theRestoring“Care” Healthcare

Dr. Eric Topol, Cardiologist, Director of Scripps Research Translational Institute, once said, “what I am most excited about artificial intelligence (AI) is using the future to bring back the past: to restore the care in healthcare. But it will require substantial activism of the medical community to stand up for patients and not allow further upending the erosion of the doctorpatientSuchrelationship.”observations eventually invite the judicious attention of the medical community to investigate and resolve the reeling issues in the sector. Whilst endorsing such important observations, The Integrator’s July issue explains several technological achievements in healthcare. As the intelligence of computer programs is used alongside the judgments of doctors and other medical professionals, more certain diagnoses and treatments can be offered to patients. Similarly, the prediction of diseases (heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, etc.) helps medical practitioners give effective advice to people. If AI alone manages to create such buzz in the healthcare sector, the combination of disruptive technologies, including extended reality (VR, AR), AI, robotics, digital health, and metaverse in the sector would change our perspective on patient care. With an estimated 11% of deaths in hospitals following a failure to identify and treat patients, the early prediction and treatment of these cases can have a huge impact to reduce life-long treatment and the cost of kidney dialysis.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare was not adequate and much less compared with commercial verticals especially in modern societies, such as the United States, China, and Europe. During a sudden heart attack, the time between the 911 or 999 call to the ambulance arrival is crucial for recovery. For an increased chance of survival, emergency dispatchers must be able to recognize the symptoms of a cardiac arrest to take appropriate measures. AI can analyze both verbal and nonverbal clues to establish a diagnosis from a distance.

The AI and ML industry has the responsibility to design healthcare systems and tools that ensure fairness and equality are met, both in data science and in clinical studies, to deliver the best possible health outcomes. With more use of ML algorithms in various areas of medicine, the risk of health inequities can occur.

NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING

The following article refers to the key areas of AI that were analyzed during the summit and they would ideally catalyze further discussions on the subject.

TECHNOLOGY

SUPPORTS HEALTH EQUITY

AI algorithms can identify new drug applications, tracing their toxic potential as well as their mechanisms of action. This technology led to the foundation of a drug discovery platform that enables the company to repurpose existing drugs and bioactive compounds.

Dr. Jassim Haji, chairman of the International Group of Artificial Intelligence (IGOAI) and a researcher in technology and AI, writes a cover feature on the transformational prospects of the healthcare sector besides the adoption of AI into patient care.

Expert systems based on collections of “if-then” rules were the dominant technology for AI in the 1980s and were widely used commercially in that and later periods. In healthcare, they were widely employed for “clinical decision support” purposes over the last couple of decades and are still in wide use today. Many electronic health records (EHR) providers furnish a set of rules with their systems today.

PHYSICAL ROBOTS

translation, and other goals related to language. There are two basic approaches to it: statistical and semantic NLP. Statistical NLP is based on machine learning and has contributed to a recent increase in the accuracy of recognition. It requires a large “corpus” or body of language from which to learn.

ROBOTIC AUTOMATIONPROCESS

This technology performs structured digital tasks for administrative purposes, i.e., those involving information systems, as if they were a human user following a script or rules. Compared to other forms of AI they are inexpensive, easy to program, and transparent in their actions. Robotic process automation (RPA) doesn't involve robots – only computer programs on servers. It relies on a combination of workflow, business rules, and “presentation layer” integration with information systems to act like a semi-intelligent user of the systems. In healthcare, they are used for repetitive tasks like prior authorization, updating patient records, or billing.

Patient engagement and adherence have long been seen as the ‘last mile”’ problem of healthcare – the final barrier between ineffective and good health outcomes. The more patients proactively participate in their well-being and care, the better the outcomes - utilization, financial outcomes, and member experience. These factors are increasingly being addressed by big data and AI.

Physical robots are well known by this point, given that more than 200,000 industrial robots are installed each year around the world. They perform pre-defined tasks, such as lifting, repositioning, welding, or assembling objects in places like factories and warehouses and delivering supplies in hospitals. Recently, robots have become morearedesiredthemtrainedarewithcollaborativemorehumansandmoreeasilybymovingthroughthetask.Theyalsobecomingintelligent,as other AI capabilities are being embedded in their “brains.”

The VR AR Association is an international organization working incessantly to bring the global XR communities closer together enabling a robust and fruitful interaction between likeminded entrepreneurs and technology enthusiasts and a chance to learn and acquire knowledge from each other, and helps develop VR/AR industry best practices. These global initiatives taken in the field of technology are paving the way for predictive and preventive healthcare solutions.

The use of XR in healthcare is proving to be a gamechanger in clinical practice. The fact that no physical or geographical boundaries stand in the way of this technology, is the reason alone for its huge impact.

Add to that the element of safety and cost-effectiveness and you have a win-win combination, resulting in improved quality of care in effective time. How impactful are the latest technologies, i.e., AI, data analytics, remote patient monitoring, for improving patient care?

Can you give some insights into a recent healthcare strategy that, you devised or collaborated with, brought significant results in patient care?

The usage of an approved system that bears standardized hardware and software: A higher degree of match between the content, device, and human will result in favorable clinical outcomes and lower probabilities of any side effects. Furthermore, ease of usage and physical ergonomics like the wearable device size and weight are among other essential criteria for selecting a VR or AR system. Moreover, simplicity is predominantly essential.

More about Dr. Sana Farid:

Clinical implementation of XR is quite similar to that of other clinical equipment: Accompanied by thorough research and investigation. A clinical protocol needs to be designed which is a medical document that bears the design, objective, and methodology of particular equipment. The ultimate goal of any XR program is to enhance the patient’s experience. A thorough understanding of the patient’s history and current status and defining the goals of using new tools are vital

Tell us about Callsign’s Middle East presence, market share, focused industry verticals, and prospective association with enterprises?

Callsign is an artificial intelligence-based authentication platform for enterprises, financial institutions, and consumer-facing digital services. Saeed Ahmad, Managing Director, Middle East and North Africa at Callsign shares their regional strategies with The Integrator.

Organizations want consumers to interact and transact with their online services, but it is hard to know who to trust online. Simple pins and passwords do not prove the person is who they say they are. A bad actor using a legitimate username and password looks like a genuine consumer accessing services. So how do we build trust online again? We need to be able to prove beyond doubt who someone is online. To do this, organizations need to challenge the ubiquity of traditional log-in methods, such as usernames and passwords, and instead introduce different ways of validating digital identity to provide the public with confidence in using their services.Oneway to do this is to use biometrics, behavioural biometrics add no friction to the user journey and are unique to the user. With a simple swipe of the phone or typing on a keyboard, a user’s identity can be confirmed. It’s extremely hard for a fraudster to mimic the muscle memory of a user, so even if they have genuine credentials, technology will prevent them from gaining access to the services they are trying to game. Once consumers and organizations have confidence in the technology to do this, we start to build trust. We can trust that the technology we are using online proves who we are beyond doubt, and the digital economy will grow. How to choose the best authentication method? There are two different types of authentication methods that organizations can put in place to overcome the shortcomings of relying on usernames and passwords: native biometrics and behavioral biometrics. However, native biometrics cannot be changed, so if compromised, problems arise. SMBS AS AN INDIRECT AVENUE OF CYBER ATTACKS

HOW CYBERSECURITY

Written by - Ram Narayanan, Country Manager at Check Point Software Technologies, ME. security. It is now more important than ever for SMBs to implement strict security hygiene and effective cybersecurity processes to ensure their business is prepared for the event of cyber attacks happening.

Ram NarayananCountry Country Manager, Check Point Software Technologies, ME

24 JULY 2022 www.VARonline.com FEATURE CHECK POINT

Supply chain attacks aren’t new. If the past couple of years have taught businesses anything, it’s that the impact of supply chain cyber attacks is now, universal, from the fallout of the SolarWinds software breach, to the exposed Apache Log4j vulnerability and Kaseya last year. Unfortunately when such supply chain attacks hit smaller businesses who are usually the suppliers to larger enterprises, their impact is especially prohibitive.

HOW SMBS CAN PREVENT SUPPLY CHAIN ATTACKS

FORREADINESSCYBERSECURITYISPARAMOUNTSMBS

The key factor to preventing cyberattacks is threat prevention. With minimal time and lack of cyber expertise or manpower, SMBs must adopt a prevention mindset to minimise potential cyber attacks and threats.

WHY

The reality is threat actors have taken advantage not only of the nowentrenched remote working model to target organisations, but also the usual limits preventing SMBs from bulking up on their cyber security defences, mainly lack of budget and expertise. SMBs often do not have a dedicated IT or security department, meaning with no in-house security expertise and reduced focus on security patching, these companies are easier to socially engineer and infiltrate. Adding to this, SMBs usually have employees doing multiple roles, and thus a wider access to valuable areas of the business and information is given to them, and so if breached, they pose a threat to multiple areas within the business.

Threat actors often target SMBs as low hanging fruit for their vital role in supply chains. This is especially so as such attacks wreak havoc on not only one organisation but entire businesses within the supply networks. By leveraging tactics such as phishing, cybercriminals gain access to an organisation to launch a malware attack, steal data and credentials or instigate a ransomware.

For SMBs already feeling the prolonged impact of the pandemic, the added pressure of dealing with sophisticated and frequent cyber attacks in real time, are a heavy burden, as they try to protect their business against financial, legal and reputational damage, as well as their own suppliers and larger clients’ READINESS PREVENTS SMBS FROM FUELLING SUPPLY CHAIN ATTACKS

By applying stronger cyber defences, SMBs are in a position to provide larger organisations with assurance that larger companies they supply to will not be compromised via the SMB partner or third-party vendor.

Beyond the immediate financial impact and reputational blow as a trustworthy, reliable partner, SMBs can also face legal or regulatory repercussions, operational disruption, flow-on costs for system remediation and cyberattack response, customer churn, and the loss of competitive advantage that can make or break a smaller business. In fact, a tarnished reputation as an avenue of attack can be even more detrimental to an SMB organisation, as the loss of trust with a larger organisation could mean a loss of potential business and revenue down the line with them or other new, potential customers.

HYGIENE

Another important point is not to install random stuff on your computer for which you don’t know the legitimacy. When traveling, sometimes you need different kinds of tracking software, especially if you are in different countries, and especially now with a lot of countries asking for certain kinds of trackers at airport immigration for example.

network. You don't know who is on this network or what they are doing, because you don't control the security. If the network has bad security, then you now enable your system to be scanned directly by other people on this network.

If threat actors can gain access to your specific device, then they can gain access to your corporate network. With this, threat actors have a foot inside the network, which allows them to move laterally through the networks and scan the network from inside. This often leads to ransomware down the line at the later stage of an attack. What can travelers do to protect themselves against cyber-attacks? I think the most important point is to patch your systems. This is something that should be something of high priority whether you are traveling or not. A good example

Social media becomes popular during travel. What should employees avoid when using social media to stay cyber safe?

One thing I try to avoid is using social media accounts to log in to certain kinds of platforms. My recommendation to avoid this is to create a throwaway account for traveling. This account can be used for the specific purpose of connecting to Wi-Fi without any sensitive information being involved.

By Jonas Walker, Security Strategist at FortiGuard Labs

25JULY 2022www.VARonline.com INTERVIEWFORTIGUARD LABS is when you open the App Store or Google Play Store and update the apps on your smartphone. Next time you do this, check out the release note and why the vendor is recommending you update their app. More often than not, it is not about a feature or a new UI. In most cases, it's about security features, it's about a bug that has been fixed. If you don't update these apps, threat actors who are aware of these issues as disclosed by the vendor can take advantage of these vulnerabilities.

Why is practicing cyber hygiene essential for travelers? Cyber hygiene is like personal hygiene, it is all about having a daily routine. That includes good practices to ensure that your environment stays clean, especially when traveling. When you travel, you typically carry a device, a computer or smartphone, with you. These devices are known as endpoints. The nature of endpoints is that they connect to different networks, whether that be a hotel, a corporate network, public Wi-Fi, or at a conference. Endpoints are thus the last stage of a network, making them the most at risk.

How can employees continue to work from anywhere while traveling and connecting to their essential networks? If possible, don't connect to public Wi-Fi, especially if a lot of people are around the network. If you can connect to a public Wi-Fi, pretty much anyone in that area can as well, and you are not in control of what is happening on this CYBER

As Covid-19 infection rates shift and countries re-open their borders for tourism, travel in some places has returned at an even higher rate than pre-pandemic. With expanding travel comes expanding cyber risks, it is as important as ever for those heading abroad this summer to practice cyber hygiene.

TOP CYBER THREAT CONCERNS FOR ENTERPRISE IT

Without a doubt, the escalating threat landscape is causing a broad array of concerns from respondents. Chief among them is the loss of sensitive assets and data followed by the disruptive impact of downtime or network lockdown. In response, there was an evident shift to a Zero Trust security approach. One-third (30%) of enterprise organizations said that they had already adopted a Zero Trust model. Today’s enterprises have faced many challenges with the pace of change over the last few years because of digital transformation, and the need for that transformation to be resilient and secure. These challenges have been amplified by the disruption of the global pandemic.Therehave been massive global macro-economic shifts that have fundamentally changed the way companies operate, from the rise of remotely working employees to the adjustments of customer engagement strategies. Remote work was in full swing before the pandemic and it already had an impact on IT strategy and the shift to cloud, including hybrid cloud. This trend has only accelerated due to the ease of remote deployment and accessibility of software, SaaS, and cloud options. With all these changes, the specter of security breaches is high. This explains the rise and popularity of Zero Trust as a framework for securing networks in these new realities and as an effective tool to drive cybersecurity initiatives within the entire enterprise.Allthismeans that in a postpandemic era, digital resilience is a top priority and cyber threats are only accelerating.
