examining him or her using distance neutral modern equipment, assess his/her health parameters on a real-time basis etc. With these technologies, surgery can be done by a surgeon sitting thousands of miles away using robotics playing on console to direct the robot to carry out the instructions. Does it mean that people would no longer go to foreign lands for medical help and surgery? The other area that would benefit from this rocket technology is disaster management. Spacecraft can be used for rescue operations, rehabilitation, extending medical care, providing scarce food articles and medicines in the event of blockades in the terrains. That way, thousands of lives can be saved,

Does it mean, man has already become a slave of technology? That conundrum has to be explained properly to arrive at an informed conclusion. Let me take two scenarios. One, all on a sudden, the so-called internet gets affected and becomes non-functional. Your PC, laptop, or mobile or any other gadget, which are linked to the internet go dud. The only thing that you can do with your PC is to use it as a typewriter. You may have to give up your mobile telephone and switch over to fixed lines which are connected with telephone lines, like what you had some two decades back or so. What will happen to your train or plane ticket booking? Now, one can do it in seconds either sitting at home or office or any other place of your liking. In the absence of the internet, you may have to queue up near the booking office or at the travel agent’s office for hours together to get the work done. There is also another way of looking at things. Advancement in technology is a natural phenomenon that has been happening through millennia and will continue forever. Innovation is a part of human survival and it will remain so till eternity. Every time, when mankind faced threats and uncertainty, innovations had taken place to address such eventualities. That is why many believe that during the last two World Wars, mankind suffered and benefited. It has suffered because of a huge loss of lives, properties and human miseries that were let loose. It benefited because of the huge inventions that have happened in different domains like aviation, medical science, logistics and the list go on. Technology always balances itself. If there is a technology that let loose a destructive power, it compensates with one that has regenerative power. If technology has conquered mankind, there will be soon technologies and concepts that can liberate man from the pernicious effect of such technologies. That is a natural law and that I believe is the basis of the existence of the universe.

Check Point and Microsoft collaborate to prevent data leaks and losses

Check Point Software Technologies has integrated Check Point security appliances and the Check Point R80 SmartConsole security management console with Microsoft Azure Information Protection (AIP), to prevent damaging losses and leaks of sensitive business data. The integration of Check Point’s advanced policy enforcement capabilities with Microsoft AIP’s file classification and protection features enables enterprises to keep their business data and IP secure, irrespective of how it is shared. This prevents organizations’ employees from accidently sending sensitive business data outside of the corporate network by Microsoft Outlook and Exchange, and extends complete data leak protection capabilities to popular web services such as Gmail, Dropbox, FTP and Box. When users create or handle files with sensitive data, Microsoft AIP recognizes the sensitive nature of the file and prompts the user to label the document as “Confidential Financial Data”. With this label, no user in the organization can accidentally send this file to an external recipient or location outside of the corporate network, as the integration with Check Point will block any improper distribution and notify the user.

2019. The round was led by Coatue and joined by Dragoneer, Sands Capital, T. Rowe Price Associates, and Wellington. Previous investors Accel, CapitalG, IVP and Sequoia, among others, also participated in the round. Organizations realize the need for a strategic framework when they cross a threshold of bot deployment. While automation starts with the focus in automating business processes

for productivity gains and cost savings, scaling up automation requires it to be viewed as a method of augmenting workforce with digital capabilities. Automation must become a strategic driver if it must scale up enterprise-wide. It needs to be viewed as a measure for better customer satisfaction resulting from more customer facetime and better customer experience.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH

Western Digital Black SN750 Western Digital Black SN750 is an NVMe SSD available in capacities up to 2T, which delivers peak speeds of up to 3,470/3,000MB/s read/write that offers better thermal and power efficiency. The new WD Black SN750 is an incremental update over last year's model, keeping the same basic controller and 64L 3D NAND combination but refining the firmware further. Western Digital’s Black SN750 uses the same 64L 3D NAND and custom NVMe controller as the previous-gen model. Western Digital designed the new drive to appeal to the booming gaming market and terms the new WD Black as “Loot Box Strong.” The new SSD features military-like styling for the device, WD's new SSD dashboard, and a new model that comes with an EKBW heatsink. The WD BLACK SSD’s sleek and modern heatsink model goes well with desktop PC builds that support the M.2 form factor and is the perfect component to complement systems with RGB lighting and other cooling technologies, such as water cooling. The product packaging and labelling has been restyled. All but the smallest model will soon be available in versions with a custom aluminum heatsink from EKWB. Additionally, there's a new version of Western Digital's new SSD Dashboard software for Windows that adds a "Gaming Mode" which re-configures the NVMe driver to not enable Autonomous Power State Transitions. When this gaming mode is enabled, the drive won't make use of its low-power idle states, which avoids the extra latency of waking the drive up after it has been idle for a few seconds. However, a few gaming desktops are configured to use the deepest idle states, and the WD Black wakes up very quickly from its intermediate idle; so this feature will be inconsequential for most users. The WD Black SN750 comes in four capacities (250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB all single-sided) and with a 5-year warranty.

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND DISRUPTIVE TRENDS TO DRIVE THE FUTURE: 17TH VARINDIA INFOTECH FORUM Digital is changing the world. Both digitization and digitalization is impacting organizations in a way that today no discussion is complete in the technology world without these two buzzwords. Digital technology is emerging as a great enabler to pave the way for efficient service delivery, governance and improved access to financial inclusion, education, justice and healthcare. On this backdrop, the 17th VARINDIA INFOTECH FORUM 2019 took place that set a new benchmark for an insightful discussion on digital transformation and disruptive trendsthat would drive the future. Having entered its 17th year, the Infotech Forum assembledtogether the who’s who of the ICT industry, IT consultants and senior government officials and PSUs and setting up a platform for a day-long event consisting of power-packed sessions of technical presentations, panel discussions and discourses on issues impacting the technology landscape and, most importantly business networking. The theme of the 17th INFOTECH FORUM was –Collaboration to Drive Digital Transformation. The eminent dignitaries whose presence raised the bar of the event include Jayantha Prabhu, Group CIO – ESSAR; Kunwarsingh R Singhel, Dy. Director Maharashtra Judicial Academy;S Mohini Ratna, EditorVARINDIA; Bharat B Anand, CIO- NATGRID; Dr. Herald Dcosta, Director- Intelligent Quotient Security; S.N Tripathi, Secretary-Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs- Govt. Talking about the day’s theme “Collaboration to drive digital transformation”, S Mohini Ratna, Editor - VARINDIA said that digital transformation is about a change in thought and organization’s culture and that high-performing companies deliver better experiences with greater

security. “The role of Chief Information Officers (CIO) is getting wider and they are working as the Chief Involvement officer, working closely with the CEOs. With the fast changing technology, CIOs and CMOs work closely together, with other C-level executives who tend to outperform competitors. As businesses derive more and more revenue from digital capabilities and service offerings, it becomes crucial for them to start on the path to secure customer data - and achieve true digital transformation - without dampening innovation.” She further added that social media has matured as a channel for digital communication, and includes a multitude of platforms that cybercriminals find very useful. “By 2019, it is expected that their activities will spread to others mediums including Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp and Telegram – a messaging app with a bot feature that has proven especially appealing to cybercriminals,” she said. Speaking on the topic Digital transformation and innovation, Dr. Deepak Kumar Sahu, Publisher & Chief Editor, VARINDIA and Group of Publications said that both digital transformation & innovation has become imperative for all businesses whether small, medium or large. “However, change is the only thing that is constant. Enterprises should be able to deliver customised applications at the speed of ideas. Our survey from 300 CIO’s in India says, about 75% of organisations said, their organisation is already undergoing digital transformation. That’s the way to stay ahead in competition in today's world. Secondly, lowering operational costs and enhancing customer experience is the core of digital transformation. The main issue is lack of security awareness among employees that proves to be a serious risk as businesses transform and embrace opportunities provided by the Internet of Things (IoT),” he said. The first speaker of the Forum, Chandra Mouli, Chief Information & Technology Officer – Sankara Nethralayaspoke on how the hospital industry has undergone a technological disruption in terms of what

SPEAKERS & DELEGATES “THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY DOES NOT USE TECHNOLOGY AS MUCH AS IT IS USED IN THE BANKING OR FINANCIAL INDUSTRY”

“We all know that today in a hospital, taking care of a patient becomes the No. 1 KRA. There is a lot of collaboration and communication happening between a doctor and a patienttoday and technology can drive a big innovation in it. As a matter of reality, the healthcare industry does not use technology as much as it is used in a banking or financial industry. And that is bound to change with time. In fact, we are trying to get into that mould already by leveraging cloud, social media and so on. Healthcare as an industry can be put under critical care. On the other extreme, we have a developed market like USA where there is a lot of focus on wellness and a country like India is trying to catch up with that trend.”

Chandra Mouli Chief Information & Technology Officer – Sankara Nethralaya

“WITH ITS CLOUD BASED INFRASTRUCTURE, TEAMVIEWER CONNECTS OVER 40 MILLION CUSTOMERS AT A TIME”

“Collaboration and digital transformation is rapidly moving ahead along with digitization and this is fast becoming a hot topic for CIOs/CTOs. TeamViewer as a company that started in 2005 can add value to our customers’ digital transformation and collaboration journey. We connect people, places and things around the world on the widest array of platforms and technologies. The company started as a remote support company but now we are a full-fledged remote connectivity platform. When it comes to remote support, there are two different tangents on two extreme levels in an IT landscape – remote support is inevitable as everyone needs it, but at the same time a CIO always has the concern of how to keep the public internet network safe.”

“PRODUCTIVITY OF HUMANS IS NOT INCREASING DESPITE THE COMING OF DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGIES”

“Cyber security that is discussed today requires a balance of both. If you develop a system or database and you have stopped looking at the security aspect the consequences could be disastrous. There are two puzzles that are visible today - in both the manufacturing and service sectors. Despite disruptive technologies, productivity of human being is not increasing the way it should have. So there is a big question mark on productivity despite technology. Another question that arises is why investment is not increasing despite reduction in interest rate. And these two create a job crisis. If productivity is not increasing no new manufacturing would come. Today the profitability is coming from how long you can make your people sit.”

S N Tripathi Secretary, Parliament Affairs Govt. of India

'THE POTENTIAL OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY WILL BE FULFILLED ONLY IF THERE IS SUFFICIENT AWARENESS AMONG US”

“Taking a cue from both experience of technical and judicial system, I will debate over if there is any content which is threatening or unlawful. If there is a threat, then the recipient can register an FIR. There are various provisions in the Indian Evidence Act. WhatsApp should have a procedure or a practise in place that if at all a mobile is routed the message should not be communicated in such kind of a device, otherwise it may be happen that a wrong person could be victimised because the evidence that came on the device is primary in nature. We require a cyber hygiene practise to find out if there are any apps which do this and at all are there any apps which can change the date, time as well as the content of the SMS. These things need to be taken care of very urgently.”

“CRAYON SOFTWARE'S MISSION IS TO HELP ITS CUSTOMERS OPTIMIZE THEIR ROI FROM COMPLEX TECHNOLOGIES”

“We are in a collaborative world and we are all seeing this emerging day after day. Today is the era of bio hacking. The digital universe is exploding; it is estimated that $1 Trillion of global IT spend is now outside IT procurement control. Cloud is now a consolidation play with hardware, software, resources and knowledge fusing together. By 2020, over 26 billion smart devices are predicted to have IP addresses and will be connected to ERP, while IoT will need licensing. So there is more of this collaborative world that we are going to see in times to come. This was quite a fiction a few years back but everything is real today. But security is going to be a big concern in this collaboration world. And that is where Crayon comes in and we have a very simple mission.”

EVENTS used to happen earlier and what it is now when it comes to patient care. S N Tripathi, Secretary, Parliament Affairs - Govt. of Indiabegan his speech with a simple statement – ‘To be bold and wise you must be young and stupid’ and explained how with the evolving technology it has become equally important to look at the security aspect. Krunal Patel, Sales Head India &South Asia – TeamViewergave his presentation on how digitization has emerged as an important topic and TeamViewer as a company is adding value to it. “As a CIO/CTO, it becomes a challenge to balance between these two groups. We are seeing more and more people adopting TeamViewer solutions in large enterprises; this is because it helps you give a very manageable application while also giving the power of internet to be used for doing remote support, both in good and bad bandwidth areas,” he said. Rajesh Thadani – Director, Sales & Service – Crayon Software Experts Indiaspoke in length about the collaborative world while also hinting at the fact that in coming times collaboration will be seen on a different tangent altogether.“Our mission is to support our customers, and optimize their RoIs from complex technologies. We work very closely with them for software economics, cloud, and volume

licensing,” he said. Jayantha Prabhu, Group CIO – ESSARin his presentation said that world today is in an interesting time as Technology is changing very fast.“We hear about a new technology every six months. The role of the CIO is to adopt to these new technology that they deem fit for their organization and convince business users to implement that,” he said. Dr Rajeev Papneja, Chief Growth Officer – ESDS Softwarethrough his presentation before the audience tried to give a better definition of what digital transformation is all about.“Digital transformation is challenging the status quo. We are stuck between Yes/ No/May be and we have to challenge it. Once we have challenged it, that will give us the answer and this is what digital transformation is all about,” he remarked. “WITH SURGING COMPETITION IT IS DIFFICULT TO SURVIVE WITHOUT DIGITALIZATION”

“While there are new keywords coming into the market – AI, ML, Blockchain, CIOs need to be on their toes to understand all these technologies. There is no doubt that digital is going to disrupt the industry. If you see the disruption journey – in 1995 people were talking about music, photography and video rental; in 2005 print media, TV, Travel, HR became the talking point; in 2015 we are talking about Retail, Banking/Insurance, Healthcare, Automotive, Logistics & Transportation, Education, Telco and Food & FMCG; and then in 2025 it is going to be a different world as all the safe havens will be subject to digital disruption. So when the world is changing fast, it is upon us how fast we change along with it.”

Jayantha Prabhu Group CIO ESSAR

“DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IS HOW YOU ENGAGE WITH CUSTOMERS AND MAKE THEM COME BACK TO YOU AGAIN”

“Digital transformation is not just technology or disruptions but it is way beyond all that. Technology existed for last 60 years, but why is there a new buzzword now around it. The digital generation that we see today are supposedly the customers for us tomorrow. They are not going to buy the way we sell. They are different and we so we have to become different. Digital Transformation is also not a single departmental idea; it is a combination of IT and business teams understanding the technology, making a difference in their lives and achieving a target. It is not either the implementation of any product or service. It is basically how you engage your customers and make them come back to you again and again. That is what digital transformation is all about.”

PANEL DISCUSSION: Enjoying The Digital Ride

MODERATED BY: VIJAY SETHI, CIO & CSO – HERO MOTORCORP (From L to R): Vijay Sethi, CIO & CSO – Hero MotorCorp; Chandra Mouli, Chief Information & Technology Officer – Sankara Nethralaya; Alok Mani, CEO & Founder – RPA Tech; Sanjeev Sinha, President – IT & Digital Transformation, India Power Corporation Limited; Upkar Singh, Director – IT, FIS Global; Bibek Maity, CIO - Lux Industries Limited; Subroto Panda, CIO – Anand and Anand; and Joyjit Roy Ghatak Choudhury, Director – IT & Knowledge Management, SRM University

The first panel spoke about how digital transformation as integration of digital technologies into all areas of business has transformed industries such as media, transportation, and retail and is now sweeping through financial institutions. The panelists also cited one of their successful digital projects that managed to transform their organization that also optimized cost, time and customer delivery. Vijay Sethi, CIO & CSO – Hero MotorCorp who moderated the discussion opened the stage by stating that there are a lot of diverse digital projects undertaken by CIOs today, irrespective of the industry that they are in. “The CIO or his IT team is not taking up this project for himself but it is being done for the business. So it has to be a joint ownership, whether it is 80%, or 40%; the numbers can be debated for the organization. It can be either way – IT can lead a project whereas business

can support it or vice versa. So there is nothing right or wrong about it. But the key thing is at the end of the day any digital transformation that we are putting up has to give business benefits. Because it is the business that pays for it and has to take advantage for it. Do not just adopt a technology just because everyone is doing it, but take it into consideration only after doing a cost analysis and after reviewing how it can benefit your business.” Joyjit Roy Ghatak Choudhury, Director – IT & Knowledge Management, SRM University said,“Coming from an educational background, the one digital project that we look forward to is the classroom technology through which we can give the teachers more edge for their lectures to be captured and transmitted to the students and keep it in a repository for future usage. These lectures can be reviewed later till the time exams happen. The teachers can find the lacunae on their delivery

EVENTS part while reviewing these lectures. It is beneficial for both students and teachers. For any digital project to be successful, it is important to identify the topmost issue and convert it into a reality.” Subroto Panda, CIO – Anand and Anand said,“I come from the legal industry and with the new government coming in the number of examiners in the patent & trademark industry increased to 800. So to clear the backlog of almost 9 years, we developed a simple solution for a complex problem which helped our organization save 1 million dollar. The database was based on SQL with a little bit of algorithm open source was embedded in the application. Earlier one patent application used to take six hours for a patent engineer to resubmit it but with this tool it could be done in 10 minutes. We had an IT team that handled the whole project effectively. It was time saving as well. It was a clear picture of digital transformation here, because if you see the adoptability of digitization in the legal industry, it is quite difficult. It happens only when there is an external thrust.” Bibek Maity, CIO - Lux Industries Limited said, “I have been working in the manufacturing industry for last 20 years. My first digital project here was a SAP HANA implementation. We have implemented in 54 locations in five legal entities within four months for four modules. Previously many systems were being used manually in different places but with SAP we shifted to a centralised common system for business improvement process, manpower handling, stockholder management and total financial control. We worked with E&Y for this project.” Upkar Singh, Director – IT, FIS Global said, “Being an IT/ITeS company, in our journey to an agile methodology recently we have fully automated our testing. The impact was that the error found later by the manual testers can now be caught by developers by doing a unique testing

of their coding. The delivery to the end customer is errorless, the time to market is faster and this has really given us an edge. Before taking up any project, I ensure to take one pain area of my business function, concentrate on it and deliver so that others can follow it.” Sanjeev Sinha, President – IT & Digital Transformation, India Power Corporation Limited said, “Being from the utility industry, we faced many problems. But one most critical thing that has made a significant difference is in the distribution area. We have power coming into the sub-stations, from where they go into transformers and thereafter they go to various users, both commercial and low-end users. This grid has a lot of load and the critical infrastructure is on the distribution transformer level. If there is an outrage here, the power to the users goes down. These have been manually maintained hitherto. So under digital transformation, we started with IoT and installed them in these transformers. So this data is getting transformed to the cloud every five minutes and we have a dashboard which we make it available to engineers where they can see the various KPIs of the distribution transformers. They need not be physically present there like they previously used to do.” Alok Mani, CEO & Founder – RPA Tech said, “I recall one implementation I had done in the healthcare field. When you go for care in hospital and if you have a cashless or any kind of insurance, then you get a sanction of certain amount for that care. That amount may not be accurate and is based on certain assumptions. Later when you are discharged, then the insurance company disburse that amount and this whole thing happens over email. This becomes difficult for the hospital and the patient to track. What we did with one of the hospital chain is we implemented robots that can read the emails, and figure out how much has been approved and paid. This is put into the financial system of the hospital and the booking of the cash becomes faster.”

PANEL DISCUSSION: Emerging Technologies Bringing Newer Opportunities

(From L to R): Dinesh Kumar, Group CIO – Wave Group; Syed Kadam Murshed, VP – IT, Future Oncology Hospital; S.P. Arya, Director - BizTek Advisors; Rajesh Narang, CTO – GeM; Avnesh Vats, IT Head – EESL; Sanjay Chowdhry, CIO – Hamdard Laboratories; Arijit Dasgupta, CIO – Rupa & Co; Dr. S K Meher, CIO – AIIMS; and Rahul Arora, Regional Business Manager – SonicWall

The second panel discussed on the topic of how emerging technologies today cover new and potentially powerful technologies that help organizations achieve business excellence through technology enablement, while also covering how these technologies help and build a business.

think blockchain as the panacea, then it is certainly not because we have come to know that even crypto currency uses that. As a CIO, I would just say one thing – evaluate technologies, learn about technologies even if you are not implementing it.”

Dinesh Kumar, Group CIO – Wave Group who moderated the second panel said that he feelsthat making the public aware of issues is very important. “Because you can put security for your on applications but what will happen if there is a fraud. The more we continue implementing technology, the more security we will have to strive for. Similarly if we

Avnesh Vats, IT Head – EESL said, “New emerging technologies definitely have an edge on today’s market. In most of the companies, there are two type of IT – one is the traditional IP and the other is the one you should look into that is new in the market. If you see two years back we had implemented IoT based street lighting with centralised control

& monitoring system in various states. We then felt what would be the outcome or challenge but we then realized that it has given a lot of benefit to the states where they have been implemented. In states like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana, there is a centralised IoT dashboard and my team monitors it and then give a report to the call centre to rectify any problem.” Rajesh Narang, CTO – GeM said, “GeM came into the picture only two and a half years ago, but it has transformed the way eCommerce is done. In my view there are a few things that we need to consider – we have to change the existing processes and make them lean & slim. But now new age technologies have come and above that state-of-the-art architectures have also come. Micro services architecture is one of them and we are using that at GeM. Because of this we have used DevOps as the engineering methodology and is different from monolithic architecture which we have been using. In this architecture, productivity can go up three times, as per my experience.” S.P. Arya, Director - BizTek Advisors said, “I have seen many transformations happening in the IT field. I feel that the new and emerging technologies that one is using should be reviewed of whether it has been used to its fullest capacity or not. Generally it happens that we deploy so many technologies and then we miss out on so many threats; we simply implement and keep them running. But we are not using its complete potential. Under such circumstances, newer technologies will always be a challenge.” Syed Kadam Murshed, VP – IT, Future Oncology Hospital said, “I have been in the healthcare industry for 7-8 years. Emerging technologies is an ongoing process and the list goes never ending. With time, new technologies are being added while some older names are wiped out from the list. My take is you should handle innovation very delicately mixed with business operations and best practices to actually gain success. There is no stop to innovation and we can take small steps to move forward. For instance, I worked in a hospital where I had implemented digital wrist band for the patients. We implemented it to reduce costs though barcodes. But it did not take off because there are dark areas in the hospital. We then used near field communication and the wrist bands were made NFC enabled.” Arijit Dasgupta, CIO – Rupa & Co said, “Business processes have always been there and owners are identifying the technologies that are helping them while we CIOs are integrating the processes with

If you happen to do it without analysing, you are only taking a specific problem into the future without it getting addressed. The actual advantage comes from improving the processes and any company irrespective of industry has a scope for improvement. As long as data is increasing, there is going to be the need for innovations and also security. Frequent assessment is the key piece.” Dr. S K Meher, CIO – AIIMS said,“We do business process reengineering every five years. When the technology changes, we automatically change. At the moment we are looking for the next three years to get the new HIS which is developed with open source. The technology what we will be using is MongoDB and Python with AI based. We have already started with it since we have to meet the current technology demand. Our first objective is to reduce the time and my observation is that when the paper system was there, 80% of the doctor’s time was wasted on searching for a paper or the information. Today that time has reduced down and in coming years that time will get reduced further.” Sanjay Chowdhry, CIO – Hamdard Laboratories said, “Whatever technology gets invested in or implemented a company should benefit and improve the business outcome. Business processes should be reduced rather than delaying it further. The turnaround time for single processes should be reduced. The manual intervention should also be reduced as it will also reduce the number of mistakes. I am foreseeing to implement RPA (Robotic process automation) next year in my organization. Take the example of finance, where it becomes a repetitive job for 2-3 people are tasked with the work of receiving money from different vendors, we as a CIO should look into improving the work efficiency and increasing productivity. Technology and the need, both are inter-related. The technology will come first and then the need will comes to raise the bar.” Rahul Arora, Regional Business Manager – SonicWall said, “There are two critical components while trying to adopt any emerging technologies - one is what you want to address and when that is clear only then you can derive a solution. The second is whatever we evaluate today, there should be a clear visibility of a measurable matrix in the environment that you are trying to transform. Technology and its need drive one another; we cannot comment on what will outface the other. When we are looking at the threat landscape and the technology advancements that is happening a lot of money will continue to go into R&D. Otherwise it is a chicken & egg story and it will continue like that.”

3rd Cyber Security Conclave

Cyber security is a growing concern of today. With the growing adoption of digitalization across the country and the latest technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT) etc. the concern of cyber-attacks are also increasing. The CIOs and CISOs are concerned because of the growing threats, compliance pressures and complexity. Keeping these concerns in mind, the third edition of the Cyber Security Conclave 2019 was held at Shangri-La, New Delhi to dive deep into the topic of Growing concern on Cyber-enabled Espionage and electronic evidence

The event witnessed the presence of stalwarts of the industry and government bodies. CSR can help create awareness on Cyber Crimes: Cyber Security Conclave 2019 Kamal Dhamija, Cyber Security Officer- Apollo Tyres; Dr. Rajeev Papneja, Chief Growth Officer - ESDS Software; Subroto Panda, CIOAnand and Anand and S Mohini Ratna, EditorVARINDIA. The morning started with the welcome speech of Dr. Deepak Kumar Sahu, Publisher & Chief Editor, Kalinga Digital Media & VARINDIA on the topic of “Growing concern on Cyber-Enabled Espionage”. “With the growing Cyber-attacks, virtually every sizable enterprise and government entity knows the critical importance of taking pains to protect their data. There is a widespread circulation of cyber security myths and partly because of the enormous volume and ever-changing nature of cyber-attacks, it is making it impossible to win all the battles all the time. Most businesses are aware of the importance of cyber security and taking preventive measures to mitigate cyber security risks.” Presenting the inaugural speech, Dr. Pawan Duggal, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Chairman, International Commission on Cyber Security Law said, “Baltimore has been hit by cyber-attack. $18 million is what the current cost that Baltimore is experiencing just to get back on wheels. The fact remains that when we talk

about cyber security, it’s a different ballgame altogether.” While delivering a speech on how to protect and safeguard from cyber-crime and cyberattack, Parikshit Gangaher, SE Manager – Major Accounts, Fortinet explains, “There was a leak which happened from NSA, a security agency in USA, and this leak was called Internal Blue. NSA was already using this and they were spying against neighbouring countries and even the allies. Last year it got leaked by a group called Shadow Brokers, which basically sold this exploit and was used by cyber criminals.” The fourth speaker of the day, S.K Tripathi, Regional Head – ALIMCO upheld how they are working dedicatedly in CSR. “For Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) we have a major sector – disability, which is very challenging. In India there are 2.68 core people with disability and the major problem with this sector is that most of them are from the deprived sector.” The first panel discussion was on the theme - Cyber Security – a growing CSR issue, which was moderated by Dr. Pavan Duggal, Advocate - Supreme Court of India. The panelists who joined the discussion were Rohit Srivastava, Cyber Security Expert; Bharat B Anand, Chief

of Technology – NATGRID; Vineet Goenka, Member Governing Council – CRIS, Ministry of Railway, Government of India; Krunal Patel, Head of Business India and South Asia, TeamViewer; andAnuj Agarwal, Trainer & Consultant on Cyber Investigation & Cyber Forensic. The second panel discussion was on the theme - Appreciation and Admissibility of Electronic Evidence, which was moderated by Dr. Herald D’costa, Director, Intelligent Communications. The panelists who joined the discussion were Sudhakar V Yarigadda, Joint Director, Maharashtra Judicial Academy; Kunwarsingh R Singhel, Deputy Director, Maharashtra Judicial Academy; Aslesha Barke, Consultant, Cyber Security Corporation; Dr. Nishesh Sharma, Author of Cyber Security / Forensic In India; Vivek Narayan Sharma, Joint Secretary, Supreme Advocates-on-Record Association; Harish Jain, CISO, CNH Industrial; Kamal Dhamija, Cyber Security Officer, Apollo Tyres and Avneesh Vats, IT- Head, EESL. The morning session of the Cyber Security Conclave 2019 witnessed the recognition of the

digitally empowered PSUs and departments in India. The awardees are GEM (Government e Marketplace); STPI (Software Technology Parks of India); CERT-IN (INDIAN COMPUTER EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM); MyGov.in; TCIL (Telecommunications Consultants India Limited); ITI Limited; Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.; RailTel Corporation of India; ALIMCO (Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India); and C-Dot.

Key Takeaways

Considering the criticality of services being delivered and the sensitivity of the data being involved, the severity & scope of the impact in case of any breach or attack in cyberspace could be immense. Strengthening the cybersecurity posture of the nation as a whole is certainly the need of the hour. This includes building capabilities and capacities of individuals, industry and government. Considering the importance, there has to be serious steps taken to strengthen the cyber security posture of the nation and ensure protection of the sovereignty of the nation in the cyberspace and also protect the rights of the citizens. With the growing cyberattacks, virtually every sizable

enterprise and government entity knows the critical importance of taking pains to protect their data. There is widespread circulation of cybersecurity myths and partly because of the enormous volume and ever-changing nature of cyber-attacks, making it impossible to win all the battles all the time. There are various types of attacks including fraud, phishing, malware, adware, spam, blended threats and DDoS attacks. These are just some of the attacks individuals and organizations should guard watchfully. The growing sophistication and perseverance of cybercriminals, network firewalls are proving to be insufficient security measures. Organisations need to fortify their endpoints behind the firewall, network printers against the persistent threat of ransomware and more malicious forms of malware. While every industry, business, entity and organization is susceptible to cyber-attacks, 2018 has shown a radical shift in the industries experiencing the highest incident rates. The panelists and speakers have all agreed on the types and volume of attacks that are happeningand contended that almost every all industry are affected.

SPEAKERS DR. PAWAN DUGGAL Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Chairman International Commission on Cyber Security Law “I am more interested with this particular robot of the Chinese news agency which is been launched in November. It is the world’s first Artificial Intelligence robot which is reading, analyzing news and simultaneously giving you a perspective. If this kind of a robot while on live news, tend to get hacked and misused, there could be a potential ramification that could exist. This tells us that human intelligence will be crossed by artificial intelligence by 2062. I believe those figures to be wrong. The actual tipping point is going to come much earlier. No wonder Artificial Intelligence today, apart from being an opportunity is one of the biggest challenges for cyber security because on the dark net you have abilities to actually start using AI services for breaching cyber security.”

PARIKSHIT GANGAHER SE Manager – Major Accounts Fortinet “Last year in 2018, $1.6 trillion were incurred as losses against cyber criminals. In India, 76% of the businesses were hit by cyber-attacks last year. It is becoming a big issue for us. With the evolution of software-defined world, these attacks will grow. The first evolution was virtualization of servers. The second evolution was the software-defined networks. Once the servers got virtualized you have to virtualize networks because you have to roll out your services faster. These two things combined to form the cloud computing. As the things have moved towards cloud, we need better connectivity and that is how software-defined WAN came into the picture.”

S.K TRIPATHI Regional Head ALIMCO “It is our responsibility and duty to support the disabled people from the deprived sector under our CSR activity to provide them devices, rehabilitation so that they can be brought into the main stream, and can thus contribute to make their life easy. The states with highest disabilities are UP, Maharashtra, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and West Bengal. 70% are in rural areas and out of these 75% are unemployed. So the major problem with this sector is that they are not able to perform their daily routine and also they are from the deprived sector. Now, it is our role from corporate and government departments to contribute for their upliftment through our CSR activity.”

EVENTS DR. VIPIN TYAGI Executive Director C-DOT “One of the things that we have realised is that we should have transparency in technology; one way is to have the standards and it needs to be built on a global scale. The second thing which is very important is that if you have built it in India, and have a better security but then you get got something from outside. Anybody who is doing research, development and all the design activities is well aware of the local context and also the laws, whereas if you are importing something from outside, you do not know what you are getting.Consequently the indigenous development of telecommunications is very important because all the data flows on the networks. We have the telecommunication gears which are available in India and which you can trust. But then the issue is we are yet to recognize our own capabilities.”

RAHUL ARORA Regional Business Manager, India (North & East) & SAARC, SonicWall Technologies “Security is very important for today & tomorrow and we got to be prepared for the threats that are coming from various vectors. Hence, it is very important that we understand that security is not just an anti-virus or a firewall, but it is much beyond that. We all realise that people on the other side are much smarter than us. That is what we need to tackle with the various security solutions available.Of course everybody is contributing to that war space which is becoming more and more relevant as well as critical across the globe.”

PANEL DISCUSSION: Cyber Security – a growing CSR issue Session - I (From L to R): Anuj Agarwal, Trainer & Consultant on Cyber Investigation & Cyber Forensic; Rohit Srivastava, Cyber Security Expert; Dr. Vipin Tyagi, Executive Director, C-DOT; Dr. Pawan Duggal, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Chairman - International Commission on Cyber Security Law; Vineet Goenka, Member Governing Council – CRIS, Ministry of Railway, Government of India; Bharat B Anand, Chief of Technology - NATGRID and Krunal Patel, Head of Business India and South Asia - TeamViewer

The mandate of the first panel discussion was cyber security in the context of CSR. The panel deliberated on the fact that cyber security is still not a part of CSR;the need of the hour is to get this up and about because a lot of funds has already been wasted and it is high time India requires a strong cyber security regulation. Rohit Srivastava, Cyber Security Expert during the discussion said, “We have the 2% mandate as per the Companies Act 2013 to be used in CSR by every company. I am not saying that any of the domains which are being used currently under CSR is of low importance, but the need for cyber security awareness in the country is at very high demand. The large PSUs are spending money on cyber security space but they do not get quality output in this area.”

38

June 2019 www.varindia.com

Bharat B Anand, Chief of Technology - NATGRID said, “The Government has mandated 2% as the compliance for CSR. But we ought to look beyond it because this is going to phenomenally change the way we integrate, interact with ourselves as well as with our devices. We have to look from a perspective that probably we have to have that kind of workforce to do that kind of job and a skilled manpower. We require some kind of thought process, may be more discussions between government and the corporate together.” Vineet Goenka, Member Governing Council – CRIS, Ministry of Railway, Government of India said, “The corporate or PSUs which have got huge CSR funds can tie up with institutions which produce basic information and protect the country’s interest so there we can put in

money. A lot of our money goes in securing the data outside the premise of this country. So why not corporates like Wipro, TCS etc come together and use their CSR fund and put up a data firm somewhere in India. It will generate employment.” Krunal Patel, Head of Business India and South Asia TeamViewer said, “People need to be made aware that there are security threats attached in the digital world and this has to be addressed. Corporates are very much willing to do this but under the current provisions, it is an expense. I focus on my product development, and improving the security

of the product &infrastructure which I serve to my customers and users. There has to be certain provisions available where I can use CSR as a vehicle to create that awareness.” Anuj Agarwal, Trainer & Consultant on Cyber Investigation & Cyber Forensic said, “In India, a bank incurs a loss of Rs 90,000 every hour and Rs 700 crore in a year which is a social engineering crime. In a year almost 15 lakh people are incurring loss. There are many tools and possibilities availablefor the security of corporate. But what are the ways to save common man and it is awareness. The cyber-crimes that are happening with common people are more in terms of social engineering.”

Session - II Panel Discussion: Appreciation and Admissibility of Electronic Evidence (From L to R): Dr. Herald D’costa, Director, Intelligent Communications; Kunwarsingh R Singhel, Deputy Director - Maharashtra Judicial Academy; Kamal Dhamija, Cyber Security Officer - Apollo Tyres; Sudhakar V Yarigadda, Joint Director - Maharashtra Judicial Academy; Vivek Narayan Sharma, Joint Secretary - Supreme Advocates-on-Record Association; Dr. Nishesh Sharma, Author of Cyber Security/Forensic in India; Aslesha Barke, Consultant - Cyber Security Corporation; Avneesh Vats, IT- Head, EESL; and Harish Jain, CISO - CNH Industrial

In the second panel, the discussion centred around “Electronics Evidence”. With the change in law, Indian courts have developed laws regarding reliance on electronic evidence. Judges have also demonstrated perceptiveness towards the intrinsic ‘electronic’nature of evidence, which includes insight regarding the admissibility of such evidence. In line with this, Dr. Herald D’costa, Director, Intelligent Communications while opening the discussion highlighted that one of the most important segments that need to be addressed is the legal perspective of cyber security. “When a cyber-crime team processing the devices that are seized and are sent to the forensic lab, the reports come from the lab as an admissible document and when the matter comes into the court, how the court appreciates the evidence is one which is a very vital factor.” Sudhakar V Yarigadda, Joint Director - Maharashtra Judicial Academy said, “For appreciation of evidence, one needs not to be a cyber-law specialist. The Evidence Act simply defines that after examining the materials place before the judge, he as a man of ordinary prudence, if he believes in its existence, it is said to be proved. If he has any doubt and not satisfied then it is not proved.” Kunwarsingh R Singhel, Deputy Director - Maharashtra Judicial Academy said, “Evidence can be broadly divided into oral and documentary. Oral evidence is what the witnesses deposit before the court. Documentary evidence are the documents produced for inspection before the court. When the original instrument is produced before the court it becomes the primary evidence and the court can believe on its existence.” Aslesha Barke, Consultant - Cyber Security Corporation said, “In today’s scenario, the paradigm has started shifting from conventional crimes to more of cyber or digital crimes. But still the element of evidence remains critical. Also, the process of investigation and trials are purely dependent on evidence." Dr. Nishesh Sharma, Author of Cyber Security/Forensic in India said, “The problem that our courts are facing today all over the

world is the jurisdiction issue. The US courts are working on this and they are going with the sliding scale test, purposeful availment test i.e., who is purposefully availing the website, minimum contact test etc. So to solve this problem, as cyber-crime is international in nature we have to follow the international protocol and international treaties.” Vivek Narayan Sharma, Joint Secretary - Supreme Advocates-on-Record Association said, “When the evidence comes to councils, we need to verify through forensic. If the device has been routed then it will produce incorrect information. When you will send the device to forensic then the department will test it and say the device has not been touched but at the same time in case of routed device, the forensic report may escape it.” Harish Jain, CISO - CNH Industrial said, “From a corporate side, we implement a lot of technologies to safeguard our information, to understand what is most critical for us. We have specific procedures in place where we have knowledge of data firms, where the data is, how it is leaving the organization etc. Awareness is something which is very important for the people who are actually dealing with the evidences rather than who are actually creating admissibility in the court of law. It has to go hand in hand and awareness is the key.” Kamal Dhamija, Cyber Security Officer - Apollo Tyres said, “We do have to build up the process in an organization to understand who exactly needs the data to perform the daily roles and responsibilities. We need to define the process and technology in place to understand. We have some meaningful data over there and it is required by somebody to perform his daily roles and responsibilities but not by everybody." Avneesh Vats, IT- Head, EESL said,“A lot of new technologies like 5G, IoT, AI, ML etc are coming up and more data will flow. We do not have a stable framework as of now, so issues like cyber-crime will come up. So from both technology and law enforcement perspective, we need to strengthen our infrastructure.”

SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS UNFOLDING

NEW AVENUES FOR BUSINESSES Social and Digital media have become the easiest mode of communication for people. They tend to spend a lot of time in the social and digital media platform. To reach a larger audience these days enterprises are using social platform as a tool for various activities like promotion of products, improve brand equity, easy way to connect with customers etc. This medium has created a great impact and has opened up numerous prospects for businesses. The social platform has not only turned into an engagement medium with customers but it also disperses information. Moreover, due to easy accessibility, people like to get information from social platforms and it also creates deeper connect with customers. Apart from customer connect, the enterprises use it as a tool to acquire customers. It helps the companies to identify their target audience, both existing and new. Along with identifying the target audience, it further provides an assessment of the effectiveness of the steps taken through these platforms. To better understand how businesses are reaping benefits from the social media platform and their strategies around it, we have garnered the views of few CIOs/CTOs on it.

RP RATH

CIO QUATRRO GLOBAL SERVICES PVT. LTD.

Not only it is important but it is a must for the CIO’s to upgrade them as Digital CIO’s and become change agents for their organizations. Businesses need to change their traditional systems to newer technology driven platforms in order to maintain the competitive edge and be the preferred partner to their respective Customers and most importantly to sustain their businesses. To achieve this, the company board looks at the CIO’s. Technologies like Cloud adoption, Robotic Process Automation, IOT, Mobility, Block Chain, AI and BI etc. brings in huge values to many customers but usage is determined by nature of business, size, volume etc. The biggest challenge the CIO’s are set from time to time is to reduce cost and be the growth agent for the organization. In order to achieve this dual role, CIO’s today must look to Social media as an important layer to run their businesses. Quatrro has a taken a lead in adoption of social media platforms as a medium of connectivity and collaboration among its workforce and Client workforce. We use all prominent social platforms as an input medium to our service delivery processes. Starting with Candidate sourcing, training, evaluation, lead generation, conversion and treatment, Communication and collaboration, Input and output processing, issue logging to mitigation the entire service delivery process hugely use social medium platforms.

AMIT DHAWAN

CHIEF INFORMATION SECURITY OFFICER BIRLASOFT

The paradigm shift in the technology space is redefining the capabilities that are needed to run CIO or CISO offices. No longer is the CIO or CISO required to ensure availability of systems. With huge migrations to cloud and use of RPA and other such technologies, the role now demands a better understanding of the business and requires agility of a high order. Social media, and not just the Facebooks, but the collaboration tools are slowly becoming a part of the daily work not from a need perspective but from a requirement one. The small verticals of capability and their interconnectivity to produce results are driving this change. These tools are also helping keeping all stakeholders current, spread the knowledge and foster partnerships within (and outside) the organizations.

SANJEEV SINHA

PRESIDENT – IT & DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION INDIA POWER CORPORATION LTD.

Skill sets of CIO/CTO keep shifting with the role of technology in business. Not only newer technology becomes available, their need too changes with the new business requirements. Social media has become a high impact medium and has opened up innumerable opportunities for businesses. It also manages a communication medium as well as information gathering medium. Hence, social and digital strategy for 2019 aims to fulfill these need. It aims to increase social media presence, communicate more, identify target audiences (existing or new customers) and even measure the effectiveness of the steps taken through any social media monitoring tool. The overall aim of the strategy would be to serve the customer better and more effectively by understanding them better and providing all necessary information to the finger tips of the customer.

This has helped us immensely in fraud detection and rumour verification which was earlier very limited to manual processes. Now the coverage and depth are extensive and we continue to add new dimensions into this function. This year we plan to integrate digitalization into our web-based trading platform, such as Mutual Funds, where we have been able to gain major market share. BSE’s MF platform offers all services under one roof by integrating with respective service providers of MF industry. The stage is set for rejuvenated launch of BSE MF mobile application during this month.

We also regularly publish information through social and digital media for Eye donation and conduct workshops and awareness programs on the importance of eye donation and educate the public on the importance of the Eye donations and how it can help restore sight to a needy.

SAYED PEERZADE

GROUP CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER RELIANCE BIG ENTERTAINMENT

I think it is essential for anyone aiming for a c-level position to have a core competency. General management skills must be built around a core competency be it finance, sales, marketing, IT, HR or operations. Social media or digital strategy played major role in bringing your products near to user. We realised it long back, that’s why when we started thinking of digital strategy, its complete SMAC stack we thought of not part of it. We integrated all of our products to social media, most of them online products. We created a separate business arm for digital strategy and marketing to make all of our products, be it Films, TV, Web streaming content, Games, OTT. We are very aggressive on this.

Social and Digital strategy aims for integrated lifecycle of marketing. Using social media and digital marketing without a strategy is quite common; such initiatives might be getting responses but more than that they must be missing opportunities. A lot of research should be done before planning a Social/Digital strategy as digital has become the core activity of marketing for rapport building of an organisation. All social platforms are giving prospects to businesses to connect customers directly, improve brand equity, complaint Redressal etc at ease.

As per AEML’s strategy few more social and digital channels will be integrated with its customer service framework with the help of new /modified processes, platforms, tools. This will enable AEML to establish deeper connection with customers & achieve customer empowerment.” For the coming year, we would like to improve our acquisition via digital channel by targeting customers with hyperlocal social channels which will allow us to get qualified leads and improve our conversion. This is a continuous evolution – we do have IT Talent Council at a Business and Group Level, and along with our Learning & Development teams, define the IT Skill Matrix along with possible Roles & Responsibilities. Most common are the following 3 strategies – for certain skill gaps, they are bridged through Training, while for certain skill gaps, we decide to outsource, and finally for certain, we insource through fresh talent, or borrow know-how from someone at a Group level. We also build champions for specific technologies – for example with lot of Cloud migration happening, we identified, trained and are building Cloud Champions in each of our businesses.

Understanding customer is core to a strategy. Today’s customer expects a personalise treatment and also expects that organisation customises products to meet its specific needs. Considering this we are working to use the social media and other public spaces not only to offer our campaigns or promotions but to do analysis of the unstructured data at all these places and devise our strategies with specific customer in mind. Extensive use of analytics is immediate focus.

VIJAY SETHI

CIO, CHRO & HEAD CSR HERO MOTOCORP LTD.

I do not see any major change in the strategy – the fundamentals remain same – how social and digital medium can be used not just to enhance customer experience but also a source for the feedback to the organization to enhance its products and processes and become more agile and customer centric. As the new technologies evolve, the focus on analytics increases.

We are also present on LinkedIn to connect with the demographic present there.

COVER STORY

Emerging Technologies influencing the transformation of the CIO role The roles and responsibilities of the modern CIO have undergone a drastic change over the years. In a fast changing technological world today, the equation between the CIO and the other C-level executives in the corporate value chain is that of a dynamic one. No longer is he looked upon as someone driving merely the IT functions in an organization, but he is also beginning to get involved in many business decision making process. Today, digital has become the quintessential platform for any customer to interact with businesses, before taking any other point of engagement. With global digital commerce revenue over $1 trillion annually, organizations view digital business as their fuel for growth. In the years to come, this might change again. Riding with this wave of change, a CIO has to see how best he can fit himself/herself in these situations that require adapting to new technological developments, business models and rising customer demands. The shift in the nature of the CIO’s role is most influenced by the changing technologies of social, mobile, cloud computing and big data and analytics. With IT operations largely automated, CIOs today no longer need to monitor and manage campus infrastructure at a granular level, which also means that the technology leaders have now more time to focus on the concepts that really matter - agility, innovation and business value. CHANDRA MOULI Chief Information and Technology Officer - Sankara Nethralaya “We are clear about a defined roadmap in terms of making information actionable to drive a lot of digital transformation and adapting to the new technologies which includes Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. We have designed our roadmap that is line with major technology enhancements. One of the major initiatives that we have done is to look at the screening of patients, particularly for adaptive retinopathy and come up with an algorithm that could be completely transformative as far as patients are concerned. The major problem as far as some of these new technologies are concerned is skills obviously. The second thing is enabling users to make decisions in terms of these new technologies, which are completely disruptive in nature. I think these are probably on the extreme side of both adoption and development. There are quite many best practices that I can potentially list out. I think, largely one of our major successes has been the adoption of the new technologies in the first place and trying to evangelize them with our users. I think that itself speaks in terms of both adoption and the kind of response that we have been receiving from users. AVNEESH VATS Deputy GM - IT, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd “As far as key priorities are concerned, our company is growing exponentially since last couple of years. Verticals like smart meter, e-mobility and the street lighting business have a lot of scope for improvement; we have an installed base of streetlights of more than 80 lakhs in India, which is totally governed by centralized control & monitoring system and is an IoT based solution. So, while initially we were monitoring it on a local level, we now want to collate at a national level and then have a dashboard and centrally monitor it from a single control centre. We are also coming up with a smart meter which can be used for billing only, but later the data that gets fed into the system can also be used for value added services. If we talk about new technologies like AI, ML, cognitive science and deep learning, there are a lot of potential out there. We are working on most of the projects which are new to India and talk about technologies like mobility telematics, an IoT based solution and we are not talking about the Trigeneration, which gives heat, cooling and power all with the same engine. So, I think there will be a lot of opportunity with new technologies.” DR. RAJEEV PAPNEJA Chief Growth Officer, ESDS Software “This year, our company is basically expanding in 16 countries and one of the priorities that is identified amongst others is definitely how do we make use of all the emerging technologies like Big Data, IoT and Machine Learning to optimize our processes, which will help us in increasing our efficiency and bottom line. We are into Cloud and Datacenter industry so with the new set of emerging technologies, the real challenge that we face is how we get the skill set for the new technologies. It takes time to build up those skill set. So definitely, because we have our team we have our organization which has been working we have international experience of serving more than 40,000 clients all that adds up in working with organizations who lacked the skill set today, which itself has opened up a huge opportunity for us. Since our organization itself is into innovations, we have our patented cloud technology. We have our own R&D team. So our team constantly keeps on working on newer technologies. We have tied up with many innovation labs, colleges. So we work with them very closely and we try to come up with innovations by challenging the status quo.”

MANISH THAKAR General Manager – IT Dept., Hitachi Hi-Rel Power Electronics Pvt Ltd. “We are in the phase of digital transformation and are identifying one by one the areas of the company where manual processes are going through, which we are then digitalizing it. Like for instance, the quality department still has a manual process of checking the materials that arrive at the gate; they need to quality check first and then they need to give a criteria. They need to fill in the parameter that we are going to digitalize, starting from quality and we are going to introduce an e-procurement system now. The purchase order processing is taking too much time since it is a manual process; we are going to digitalize that system and automatically the PO will be converted based on the quotation which has been submitted by the parties online. So, there is no vendor development required as they will come to the portal and this way we will cut the lead time as well as get rapid RoI. To compete in the market and to survive in the market I will rather say we have to add up new technologies. Information Technology is a growing field; so many technologies and solutions are available in the market today.” MANOJ KUMAR JHA Chief Manager – IT, Polyplastics Industries Pvt. Ltd. “We are into the manufacturing sector and we are supplying to all major companies. So, our priorities are mainly defined by the customer itself, because we are producing and supplying to them. This year we have defined the total centralization of our IT systems as our key priority. In our organization it's very hard to adopt new technologies because we are 52 years old company; it started in 1967. So the management is not familiar with the latest technologies, but with the coming of the new CIOs, the management has been convinced and they are now ready to adopt it. I have to personally go to the older people in the management and convince about the new technology and make them properly understand. We have a free hand to see what latest technologies are available in the market. So, in spite of being a fifty year old company, we are the first in the auto sector to adopt the blockchain technology. The management is also very keen and interested and are really supporting us to adopt this technology.”

NADEEM PERWAIZ Senior Manager & Head – IT, CII “This year we in Confederation of Indian Industry have prioritized cyber security and digital transformation as our highest priority. We have done lots of work this year in cyber security, and user awareness training sessions. We are now empowering our workforce by training them properly in terms of cyber security and doing lots of work for digital transformation also. We are ready to explore new technologies in terms of anything related to digital transformation, and cyber security, cost saving mechanism etc. We are ready to explore these possibilities also. For us, the best practice we are exploring within the organization is digital transformation, because most of the things are organized and done manually still. Instead of doing manual activities, we are trying to teach within the organization and also the external members to digitally transform themselves.”

SANJEEV LAMBA Head - IT GRC & PMO - Group IT, Minda Industries Ltd. “As we have a decentralized environment having different locations across India, so from the first focuses is on centralization of the activities, locations, and manpower has to be centralized first. As far as organization is concerned, it is very positive in that direction. Management is also focusing on the adoption of new technologies for productivity, information security etc. The organization is very much focused on it and they are helping us with the budgets also. The environment is a major factor which is contributing a lot, so before adapting any new technology we have to have the monitoring system, how we are going to implement and enforce it. So, the things which we need to have as a baseline are the only challenges that we are facing now. The best practice that we do is the awareness. The awareness offering to our staffs by putting a lot of posters, screen savers, wallpapers, doing a lot of awareness sessions with the security expert and other technology partners.”

SOMNATH MUKHERJEE VP – IT, Teleperformance D.I.B.S. “The biggest priority at this point for us is to actually integrate all of the applications which are running within the environment. These are essentially in silos. As we are in a customer satisfaction industry and customer service industry, the challenge, which we face today is in providing customer services, the information available for the end users is in a discrete platform. So, unless those are in a cohesive manner available for them, the customer satisfaction is not going up to that level. So the biggest challenge for us is to integrate all of those platforms into one. What we are primarily trying to do is, we are building certain middleware application to actually integrate all of those different applications. Another thing which we are planning to do is that most of our platforms are still on premise. So, we are trying to adopt cloud because that is one of the big things in today's industry for scalability. That is the second priority. The third priority is to automate processes which are more mundane and repetitive jobs through RPA.”

COVER STORY VINAY KUMAR CHOWDHARY Dy. General Manager (ERP), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. “Basically we have gone through implementing of SAP in our organization. So currently our key challenge is to make it mobile friendly. Cyber Security is another of them. Once you are going to sync with mobile, then we have to think about how we can make it safer. We are a transmission company and have already 350 sub-stations. We're trying to adopt remote monitoring because we are trying to make them an unmanned sub-station. We have a national center in Manesar from where we can monitor all stations without any human intervention.”

BIBEK MAITY CIO, Lux Industries Ltd. “Our key priority from an IT point of view is to strengthen our secondary sales tracking system. Our objective is to connect all; we have already connected around 1500 distributors all over India and are trying to connect around three lakhs retailers in the digitalized single system to ensure that the information flows and becomes transparent at all levels. It is a robust foundation of the organization because our sales depend on the retailers. So, if you have a strong distributor level all over India, we can know about the inventories and the kind of schemes they are getting from the retailer. This year we are looking at investing a lot of money. Also it requires a strong team. It becomes equally important to encourage the in-house team, also our customers specifically and so do our management. And this benefits the company and the customers equally. Definitely we need some investment now that we are in the digital age. The best technologies are those that encourage the customer and both the internal & the external team. Before focusing on the right technology, testing is very much important and this is what we are following.”

DR. SUSHIL KUMAR MEHER CIO, Department of Computer Facility, All India Institute of Medical Sciences “We want to do the process engineering for our new product which will be developed in house. After adoption of new technology we want to reduce the process, make the doctors more efficient, provide quality service and the outcome of research results will be more accurate. When we adopt a new technology, particularly in the healthcare domain it is very difficult to convince the health worker to adopt the technology and for this you have to make an interface with the doctors and Nursing Informatics Specialist so, that they will continuously work with them to elevate the technology. For best practices, always we go on two methods, one is the agile method and other is the scrum method. So, initially we do some small problems to resolve in the new technology, to add up new technology and we implement it properly so that we can adopt other options as agile methods to implement it. So project will be most successful and it will continue for a long time.”

RAVINDRA ARORA CISO, IRIS Software “We have identified two key priorities, one is no security incident. It means that we will ensure no data leakage, nothing in terms of any client data and the IRIS IPR that should be leaked out. We are already taking steps for that and are in implementation of many awareness programs, data protection framework etc. Another will be definitely taking new technologies like adoption of AI and Big Data. We are a software company, so we already identified areas where we can take up AI as key pointers for our clients. As mentioned earlier, we are a software company, if we do not adopt the innovation we will definitely be out of the market. We are working on some projects that are integrated with AI or RPA. There are challenges like, we should move to cloud but it has so many security risks that we need to consider. There are some opportunities also like we get a centralized management, cost effective solution as a cloud. But with the cloud, there are so many challenges like to maintain the security, providing the framework to another vendor to maintain. So I think we are actually tackling with this and we are working on that.”

VISHAL MADAN Sr. Vice President & IT Head, Capital Small Finance Bank Ltd. “The key priority for the bank today is at first to redesign and rethink the digital experience for the customers. Second, use Big Data Analytics in a way so that we can understand our customers and last, the security. The data, information and the financial records we have for the customers should be protected and the customers should feel safe when they do banking through multiple delivery channel. The way the digital landscape is changing today and the way people are banking for the last decade, it is improving. The newer technology is coming in like Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence. Every organization today have to gear up with all the new technologies which is available, make the right choice of technology not just to use technology for the sake of it. We need to make sure whatever technology we use should bring down the cost and better experience for the customers.”

HARISH JAIN CISO - CNH Industrial “Though there are several priorities for our organization, some of which are very critical from a business point of view, we have identified the adoption of cloud strategy as a key one. So a lot of our critical adoption applications we are adopting are towards the cloud. “We have a strategic tie up with Microsoft Azure and Express Route to connect to the cloud so that we can move our technologies there. Cyber Security is highly critical for our organization. So, we are bringing in new technologies to improve our landscape to fight against new threats in the cyber security space. In the IoT space too, we are doing a lot of work. We are doing a lot of work towards Telematics because that's the key for customer experience. The Board has today come of age and is talking about latest technologies. The business is quite dependent on new technologies. Digitization is our key priority and we have a separate digital vertical within our organization. We are prioritizing our digital related experiences. When new technologies are implemented, they bring a lot of opportunity. But there are some challenges too, because it's a change of culture and it will bring a change in the way the organization has been doing business for long.” JOYJIT ROY GHATAK CHOUDHURY Director – IT & Knowledge Management, SRM University. “The key priorities for us are datacenter modernization, creating a mobile app, digitalization for our students and the communities and revamping the existing ERP solution to a new ERP solution. So, there has been a complete revamp our internal website. The organization has geared up for adoption of new technologies, because now we have a full-fledged support from our senior management and our internal senior leadership team. We also have support from the finance department for our budgeting purpose. My work is predominantly in the education domain and there are a lot of internal challenges. Like for instance, the students come with their own devices to our internal network. So we do not have any control on their devices, but still have to give them a filtered internet and connectivity there. So we have to safeguard our internal network through firewalls and make effective rules and policies. The best practices are adopted based on what the other universities are doing presently. If you think about an Indian scenario, we continuously try to identify what the universities in other countries in US, UK and other Southeast Asia are doing it precisely. So we are trying to create a roadmap of how we are going to meet the global standard.”

LAKSHMANA VADAGA GM & Head – IT, Adlabs Entertainment Ltd. “Being a global KPO company, there are several initiatives we have identified this year. One of them is datacenter consolidation across the globe. Second is standardizing our connectivity, like MPLs and making it streamlined. And the third is cyber security priorities and the security best practices that we are supposed to implement. The fourth one is implementing a hyper-converged technology across the globe. We are quite well advanced when it comes to technology; we work with large MNCs, and international banks. And we have already started adopting technologies like RPA, artificial intelligence and have already deployed for certain clients. We have also implemented some new cyber security tools across the nation. So we are very much updated and we continue to evolve and implement these technologies across the globe. One of the biggest challenges obviously today every organization is facing is in terms of the security - how do we improve our security posture within the organization? How do we safeguard client information? so on and so forth. What we as a company is doing is to get all the best practices in place; we have recently started a cyber training program for all the employees and started it with IT as a team first.”

ROHIT KACHROO CISO, Indiabulls Group “2019 will be a very important year for us because we have recently got the license for insurance. We are also into the NV FCI and are merging with one of the banks very soon this year. So, this year will be a very challenging for us, because there will be a lot of things which will be happening from the bank perspective or from the insurance perspective as well. There are a lot of challenges these days because the cyber risk is increasing and every organization is facing a lot of problems these days. We are actually focusing on the awareness for the organization and also increasing resilience in our organization. Every new technology has pros and cons, at the same time we need to basically take care of other things. With technology, awareness is one of the very important things, which is becoming a challenge because there are many legal liabilities. Also, there are new threats which are actually emerging on daily basis. The best practices are we are largely focusing on the awareness this year. We have a lot of technologies, a lot of things we have already implemented but now we are emphasizing on the awareness part this year.” SANJEEV JAIN CIO, Integreon “We want to implement a Chatbot and also Artificial Intelligence (AI). So, these are the latest technologies which we want to implement this year. Our management is very supportive for taking off any new initiatives and they are providing us freedom to implement new technologies. So, the management is very supportive and they want to bring the entire thing to digitalization. Previously we used to have some issues, when people were in the water park they were not able to scan the barcode which is actually fading due to the chemical water and there we implemented the RFID technology and now it becomes very easy for the customers to do the transactions. We are also doing a lot of market campaign to get the customers experience. We are also adapting some of the applications where we can implement our in house applications to get the RoI for company.”

ATP threats and Targeted Attacks are on a rise Known for endpoint security solution, Kaspersky has observed that with the increasing number of technology platforms, different threats like malware, Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) are also getting detected and targeted attacks are on the rise. “If we consider the threat landscape in India or across the world, we have seen from the number of samples that different kinds of platforms are coming in. First is IoT, different OS platforms like Mac etc. and mobile which is catching up. Now, what we have seen from the samples that different kinds of malwares are coming in and a lot of APT threats (Advanced Persistent Threats) which are coming out are targeted to a particular organization or a government organization etc. Now, we need to analyze them very minutely and it takes a lot of time to do that. So what we are seeing is one – the threats happening on multiple platforms going up. Second, APT threats accounts companies and targeted attacks that are happening are also on the rise. We also see new kind of attacks like malware, these attacks which are coming in can impact without getting installed on the device itself,” feels Sidharth Mutreja.

CONNECTED DEVICES & PROTECTION Talking about the risks associated with the connected devices and measures to be taken to avoid such attacks, Sidharth explains, “First, it is an ecosystem, when you say connected devices, it could be an IoT device like consumer IoT, industrial IoT etc. When an IoT device connects, there are three stages to it - the sensor, the back end infrastructure that is the network which is used to connect and the cloud where the data goes to. So it's a complete ecosystem that you need to create. It is all about how the device collects the data, and how it sends the data. Even in consumer IoT, you can have multiple of sensors connecting inside the house, whether it's a refrigerator, smart TV etc. So it is not about the data that is getting collected, it needs to be secure by design. Second, you need to also ensure that the data when it goes to the backend, getting analyzed, it should be protected.” Further he adds, “From a device perspective, you need to look at first, do you have default configurations on the device, wherever the device comes or ships out it should not have default configuration. Second, you should patch an update to that device itself. Third is that the communications that you do, for example, most of the times people give their email ids and numbers to various devices, and if those devices are there and if you're not using them then just don't have it because it can be listening devices. So these are some suggestions, right from patching it up to ensuring the communications, default configurations, the protocols that are they following, and ensuring that atleast these things are also updated to the latest. Finally, you should check the Vendor and from where you are buying the device from.”

LATEST TECHNOLOGIES TO SERVE BETTER Kaspersky has evolved over the period of time and it offers solutions not only for IoT but also identifies APTs. It also has solutions which detects attacks happening within the network infrastructure. “We have been known for endpoint security for a large period of time. But we have evolved over time, for example, we have solutions where we look for not only IoT, but also detect APTs. We have an anti-targeted attack platform, which is able to detect attacks that are happening within the network infrastructure and then detecting those on basis of number of technologies, for example

In a chat with VARINDIA, Sidharth Mutreja, Enterprise Solution Architect – APAC, Kaspersky discusses the present threat landscape, risks involved with connected devices and measures to be taken and inclusion of latest technologies in solutions

machine learning models, behavioural analytics, anomalies detection, then alerting and responding, may be taking an action on endpoint. So we built multiple sets of these into not only the endpoint technology but for a datacenter or industrial IoT etc. So for specific verticals we have a lot of solutions,” says Sidharth. Further elaborating on the latest technologies incorporated in the solutions he says, “So the technologies that are coming up, we are adding the features into the products itself like in antitargeted attack platform or endpoint security, we built Advanced Exploit Prevention, machine learning models and we also have a bit of behaviour anomaly detection. So we've already taken these new features, new technologies and built it into existing as well as advancing the product lines. For example, we have come up with areas for IoT, how do we do assessment of IoT, we also looking at how do we protect industrial IoT or manufacturing sector, which has fixed processes, we are building solutions and technologies within that also.”
